A Saturday with Jake and a taste of style

This last weekend, Jake Gyllenhaal proved himself to be not only bendy but speedy and a bit of a handful, requiring three posts on Sunday. As we hadn't seen Jake for three weeks and because there is no such thing as too much Jake, I'm not complaining, but it does mean that some people may have missed something. Therefore, here is a brief recap.

On Saturday, Jake and Reese were seen leaving a private yoga class in Santa Monica. It was observed that Jake wore socks with his sandals and drank from his bottle without using his hands. There has been speculation by people who were not there that Jake did the Sun Salutation and the Tree, both of which can be performed on the Wii.

Also on Saturday, Jake surprised us all by contrarily dressing himself up while removing his socks in order to see an early screening of Brothers in a Hollywood studio. This time, the spatter on his left shoulder indicated that Jake had not perfected his drinking from the bottle without hands technique.

Meanwhile, pictures came to light from periods in which Nailed actually was filming, which showed the cast getting to grips with Parkour the Monkey. I realise that the speed of events yesterday meant that not everybody had the chance to recount their own monkey story. Please feel free for this post.

Despite the general discomfort and unease felt amongst the fandom at Jake's apparent disregard for the rules governing sock use, there is some room for comfort.

Continuing the animal motif, an article in the LA Times this week took a look at some of the ugly ducklings who have now become Hollywood's swans. There on the list is Jake. Admittedly, their choice of picture of Jake (from the 2001 Sundance Festival), or 'Video game dork' as they call him, is not one of his best. It does, however, show that Jake took his training for the Prince of Persia very seriously and was well on the way to level 5. I do not advise anyone to look at the picture of George Clooney.

Nevertheless, today Jake is regarded as one of the most stylish young men in Hollywood, with praise heaped on his tuxedoed shoulders at the 2006 Oscars for the way in which he can wear a suit. As this article in the aftermath of the Oscars says: 'The temptation for young stars is to stand out from the crowd by trying something new. But Jake Gyllenhaal, at the 2006 awards as a nominee for Best Supporting Actor for Brokeback Mountain, won raves for his classic tux designed by Ralph Lauren, with bow tie and a white pocket square.'

Jake has also, of course, not only been interviewed in glossy magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair - he has modelled for them. Jake's 'simple and understated look' has been the subject of fashion commentators who have suggested how we too can develop that relaxed style, whether going down the Peruvian knit cap path or not. Jake takes his choice of clothing seriously.

Wow, go away for a few days and we get tons of Jakeness!! :D

Thank you WDW for keeping us up to date. Good for him doing yoga. Have done it a bunch of times and gone to yoga retreats even. Would have loved to see him do Downward Facing Dog. ;p

Eh, whatever to him wearing socks with the sandals. We have all made fashion don'ts. And yes it is better than the Crocs, lol.

At least he looked fantastic at the movie screening and so cute with the monkey! Wonder if it will be in the movie. :p

So glad to hear Brothers is getting very good early reviews. Keeping fingers crossed that it continues and that he makes it to the film festivals in the Fall. Great to see Naomi there for support. Have missed pics of them together.

Jake sure did blossom into a beautiful adult but I think he was also great as a geeky kid. Makes me appreciate him even more for it.

Hope everyone is having a good Monday.

Good to see you Get Real - Hope you had a good break :D

How much would I like to see Jake do Downward Facing Dog...? More than a lot that's for sure :P

Jake looked great at the screening - he always looks so wonderful, the oddities such as the Socks n Crocs stand out more than they would for the rest of us, well me, whose entire wardrobe is a fashion don't. It's been wonderful watching Jake grow :)

That monkey photo is my new desktop - I adore it.

Great news about Brothers. I'm keeping my fingers crossed about the festivals too.

Yes this was a weekend that needed a kinda round-up, WDW! Maybe today's post meant to be a a wind-DOWN, but you've kept the temperature up and running. Whoops! Too many metaphors! but never too much Jake!

Hadnt seen the Vogue series before, you are seriously serious in your research! Merci merci merci!

Hi Pia! Glad you enjoyed by wind-down-round up. I don't want to rush past all these lovely pics. The Vogue pics are absolutly gorgeous. I'm lucky enough to have a copy and I treasure it. Hope you're having a good Monday!

I am actually having a good Monday but a funny thing happened on my way to somewhere: there is a handsome fella on the horizon, friend asked if I'd noticed if he wore a wedding ring. I said, no, I have my hands full right now with Jake. (am I seriously nuts?)

How nice to have that Vogue! Very hot Jake.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

You're not nuts, Pia. Well, at least no more nuts than me and others. In all my recent and onoing troubles with prowlers, I've had dreams in which Jake is out there patrolling to protect me :D But yeah, when you have Jake, everyone else just has to fit in :D

Batoning down the hatches for tonight.

For all Brit David Fincher nuts, Fight Club is on Film4 at 11pm.

