Get ready for summer

Today being the 1 June, thoughts may be turning to summer, with the hope that soon we may get weather to match. As June arrives, the media likewise turns its attention to the sunshine and addresses the serious matter of what we should be wearing to cope with the climbing temperatures. We are helped in our choices by the example of the stars and their stylists - take Jake Gyllenhaal for instance...

The UK's Daily Express recently ran a feature on that all-round garment - shorts (these being the 'shorts' you wear in public) and that dilemma of what you should wear with them - and what you should not. While the feature demonstrates that shorts can be a very bad look - particularly when worn by London's new mayor - someone who wears them very well indeed is the 'dazzling star Jake Gyllenhaal'.

The LA Times today ran a feature on the 'man behind the look of Maroon 5', Aristotle Circa, who has also, the article states, been a stylist to Jake. Aristotle makes some suggestions here for how to wear that other, sometimes difficult piece of clothing, the short-sleeve shirt. In today's feature, for the first day of June, I thought I'd take a look at Jake in shorts, searching for any tips for how to look relaxed and ready in a number of summer situations.

When exercising one's animals

When you want to blend in

For staying cool

For school

When you can't make up your mind

When you're in a rush

When you're hot

Include pictures from IHJ and the Daily Express

wow... it's amazing how they managed to come up with a topic that allowed Boris Johnson graces the same page with Jake! :P

I am not a big shorts fan... I think it's best to avoid it unless you look like Kate Moss or Jake Gyllenhaal :P

I think Jake's secret with shorts is that... he know what socks to wear (or not to wear) :)

WDW, What are you trying to do to us? Just as it's cooling off you make me all hot and bothered again. "Too cool... for school" that's a classic.

What are the odds of Boris Johnson and Jake Gyllenhaal being linked in a news article? The fashion 'experts' obviously have good taste in recognising Jake's cool summerwear.

... but you know, sometimes.... I wanna pull his shorts up... just a little... cos ... I don't know?!

Visitors gone and my home is mine again - not Jake fans - ah well. Wait till PoP :DD

My high hopes for Nailed being finished in the next few weeks with a florish and Jake is working his socks off - work it baby, work it whatever you're doing. Those guys really need to keep a wry sense of humour about the whole process. They must be doing indoor shoots as no sightings reported.

Hey winterbird, same thoughts on the Johnson ;DD

I used to think Jake's legs were skinny but I must not have had my glasses on. They're mighty fine pins.

Hi there! Ooh, it's good to be home and no shackles on the Jaking - but all credit to my mum who saved the Express article for me :D

It is a miraculous bit of journalism to put Jake and Boris Bloody Hell Johnson in the same feature... But at least (and this is novel for the Express) it's not gushing over the Tory but over Mr G :)

Hi Winterbird - I prefer to leave shorts to gorgeous actors myself too. You're right about the socks. Although occasionally Jake has been seen in shorts AND kneelength socks. Rarely a good look.

Hey Sheba :D Glad you have your home back! The school pic really is a classic. I can't believe that pic is as recent as it is.

It is an excellent thought that Jake is hot at work - as you say, probably filming the interior (dareIsay bedroom) scenes :D

Time to open a bottle...

Hey Sheba - I think Jake's legs can be skinny but they're looking pretty good at the mo :)

Incidentally, can someone tell me what on earth that thing is sitting in Jake's lap in the first of pet section of pics? I know animals have a penchant for leaping into Jake's lap but honestly.... (not just animals, actually) :D

WDW..I think that is an Italian Greyhound in the picture with Jake. I believe it was probably someone else's dog. I don't recall Jake ever having one of them. Speaking of pictures of Jake and dogs, you recently had a picture of Jake and one of the Australian Cattle Dogs from Brokeback Mountain. I love that picture because I have an Australian Cattle Dog that looks very much like the one in the picture.

I thought that dog was Atticus (when he's running between his legs?)

How dear and sweet of your mom to do that for you (my mom probably would have done the same too).

Yes, the scholarly pics, the way he carries himself, part bookish, part cool. It's a very at home look for him - that's why he was so convincing (albeit too young) for Proof.

Oh, yes, the indoor scenes... well... pass the bottle will ya... need some glasses over there?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Elaine :D Thanks so much for commenting. Thanks for the info about that dog too. The other pictures in the set suggest that this was the dog of a passerby that leapt into Jake's lap! As you say, not Jake's dog. I was wondering what make it was, so thanks for that. That picture you mention, with the cattle dog, is one of my favourites, it's a wonderful scene. I'm very jealous of you having a dog like that :)

Thank you for sharing that article and those gorgeous pics of Jake. That boy was made to wear shorts...dayum! Buff and hot and those legs and arms. My temp rose 100 degrees when I saw that last pic with his undies peeking out the top..... holy sheeeeet!

