WDW's report from The Dark Knight European Premiere - London remembers Heath

What a day - and, the day after, all the bruises, aches, pains and fatigue feel well worth it - Premiere Syndrome. All day as you're crammed into a space that is so small that you literally cannot retrieve a thing from the bag wedged between your ankles without everyone around you bracing themselves and each other to avoid collapsing like a coil of dominoes, you think you won't do this again. And then, after 6 hours, 8 hours or longer, you watch the carpet going down, you play games with some of the security and other attendants, the special effects are tested and you hear the noise of the Batmobile revving somewhere outside the Square and you know you'd do it again.

The security was a mess and we were manhandled into an unmarked area where the barricades would go. Because it was unmarked, many people who'd been there since breakfast time were left without a place and ended up behind huge screens and the press, with no chance of seeing a thing. Apparently, the security guy responsible is known for his unpleasant crowd control at London's premieres and has a reputation, preserved on YouTube apparently, that he feel he must maintain. So I got separated from the others and was wedged in, fortunately in a place with a great view right opposite the Odeon entrance, to the right of the press and just where the interviews took place. I was luckily attached to a group of Harry Potter fans who kept me well entertained and fed with chocolates.

We talked about Heath Ledger a lot. I wore my green stripes with pride and one of the HP girls wore a Heath t-shirt. They had planned, a year ago, to be here to see Heath. We'd done just the same thing. The sense of someone massive and important and loved being missing was extremely palpable and made the whole affair emotional and I think it affected the mood on and off the red carpet.

The interviewer rehearsed to camera and did a rolecall for those attending and said Maggie Gyllenhaal but with a hard G. I wasn't having that! So I yelled out 'That's Jill-enhaal, not Gill-enhaal!' And he got it right for the rest of the evening.

One thing I couldn't believe was that right up until the barriers went up, people, especially tourists, were asking us why we were there! This was despite huge lettering on the Odeon saying The Dark Knight European premiere, the fire special effects, the sound of bats and the huge posters around us and the security - 'Are you waiting for a film?' In a manner of speaking.

At last they got the carpet down - red with a black bat. We heard it before we saw it - the Batmobile came down the carpet, fire shooting out of its exhaust and making a sound like you wouldn't believe. Then the audience began to arrive and the HP fans with me were very lucky because there seemed to be a neverending supply of Harry Potter 'kids', including Draco, Luna and Neville.

The girls also pointed out a long line of Hollyoaks actresses and Bob Geldolf daughters in very high heels but at least I had heard of Mcfly. Not surprisingly, Doctor Who's nemesis The Master, John Simm, attracted a lot of attention (as did Kelly Osbourne's new haircut).

Personally, I was pleased to see Gary Lineker but I couldn't get a picture of him as Michael Caine was being interviewed right by us and I was trying to avoid having my eye poked out by TDK pictures which were being shoved past me for Sir Michael's autograph.

We'd been told by a guy there that Gary Oldman was a no and there was a 'question mark over Morgan Freeman' - neither of whom turned up. Michael Caine was the first to arrive but he took such a great amount of time signing autographs (while being shadowed by the bodyguard from Jake and Reese's Paris weekend!), Aaron Eckhart was the first of the cast we saw and Christian Bale was the last.

Finally I could see Maggie a little down the carpet, signing away, with Peter Sarsgaard keeping a little distance, towards the centre of the carpet. She looked gorgeous, tall and pale in the flowing black and backless cat suit. She walked past me and headed straight to the press a few feet away to pose. I called her name and she said she'd come back - unfortunately she wasn't able to as everyone was being called into the theatre. Ruby remembers that someone called out 'Maggie, your brother is hot!' No argument there...

After everyone was in we were hoping that the cast would appear on the balcony but they didn't. Instead after doing some photographs inside the foyer and after quickly popping into the auditorium, they were out. Big silver cars parked on the red carpet outside and they were out like a shot, Maggie waving as she got into the car. Helsbells got some pictures of Peter at this point, and also got some other pictures of Maggie - and here they are (thanks Helen!)

Finally, at about 7.30, it was all over and we were released from our pen. We headed automatically to the bar across Leicester Square and I downed a pint of Peroni in one. We all toasted Heath.

