'A faint sweetness like grass and with it the rushing cold of the mountain'

As is usually the case with a Brokeback post, they travel in pairs. Yesterday's talk about Diana Ossana and the script of Brokeback made me want to spend some time with the story today and it also reminded me of this - an interview with Diana and her co-screenwriter Larry McMurtry, which you can listen to here.

One of the most interesting aspects of this interview is when Diana and Larry discuss how and when they knew to leave the original story alone. The interview recalls one such moment - at the four-year reunion in those seconds when Jack and Ennis pull apart - which Annie described/painted so perfectly 'Ennis can still smell Jack, the intensely familiar odour of cigarettes, musky sweat and a faint sweetness like grass, and with it the rushing colour of the mountain.' Listening to those words, I know now I must find an audio book of Brokeback. Hearing the words of Annie Proulx, for me, is even better than imagining them said. [Edited to add: I've been reminded that, in the story, Annie says 'the rushing cold of the mountain' and not colour, as the interviewer here says.]

While you're about it, and if you're in a Brokeback mood, there are more audio interviews here. One, with Gustavo Santoalalla, reveals that the music preceded the filming and that it influenced direction and acting. In another, Ang Lee recalls Michelle Williams' instructions to Heath and to Jake to kiss harder and also admits to painting that Wyoming sky a slightly bluer blue, to match, perhaps, the Wyoming sky blue of Jack Twist's eyes.

These interviews were conducted in the run-up to the Oscars, which, of course, did not end as they should. However, not wanting to dwell on that tonight, I thought instead that I would take a look at one of the most appealing sights of the 2006 Academy Awards - Jake Gyllenhaal on the red carpet.

In the first of these two videos, at least one of the red carpet commentators is dangerously distracted and loses all train of thought - and who can blame her? - when Jake comes into view. She is to be admired - when Jake comes into my line of sight on a red carpet I tend to hurl myself into a parallel universe. I also like the lady's disbelief when her colleague blurts out that he hadn't noticed Jake. As if!

In the second video, there is a chance to focus on what is without doubt one of the most important elements of any red carpet, anywhere, anytime - how good Jake Gyllenhaal looks on it.

So a mix of emotions this evening and all because of the sparse and stunning words of Annie Proulx, the vision of Ang Lee, the bravery and commitment of the actors, the sound and colour of the mountain, and the beauty of Jake Gyllenhaal. An intoxicating mix.

I was watching that clip a few days ago and I was like "did she just lost her track because she saw Jake?" . I mean... she must have seen hundred of movie stars!! Of course only a few are as sexy as our Jake. ,Op

Hugs,

Even the most cynical and experienced of HW interviewers seem to go a bit wobbly when Jake's around.
I think it's funny. He's just a guy! Right? ;-)

Hi Sara :D There are movie stars and then there are movie stars...

Hey Rubes :D Errrr Wrong!! At least we acted with dignity and elegance when we saw Jake :D

Delicious second day on Brokeback! and it tickled me that you consider it obligatory to do "a pair" :)

I did do a double take when I say you quote "the rushing colour of the mountain" whereas Annie says "the rushing COLD of the mountain".

In the meantime Ive listened to the first NPR audio (these are wonderfully new to me!) and see that Melissa Block does say "colour" and Diana did not correct her.

Smelling a colour takes a fair bit of weed, in my experience.

Now, WDW, darlin' I KNOW you are forever lost in the blue of Jack/Jake's eyes, and I honor that, I really do - (although I also sometimes pity you as I pity myself) - but my sense of Ang making the sky bluer than blue would refer back to that wonderful line in the story: "the boneless blue was so deep, said Jack, that he might drown looking up."

But then, Ang is as human as you and me, and he might have drowned looking into Jake's eyes.

Would love to stay in this place forever! Looking forward to the other two audios!

As well as getting high on one another, I think everybody got high on the language of the story. Maybe I should just speak for myself: I did, and do.

Another great Brokeback post - your first picture of Jack in his night camp, is one of the most beautiful of him, and one of my favorite passages in the book brought to life on screen - I love it because it almost looks all in blue, a color I associate with Jack Twist. :)

. . . Jack, in his dark camp, saw Ennis as night fire, a red spark on the huge black mass of mountain.

Pure poetry, in visual or written form, whether the original story, screenplay or film, or comination of all three, by Annie Proulx, Ang Lee, Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana, and Jake and Heath bringing the main characters to life. Just gorgeous! I'd love to hear read in audio format too. Would make my commute to work very enjoyable.

