My storage of all things Jake has reached near capacity and so I've been having a sort out this evening to see just what I've got and put the scanner to work. We seem to spend quite a bit of time here discussing Jake Gyllenhaal's clothes - what he should wear, what he shouldn't and when he should just go without. So this feature, published in GQ back in June 2004, tickled me because in it Jake comments on the clothes that he's put in. There is, of course, a lot more than that, and around Jake's comments on his clothes are some others on his world. All from an interview in a hotel room amidst 'an explosion of laundry and luggage'.
Of the picture below, for instance, Jake comments: 'I do the H&M inside-out thing. You know, you buy something from there, you don't really love it completely, but you love what it's kind of doing. So you turn it inside out - like Bill Murray in Lost in Translation.'
'A lot of people say, 'You don't look like you're from LA.. I don't know what that means. LA gets a bad rap; Hollywood deserves the bad rap.'
And of Jake's childhood and the illustrious visitors to the family home: 'Yeah, she was Jamie Lee Curtis to everyone else, but when I was like 3 years old, she was Jamie to me... I've known her since I was born. It's definitely different, but it's not like my parents bought me a Mercedes for my first car. It's not that warped sense of the world.' 'My parents fought a lot when I was growing up... They didn't, to my mind, seem to treat each other very well. That affected me a lot. People go, 'Oh, fuck him, his life is so good - I couldn't ask for anything more. It doesn't mean that it wasn't the end of the world when I was 4 years old and my parents were fighting... I have a belief... that pretty much everyone - I don't care how happy they say they are, or how great their supposed upbringing was - everybody has enough pain to draw on from after they're 4... For a long time, I was like, 'Oh, I wish someone I knew died, so I could have something to work with.'
In the next picture, Jake discusses the imposing Cartier watch on his wrist. 'That watch is awesome. It looks heavy, but it's light and it's not too bulky. It felt really great to wear. It came with its own security guard.'
Jake once mentioned that he didn't care for dinosaurs and, speaking as a dinosaur lover, I wanted to know why. Here is a bit more explanation when Jake is talking about his Columbia career: 'I was taking a class in dinosaurs... We had to memorize every bone in every dinosaur. And I remember sitting in this class, like, 'What the fuck am I doing here? I have this huge opportunity in front of me.' So I just went from movie to movie, because I didn't want to go back to school. [My parents] both freaked out about it: 'You gotta finish college, Jake.' And I was like, 'No, I don't.' That was incredibly freeing for me.' (It's a lot more fun excavating dinosaur remains, Jake, honest.)
I know that the red jumper in the picture below is beloved by many. So what did Jake think about it? 'At first I wasn't so into the teeny-tiny Ralph Lauren sweater, but now I am, because it ended up looking really great in this photograph. But, yeah, it's pretty fitted.' I don't think it's just the sweater that ended up looking great in this photograph...
There is an interesting anecdote in the magazine about, what was then, a very recent incident, in which Jake and Kirsten Dunst 'decided to duck in to one of [the Sundance Festival's] makeshift spas for a supposedly relaxing scrubdown. Yet, when it was over, Gyllenhaal walked out and realized he had been duped into this... thing. This promotional, stand-next-to-this-product-and-smile photo op. It was one of the more whorish trade-offs of fame, and when Gyllenhaal recounts the incident the next day over lunch, his expression veers from guilt to confusion to acceptance. He doesn't want to take such blatant advantage of his celebrity, smiling for the camera in exchange for a massage and some free products. But then again... 'Then again,' he says, 'It was a really, really good massage.''
''My desire is not to change who I am,' Gyllenhaal admits with the tentative defiance of the almost famous. 'I don't want to do that right now - I don't want people to not like me. It's just a message I want to put out there. I don't want to be something that I'm not.''
And here you can match your 2004 taste in music to Jake's - I have eight of them on my MP3, but best not to admit which!
'I would really like people to know how to pronounce my last name. Correctly. Everywhere.'

Very good job on this Jake story today!
Thanks Anna! So glad you like it :D The pics looks great if you click on them :)
A fabulous, thought-provoking post WDW, this little retrospective contains some fascinating quotes from Jake and some really lovely pictures, which do indeed look even better "embiggened" ;-)
Lord how it hurts to read Jake's quote "Oh I wish someone I knew died,so I could have something to work with". The tragic irony of that quote is that we may well see another dimension of emotion in Jake when we see "Brothers", precisely because someone he knew and loved died in the middle of filming. :-( :-(
"I don't want to be something that I'm not".
With all the demands and vagaries of Hollyweird, that's another quote that could come back to bit him on the arse.
And his comments about how painful it was to hear his parents argue when he was a little boy just makes me want to hug him for all Eternity...but then I'd love to do that anyway...
Sorry to be a bit bluesy. Just mad about the boy...and sometimes I get a little sad about the boy...
Hi Nadine :) Sorry you're feeling bluesy. I trust none of these quotes come back to bite Jake on the arse - I don't see them that way and I don't post them for that. Jake's words chart his developing career.