I must thank Ruby, Anouska, Winterbird, Helsbells and Freetraveller for sharing the day, although for some of that day communication could only take place through shouts and wild arm gestures. (In this blurred picture below, you can see Peter to the right of Maggie in the background - I did call his name and he looked over but this was very much Maggie's night and he went nowhere near the barriers and crowds - Edited to add, I see from a YouTube video that Peter did sign further away from the Odeon.)

This YouTube video, shot just a couple of feet from where I was standing, gives some idea of what the whole affair was like. Seeing other YouTube videos of the event makes me appreciate just how close I was and how lucky I was. I also see from one of them that it looks like Christian Bale was attended at one point by our old favourite 'Officer K', Jake's other BG!

Prince of Persia begins filming today and Jerry 'finally got' Jake!

Jerry Bruckheimer has been talking about the Prince of Persia: 'The trademark feature of all the games is the playable character's jumping across a gap and grabbing a ledge with his hands to pull himself up. Will fans see that signature move in the movie? "Well, we'll try," Bruckheimer said... "We're starting Prince of Persia on Tuesday [July 22]," Bruckheimer said. "We're prepping all the locations right now. The actors are rehearsing. It's very close. I leave tomorrow to go up there."... Bruckheimer shared his excitement for making a movie with Gyllenhaal, who has been on the producer's radar for a long time. "I've always wanted to work with him," Bruckheimer said. "I've been chasing him for a while, so I finally got him, finally found something he liked."'

Thanks for the great post, WDW!

Did you manage to actually see the movie? ;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Paul! The movie's not out here until the end of the week so no! The premiere seemed to be attended by actors from Harry Potter, Hollyoaks, IT people (who I don't recognise), extras from TDK, the offspring of Geldof and Osbournes, and girls in very short dresses and very high heels, footballers and singers and boybands - forgot to mention Duncan James in the post (people next to me yelled at him 'Get a job!').

So still some time to go before I get to see it - probably Saturday. But at least I got to see the man who wears the cape! Changed a bit since I last saw him as a boy filming Empire of the Sun.

Great post, WDW. I found it quite interesting -- telling, perhaps -- that Maggie was the only one who smiled while doing the autograph thing.

Hey guys! you might want to vote for Jake:

Hi Beckela :D Maggie was so great - she looked a little daunted by the size of the crowd but she spent a long time on the carpet. But must say that Aaron was a gem too - he smiled away. Michael Caine was just an institution :D But blimey, reading about the trouble Christian Bale may have got himself into, I'm not surprised he looked pale and glum!

But Maggie and Aaron were my favourites :D

Thanks Jazzy :D

I hate to admit it, but my goodness, Aaron Eckhart is hot!

Christian Bale was arrested! I don't believe it! Police said they waited until after he got thru the premiere.

I think sometimes bodyguards aren't only to protect someone from others, but to protect them from themselves, from doing embarrassing things... except it would be hard to protect you from your own mother!

Thanks WDW, great report... we have been all saying we can just read your report afterwards while we were hanging about at the back and gossiping :P

Sorry that I had to rush back home and couldn't say goodbye properly to everyone. But my back hurt big time, I think when I jumped onto the cab, I was almost dead. I am too old for this - well I bet if Jake was there, that would have made a big difference :P But the truth is, I wanted to be there, cos like the HP fans, i wanted to see Heath in the TDK premiere since i got the news he's playing Joker.

So the back pain is for Heath. And it's well worth it.

I got a glimpse of Aaron Eckhart, he looks dashing, we were saying his haircut reminds us of Jake in Zodiac - the good boy haircut.

I also saw Maggie a bit, she's stunning.

I bet you are better than us already, WDW... we couldn't recognise anyone that's not in TDK. But the crowd kept informing/enlighten us who's who etc. And yeah, the whole cast of Hollyoaks (like I know!?!), the HP cast etc.

I missed Peter though :( We were planning to go all hysterical for him! :P

it's been fun... just wish someone was there *sighs*

*go read the Jerry B bit now*

The interviewer rehearsed to camera and did a rolecall for those attending and said Maggie Gyllenhaal but with a hard G.

