'Kissing Jake Gyllenhaal was great!' National Kissing Day and Cosmo readers vote to kiss Jake

It's National Kissing Day and, not at all surprisingly, the sensible readers of Cosmopolitan have voted Jake Gyllenhaal as one of the men they would most like to kiss. This is particularly pleasing to hear because I have always credited Cosmo readers with knowing a thing or two about kissing and recognising a good kisser when they see one. If ever there's an excuse for digging out my kissing Jake catalogue, this is it. So here, in no particular order, is kissing Jake....

As for Jake, kissing Jennifer Aniston certainly seems to have been a memorable event. When 17 asked Jake if she was a good kisser, he just said 'Uh-huh! uh-huh!'

Just after Anne Hathaway finished filming Brokeback, she recalled how her friends reacted to knowing she was to kiss Jake (although she does stress that this interest in Jake was due to him being so intelligent and well-read): '[Excited] Kissing Jake Gyllenhaal was great! I’ve had all good experiences when it comes to on-screen kisses. I’ve had a really good legacy of on-screen kisses. They’ve all been wonderful! Who was the best kisser of all? I don’t have to answer this… [Thinks for a second] But it was definitely Hugh Dancy, my co-star in Ella Enchanted!'

Q: Did you hang out with Jake much after the cameras stopped rolling? 'Well, we hung out together with other people. Jake and I never really hung out one-on-one, but we’d go out in groups of people. The thing that is great about Jake is he’s really, really intelligent so he’s really fun to talk to.' Q: Were your mates really jealous of you? '[Excited] Oh my god! Both guys and girls alike were so jealous when they found out. A lot of my friends are people who I met at college and so they recognise that he’s a really smart guy – and that’s something that gets them very excited.'

Q: Can you tell us a secret about him? 'Ooh, what do I know? I can tell you that he’s such a funny joke-teller. Oh, and he does accents better than anyone I’ve ever met.' Q: What’s his best impression? A gay man ordering a drink. Trust me, it’s hilarious!' The mind boggles.

Heath himself said: 'Look, I totally understand why this is an issue, why people are interested in me and Jake kissing. It is just interesting, because it is. And do you know what? On set we couldn't have been more 'whatever' about it. We had to represent the characters' intense passion and to a certain extent that means you have to get passionate about it. Fuck it. What we're talking about is kissing another human being. There are, like, millions of worse things that I can think of doing in my life than kissing Jake.' I can think of a lot more than that.

Kissing Jake is no doubt a tough act to follow and when Sienna Miller acted opposite Heath Ledger in Casanova, she said, "He told me about kissing Jake, so if he thinks that was better I'm in trouble!"

But not always does the kiss get the desired response:

Hi, WDW!!! Hope you are very well. About that last picture in this thread? I just wanted to slap the crap out of Gwynnie. ;)

is it Jennifer Aniston who said Jake is a great kisser or the other around? who wouldn't want to kiss Jake? Guys, girls, even random dogs on the street!

oh my... that pic of Jake kissing Ang Lee's cheek never fails to crack me up :P

Go Roger Go! I hope the rain brings him luck again :)

(sorry TL and other Nadal fans)

Hey, good to see you Bobbyanna :D Oh blimey - the tennis... I have grey hairs. Now rained off again so settling down with a murder mystery :)

Glad you liked the post, it was a lot of fun to do, a lot of fun! I love to see Jake kissing in the movies - that Donnie Darko kiss is fun. And you and me both with Gwynnie - ungrateful madam ;D

Hi Winterbird! That was Jake saying Jen was a good kisser :) And yes not wanting to kiss Jake should be seen as a medical condition...

Love the pic of tipsy Jake kissing Ang :D

Hey, what a lovely and funny post, WDW! Great to see all those Jake kissing pictures at once!!!

I loooove to see him kissing... ;D

And I like what Anne had to say! It's always good to read a confirmation of what you think Jake is like... :)

And LOL at your comment to the last pic!!!