The comment that Jake makes here about wishing he knew someone who had died so that he could work with that - well, it just got me. The young say these things and then the reality happens to them and they realise. Jake isn't 23 anymore. And so, yes, as you say, Brothers will have lessons learned in it. I long to see it.
The comment of Jake's about growing up with parents arguing is something I completely relate to and makes me feel very close to youngster Jake :) The things we have to go through to be the people we become :(
Hope you feel better :)
(((WDW))),I realise your only intention in posting these comments from Jake is to chart his progression as a person and a performer via various stages in his life and career.
I only worry that past quotes may come back to haunt Jake,as happens to so many others in the public eye, because of a less-than-honourable section of the media. They love to make stars only to break stars, and have a nasty habit of digging up old remarks and opinions to use as cudgels against their chosen "quarry".
Thanks Nadine :) I know that's the case. I get a lot of pleasure from Jake's old interviews and I just can't think like that because if I ever did I'd stop posting them.
I love to listen to Jake :D
Hey WDW! Thanks for this post, you know how I love your little trips down memory lane:)
But yeah, Nadine, that quote you mention is so poignant now :(
And I agree that it's a real minefield for anyone in the public eye, with the way the media can twist people's words and take them out of context. The more I think about it, I wouldn't blame Jake if he never gave another interview again, especially in print cos that's easier to manipulate than any other. But then if he did that they'd just make it up anyway, the poor boy can't win.
On a separate note, I'm probably in a minority of one but I really don't like the red jumper at all.
Hi TL! The poignancy of that quote just struck me too.
It brought out nostalgia in me that's for sure, clearing out the 'Jake Cupboard'! I'm not so keen on the little red jumoer myself but I love the thought of Jake looking at it and liking the photograph even though he didn't want to wear that jumper.
Lovely post WDW and poignant. Love that he is into Nina Simone and fitty...is that how it's spelled...:lol and James Taylor.
TY again. back soon when I'm up to it:)
xoxoxo
sass
great post! Jake has great taste in music..and i'm thankful for the teeny tiny Ralph Lauren sweater :)especially Maroon 5..sunday morning is definitely one of my all time favorites
Very interesting post! It's nice to revisit his old interviews.
I don't really understand what he meant with the H&M clothes, turning it inside out. I have a couple of basics from H&M but I don't think i can start wearing them inside out :P
Actually I kind of hope the Jake had finished his university, but then I am always thinking a bit as his sister/mom (ewwww... i know this sounds like of disgusting, considering I like to see him topless :P). I think the magic on the Ralph Lauren sweater picture is the exposed tummy!
I love "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor... but I can guess why it was on Jake's ipod. It's an essential song in the movie "Running on Empty" which Naomi wrote the script for and won a Golden Globe for.
Thanks for the post, really enjoyed it.
being a clothes hound myself, and liking to wear stuff inside out whenever appropriate, although I dont have a PHILOSOPHY about it, like Jake, I loved this post!
I think the Ralph Lauren sweater is more pink, than red. Gotta be really lean to wear that kind of sweater. With a lovely firm and furry belly, to boot. Tee hee that Jake liked the picture.
I thot his comment about "I wish somebody would die so I could work on my pain issues. . " was pretty funny, very Holden Caulfield, and Jake riffing on reality, with a touch of irony, and doing what he does, in interviews - also telling tales on his parents, which seems to amuse both himself and his sis.
I cant see making assumptions about Jake's personal life and feelings based on interviews.
Yeah it must be interesting to find oneself feeling used and still kinda liking the benefits. Wonder how many clothes models and actors get to keep. I worked for awhile as a tv reporter and Christmas time got loads of gifts from advertisers. It was embarrassing. Kind of. I imagine you become used to it, although one DOES wonder about the cost of fame, no? RDJr said it's a bitch. OF course. Gotta be.
Hi Sass:D Love to hear about Jake and his music - what a mix of tastes, and I think that's reflected in the music tastes of his fans. Like that.
Hi Nicole - I kenew you'd like the Maroon 5 ref - as do I. I love that song :D
hey Winterbird! I'm such a scruff and I often mess around with clothes and wear them inside out but that's because I can't afford good stuff. Jake can get the best and I love that he plays with the clothes.
Definitely the best thing about the little jumper pic is the furry belly :P Oh my...
One of the many reasons why I love doing this site is because of the gems that I learn - I had no idea about the Fire and Rain track - thanks very much for that :)
Hi Pia! I love thinking Jake liked that icture :) Jake lies/liked to spill in these interviews and I love to listen. I've worked in the media too and the things you get offered... And Jake must be used to that all the time but I think he's aware of that.
Good night, Wet dark!
Great post!
Jake likes the music of Caetano Veloso! Blah!
I think the Caetano very boring! Hehehehehehe
Wonderful look back, WDW! A mix of emotions for sure but Jake has been going strong thru it all. Looking great doing it and having cool musical taste. Good on Jake for sure!