I had to smile when I read this. I was watching one on TV this weekend and they did the same thing with Maggie's name in an interview , so I said to the TV "It's Jill-en-hall", just as you all did! :)

It sounds like the premiere was well worth the waiting and crushing crowds? You're such a trooper when it comes to these things, WDW. :) I'm going to see TDK again this weekend, Heath was utterly amazing, Maggie and Aaron romantic (I'm think I'm kinda in love with him now, but I knew I'd love the character, I've always felt something for Harvey Dent/Two Face), Christian Bale, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Michael Caine.

Glad to hear PoP is getting underway, that promises to be so exciting as well.

Glad you all enjoyed the premiere.

Hello WDW, what a great afternoon we shared! Tiring, but nice kind of tiring, if it was not for the less than impressive organisation and "crowd control"...
Maggie looked fab, but the men did too LOL! And Michael Caine is aging really well. Shame for Gary Oldman's absence, I'd have loved to see him. He's one of my favourite actors.

Toasting to Heath was the highlight of the day. Although, it didn't take away the pain of not seeing him there. Can you imagine how wild the crowd would have gone?!?

Thanks for the brilliant and lively report!

Cheers
Paola :)

Thanks for the absolutely fantastic report and photos! Sorry you all were squeezed in but it sounds like a really great event. :) Maggie did look fabulous and I was surprised to hear of the issues with Christian Bale. Hope they get sorted out. :/ Sorry Gary O. wasn't there but Aaron, Peter, Christian and Michael did very nicely for the men. ;)

Very cool news that Jerry B. wanted to work with Jake. Btw, get ready....wait for it....Jake will be doing a British accent in PoP!!!

Anonymous said...

Here is the specific info from the aricle on the voice coach he is using. Sounds pretty good.

Her glittering cast of former students include Gwyneth Paltrow, whom she trained for Emma and Shakespeare in Love, and Renee Zellweger for Bridget Jones's Diary and Miss Potter.

Paltrow won an Oscar for Shakespeare in Love and Zellweger was nominated as Bridget Jones, but probably the greater tributes to their English accents were the nominations from an obviously impressed British Academy - they sounded the part.
Berkery has also coached Brad Pitt (Seven Years in Tibet), Jim Carrey (A Christmas Carol, due out next year) and Geoffrey Rush (Pirates of the Caribbean), and is currently working with Jake Gyllenhaal on his English accent for Prince of Persia.

Hi there everyone - resting now with tea and icecream. Hot day out there.

Hi Anon! Yep, it's official, Aaron Eckhart is bloody gorgeous and just as gorgeous in the flesh (a little shorter than I thought him perhaps, but being wedged against a barricade does alter one's perceptions). I remember seeing him in Posession with Gwyneth Paltrow (Aaron was better than Gwynnie) as this had been one of my favourite novels, and I even liked him in The Core :D

It is a lot of fun to see such famous movie stars - I would have loved to have seen Heath...

I just can't believe it about Christian! And at the Dorchester of all places.... (I can vouch for their Cosmopolitans and afternoon teas). But what a contrast - premiere to police station.

Hey! Great to see some of my fellow carpeteers :D Hi Winterbird - I'm sorry I couldn't say goodbye to you. Helen and I got trapped by police when the cavalcade was leaving the Odeon and apparently letting Christian, Maggie et al out was more important than letting Helen and me out :(

My back is seriously killing. But at least it was warm and dry yesterday. But yeah the pains are well worth it.

I didn't have a clue who some of the peope were there and I was laughing at the HP fans near me knowing all their names. I just kept commenting on the practicality of some of the footwear... But I knew Maggie and Peter straight off!

Hi BK! Mr WDW has been calling me a knackered old wreck and he's not far wrong but it was well worth it - if only to correct the interviewer's pronunciation. He did have the grace to smile at me when I yelled at him!

Hey Paola - it was so good to see you again! It was way too short a time afterwards though. Hotels have a real appeal to them for 'next time' (The Dorchester sounds like it can get a little rowdy though...). I missed Gary Oldman too - fortunately one of the behind-the-scenes guys was his spitting image, but he got a bit tired of us teasing him in the end - so then we turned our attention to another of them who looked like Matt Damon. The ways to pass the time... One guy looked so much like Heath as Ennis it was painful to look at him, and one girl got upset by that.

