Jake the Guest Teacher - Ask yourself 'Why do they want me to see this movie?'

Back in March this year, we saw Jake on Sticks attending the LA Conservation Corps Spring Luncheon, alongside such figures as Maria Shriver. The primary mission of the Corps, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, 'is to provide at-risk young adults and school-aged youth with opportunities for success through job skills training, education and work experience with an emphasis on conservation and service projects that benefit the community.'

Jake Gyllenhaal was just one of the celebrity attendees and we learnt that he had been visiting the corps in order to get to know one of the two young people he gave an award to for research into a future role. You can see numerous little pictures from the event here. More recently, we have seen a video of Jake supporting New Eyes for the Needy. I hope you will excuse me if I repeat this video here, for charitable reasons obviously and not at all because Jake is so hot in this video I'd do whatever he says. And that is the power of the beautiful and spellbinding figure of Jake Gyllenhaal - and that's why it's well worth having him as your charity's public face. Incidentally, it may be my imagination but I think that this video and this luncheon date from around the same time - I also think that could be the same suit. But I digress...

A recurring theme on WDW is how Jake uses his celebrity and his public face and appeal to promote charities and causes he believes in, especially those for the young. Back in 2002, the young Jake along with 'his buddy, Ethan Hawke, author of two books' visited the 'fifth-period English class' at Dominguez High School in Compton, California, to be guest teachers. Apparently Guest Teacher Jake was 'dreamy eyed and all sexy, messy hair' - clearly one way to get the attention of students. The visit was 'part of Friday's Teach for America Week, an annual nationwide program in which professionals became guest teachers at schools in low-income communities.'

However, the students had other thoughts on their mind: 'Juan Patino, 16, raises his hand. "Are you guys dating any celebrities?" "That's not interesting," Hawke says politely and then turns the tables. "Who are you dating? Any celebrities?" "No," Patino answers flatly. "Well, I'm married," Hawke says, pausing, trying to get a jolt of something out of the students. "I think Jennifer Lopez would excite this room," he adds, as the teenagers laugh, breaking their shy and reserved selves out of star-struckdom. Soon a conversation with the actors results, ranging from moviemaking to making decisions about life.'

Apparently, Jake had been the only actor scheduled to be part of the visit but 'over dinner the night before, Gyllenhaal had invited Hawke.' "I'm an actor and have been in films since I was your guys' age, 16," Gyllenhaal told the class. "I went to college for two years, dropped out and started making more movies. But my goal has been to pick movies that have a political statement," he said. With Hawke's help, he tried to engage the students in a conversation about the movie choices they make, encouraging them to add thoughtful flicks to the action-packed ones on their lists.'

"There are a lot of people who have power over what you see and you have a choice," he said. "It's more important to know what people are saying to you. We have the power to speak our minds, to get more than one opinion. When you go to the theater, just think to yourselves, 'Why is it there? Who put it there? Why do they want me to see this movie?'"

Jake confessed that he had dropped out of Columbia - although it's worth bearing in mind that that had been in order to become a fullscale movie star. He also admitted that 'he never used to like to read that much, he added. "In college we read a book a day. It's not possible for me to read a book a day. But now I pick the books I want to read," he said, adding that serious reading has only been part of his life for two or three years. "Books are important as movies," he added as the hour came to an end, followed by a class photo with the stars and a few autographs. "I'm not much older than these students," said Gyllenhaal, 21, after the students left the room. "But I think they really understood what I was talking about."'

another early post! Are you still in paid employment or is dinner on me tonight? ;-)

Hmmm, is Jake contradicting himself? (again) hasn't he said that he doesn't choose movies for political reasons but because of the emotional, human element to the storytelling? I guess in reality it's a mix of both

I read one of Ethan Hawke's novels. I can't remember what it was called, but I remember that I liked it. It was a kind of teenager love/road story, I think

Hey Rubes,hi WDW! I was surprised to find a new post here too and pleased because it concentrates on one of the facets of Jake's character that I admire the most, his charitable and altruistic activities (yes,WDW,quite apart from the fact that he's so easy on the eye as well as big-hearted and well-meaning). Can't get enough of this Jake.

It made me smile too, Rubes, that the Jake-quotes here were contradictory to opinions and motivations he's proffered since. Not sure what political or emotional messages he's hoping we'll get from "PoP" so I'll be looking very hard...while wiping the dribble off my chin from lusting after his torso and chiselled features ;-)

We've got to cut him some slack though,eh,because who doesn't have fluctuating views and reactions according to mood, age and circumstance? Oh, just me and Jake then ;-)

Hi Ruby Rubes :D I'm having to fit in an early post because I'm out to dinner with you :) All your fault.... I think it's selfless of us to continue our search for the best British pud for Jake.

As far as Jake's motivations for choosing movies, he does changes his mind! But this was quite a while ago and I suppose he had a lot less choice available to him than he does now. Interesting...

I had no idea Ethan Hawke wrote novels.