Hi Monica! I have no idea what Caetano sounds like - I should check them out :D
Hey Get Real :D I'm so glad you liked the taste of nostalgia here - and I did enjoy the little bit of music in there. Rufus, even then :D And I love the idea of Jake looking at these pictures, just as we do :D
It's so nice to see some old things that Jake spoke in some interviews and see how our boy matured.
We all go through that.
That's so true, Monica :)
Off to bed - catch up with you all tomorrow - and I do believe it's Friday... :D
I love "Fire and Rain" by James Taylor... but I can guess why it was on Jake's ipod. It's an essential song in the movie "Running on Empty"
Even more than that, it's a classic American song by a classic American songwriter who is still relevant today and who happens to have ties to Martha's Vineyard (Carly Simon still lives there, raised their children there; James Taylor's brother owns an inn there).
Okay, see, this is where Jake and I are different. Way different. Jake wears clothese inside out intentionally, as part of a statement of personal style. I wear something inside out by accident, and then I wonder why the buttons are on the wrong side of the shirt, and I'm worried about being late because it's taking so much longer to buttn them. :-(
In the winter, I walk down the aisles of the supermarket with the strap from my trenchcoat trailing after me, because I don't know it's dragging. It may be a style statement in some parts of the world, but I'm just clueless. :-(
If Jake did it, it would be a hot new style.
I love hearing about my favorite stars' musical tastes. I love JT too, and of many favorites, my absolute favorite is Sweet Baby James, which will forever remind me of Brokeback now - there is a young cowboy, he lives on the range.
And to take the level of discussion down a notch, that second pic of Jake is probably one of my very favorites. Those yummy shoulders in that cardigan, the partially untucked shirt, and, well, the rest . . . makes me think dirty thoughts . . . ;) Not only is Jake handsome, but he's got a sexiness about him that irresistable. :)
I love James Taylor too..especially Carolina in my Mind for obvious reasons :)
Caetano Veloso is the best singer of Brazil!
Morning all! Friday, and not a moment too soon :)
Great to see you all - and thanks for the info on James Taylor, JTfan and anon. I always like hearing about Jake's music taste - it is such a mix. And morning Nicole :D
Hi Paul - I do that too, trailing chords etc and I can never be bothered to tie my shoe laces.
Have a great day everyone!
Morning everyone!
I would highly recomment anyone to watch "Running On Empty" if you haven't. It used to be in my all-time Top 5 and I remember I starved myself for a week to save lunch money to buy this film's Laser Disc (remember this format before DVD?... ok, I am exposing my age again).
I remember Jake mentioned he was on the set when they were filming it and he felt very proud (not remember the exact word) to see River Phoenix act... that remark reminds me of when James Dean used to watch Marlon Brandon act.
Good morning Winterbird! Can you believe I've not seen Running on Empty? I must rectify that. I love the thought that Jake listens to the songs from films that mean something to him, just as we all do. And that is very interesting about Jake and River, I remember something about that.
oh yes, you have to rectify that! I'm sure you'll go buy a James Taylor afterwards! I have a battered VHS copy of "Running On Empty" I can lend you, do you still have a VCR? :P
Thanks Winterbird :D Unfortunately my VCR is Kaput - so I must add this to my mist of things to buy :) And James Taylor by the sound of it...
WDW, I urge you to see "Running on Empty" as soon as you can. I have a videocassette of it. The audition scene blows me away every time. It reminds me of my own inability to pass a piano without wanting to play it.
That was a great article WDW!
Mainly because it shows a beautifully sincere Jake Gyllenhaal like we are not going to see him anymore in interviews, I'm afraid...
And that quote of Jake saying he had wanted someone he knew to die to have something to work with is so moving to me because I've been there too, sadly.:/
Have a great day, WDW and thanks for all the wonderful job you're doing with your blog.:)
Good morning, Wet Dark!
My day started well with the victory of Rafael Nadal!
Yesterday remember that last month the Rufus was doing some concerts in Brazil. Unfortunately it did not come in my city, but I had the opportunity to see him in an interview programme of Jô Soares (a presenter on Letterman style).
I was delighted with the style of Rufus.
I will leave the videos of the interview for you (it starts showing in Portuguese, but it is all in English.
The first video is of Rufus singing live:

Here we all are on the brink of a Wet,Dark and Wild Weekend - yay!
Must agree with you,Anon 01.52,that second photograph pushes all of my buttons too! As does the exposed tum and hip-bone contours in the skinny pink jumper shot. Yum!
As for Jake's iPod list, the stand out track for me is "Feel" by Robbie Williams, which carried an extra frisson today when, spookily enough, it was played on the radio at work. Definitely one of the Robster's finest, musically, lyrically and in the emotional delivery, from another beautiful, crazy mixed up boy for whom I have a massive soft spot ;-)
Hi there everyone! I'm ready for that Wet dark and Wild weekend, Nadine, all three glorious days of it :D
Thanks for the links, Monica. I love Rufus :D
Running around at the moment, so see you all later!
