Behind the scenes and being seen - Nailed, Brokeback, Brothers

When a movie comes to town, you sure know it - diverted traffic, closed businesses, streets lined with tables full of tea, coffee and juice, white trucks and trailers, security, technicians judging the position of the sun and young women wearing headphones telling you to 'shush'. Usually, you stop and watch and, maybe, if you're very lucky, you get a picture taken with one of the movie's stars.

However, when Nailed arrived in Columbia, South Carolina, it was almost as if the whole city came out to help, such were the opportunities to join in. In this article, four residents of Columbia describe what it was like to be involved in Nailed, both behind the scenes and in front of the camera. Whether or not everyone got paid is another matter...

And talking of being involved in a movie, yesterday we were discussing Brokeback Mountain's deleted scenes and how it is universally agreed that the removal of the hippie interlude was a good thing. But, of course, this isn't quite such a good thing if you are one of the hippies who ends up in the recycling. So, I did some searching about and found out that my path may have crossed one of Brokeback's hippie extras.

Alberta girl Kailin See was one of these hippies caught in an overflowing brook and rescued by Jack and Ennis. Although working with Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger is clearly ample reward enough for most of us, especially if that involves being flung over Heath's horse, Kailin didn't make the movie itself. But she later got a named role in Brad Pitt's The Assassination of Jesse James and walked the red carpet for that movie in Toronto last September.

I was standing by that red carpet, along with three quarters of the population of Toronto and every member of press from the northern hemisphere. At one point, I actually saw Brad's hand and the back of Angelina's head. Kailin undoubtedly had the better view. Incidentally, the Jesse James premiere took place at the same theatre (The Elgin & Winter Garden) where Jake walked the red carpet for Brokeback back in 2005. For your amusement, here is my 'best' picture from the Jesse James red carpet scrum. Yes, that is Brad and Angelina in the faint distance to the left... (The absence of Jake on this occasion had removed by 'dive to the front and endure' instincts.)

Back on topic and on the snowy set of Brothers

Although this picture doesn't show Jake - very unfortunately - it does show Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman talking to Jim Sheridan on the set of Brothers back in February. Just look at that snow - a world away from the sand and mountains of Morocco.

Pictures from Natalie Portman, IHJ and (the rubbish ones) WDW.

Hello again!

:O) LOL (O: I'm sorry, I know there's nothing funny in that phrase but my dirty mind just got a very funny (and hot!) mental image :O) LOL
(Anything to cope with Mondays)

I'm off to read the story of the people who worked in Nailed now...

See you later!!

Hi Sara! Good to see you again :D Heehee - I'm glad you got those thoughts in your head - they were in mind when I wrote that :D And yes, it does help to get through Mondays... they do seem to last longer than any other day of the week. Catch you later!

HAha! you guys! being thrown over Heath's horse turns you on? you are as horny as Jake and Heath thinking that "chawing on elk jerkey" is sexy!

just kidding, right?

I LUV behind the scenes info. This was so interesting! Never ceases to amaxe me what goes on behind the curtain where the wizard of oz hides. . .

altnough sometimes, especially when it comes to PR - I just want to go back to Kansas. . .

thanks for this WDW!

Hey there Pia :D What, you mean you wouldn't want to be thrown over the saddle of Heath or Jack?! Can't resist it, sorry :D I love behind the scenes stuff, as you know. Nailed seems to have become part of the community! And then you get films such as PoP out there in Morocco which seem so far away.

As you say - so interesting what goes on behind the curtain - I was never interested in it before Jake but now I'm fascinated. All the PR, I can't make head nor tail of that, so I'll stick with what I see on the screen :D Glad you liked the post. I loved thinking back to Toronto - it was such a laugh at the Brad Pitt premier as we had nothing invested in it and just went for the fun.

Hope everyone's having a good evening :D

Hi, WDW

I love you for finding those articles about the "hippie" and the South Carolinians who get Hollywood jobs without leaving home. Those are great, and very revealing. Massachusetts and Rhode Island seem to be good places for filming too....

Morning everyone - running around this morning...

Hi Pia and thanks so much Paul - I love this type of article too. A whole new world since I became interested in Jake :D

Have a good day!

Well there IS snow in Morocco and skiing and skilifts;
http://lexicorient.com/morocco/oukaimeden.htm and

If I am not mistaken the ski resort Oukaïmeden was once mentioned as one of the shooting places for PoP.