Toasting Heath was such a highlight - I missed him. I did enjoy filling Helen's autograph book too :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Get Real! Posting at the same time :D OMG!!!! I have only one thing to say ..... Nooooooooo!!!! Jake with long flowing locks, not wearing very much, wielding a sword, riding a horse, rescuing and smooching with frisky heroines, being in the sweaty desert AND SPEAKING IN AN ENGLISH ACCENT?! I swear I will keel over. The first time I see it I will need to be in an oxygen tent...

Thanks so much for the link! Made my day that. But will it be any good? It's not easy. And to my ears Peter's sounded rather odd when I talked to him... But Gwyneth was good.

Maybe Peter and Jake can compare accents. It makes sense though because in the games the Prince has a very English accent.

Better get some more icecream to cool off :D

twistedlogic said...

Thanks for this great report and pics, WDW :) I watched some of the TV reports last night but was too busy seeing if I could spot any of you in the background to take much notice of what anyone said. Good for you for correcting that interviewer's pronounciation, btw;)
Just under 48 hours before I get to see TDK for myself :)

Anonymous said...

I want to follow every single development with PoP - the whole idea sounds wondeful. I didn't realize the Prince has an English accent in the games. Jake will really make the Prince come to life then! I liked Gemma's comments about the film and her character too. Maggie just blew me away as Rachel Dawes. I watched Batman Begins before I saw TDK, and I like Maggie's sophisticated and established Assistant DA Rachel. It carries along seamlessly from Katie Holme's Rachel, just startng out in the DA's office. In fact, everyone's roles carried along seamlessly from the first one. It's a fantastic action movie, almost sensory overload seeing it in IMAX, but very exciting. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL :D I've spotted myself so far in the background to one of the press pics, but I've not had time to watch all the videos and see the pics yet. It's also weird watching veryone being interviewed very close but not being able to hear what they said due to the noise. I must find the interview for Michael because I think I was yelling for Maggie during that (sorry to be impolite, Michael!) and also the Maggie interview. I have no idea which programme the interviews were for - I know the interviewer (Mark something) works for C4 but that's it.

If anyone finds them I'd love to know :) There was also a mystery grey-haired gentleman being interviewed for ages and none of us know who he is. I must post his picture so someone can recognise him.

Just 48 hours :) I have to wait til Saturday I think, as I want to be awake for it but there's a chance I can go on Friday.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi BK :D Posting at the same time! I did think it would sound unusual if Jake had a Los Angeles accent in this. But isn't it great to follow all of this!

That sounds amazing seeing TDK at the IMAX. I hope to later in August - it's all pretty booked up in London. I haven't seen Batman Begins - TDK will be my first introduction to Batman :)

'Sensory overload' is a good way to describe all this :)

Anonymous said...

Me again!

As I watching the big screen on Leicester Square, while the red carpet interviews were going on the screen displayed the skymovies.com logo. Perhaps those interviews are available from the sky movies site? (I can't check now, this is one of the sites they block at work)

And...

Quote:
"Berkery (...)is currently working with Jake Gyllenhaal on his English accent for Prince of Persia."

*faints*

Anonymous said...

I can't believe Christian Bale is arrested... :((((((( What's going on??

Oh, and English accent? *faint*

Anonymous said...

Kudos to the Magnificent Six! If I have sensory overload from watching the video, can't imagine how y'all must feel! Amazing to have you guys on the scene!

O gosh did Christian bonk his mom on the head? I dont know how actors deal with attendant family on these high stess occasions - lucky Mag to have Peter standing by so stalwart or that is at least how I imagine him.

Lov'd Maggie's gesture of "I'll be back" - she's gracious as well as gorgeous.

Maggie in her cat outfit - haha! - those who wish Jake was there, would you really want to see him on his hands and knees licking up a plate of milk?

And a wave to Officer K!

O my!

Seeing TDK tomorrow eve.

paulh said...