And seeing Jake on the Red Carpet, can't imagine how wonderful that was WDW! :)

Hi there Pia - very interesting comment as you've kinda hit my nail on the head (begging the pardon of Jessica Biel...). When Ang talks about the Wyoming blue - the big sky of Wyoming and Montana as he goes on to call it - to me it's a happy coincidence because te blue of the sky reflects the blue of Jack's eyes. You are so right - I am forever lost!

Interesting how the colour and the cold were confused here - I don't find it too unusual because I do think the colours of landscapes have a smell of their own! But I'm a bit weird like that... Thanks for pointing it out though - it's a while since I read the OS and I never remember words.

I find it so hard to do one BBM post alone - they're like buses!

Hey BK! That's one of my favourite pictures too - of Jack and of Jake. Blue for Wyoming and blue for Jack. Ennis is brown to me - brown like the earth and the mountain.

I would love to get hold of an audio. I must see if there is such a thing.

I doubt even Annie Proulx herself could describe my happiness at seeing Jake on a red carpet :D

Dignity and what now? Oh yes, that's right. British reserve in full effect. ;-)

I thought 'colour' didn't sound right, Pia. :)
The short story is a beautifully written piece. Not a word out of place or an unnecessary one.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Rubes! British diginity and reserve personified! That's probably what Jake thought when we calmly called out to him - he would have said to himself 'These Brits are reserved' :D

Brokeback post always brings tears to my eyes... this story will never stop breaking my heart. Thanks for the beautiful post, WDW! My favourite line in Annie Proulx's story is Ennis had suddenly swung from the deck and laid the "ministering angel" out in the wild columbine, wings folded.

This "should have won" screening reminds me of an anonymous post posted on Oscarwatch.com soon after BBM lost Best Picture:

I had a vision march 5th,
I swear I saw jack and Ennis turn down their heads when " crash" was read and relegated back to the solitary confinement of the Mountains. i swear i saw Ennis lead as jack followed in disbelief. I swear i saw the fight of their last meeting resurrected, and the brief glimpses of the beauty they shared, albeit cut short by what surrounds them. i swear i saw that they held onto each other harder then ever before, harder then any prior fight. They knew all they have is each other. the world is not for them. They are sun and moon forever united. So full of hope that they could be with one another in the light, only to find out the tire iron still exists just in the body of a ignorant group and shape of a white envelope.

i swear i saw ennis and jack, slowly gather their belongings. Fold up the tent. put away the joyous harmonica for the last time. Climb on their horses and ride out of the auditorium. riding past the howling coyotes and learned snakes. Where they'll go? they don't know. But they know they are not welcome here and our boys are too good to stay any place they are not wanted.
I swear i saw them ride into me. they ride into my heart. make a camp. build a cabin. run a cattle operation. In my heart i will protect them from the world. I will protect them from what they don't understand. Ennis will hold jack and jack will hold ennis in my offer of peace and a home in my soul. I will let them love as they wish and only i can dream. Forever a part of me.
Jack and Ennis... I swear ..."

oops... sorry for the super long post! but you know once I get into BBM mood, I can't stop...

Oh Winterbird, that's gorgeous!! Oh my, feeling weepy! I know what I'm going to do this wet weekend and that's take out the original story and the screenplay (From story to...) and read it all again. It's been too long. I love the ministering angel line so much :D Thank you very much!

Sara Andrea Vera said...

Winterbird, you made me cry!!!
(and I shouldn't be crying because I'm at work)
That was absolutely beautiful.

When BBM and the boys didn't win taht night I was heartbroken but I comforted myselft thinking that at least they have many years ahead to win many Oscars. Now I'm feel angry and frustrated to think that our dear Heath was robbed and he won't have that chance... I also feel Jake has on his shoulder to win for both of them. :*O(

It's no good - I'm heading for the tub of icecream and the bottle of red... *(

Sorry to make you cry, Sara and WDW... you know after that Oscars, I started to have a "f**k you academy* tag in my LJ and just ranted on for the next few weeks.

Now I couldn't care less about this Employee of the Month type of award... even if they give one to Heath for TDK, it wouldn't be the same.

Oh My Gosh Winterbird - that is so beautiful. I think we all felt this way. Thanks so much for this. :')

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'm just glad you shared that Winterbird :) I'm past my rage with the Academy now, instead I like to focus on the positives (albeit with one eye on how beautiful Jake looked that night) and it's clear that this is one film to stand the test of any Academy.

Hey there BK :D

I've just gone and ordered the audiobook so that BBM can be read to me while I drive :)

Jake is a just a guy? Right! Just as Saint Peter's is just a church, and the Pacific is just a pond.