Hey WDW, great post, as always.:)

Wow, a new pic, even if Jake-less, from Brother's set! God bless that NP site and WDW of course.;)

Oh and maybe I'm telling you nothing new, but there're some interesting news from Nailed front.
This has been posted by UV on Gyllenbabble, take a look:
Hollywood Reporter

Have a good day everyone! :)

Hi everybody - hope everyone's having a much better day than me!

Hi Anon! Yes, that's one of the places where PoP is being filmed - the contrast between the summer sun and the winter snow - we don't tend to get those extremes here. Seems a world away :D Thanks for commenting :D

Hi there Xenia. Google kindly sent me that article earlier, it's for the post later - good stuff :D

Hope everyone's having a good day :D

Hiya,

Thanks for more behind the scenes info. Love it all, even the frustrating stuff about ThinkFilms. Here's hoping we do get to see Nailed in 2009. So then we have Brothers in Dec. 2008, Nailed in 2009 and PoP in 2010. That will at least give us some Jake on film each year. :D As always BBM behind the scenes stuff is always appreciated and held dear.

Not sure what PR has to do with any of this info but I take all info we get with a bit of a grain of salt and try not to get caught up in the rest. Some of course seems much more legit than other stuff. I have really limited my time elsewhere because it gets way to frustrating. :/ Thankfully I truly enjoy and spend most of my Jaking time here. :D

Have a great day all.

Good to see you, Get Real :D I'm very glad to hear you enjoy spending your time here - and everyone here makes it such a nice place for me :D

I love all the behinds the scenes stuff, and we really are in such a good position with all these films on the way. I rememebr those times (like last summer) when there was nothing lined up after Rendition.

Maybe the key is for Jake to co-star with Helen Mirren the next time he does a movie for ThinkFilm? ;-) Her movies will get finished and distributed, because money will be found from somewhere...

Jake still hasn't done any TV series. That would give us weekly exposure to him. :-)

Hi everyone! I'm really looking forward to Brothers, I have a feeling it will be great. Though I don't know how long i'll have to wait to see it, since I live in Argentina...
Anyway, Jake is in the most attractive man poll again, I leave you the link to vote ;)

Hi Paul :D Ooh, Jake on TV every week, very nice. I could just see him in a West Wing kind of drama. I do miss that series.

Hey there Jazzy! I do hope you don't have to wait too long before Brothers reaches Argentina. Thanks very much for the link to the vote - I've done my duty - it felt like deja vu. Weren't we voting for Jake in this during the last two summers? But I always like to get the chance to vote for Jake :D

LOL We're always voting for him, aren't we. Let's just hope he makes it to the finals this time.
Anyway, I know that POP will be released at the same time as in the US, that's what always happens with big movies, but we usually have to wait a couple of months with the rest of them. Sometimes we're lucky and it's just one week. I'll be checking IMDB.com to see the latest updates.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Jazzy :D Could be a battle taking on Christian Bale and I know James McAvoy has a bit of a following, but we're up for the job! I'll keep my fingers crossed that you get to see the films at the same time as the US. We have a longer wait here too for the smaller films - can be a lot longer :(

Hello everybody!!! :O)

Hey jazzy!
Hello from across the Andes!
In Chile we are lucky because we actually get the big movies one day before than the USA because movies open on Thursdays here. So my guess it's we will se PoP before our friends in the Northern hemisphere ,Op

:O( But we will have to wait for "Nailed" and "Brothers". If they make it to the big screen at all. "Zodiac" for example, never reached my city. I had to watch in on DVD. I think "Jarhead" wasn't on theaters either. Maybe in some art house in Santiago (Chile's capital city) but not in the multiplex chains which is all we have in the other cities.

Hi Sara! well, it's the same here, movies open on thursday, so we usually see it one day in advance- I get to see Rendition and Zodiac in the theater, but I don't remember about Jarhead though... I very much doubt we will get to see Nailed :(
I'm still waiting to see a few movies (not with Jake) and I'm not even sure they'll be released on DVD...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sara :D Jarhead didn't make theatres near me either, nor did Proof. I hope that now all of Jake's films will get the screenings they deserve. I'm going to hope they showed Nailed round here.

Hey there Jazzy :D

I'm imagining you teo chatting across the Andes, such a long way from here and yet there you are!