Jake lapping up milk like a cat? Well, I once enjoyed watching the late Zero Mostel imitate an airplane. Jake could probably make almost anything entertaining. :-)

Anonymous said...

Hey, Paul! You do know the story Jake tells about his first role in a play put on for parents where Maggie made Jake play cat lapping up cream?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paola :D I didn't see the screens so thanks for that - maybe it was all to do with Sky. Let me know if you find the interviews. I just emailed you the picture of us all :) Jake with an English accent *sigh*

Hi Ania :D The Christian Bale thing just feels surreal. I'm glad I didn't know that when I was there. The English accent news is great!

Hey there Pia :D Maggie is definitely onto a good thing having Peter standing close by and vice versa - Peter is so cool, I don't know how best to describe him :)

I do agree that these occasions must be emtionally very taxing for everyone - I know we were worn out - and it does make one wonder how best one should get through all this.

So good to see Officer K again! I like the Maginificent Six - thanks for that :D

Hi Paul :)

There's obviously more then meets the eye on the matter of Christian Bale. He voluntarily went to the police the next day and was totally cooperative. No charges have been brought and he is not arrested, as far as I know. A poster on justjared said there was an argument outside his room and he closed the door on them and wouldn't let them in, and they were upset with him. Reports are they were also intoxicated. Sounds like Christian has "one of those families." I am a huge fan of him, so I will pass no judgement of him ever.

Ruby said...

WDW, you got some great pics, well done. I'm so weary now. And a little blue. But it was great to be there with our friends.

I want a new car, guess what I've got my eye on. :D

I hope Christian sorts things out. He seems like a good guy. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

HI Anon :) I do hope this gets sorted out soon. It sounds like it was one of those emotional nights. I'm a fan of Christian and so I'm gonna think the best :D

Hey Rubes :D It was good to spend at least some of yesterday with you. It was so emotional. I'll fight you for the car :D

Sara Andrea Vera said...

Hello!!!
An slightly OT question here. Does anyone know how do you pronounce "Gyllenhaal" in Swedish?
Just curious.

Thanks for all the amazing info.

ANDREA

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Andrea and welcome :D I don't know the answer to your question myself, I'd always thought it was the same way. Thanks for commenting!

Ruby said...

According to my Swedish friend, it is a little different, but I wouldn't even try to explain how in writing. :D

Anonymous said...

Wasn't it something like Yullanhaal? :D

Hey guys - exhausted today and achy breaky about Heath. But it was lovely to see Maggie. I am v. annoyed about missing Peter by one minute because my glass of Viognier was more important :)

WDW, that was a perfect account. The security guy well deserves his reputation :D

Very excited about Jake with an English accent. I reckon he must have tried it out at audition - let's hope it's not the Gooberballs one, eh?

Hugs to all carpeteers. I'm never doing it again. Until the next time.

Ruby said...

I'm never doing it again either. Except for PoP. :)

paulh said...

Yes, WDW, Peter Sarsgaard is very very cool. His coolness is a well-kept secret, but we have figured it out. ;-)

Yes, Pia, I know the story about Jake pretending to be a cat in his sister's play. Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Cats" has not officially been made into a movie yet ("6 degrees of separation" to the contrary ;-) ), so there's always a chance Jake could be in the screen version of it. :-)

(But then, I'm such a T S Eliot fan.... With Eliot's fantastic poetry as a guide, how could Webber not create a masterpiece of a musical?)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks, Ruby, next time we've had a few I'll ask you to have a go :D

Hi Nouskie :D It's always the way with these things, you just never know what's happening around the corner. I was 'fortunately' pinned to the front of the crowd by 3 Harry Potter fans, 1 paparazzi, 1 professional autograph hunter (about 7 foot tall) and a Scot. Me exhausted and achy too - in bones and in heart.

I'm sure we can come up with some tips if any help is required to coach Jake in an English accent :)

Problem with red carpets is just a few hours afterwards I forget how hard they are, until the next time...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

A big exception for PoP, Rubes :D How about Brothers??

Hi Paul :) I think Peter may be the coollest guy about. I'm seriously hoping Jake is never in a movie version of Cats :D

Ruby said...