Hope everybody had a great weekend!

OMG - I am now in need of a kiss from Jake to revive me from the tennis! What a match - and well done Rafa :D

Hi nervous Nadine :D

Hey Uli :D It is good to see so many Jake kisses. And I did enjoy Anne's words - Jake must be such a laugh in the pub. Hope you've had a good weekend too :)

oooh, Jake smoochies! Cute post WDW :D

Wow,what an unbelievable match! Roger was gracious in defeat and Rafa modest and magnanimous in victory, the epitome of sportsmanship both of them. Yes,I wanted Rafa to win, but I have to feel a pang or two of sympathy for Federer that he didn't set a new record. What an adrenaline-fest that was.

And talking of something to set your heart racing, kissing Jake must be right up there! No wonder those who've been blessed in this way are the envy of we mere mortals, of either gender, who have not brushed the Gyllen-lips with our own ;-)

Ann is such a sweetie isn't she and I agree with comments in the last post that she didn't receive the acclaim she deserved for her brilliant performance as Lureen Twist.

As for their "Brokeback" kisses, for true passion and tenderness,I don't think Jake and Heath will ever be surpassed.

Maybe some of his impressions are not in the best of taste but I'm not surprised Jake's a natural mimic - and he has such a great talent for self-mockery too, doesn't he?

Hi all :D Been calming down after the tennis with Top Gear. What a day.

Hi anon - it isn't PC but it could well be one of those 'you had to be there moments'. I doubt Jake meant any harm by it and Anne knows what's what. Glad you enjoyed the tennis :D

Hi Pia!

Hey Rubes :D Smooching Jake, sigh...

hi Drained Nadine - quite a day. I thought the end of the match was very emotional but I did want Roger to get the record. Jake does get my heart racing and I've enjoyed putting together this collection of kisses - like the 'Gyllenlips' - yes please :)

G'night all, listening to the rain coming down.

Ben Kingsley speaks of himself as being an amazing natural mimic - I hear he's difficult, as a person, but I hope Sir Ben and Jake have a conversation about their mutual gifts in this respect.

Although sometimes I think what is said "on-set" needs to stay on-set. Not likely, though, these days.

everyone including Jake needs to be called on racist, homophobic, sexist, etc., jokes. I hate Jake being treated like a saint rather than a human being. I think it's important not to deny how dicey the subject matter of BBMt was for many involved.

and still is.

just sayin'

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia :) Jake very definitely isn't a saint, thank heavens, and so he can say and do things, as we all do, that are questionable. But so much is out of context. The only context we do have about this is that it was during the filming or promotion of BBM and we do know how much heart Jake put into that.

Night :D

What a match!!! I'm happy Rafa won, I think now many people will start taking him more seriously and not just as a claycourter...

Anyway, this was a great entry!

Hello WDW, what a lovely post. Brightened up this wet, grey Sunday.
Like you, I don't know what Gwyneth's problem is! Jake in Proof is gorgeous, but Gwyneth just got on my nerves for the whole film (but that's just me LOL).
And of course drunk!Jake smooching Ang is priceless!
Off topic... sort of, at last I've watched the Rendition DVD and I LOVED it! All the extras (incl. the deleted scenes) were excellent, and Gavin Hood's commentary was one of the best director's commentaries I've listened to, informative and unassuming at the same time.

Lovely post, WDW :) Love that quote from our dear Heath, about there being a million worse things than kissing Jake :D I'm sure I don't need to say which is my favourite out of all of those kisses;)

As for the PC-ness (if that's a word?) or not of Jake's on-set impressions, I would feel uncomfortable about it if it had been anyone but Anne Hathaway relating that anecdote. Anne is very outspoken on things like gay rights, and I'm sure if she thought there was even a hint of homophobia in Jake's joking she would have called him on it.

