'One of the good guys' - Get ready for a celebration of Heath's work

July is approaching, which means that we can expect much more from the sensational publicity campaign that is heralding The Dark Knight to our theatre screens. Hot on the heels of Empire magazine's Dark Knight cover, we have Total Film. The whole article is presented as an exercise in Joker vandalism, with all of Maggie's words as Rachel ('Stupid girl') Dawes words scribbled out, photographs of Batman grafittied and comments about the Joker highlighted - all in big red pen - the colour of the Joker's smile.

But left untouched is a section in which Christian Bale, Emma Thomas (producer) and Christopher Nolan pay tribute to what it was like to work with Heath Ledger who brought this terrifyingly charismatic Joker to larger than life.

Christian Bale: Heath's performance is fucking fantastic. As was working with him. he was great fucking company. Wonderful guy. Fantastic working with somebody who will immerse themselves as he does... did. I hope that this will celebrate his work... People love to talk about actors staying in character all the time but it's just totally implausible for seven months straught, You do what's appropriate, you do what's necessary... It's not for me to tell anybody or pretend to have insights beyond what I absolutely know, but my instincts are that [the idea Heath was disturbed by playing The Joker] is ridiculous. Heath was somebody who, like myself... it's what I act for... I act for that immersion. It's not an unusual thing. And from working with him and knowing him, I don't think that was unusual for him, that's all.

Christopher Nolan: It was absolutely wonderful working with Heath. I'm very, very excited for people to see his performance. I think he really has done something pretty incredible in the film. And at this point I'm just very, very keen for people to get their eyes on it and enjoy it.

Emma Thomas: Heath was a hugely talented actor and really just one of the good guys. With a role like that - and being as serious an actor as he was - going in, I wondered if he was going to be somebody who would inhabit the character at all times. He was really amazing, in that he could turn it on and then switch it off between takes.

Maggie in hot NYC

Rachel Dawes may not have got a word in edgeways with this article, thanks to the Joker, but here we have Maggie Gyllenhaal at the end of last week in the heat of NYC.

In need of some Jake

Nice, but rather sad post WDW. :) Thank you. Celebrate is the right thing to do, but.......

I haven't seen that Jake pic before...any info?

Hey Ruby Rubes :D I've been distracted this evening as we rented Jumper on DVD - just for Doug Liman research you understand - Mr WDW was not impressed... :D

Sorry this was sad, I wanted to include these TDK comments and it's difficult to know when's suitable.

I'm afraid to say that's another picture I found deep in my hard drive and I don't know where it's from - anyone know? Looks like it could be TDAT promotion in Berlin but I could well be wrong :D

Hope you're having a good evening!

Hope you're having a good evening!

I'm doing that laminating job we were talking about earlier The room smells of warm plastic. I think I might be getting a little high. :/ I'm not sure whether to open a window to clear it, or open a bottle of wine to help it along. :D

Hi, WDW & Ruby and everypeeps - the sexy picture of Jake is new to me, also - deep in yr hard drive, WDW? - gosh Id love Jake deep in MY hard drive - ;)

I cried my eyes out about Heath for a few weeks after his death and every now and then I tear up, but I am so glad that sweet man has given us so much, and more to come! So the post today didnt make me feel sad, just loving, Heath on the roof, with his great sweet smile.

Maggie, lookin' good, in the city heat.

Hey where's our pal from East St. Louis? That big river, the Mississippi, is flexing her muscles.

Hi Pia! I like to keep Jake safe in my hard drive and on my external drive too :D

I'm like you - I get some extremely sad moments, sometimes in my sleep, but I am so proud of Heath's Joker and I want to enjoy him. I am so glad this post made you feel loving. I like to read these memories.

I've heard there's been some stormy weather - hope you're ok *)

Hey Rubes - I didn't see you there - that sounds like some enjoyable bit of laminating! I can only offer one piece of advice - open that bottle of wine :D Can't wait to see you tomorrow!

Thank you! :)

Hi Pia! *-)

I'm not really sad today. I just think it's a bloody f***** shame that Heath won't be along for the TDK ride.

Looking forward to seeing you too WDW. We probably have stuff to catch up on.

Right, I've done my homework for the evening, time for that glass of wine.

Very nice post as always. I feel the way Pia does at this point...loving and with a sentimental heart. I know that TDK will be beyond huge and his work will be recognized.

Maggie looks good for those HOT days we had last week. She will be very busy soon.

Beautiful pic of Jake! You always manage to surprise us with new (old) gems like that. Adore Jake as always.