Brothers will be smaller event, I'm thinking. LFF maybe. I may be wrong, but I don't think that will anywhere near as well attended. Therefore more manageable. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

True enough, Ruby. Just as well as Brothers is out at the completely wrong time of year for Red carpetting :/

Anonymous said...

It'll be a different deal completely. I can feel my carpet muscles tensing again already :p

Anonymous said...

Anouska! Carpet muscles! OMG! A new erotic vocabulary! Don't stop now! :D :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I've been spending the evening watching Aaron and Gwyn in Possession. I love it :)

Excervise those carpet muscles, Anouska! Mine have taken a batterig but they'll be ready to go again.

I wonder if these stars actually think about what it's like to be on the other side of the barrier. I remember feeling very put out at the Baftas hearing Toni Collette say how cold she was bcause she'd been standing around in the cold for 15 minutes!

Hey Pia :D We could have done with you on the long wait - lots of word games going on to entertain us. The HP girls and I did try to do I Spy but all the answers were B for Batman, J for Joker or P for people... I could see Anouska and the others in the distance chatting away :) Before PoP we should come up with a guide to ed Carpet games.

Uli said...

Big hugs to the carpet crowd!!!
I can imagine that it must have been exciting but oh so sad at the same time... Although knowing the truth for months, but not understanding it, I could imagine that it hit you hard today...

What a pity that you got seperated...

Thanks for the great report, WDW!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Uli! Bih hugs back :) Gotta hit hard today as it's six months, TDK is out and Heath has still not come back. But it felt important to be there.

I also wanted to be there for Maggie. I am so proud of her being part of the biggest movie ever :D

At least we all found each other in the bar!

helsbells said...

Hello! Finally I'm here!

Just wanted to say thank you to all you lovely ladies for making standing around for hours seem like fun!

Glad the photo's worked ok, shame they're not better quality but at least they're visible.

Can't wait for PoP.......

Still laughing at my autograph book.....

Hugs! x

Really appreciate how Christian Bale has been speaking out regarding Heath's professionalism as an actor and finding the comments of those who confuse his dark role in TDK with his personal life "rude" -

Good morning everyone! back at work, sigh, still feeling every muscle aching.

Good to see you Hels (about flippin time.... ;D) It was great to see you again and thanks for the pics. I'm glad you're enjoying your autographs - the lengths I went to to get Ramona's in there :D I think we can assemble a good group to give Jake some all-round English accent lessons, but no bad words :D

Thank you WDW for the report from the TDK premiere, I'm sure Heath has been missed a lot, it's still so hard to believe he's gone.. I'm so looking forward to seeing the movie, I know his acting will be stunning and fascinating, and I'm so curious to see Maggie too: I've seen her on Letterman's, she's such a sweet and smart young woman!

..and I'm hoping for new pics of a training, tanned, long-haired, absolutely stunning Jake to show up asap ;D

Wish you all a lovely day :)

Hey WDW, this must have been a truly unique experience, the excitment and the sense of lack all in one event.
It's good to know you're back in action and getting ready for all the red carpets to come...;)
Let's just hope there will be one here in Italy we could join in...:D

I'm still recovering from the news about Christian Bale though, let's hope they're not true...

And I agree with Sonia, pics from Morocco would be much appreciated...

It looks like an official teaser with some other guy in Jake's place. I put Jake Gyllenhaal+Prince of Persia on You Tube and this is what I got:

OMG, I've just seen it again. It IS fake, they spelled COMMING wrong. I am sorry. I didn't see it for the first time.

Some people are so impatient to see the movie that they start creating fake trailers knowing that some overexited fans like me will take the bait.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi xenia :D It was an entirely different beast this red carpet. But also without the stress of waiting for Jake to arrive! It'd be great to have another Italy redcarpet that we can do together :)

Hi Zodiac! There is so much stuff out there now combining the future game and future film. At least a lot of imagination goes into it! Shows how much excitement there is out there for it.

Hope everyone's having a good day!

*good girl* said...