And I have to say a huge Yaaaaaay!!!! for Rafa today:D Blimey, what a game! I was exhausted just watching it, so I can't imagine what the players must have gone through. My nails were short enough to begin with, but they're practically non existent now! But just so happy for Rafa, he totally deserved it :)
I was hoping we might have caught a glimpse of Jake in the crowd. I thought he was a tennis fan as he was at the US Open so I thought he might have gone along today :(

Anonymous said...

Maybe he was there and the cameras didn't catch him. After all, they were more than happy to show Gwen Steffani every two seconds, but she was in the Federer box after all LOL

Anonymous said...

Love Rafa!!! Sorry for Roger, but still...

Funny you should mention the DD kisses, WDW. That first one outside school? That split second when they started to kiss, then he grabbed her and pulled her closer. For some reason, I don't think that was part of the original "choreography." At least I'd like to think it was something Jake "thought of" (!) on impulse. It worked and looked very natural.
It always reminds me of what Donnie said about the smurfs. ;)

(Dougals Freeman really does it for me. sigh.)

Morning everyone :D And the weather is appalling - And my car is leaking and needs to be bailed out :(

Thanks for all the comments!

Hi Jazz-Girl :D - I feel like we saw more of Gwen in the match than Roger or Rafa!

Hi Paola :D I'm so glad you enjoyed the Rendition DVD :D I can't believe it but I still haven't watched it with Gavin's commentary. I must make a point of doing that.

Morning TL :D Hope you're enjoying the Spanish victory! How's the head? I agree about Anne.

Hey Bobbyanna :D I loved the kisses in DDarko, they look so natural and youthful - sigh. Ahhh, Douglas - now those kisses....

Have a great day everyone and stay dry :)

Xenia said...

Morning everyone! :)

Ah WDW, of all the great posts this is absolutely the greatest!
Kissing Jakes and Jake kissings mmmm. Me like. All of them.;)

Oh and Gwinie is not my favourite actress but in that scene she's crying because feelings (good feelings ahem) are overwhelming her not by complaint IMO!:)

Finally, I think that you can make fun of someone even without making a fool of him/her...in fact gay people are great at making jokes about themselves, so...that said Jake is definitely not a saint and he can happen to tell a bad joke sometimes...Our Prime Minister does it all the time :).

Have a great day!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Xenia! So glad you liked the post so much - but then it's difficult to wrong with snogging smooching Jake :D I wonder if Jake is one of those people who can remember jokes... I never can.

Have a lovely day :D

Hey WDW!

Thank god for National Kissing Day! LOL - as if we need any excuses to gaze upon these lovely images.

I too loved the quote from Heath, and the BBM kiss pics *sigh*. Actually the DD kiss is also one of my favorites.

Say, can y'all send some of your rain this way? We've been parched since our return.. :-(

Have a good one.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Monica! Great to see you in Oxford and good to see you here :D And you are so welcome to some of our rain, please, have it all.... We've got thunder and lightning now just to finish off the work day nicely. Do say hello to the hubby for me.

I do love the DDarko kisses - sigh...

Not having heard the joke in question, I'm reluctant to rush to judgment. Besides, it might be a question about being selective about your audience. Jake isn't likely to tell jokes if he thinks the people hearing them will be offended.

I cringe whenever I think of the blackface scenes in "Babes on Broadway." I think pretty much *everyone* these days is uncomfortable watching such old movies. There's a scene in "The Savages" where that happens....

There's an old children's program that used to make fun of a fat comedian for being fat.

I didn't mean to ramble like this. Ask five people if they think a joke is funny, and you might get six different answers.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! I'm an easy target myself as I'm so flippin gullible. But yes, I think bar jokes are usually tailored for their audience and are related to the amount of tequilas knocked back.

Someone tell it to stop raining.... :( I'm going to need a bucket to bail out my car at this rate.

Hiya

Jake kissing...yes please!! Good on the Cosmo readers for knowing what's what in a good kiss! ;p

I am with you TL, WDW and Paul. Considering who Annie is and that her brother is gay and how gay supportive she and Jake have been I give the benefit of the doubt that Jake was not being offensive. No he is not perfect, and I prefer him that way, but having not been there, etc, etc. I reserve the right to make judgements.