See you later xx

Hi Nadine - I love this Jake too :D Well, I love every Jake to be fair :) I can think of plenty of reasons to do PoP!! Most of them aren't political...

Hope everyone's having a good day :D And I have tomorrow off - yeehaw!

just to be clear - I meant no criticism of our wonderful boy (cause I really do think he's rather special!) I'm sure if anyone read all my posts here or at DC (please don't, you'll be bored) there would be contradictions galore! And of course I think it's a positive sign if someone is ready to modify their views and retain an open mind. Definitely not just you and Jake, Nadine. :-)

Oh I found the best British pud. It's in a fish restaurant in Lymington.

Hey Ruby :D Jake's mind is a fascinating place :D Kind of matches that gorgeous sexy exterior. Sigh...

You can't go wrong with a treacle tart and custard. Mr WDW's favourite is Spotted Dick and custard but I'm not so sure I'd recommend that pud - ugh...

O thank you WDW for an EARLY post to cleanse the palette (pun intended) - and thanks Ruby since you're the reason -

Gimme contradictions. I love contradictions.

Also entering into movie choices: friendship, favors, and moolah - I dont think there's an actor or performer who would say otherwise -
Weather here is cool sunny and wonderful!

Enjoy your treacle tarts WDW and Ruby, and one another: I know you will.

((((Nadine))) ! ! ! !

Enjoy your treacle tarts!

Sorry WDW, in response to your earlier post, but hair doesn't grow faster in the rain. Hair usually grows faster in summer because you are sweating. So pray for sun to enhance Jake's princely locks.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia! Glad to see it's cooled down and good to see you :D

Hey there anon :) In that case Jake and his hair are in luck because there's some warm sunshine about today. I'm definitely praying for sun :D

Hiya!

Going to the last post, thanks for sharing the Maggie stuff. She is wonderful but I do think that pic on that Mag. cover is not good. Agree with Pia that it seemed like a compilation of older interviews. All good though... As for her being asked or talking about Jake, well he gets asked about her in most interviews. I guess that is what you have to deal with when you are siblings in the same industry. While I wish both would have their interviews focused on their movies, I do love hearing them talk about their relationship as brother and sister. Not to mention when Maggie or Jake mentions Peter. It's all good! :)

Her words about Heath were very touching. It must be a double edged sword for TDK cast. They need to promote their movie and share Heath's incredible performance but it must be hard to talk about at the same time. :/

On to fun stuff! How cool that Jake was a guest teacher! One of the things I appreciate most about him is his charity work and how he has quietly done things to give back. I like Ethan Hawke too. Didn't know then knew each other.

Have a wonderful time tonight, WDW and Ruby! Glad the heat has broken, Pia. It is lovely here too.

Xoxo.

Hi Get Real! I bought the Tatler at lunch and the picture of Maggie is just terrible - no fault of Maggie's, the photographer and editor. I'll be interested to read more of the interview. I always love to hear Maggie talk about Jake and Peter - and about Heath. Can't be easy.

I didn't know Jake knew Ethan either. Teachers weren't like Jake in my day....

Hope you're having a good day :D

Hey Rubes! I hope you didn't think I was having a dig about your take on contradictory Jake, bless his heart. I was sharing a smile with you about it but sometimes an affectionate leg-pull or intended irony doesn't come across in bald print xxx

Oh and ((((Pia))) - right back at ya!!! xxx

I was so happy to read this - there's nothinig more important than teaching young minds, and it should be more valued in society than it is. This is one of the things I love so much about Jake (besides being the most beautiful man in the world IMHO ;) ) and the Gyllenhaals, the fact that they show concern for and awareness of what is going on in the world, and give back when they can. Even when Jake was at his youngest, he was getting involved. His family raised him right, I think. :) I don't mind contradictions either, it can show an open and active mind, not one stuck with one unchangeable viewpoint. Movies that have a message are extremely important, but those that entertain have a purpose too. Sometimes, ya get lucky and get a little of both. Seems to be a nice sunny day everywhere today. Enjoy! :)

Hi Nadine :D Rubes will soon be feeling the effects of good wine and good nosh and maybe a cocktail ;D Wish you all could jouin us :)

Hi there BK and welcome! Thanks for commenting - and yes all these little contradictions and enigmas mixed with brains and beauty and soul just add up to make our Jake :D Sigh.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Jake's favorite pud was tiramisu. No?

Yes, Ethan Hawke is multi-talented, writing novels ("Ash Wednesday," "The Hottest State")acting in movies (37 so far, with 7more in various stages of completion), writing screenplays
("Hottest state," "Before sunset"),
directing films ("Hottest state," and two others), performing songs (5 songs for the soundtrack of "Reality bites"), and co-founder/director of a nonprofit theater company in NYC.

Ruby said...

Hi everyone. (((nadine))) don't worry honey all is cool *-)

I am educating WDW in Ethan Hawke. I can't believe she hasn't seen Before Sunset!

She says she's happy right now. Eating garlic doughballs and drinking something red.