I for sure would love to join you Xenia and WDW, on another Italian red carpet!
I'm keeping the Venice Film Festival (27th Aug - 6th Sept)website checked, the movies in competition will be announced in a press conference in Rome by the end of July, so fingers crossed for a Brothers premiere (am I too optimistic? :P), but we might always have hope for the Rome Festival (22-31 Oct) :D
Seeing Jake is addictive, when you've seen him once, you just need to see him as often as you can, and WDW you definitely know what I mean :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Good Girl! Thanks for that - do keep us posted on any decisions for films at Venice :D Can't believe they're all coming up again...

"I'm seriously hoping Jake is never in a movie version of Cats :D" [WDW]

Ouch! Well, chances are there never *will* be such a movie, and the cast will consist of profesisonal dancers, so there's probably not much chance of it.

But.... I can see Jake as Mr. Mistopheles. Nathan Lane could be the St. James cat. As McAvity, I can see Simon Pegg or James McAvoy...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! I like musicals but not ones where people dress up as animals, especially cats and dogs :D Too much like panto for me ;D

Hey WDW and fellow Carpeteers - all for one and one for all. That sort of back-breaking,bladder-bursting day is something I used to do twenty years ago (with bands rather than actors most of the time)but I'm so grateful for your intrepid forays into Premiere-world - you do the foot-slogging so we don't have to! This account gives a very intense flavour of all the hoo-ha and hoopla!

It seems that Heath's absence was a more tangible and poignant entity than anyone's actual presence at this premiere (although Maggie looked delicious, delectable and dignified as usual - that backless catsuit looked fabulous on her!).

Only 19 hours now before I'm due to see "TDK" - I've not been at my best this week so I'd better get my act together for tomorrow afternoon, stripey top at the ready. Can't wait to see Heath's Joker yet I'm dreading it all at the same time :-/

paulh said...

Please don't dread Heath's performance, Nadine. Heath isn't going to be on the screen, but the Joker will be. It's a wonderful performance, scary at times, funny at times. Everyone in the movie is working up to a very high standard. I saw a different movie on Sunday, but the next theater over was showing "Dark Knight." People came pouring out of that theater, all in good spirits.

Morgan Freeman (Lucius Fox) and Maggie Gyllenhaal (Rachel Dawes) carry the moral high ground in the movie. Both of them pay a price for this. I can't say any more, because I don't want to spoil the fun for those who haven't see the movie yet. I saw it opn a regular screen, not an IMAX one, but I've heard that the IMAX version is breathtaking...

Thanks for that Paul :-)Actually,it's not the performance I'm dreading so much, which is by all accounts as masterful as I knew it would be,it's the anticipated emptiness afterwards when seeing Heath's last complete performance is in the past, rather than the future...and a little more of him will slip away.

Don't mind me,just in a melancholy state of mind. Normal service will resume as soon as possible ;-)

Hi Nadine! I'm glad we could do some of the footwork for you, as it was knackering. I've been hobbling today. Heath was there in every sense on Monday except the one that really matters. I hope the film's ok for you - during and after.

Thanks for that Paul - sounds wonderful :D And thanks for not giving anything away as so many of us are about to see it for the first time over the next few days.

I see the film on Friday evening and I have a whole bunch of feelings, especially after Monday.

One final thought about Maggie: Her new hairdo seems to be very becoming. I was trying to remember who it was that Maggie reminded me of, and now I've thought of her: Loretta Young. I don't know if Loretta wroe that particular hairdo (though she might have), it's just that it nicely frames Maggie's forehead and showcases her long face and intelligent eyes.
I hope we see it more in the future.

You are always right in the thick of things!! Thx for always sharing your 1st-hand acct on this wonderful website! My fav part was you correcting the pronunciation of Maggie & J's last name, LOL, way to go! Also the bit about bigwig HW producer J Bruckheimer watching & wanting Jake for a long time....we can all relate to that! XO, Melby dcf

Hi Paul! I love Maggie's haircut. I thought Maggie looked absolutely beautiful when I saw her - taller and with amazing skin, hair and expression. I love this look too.

Thanks so much Melby :D I'm so glad you like the site. I was a bit cheeky with the interviewer but it had to be done. I couldn't bear the thought of Gyllenhaal being pronounced wrongly on Maggie's big day in London. Absolutely loved Jerry's words as well :D Good to see you!