Thank you Sandy! :D

Hey Ruby - have some wine - we have a lot of catching up to do tomorrow. I'm being forced to watch Master and Commander... :\ I share that about TDK - Heath should be there for the excitement of the red carpet - he just should be there. I'm glad we'll all be thinking of him :)

Hi Get Real! Posting at the same time :D 'Loving and with a sentimental heart' - I love that. Maggie's going to be so busy - it'll be new for her, that kind of exposure. I'm so glad you like the pic of our lovely Jake :D

I like Master and Commander. :D

I kind of like it, but it's a bit gory and a bit too watery - too much bad weather as well. I like Paul Bettany in it though :D

Hi WDW. Please can you hum the tune from the Twilight Zone? It's just a bit spooky for me that you've chosen to do a Heath post today. I was thinking about him a lot last night (I think about him every day, but especially on Tuesdays - 21 weeks yesterday ;-) ).

I was talking about him on "Planet Heath" too and lit some virtual candles for him and consequently, last night,I had my first Heath dream. It was very mixed up and confusing and I won't bore you with the details (poor TL was subjected to that in an e-mail earlier today) but it felt good to have some kind of bittersweet contact with him,if only in a dream. :-/

It makes me feel proud of him, happy, and yet so cheated on his behalf to read all the heartfelt, revelatory and wonderful things those who worked with him on TDK say about him in this great "Total Film" article and elsewhere. We can only wonder and imagine how he would have shone and sparkled on what would have been very much HIS red carpet, with all due respect to Christian,Maggie et al.

I saw some new stills from the film today and a new Alternative trailer that's been put up on Youtube - absolutely mind-blowing!

I can't wait to see the premiere hoopla (thanks Jake) and yet I've got a lump in my throat at the thought of it,am itching to see the whole film in all its glory and yet began to well up at the new trailer. I am such a sentimental old fool :-( I just hope all the praise that I know will be heaped upon Heath for his last complete performance will be of some comfort to his family and friends.

I really hope the cast, especially Maggie of course, manage to get many well-deserved thrills and plaudits throughout the promotions and premieres for TDK next month, even though it's bound to be difficult for them.

Jake's going to be filming in July and will have lots to keep him busy and occupy his mind. I suspect he may well be glad of that. :-/

And that photo you've unearthed to close today's post,WDW - just gorgeous!

Evening Nadine - it's bitter and sweet that this post coincided with what you're feeling but I'm glad you're also looking forward to the 'hoopla' - it's wonderful that TDK is dedicated to Heath and we're all going to be thinking of him, and at the same time it should still be a great moment for Maggie and Christian et al. Isn't it a lovely pic :D Have a good night :)

Heath.... and yes, bittersweet... I guess I will always feel like that when I think of him. I think apart from Jake, Heath always has the "light up the whole room" kind of smile.

And I agree, celebration is the key word. I'll keep this in mind when I watch TDK.

i am having a bad case of hay fever today, I guess I'll give in and take some meds and go to sleep. I am saving my strength for the oxford weekend :)

night all.

I take time out now and then, in fact, quite often, to watch the Cant Take My Eyes Off Of You video from Ten Things I Hate About You. Those long legs! That smile! I do love todays picture on the roof so much!

p.s. back on topic which IS you know who.

WDW will you kindly remove the Jake picture in blue suit with blue background. it's making me wet dark and wild. Jake, cut it out, stop it, enuff already!

Morning all! Just dropping by quickly to say "hi" and hope everyone's ok, as I haven't been on here for a couple of days:)

Thanks for the Total Film snippets. I'm still torn between dreading and not being able to wait for TDK. And I still haven't watched INT:( Poor Heath...It's not right:(

On a separate happier note, that pic of Jake is new to me too - and bloody gorgeous it is too!:D Even if it is far too early in the morning to be thinking the thoughts it's putting in my head;)

Good morning everyone! It's supposed to be rainy but it's gorgeous out there :D

Morning Winterbird! 'Bittersweet' is right indeed. I have terrible hayfever too - I am so wheezy I sound like Marlon Brando - have a lovely day :D Can't wait to see you at the weekend.

Good morning Pia! No, you have to sit and look at comfy sexy Jake all day!

Safe travels to everyone making their way to Oxford for the Brokie bash :D

Have a great day everyone :)

Thanks for another wonderful post, WDW, I think I'd explode if I couldn't tell anyone how anxious I am to watch this movie with Heath being an unforgettable iconic Joker in it...

Oh and Heath on the roof with that impossible orange scarf and that gorgeous warm smile of his...

And, finally : Jake in a blue suit and that come-hither look in his eyes, mmmmm...:D