Anonymous said...

And Before Sunrise! -

Ruby said...

I have both in a box-set Pia, so I will loan them to her. :-)

I love a contradictory Jake too :) I remember he talks to people, does interviews all the time, how can he remember all the things he said? *winks*

OMG, you HAVE to watch "Before Sunrise" and "Before Sunset". In fact, I can't believe you haven't!!! The last great Generation X romance movies.

Hey there everyone! Got home after a great night Jaking with Ruby with that one essential piece of Jaking kit - The Cosmopolitan :D

Hi Paul :D Yiramisu is a great pud but when he's in Blighty he has to have a Blighty pud. Thanks for the info on Ethan Hawke - Ruby's been filling me in on these all evening :)

Hey Rubes! No need to reply to you as I was with you when you posted ;) I think we should have had a Chocolate Glory and gone without the Garlic Doughballs...

Hi Pia!

Hey there Winterbird :D Ruby is going to lend me these movies. I've heard so much about them.

G'night all - and a day off tomorrow!

Honeys I don't think Jake's eating tiramusu pud nor garlic doughballs nor even snacking on toll house chocolate chip cookies - keepin' fit is a full time occupation, esp. when your career depends upon it.

I guess you Brits are sleeping, but Im enjoying my Aussie shiraz and haha oven roasted snap pea pods, and loving that we are all lookin' after WDW by assuring she sees the right films.

Ive got Rufus doin' Judy Garland on my next Netflix delivery. Is Rufus On Topic? (he's been on my s list since he said stupid things about death of Heath. . . .)

I wish you guys would not go to bed when those of us across the pond are having our suppers!

just sayin'

also: I LOVE to come home to Jake after a long day. the VF portrait on my fridge never fails to deliver!

cheers

If the New Eyes vid was filmed the same time he was on sticks it's a good thing he wasn't doing a tapdance charity!

As always a great post. You're very good at rare finds, m'lady.

What do ya know, Ethan Hawke got married today. Guess he wanted an easy way to remember his anniversary - the day he was featured in WDW.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good morning everyone :D Lazy Jaking day for me I'm happy to say!

Hi there Pia - sorry to miss you while I was sleeping off an inordinate amount of wine and cocktails. Fortunately, unlike Jake, I'm able to indulge at the mo! And it's strange thinking Jake is now on British time too :D

I rely on you to introduce me to the right films - I just never find out otherwise and don't see out of my bubble.

Rufus is on topic as I love 'im, even though I bought his Judy Garland CD and I hated every bit of it...

Welcome Robin's Nest! And thank you :D OMG that is such a coincidence with Ethan! All the best to you and lady, Ethan :D

Have a good day everyone - the weekend is almost upon us...

Morning WDW... weather forecast for next week looks to be good.

I hearted Ethan Hawke before.. but that's when he was in "Dead Poets Society" :P Congrats to him anyway.

Hubby surprised me this morning by getting two tickets for a very late night screening (23:30) for TDK at IMAX... I wonder if he would do the same thing when PoP comes out.

Actually wouldn't it be great if they show PoP in IMAX? Biggest screen in UK - biggest Jake on screen! lol.

have a good day.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Winterbird :D The sun is shining here already! Your hubby has done good, that will be amazing. The thought of Jake on an IMAX screen is beyond words and I might not survive it...

Hope you're having a good day :D

Hi, Pia

The kind of physical training that Jake is doing is probably on a near-Olympic level, which means burning calories faster than he can restoke. So, high-fat stuff like tiramisu might actually be good for him. In the Arctic, they make "ice cream" from blubber and berries, and they burn it off keeping warm.....

I look at marathoners, and I see people who are thin, thin, thin. They probably eat a lot, though.

Anonymous said...

G'day, sweetpeeps. Hey, Brits, sorta nice, sorta strange, to think of Jake on Greenwich Mean Time. No wonder I slept late today. (yeah? how do you figure that, Pia?)

Paul, I think the so- called "eskimos" are kinda chubby, although blueberries and blubber sounds like my breakfast smoothie.

Have a great Friday, everybody!

I lov, love, love the new pics of Jake with long hair - he looks like he's gone back in time thousands of years. Yay! :)

Anonymous said...

It's just the right length, and not too blunt like some of the videogame character's. Could go maybe a little bit longer? This is fine tho, it compliments him. I can't stop looking at him. He's beautiful. Sorry to gush, but it's amazing to see him transform into the Prince right before our eyes. :)

Yes, the sun also rises: but this! ! ! ITA, BK!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everybody! OMG the new pics.... just stunning. Put a new post up and now I may pass out.

Hi Paul - I do hope Jake isn't having to eat blubber icecream to keep the calorie intake up... :D

Morning Pia! Glad you're getting a European bodyclock!

Hey BK :D How much do I love this new Jake look? No words to say - gobsmacking! It is great to see jake become the prince before our eyes and he is simply stunning. I'm going to have to look again - I'm too mushy to make any sense. Gotta gush :D