And thanks for the one with the kitten. Never saw him holding a cat before. He's just sooooo gentle.... sigh...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sheba - posting at the same time! That wasn't Atti in that picture, although Atticus visited the set. This was one of the dogstars. I wish we had some deleted scenes from the mountain, I'd like to see more of Jake with the horses and dogs.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon! I could not resist posting that picture of Jake with the kitten. It might have been Kirsten's and not his own but the way Jake handles it - just so gentle. Like that :D And glad to hear Jake's given you a temperature! How could he do otherwise with those legs? And those shorts and, well, just all of him... Thanks for commenting :D

When he wears his hat in that lop-sided way he does sometimes, I just wanna grab his cheeks (the ones on the face) and squeeze them like a great aunt would-- talk about adorable. The crooked hat barely atop his head makes Jake even more sweet, vulnerable and (not so aunt-like) kinda amazingly funny and totally hot sex stud at the same time.

sheba said...

Of course, the dogstar during the film - I thought is was during the HBO special. About the deleted scenes, definitely. In fact I'm wondering how long it will be before they release this - its been too long already - hate that its in dribs and drabs to only a select few people >:o( BBM's what probably what turned him on to the idea of being a farmer - the way he connected with the animals he had to while filming.

How cold must it have been up in the mountains - I'm just remembering the scene where he was washing his clothes in the river and all he had on were his boots. I bet that shiver was real.

sheba said...

I do like how the article reiterates that summer shorts should look like they've seen a few summers and should not be pressed - that would account for the sexy rumpled look then Jake ;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Anon, I know just what you mean with those pictures of Jake - when he just puts a hat on his head at a cheeky angle and just lets it balance there :D It is funny and sexy at the same time.

hi Sheba - it must have been cold on those days up on the mountain. The contrast between the cold of the night and then the brief hours of warmth in the sun. Very chilly when washing the clothes! I hope we do see the scenes one of these days...

Poor dear Reese, how does she do it all!! There just isn't enough hours in a day for all the G

so much G, so little time...

The eyes, the hair, the body, it can't all be done and worshiped in one day, no?

Several important points:

--In my dream about Jake and his 6 siblings, I urged him to enlist the whole family in writing a global guidebook to great coffee shops and juice bars. In my next dream, I will offer my help in doing field work. I will want a generous expense account, as my budget is tight. :-(

--Shorts! I'm proud of my legs, so I will wear shorts, naturally. But I would have worn them anyway. Trouble is, my legs are too short for the longish shorts that evil
retailers insist on selling. :-(

--For me, the Mayor of London will always be that 8-foot-tall guy who hovered majestically over every-body else in the "Lord Mayor of London" skit on Monty Python. ;-)

-- I saw another Jake-linked movie yesterday: "The Fall," which was presented by David Fincher and another, non-Jake-related director. ;-) A little girl with a broken arm goes to a hospital in Los Angeles circa 1915, and befriends a film actor who has injured himself doing movie stunts.
She is from India, while he makes cowboy and Indian movies. So, as he tells her a made-up story, she imagines the "Indians" in India. :-)

Hi Anna - without doubt Jake is a remedy and cure-all for every situation :)

Hey Paul! I loved that dream of your's - and I can help out with the research as well if needs be. You'll have your hands full with all those siblings :D I wish the Monty Python guy was the Mayor of London, now London just has a joke.

I've heard about The Fall and it sounds wonderful - I would love to see it, and not just cos I'm a Fincher groupie. The idea behind it sounds captivating. I wish there were more venues to see films like that where I am. I loved Iron Man and Indy but they've taken over all of the cinema screens.

I love the "school" picture..its my favorite for some reason..makes me wish I would see Jake walking around my school! Once I get a small break from school hopefully in the next couple of weeks I plan on doing a little jake hunting..it seems like its just been soo long since I have seen him..

Hi Nicole :D I like that pic too. Good luck with the search :)

Brilliant post! Jake in the Express with Boris the Buffoon is totally surreal. Stroke of genius, WDW, making it into a post about Jake in shorts.I'd never really given the subject much thought(although I'm always happpy to see the Gyllenlegs) but I can see now that it's a very important aspect of Jake that needs to be studied in depth. I better go and look at all the pics again;) Btw, thanks for throwing in a chest hair pic too:D

Oh,and what is going on in the pic where Jake looks like he's trying to hide behind a rather confused looking bloke? I'm sure there's a simple explanation but I can't begin to imagine what it is.

Nothing better than summertime Jake! We need more of that asap!

Saw Sex and the City and really enjoyed it. Paul, I get how you feel the men got short shrift in the series, but it really was about the women and their friendships. While not giving anything away, the men do finally come out well in the movie.