WDW, great and very funny post, thank you * :D So needed on a Monday. As is Parkour the divine monkey :)

Good luck with battening down those hatches.

I saw most of Fight Club once, WDW, then fell asleep and missed the end - SO annoying - & I'd loved it up to that point.

Hi Nouskie! Thanks, I needed a laugh. Loving the monkey (thanks to Pia and Nadine for the Parkour jokes :D) - so I'm all ready for your Green money story. I believe I told my red colobus monkey story. I have fond memories of a black-and-white colobus too - the furriest monkey I've ever seen. If Jake had one of those on his arm he'd know it.

I haven't see all of Fight Club either so I'm recording it. The hatches are shut and I'm crossing my fingers :)

It's not much of a story. A painted green monkey (now illegal) was placed on me, aged 3, while at the seaside. My dad complained and it was removed, but the memory of its little vulnerable face (and green fur) endured. End of story. Nite nite WDW *

Fab post,WDW :D We definitely needed a recap post, so thanks for doing such a brilliant one.

I actually think the so called "Video Dork" pic is pretty hot - it's the tongue action;) But dear oh dear that Clooney pic!!! That'll teach me to ignore your advice and click on it anyway;) Is it me or does Matt Damon look exactly the same as does now just a few years younger?

Hope you're keeping safe, WDW. You know where we all are if you need us :)

Awww at Anouska's poor little Green monkey :(

I'm listening to the new Coldplay album atm, not sure if it's a grower or if it's just not very good???

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ahhh Anouska - poor monkey :( Its poor little face. I'm going to have to have a GnT now - all your fault... Night!

hi TL! Glad you liked the recap. But that dork pic is not hot, ok? Jake looks about 15 in it! George Clooney was scarey... I've bought the Coldplay album too - they accidentally sold it to me in Smiths halfprice :D I like three songs but that's it at the mo. But they're always a grower. Mindyou I've been listening to it for almost a week. Thanks for being there :)

WDW, thought you would want to know, they are doing a US Top Gear and comedian Adam Carolla is hosting it. Guess he is better than Jay Leno, imo.

Take care WDW and everyone!

Anonymous said...

Haven't gotten the new Coldplay but I do like the single Vida, something or other, lol.

I don't have any monkey stories but my cousin went on safari in Africa last year with his wife and they said the monkeys would just climb in and out of their tent. Not something any of us are used to.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real! no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no - that's a no :D That's what I think to anyone but the great James Clarkson,Richard Hammond and James May presenting Top Gear! I just finished reading Hamster's autobiography about his recent accident and it was such a good book and an incredible account. Can't they just import it? But anyone's an improvement on Leno I suppose... Thanks for putting a smile on my face!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I like that song too, Get Real.

When I was travelling round Africa, we used to sit by the campfire and eat our tea while being armed with catapults as the baboons would come in and nick our food. The blighters, and their teeth are bigger than lions'. I had mongooses living under my tent - that was better :) I wonder what Jake would make of a safari...

WDW, is Jake is patrolling in your neighbourhood, I'd move there in a heart beat! :)

Excellent post. Very witty as well. I'd say Jake's dress style is like an understated, not-trying-hard-at-all Ralph Lauren advert.

The crocs, the socks, the cardigans... it only means he's human. A lovely human.

I wouldn't say Jake was an ugly duckling, but he certainly has grown into a handsome man - better than what most would expect judging from his teenage years pics.

twistedlogic said...

Jake does not look 15 in that pic! He's got stubble and everything! I would've said he looked 18/19. Ok, that would still make him young enough to be my son if he was that age now, but at least he'd be legal.
Lucky you getting the Coldplay album half price. I only paid £7 anyway, but I'm starting to feel a little ripped off:( The first two albums were growers (I loved X&Y straight away though) but they had at least 3 or 4 stand out tracks on each one. there's nothing here that really stands out for me. And the opening of the last track is a blatant rip off of Where The Streets Have No Name - I thought the Joshua Tree had started playing!
This is all relevant to Jake because Chris Martin is married to Gwyneth Paltrow who satrred with Jake in Proof ;)

And speaking of Top Gear, I was searching the net a few weeks ago for,er...knitting patterns or jam recipes or something like that and I came across a site that had Top Gear slash!!!! I mean, who in their right mind would even THINK that, let alone write or read it. Each to their own and all that but...wtf??!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I wish he was Winterbird :D Oh yes, a wonderful human (with crocs).

Hi TL! No, he looks a kiddie! I loved X&Y too, in fact I've loved all their albums but this one is definitely a slow grower, but I'll persevere. Problem is, when you start liking the album Coldplay are everywhere and then I'm sick to death of them... I'm going to pretent I didn't hear you mention Top Gear Slash - I have my fingers in my ears - lalalalala Bad TL!

twistedlogic said...