Ang needed to do something about the sky, in my opinion. There are places in this world (India and Montana come to mind) where the sky is so overwhelming that you have to make it larger than life in order to be sure people notice how important it is. In one of the first scenes in BBM, Eniis is walking through Signal, headed for Aguirre's trailer, and the immensity of the sky, with its massive clouds, dwarfs him. What a moment!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! Love the Pacific is just a pond analogy - definitely :D That opening shot of Ennis getting out of the truck against that big sky - staggering. The landscape is so flat and featureless but Ang turns it into something monumental.

That was beautiful, winterbird. And sad.

Very beautiful comment, Winterbird.

Again, WDW another totally lovely and poignant post on BBM. Sigh.... Love that Jake's school was so proud of him and his Oscar nom. :) And how could you not swoon when Jake walks the red carpet. He was stunning at the Oscars for sure.

Am watching the opening ceremonies of the Olympics. Have a great night all.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good morning everyone! Raining cats and dogs out there...

Hi Narcissa :)

Morning Get Real! I love the comment from Jake's school and how proud they were and, no doubt, are of him.

I saw the opening ceremony - absolutely amazing, and watching the rowing now - wearing me out :D

Have a great day everyone!

O Elegy sounds interesting and one of my favorite reviewers, Andrew O'Hehir of salon.com, thot Ben K "brilliant" - waiting for your response, WDW, and others -

Hey, everybody, have a great weekend. . .

Anonymous said...

p.s. Im confused about filming schedule of PoP - changing release date doesnt affect this, does it? Some seem to think so.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Pia! Elegy does sound interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing it, hopefully on Monday.

I'm of the belief that the change in release date for PoP will effect post-production and the CGI and not the actual filming.

What a horrible wet day here :(

Hey, WDW, its another day of bolts of thunder and sun here.

Maybe I shouldnt mention last night's dream, but I cant resist. Diana O. said with a shrug that Jake was not very good in bed. :D :D :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia! That must have been an interesting dream conversation... maybe she was just trying to keep him to herself :D

Watching the men's gymnastics - yum :)

paulh said...

Jake in a tent might be another matter entirely. :-)

I would still like to see Jake play Abrams in a remake of "Chariots of Fire." Just a thought, since the Olympics are underway now. Or Jake could do a kung fu movie.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good point about the tent, Paul :D

Love Chariots of Fire, much of that was filmed near me. I have an image in my head now of Jake as Kung Fu Panda... (but cuter) :)

Chris making salad and inviting "Ethel and Ralph Serman. . . and maybe Jake. . ."

I hadnt seen this one. but silly ole me, the mention of Jake makes me smile like a giddy guppy - or a caught fish!

Anonymous said...

ps no Im mistaken, I think the youngster who's in the background in named Jake. there go my dreams I mean your dream WDW of Jake-as-farmer - oh well, the strawberries looked fresh out of the patch. . . yum yum.

Anonymous said...

Oh I love this stuff - this is the first video I've seen of Chris, farmer's markets of MV, and cooking. I'll certainly catch up on the other videos. Thanks Pia! :)

What I saw of the opening ceremonies for the Olympics were beautiful.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there! Sorry I missed you - I've been watching Rendition while listening to Gavin's commentary while doing today's post.

Thanks very much for the link, Pia! At last I can watch these Chris videos as my computer is fixed. I couldn't play videos for such a long time :( I want to hear Chris say that Jake is coming to dinner, even if it's the 'wrong'Jake.

I will always have my own private fantasy of Jake as a farmer :D We could pick raspberries together (a bit too allergic to strawberries unfortunately...)

Hi there BK! I caught the highlights of the opening ceremony and just staggeringingly beautifil. Makes me wonder what'll happen for the London opening in 2012 (not all pearly kings and queens I hope :()

Hope everyone's having a good evening - it's rained all flippin day here but it least it's given my car a good wash while reflooding the interior.

Zodiac said...

How many Jakes are on Martha's Vineyard?:)

Chris comes across as a very adorable guy, warm, a little bit shy and I can easily picture him as Jake's best friend. I've seen other of his videos and I loved them all. And all this delisious fresh food and these incredibly handsome Vineyard boys... mmmm, it must be heaven;) It's a pity we don't see them together often nowadays.

I saw TDK yesterday for the second time and then I came back and read your post, WDW, and almost cried. For Heath, for Jack and Ennis, for how cruel the world can be sometimes. Heath's Joker is incredible, it's more than incredible, it's just a cinematic adventure. I was walking past IMAX today and all the tickets for TDK for Saturday have been sold out.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Zodiac - good to hear from you! I'm so glad to hear the post spoke to you after ywatching TDK - I was very emotional last night too.

There should be just the one Jake on MV and that's for sure... Love Jake and Chris together and I hope we do get to see some more of them.

I'm hoping I get into the IMAX before the end of the run.

Have a good evening :D