I echo all the "Wow's" and say what an amazing match between Roger and Rafa. Both stunning but Rafa really pulled it out and won graciously as Roger was gracious in defeat.

Sorry it is raining in the UK. Doing a rain go away dance for you know. ;)

Anonymous said...

I think Jake might have been joking around more about his long, "girly" locks, then about some gay stereotype. WHatever the case, I have several gay friends who regularly make fun of/joke about being effeminate. They are amused that so many people in the general population are so limited that their only concept of being gay is associated with effeminate behavior. I'm certain, whatever Jake was doing, he was not being offensive.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real! Your rain dance worked - thanks - it's now stopped raining :D I'm expecting some great kisses from Jake in Prince of Persia :) When he's not battling sand monsters, or riding horses, I want him kissig princesses :D

Hi Anon - I agree, I don't think Jake was being offensive.

Hope everyone's having a good day!

Anonymous said...

They are amused that so many people in the general population are so limited that their only concept of being gay is associated with effeminate behavior.

The only problem with this reasoning is it fails to recognize that that is typically what is made fun of; just look at the portrayals in movies and advertisements for example, frat boy humor, and the seemingly endless lame BBM jokes, which are still going on I might add. Maybe this is why so many have what you describe as a "limited concept". So-called masculine (I have no idea why we label) gays don't fall under this stereotype, behaving as society would deem "acceptable"; and hence would not be made fun of, now would they. This is the prevailing stereotype that is ridiculed, unfortunately, and why people would make the assumption. Let's not kid ourselves; doing an "impression" comes with mannerisms and affectations. There are those in the "general population" who are only too aware of this; so how can you generalize about what people may or may not think Anon. Unless you were there at when the joke was made, you have no idea in what context it was made. I do agree that Anne's having relayed the scenario in an interview makes it a little less likely to have been done as intentionally offensive. Poor judgement perhaps, maybe from knocking back a few as WDW said.

Anonymous said...

well, we do know the "context" of Jake's "hilarious" imitation of a gay man ordering a drink at a bar. The context was the filming of(according to Annie P) "a story of destructive rural homophobia".

That all concerned were supportive of gay rights and closely associated with gay community in family, commuity, and friends, doesnt mean that it isnt human and natural to blow off anxieties privately, often in inappropriate ways. I sure have done so myself.

Members of a minority can get away with self-mockery -

Guess Im the cheese that stands alone in feeling this reported skit and Anne's response, are not "harmless".

just sayin'

Anonymous said...

I posted before reading Anon 18:32 bringing up relevant issue of effeminate stereotypes.

Anonymous said...

No, you're not alone Pia - I'm not crazy about it either, especially the timing, around or after the filming of BBM. I realize people are human tho, and don't expect miracles from them (all the time). But perpetuating that kind of humor does nothing to change the "limited concepts of the general population". Sorry for the diatribe!

Hi Pias and anons - and anons and Pias! I'm slightly confused as to who is who and what is what but I do welcome the discussion and that is the main thing :D I kinda disagree with some and kinda agree with others and I'm having a lovely bottle of red :)

paulh said...

Monty Python used to operate on the assumption that offending *everyone* was tantamount to offending no one. Part of the reason why some fat people and some gay people feel hurt by jokes aimed at them is that there are so many other groups that rarely get mined for humor. Joan Rivers made it a point to make fun of the high-born and wealthy, to the extent that Britain's Royal Family were deeply hurt by some of the jokes Joan made about them.

So, who is it all right to make jokes about, and who isn't all right?

I'm not going to lie when I saw the prince of persia, with my husband, I started to have a little crush on Jake Gyllenhaal lol. I've kept it a secret though so we can still watch movies with him it them. I've learned not to say anything after I told my husband that I thought Gerard Butler was sexy. Unfortunately I haven't seen a movie with Gerard Butler in it since.