Yeah, sorry about mentioning the T** G*** S****, WDW. I thought I was over the shock and trauma of it but you and Get Real talking about it brought it all back.
This calls for lots of SNIT replays ;)

And we'll have to agree to disagree about the pic;)

Anonymous said...

Top Gear slash... LOL!! that's the funniest thing I've heard today, thanks TL!

I've come across a House slash site... Hugh Laurie, now he is slash material :P

sorry WDW!... slashy minds are usually very active.

Talk about teenage Jake, I wonder if young Jake (DD era give or take)'s jet black hair was his own idea?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL - it's aonna take a lot of SNITs to get me over that thought!

Hi Winterbird! Noooo, Hugh Laurie is not slash material! These slashy minds are too active :D

I think Jake liked to dye his hair. I suppose that actors like to play with how they're seen by their audience and by themselves. Just look at Jake's Jarhead experience, scared and excited all at the same time. Very interesting question :D

Anonymous said...

I recall Jake saying in one interview that he obsesses about his hair. He's not the only one!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia - he's definitely not the only one! And it's not just his hair either. I dont blame Jake obsessing over his hair, it's so gorgeous :) (except in Jarhead and MMile ;D)

Morning everyone :)
Thank you so much WDW for the recap, was really helpful since I had missed some things, among which the monkey on Nailed's set... man, who'd have said that one day I'd have been jealous even of a monkey for having the chance to touch Jake :-/ ...this is a strange world..
And really good news about Brothers test screeing! (btw may I ask you what a R-rating is?) I'm so looking forward to seeing it, and as you say WDW, hopefully it'll be screened at next Autumn's Film festivals.. a roman screening would be perfect, wouldn't it? Even though it looks like a good Venice FF movie too :) Fingers crossed ;)

Have a great day everyone :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good morning everyone! Beautiful day :D Thanks for keeping me company last night.

Morning Good Girl :) Only Jake can make us jealous of a monkey... 'R' is a US rating of aged 17 I believe. Over here most of Jake's films get a 15.

Have a good day everyone :)

Oh I worked out how things are going to be, I have to stay away from the iternet for a couple of days to have the greatest news ever...Jake doing yoga and bouilding up that drop-dead gorgeous body of his, private screenings of Brothers, time for some Brothers publicity coming closer and closer, film festivals, the movie itself...wow...It's gonna be a hell of a period people!:)

Have a great day WDW and everyone!

Isn't it typical,WDW?! I got the chance of a little time online that I wasn't expecting last night - but when it came to posting here techical gremlins set in and I couldn't make it happen! And my e-mail and internet facility on my mobile was up the creek at the time too,so I couldn't even contact you that way either! Aaaaarghh!(I've just solved the problem with my phone by turning it off and on again - isn't technology wonderful?!! - it's about the equivalent of fixing a dogdy telly by smacking the side of it good and hard).

But enough of such inconsequential waffle and on to Jake! I'm not just saying this due to my natural Jacob-centred bias, but while that "before he was famous" photo of "Jailbait Jake" isn't the most flattering I've ever seen I certainly don't think it's anything for him to be embarrassed about now - unlike one G.Clooney and, worse still,Justin Timberlake! Not that JT has ever floated my boat since he's been famous, but I don't suppose he'll be losing any sleep over that!

Talking of losing sleep it might be TL's fault if I can't drop off tonight, tortured by thoughts of "Top Gear" slash! A night of passion between the Hamster and Clarkson?! It's the stuff of which nightmare's are made! No,actually, the thought of poor little monkeys, painted green and exploited by photographers is more likely to keep me awake :-(

I need to think brighter thoughts. Must go back and linger over the great photos you chose for this post. The black and white shot of cool dude Jake in the light suit and sunglasses, leaning provocatively in the French window always hits the spot for me! ;-)

Jake has done a lot of yoga over the years. It was part of the mix when he was building muscle for "Jarhead."

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Xenia - I can't wait for Brothers (much as I hate to wish away the summer) but I'm definitely ready for another film! Rendition seems like such a long time ago now. Hope you're having a good day!

Hey Nadine :D Sorry to hear you're having more techno probs. I'm still trying to get the thought of Top Gear slash out of my head... The GQ picture of Jake is one of my absolute favourites - stunning.

Hi Paul :) I'm not surprised Jake's been into yoga for a while, having studied eastern religion and been so interested in meditation. I like the mix of the power and the controlled movement.

Hope everyone's having a good day - I need more coffee :D

The USAan government is sending everybody money through the mail - my wierd check arrived today.
WTF! But today Im celebrating - what am I celebrating? - oh, I graduated from University ten years ago. :D :D

Hope everypeeps all over the globe that love Jake is happy today.

Hi Pia! I've been out for a function at work and there was almost no food for veggies so starving! Your talk of food's not helping :D Hope you're having a great day :)

Hey there Paul - that's good to hear - it's getting close now :D