Otherwise, I had a lovely brunch with Maggie, Peter and Ramona today!!! I was having brunch with some family and who do I see sitting next to me when I look to my right but none other than Peter and Ramona! OMG, could not have been better but then the waitress came by and said they had an outside table. So Peter and Ramona get up before I have a chance to blink and Maggie walks right behind them. All looking fantastic and Ramona is totally adorable. I did thankfully have a wonderful view of Peter and sometimes Ramona and Maggie from the glass doors. We did take a casual walk outside to the patio and got a very cute look at them. And Maggie and Ramona were just behind us leaving the restaurant. I was hoping there might be a moment to say something to them but being a New Yorker and not finding the moment I left them to enjoy their brunch as the rest of us were. Thankfully it was an out of the way place, although very popular, they were not bothered by the paps and could have their meal in peace. Needless to say it made my day. Only that would have topped that was if Jake was with them. :D

Hi TL :D I think you should give Jake's legs far more attention! That guy is extremely confused - maybe he knocked Jake's sandwich out of his hand and was the trying to look innocent...

OMG Get Real!! That is amazing and totally made my day and I wasn't even there! How great that you saw Peter, Maggie and Ramona and huge kudos to you :D You were so cool and you have a wonderful memory as a result :) I have a little/big crush on Peter and I'm so glad you got to see him. That's the great thing about cities such as NYC and London, you can see the stars but they get their peace. Fabulous encounter - thanks so much for telling us, Get Real :D I have a huge smile on my face!

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Wow Get Real, what a fab sighting of the Gyllengaards! And I congratulate you on your reticence - it must have been so tempting to say something, but you and everyone else left them in peace. Just shows, stars can avoid the Paps if they really want to be low key.

Luscious post,WDW!!! I must admit that, as a rule I'm an advocate of boys ceasing to wear short trousers at the age of 11,other than for playing sport, but I'll make an exception for Jake (magnanimous is my middle name), because he lives in a hot place and he's....well,hot!!! ;-)

I particularly love the cycling shot. Legs tanned, shaved and toned, all the better for biking with, and that fabulous chest! I think TL's just fainted ;-). I think I'm going to join her *THUD*

Anonymous said...

Thanks WDW and Nadine! It was a great experience seeing the Gyllengaards. I am still smiling from it. :D WDW, I totally have a crush on Peter too. I crush hard on all of them Jake, Peter and Maggie. Peter was looking really sexy in a casual green short sleeved shirt and Maggie looked radiant in a sun dress, as did Ramona in her sundress.

Yeah I just felt they were being left alone and just having lunch so as much as I would have loved to say something I didn't. If only they had stayed and eaten at the table next to ours! ;p Funny enough we were going to eat outside too but there were no tables at the time we arrived.

Dearest Kate,
I do hope you're OK and feeling well now. I've been so not well recently, and I am trying to keep up here by reading and returning here again and again to laugh and enjoy myself.
This article is the best and is wonderfully and beautifully fit for Jaking:)
...Jake in his shorts *sigh*...who wouldn't fall madly in love:)
TY TY TY 397509437597 times:)
I'll be back soon... I am so many days behind...

Hi everyone! Does anyone know what's going on with IHJ community site? I haven't been able to access it.

Great post, WDW. Yesterday I went out and saw the hugest Avon advertising in the market square in my city, covering several buildings, probably the size of a football field, with Reese Witherspoon all over it. She was smirking;)

Good morning everyone - shame it's Monday but still :D

Morning Nadine! As I've said before, when it comes to Jake and his clothes, less is more, so I'm happy to see him in shorts too. Love that bike pic with the open shirt.... And when you're hot you have to do what a hot person has to do.

Hi Get Real! I bet you're smiling, me too :D Thanks for describing them, I love the details. The picture of Peter and I is my work desktop and so I turned that on this morning and I thought of you! It's like 6 degrees of separation but far fewer :)

Hey there Sass - so sorry to hear you've been unwell. I hope that you enjoy catching up - Jaking is a good remedy. Take it easy :)

Morning Zodiac - I saw a massive massive billboard for your namesake, Zodiac, in LA last year - the size of a skyscraper looming out over the city amd it was incredible! I think the IHJ Community is still down this morning. Hopefully, it's a temporary glitch. I'll email and try and find out.

Have a great day everyone :D

OMG, Get Real, you saw the Gyllengaards! how cool is that?! You did really well to keep your composure. I can see how tempting it would be to try to have a quick word but I think you did the right thing leaving them in peace to enjoy their meal. I'm not surprised you say it made your day, it's made mine too and I wasn't anywhere near. Thanks for sharing that with us :)
