Jake Gyllenhaal - just read those lips... Giving everybody 'a little bit of something'

Following the recent post on Jake Gyllenhaal's beautiful eyes, in which some of us can see different shades of colour, I thought today it was time to appreciate that other feature of Jake's which first attracted me to him back in 2004 - those lips and that mouth. It doesn't seem to matter what he does with it - smiles, laughs, eats, chews gum, grimaces, talks, kisses, licks it - or even what Jake does to cover it (moustache or beard) - but it always grabs hold of your eyes, set off as it is by that instantly memorable and recognisable mole above the lip.

In this favourite video, the power of one of Jake's greatest weapons in his campaign to make our hearts tremble is captured - the lick of the lips.

And there is the suggestion that it might not be purely unintentional, and we should not be surprised that Jake is aware of its impact - he's had years of watching its effect.

Susan Sarandon's appreciation for Jake's beauty is well-known, fellow Moonlight Miler Ellen Pompeo apparently loved Jake's lips - and his hair. This feature is full of little gems about why Jake is a favourite crush, as these memories from Moonlight Mile demonstrate: Jake 'blushed when praised for arranging a surprise birthday party for his driver on the set. "We just brought him a cake," he demurs. "That was all."'

'Maybe so, but in a business known for supersize egos, Gyllenhaal's small acts—like his tendency to let everyone else go through the catering line before him during the two-month shoot for Mile in Massachusetts and L. A. last year—did not go unnoticed. "Everyone had crushes on him—wardrobe, makeup, everybody," says his costar Aleksia Landeau, 27. "He's not like those actors who are like, 'Look at me!' He has a poetic soul. He lets people come to him."'

Dustin Hoffman didn't focus on Jake's eyes or lips... 'Success hasn't changed him; he's retained his own unique, personal insanity.' Brad Silberling calls Jake 'a generous soul'. I was amused to hear of Jake: "I'm slogging through David McCullough's biography of John Adams." I wonder if he finished it...

A Californian - and ferret racing

I was given a challenge today by Ruby - to fit the subject of ferret racing into this evening's post. The reason being that, when Gyllenhaalics get together, they are able to do more than simply gab about Jake, although I must admit that we discovered it is possible to gab about Jake and watch ferret racing at the same time. Sadly, my favourite ferret - as modelled here by Ruby (and its handler) - finished last because it preferred to lie on its back and have its stomach tickled.

So, just when I thought I would find no way to link Jake to this traditional sport - surely to be reinstated into the London Olympics - we discovered that the whole proceedings were taking place under the auspices of the Californian Republican flag (and an old guy panning for gold).

And while some of us have this flag on our fridges in magnet form, others go much further and turn it into a fashion statement, and none does it better than Jake Gyllenhaal. These pictures date from last summer, at another time when Jake spent much of the time away from the public eye (and California) - this year, at least, we will see the fruits of this absence in the theatres during May 2010.

But back to those lips...

Dusty the ferret was very cute. And smart. I think I'd rather roll over and have my tummy tickled than run through a length of pipe and back.

The California Republic flag was a bit of a gift wasn't it? They must have known we were coming.

At last, the ferret-racing post ;)
Looks like a fun show. *

You know it was only a matter of time before we had a ferret-racing post

Evenin' all :D

Hey Rubes - the ferret was cute but became less cute when we heard it had bitten its handler shortly after they let you pet it. Be grateful you still have 10 fingers this evening :D

Hi Nouskie :D I never knew ferret-racing was such a popular sport in California, but now I know how Jake passes those long hot evenings!

The Celtic liquor was pretty good too but it did taste quite a bit like cough medicine.

I had no idea people were expecting a ferret-racing post - if I'd have known I could have done one last year when I saw the same ferrets - they were much faster last year.

Jake has lovely lips - and I think I know what I want to do with them...

Someone in my neighborhood used to have a pet ferret. I saw him walking it one day, but haven't seen it since. Its absence doesn't seem ferret all. [PUN ALERT]

Anyway, I think ferrets are very very cute. A picture of Jake holding a fluffy ferret in his arms would be fantastic!

Oh, I keep forgetting to mention that there's a satiric movie trailer just before "Tropic Thunder," in which Robert Downey, Jr. and Toney Maguire play gay monks in an upcoming film (equally spurious). Since both actors have co-starred with Jake in films, I kinda wish they would make such a movie for real. :-(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Paul! A few people in my family (two generations back) keep ferrets and they're not friendly ferrets... Not that long ago I saw a woman walking a meerkat on a lead round the streets of Oxford. Jake should be encouraged to pose with a ferret! I loved the monkey pic :D

paulh said...

That should have been Tobey Maguire, not Toney Maguire.
(Naughty, naughty fingers!...)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Paul, I'm hoping Tropic Thunder will eventually play here :( I'll look out for that trailer. A gay monk movie, eh?!

I have a friend who has 5 ferrets all rescued. They do have a tendency to nibble at your toes if you wear sandals. Some are taken out on leads for walks. Her daughter is getting married soon and I hope that they will be ring bearers !

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Chuckle M :D 5 ferrets is a lot of ferrets. Mr WDW used to have a rescue Muscovy duck (called Cocoa) and that used to try and eat people's shoelaces - and chase guests down the street. I wouldn't want a ferret nibbling my feet, at a wedding or anywhere else for that matter :D

Now a duck would be a fun pet to have I'd like to walk to the park with a duck. However another friend got two and they lasted barely a week outside with urban foxes... my ambition is to have a pet wombat and as I live in Scotland its pretty unlikely !

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I reckon a wombat could give those foxes a run for their money, M :D Scotland would be a great place for a biggish and unusual pet!

Ferrets! Ewwwww! Members of the weasel/fisher family. Farmers dont like these guys they bite the heads off hens and rip open the bellies of porcupines and will burrow down any hole they see. Farm wives hate them. Ewwww! Had a weasel in my farmhouse one winter, heard the mice scream as he bit their heads off one by one.
Eeeewwwww!

Yeah Jake is hot.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Eeewwwwww Pia :D You have scary ferrets! Ugh, poor porcupines. I'm glad to say Ruby escaped unscathed. The guy did have a rather charming polecat too... I do have a liking for weasels and stoats :)

Jake is hot!

"I do have a liking for weasels and stoats"

p.s. polecats! P.U! honestly!

Anonymous said...

p.p.s. I am so holding my nose! I wasnt able to write PIA.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Heehee Pia :D I do like them all out there in the wild, but I can see you don't have a liking for flat long and bendy critters! I'll have to include more sensible animals in future posts :D

I did forget to say in the post that the falconers lost one of their hawks today and I did wonder if it would go after poor Dusty the Ferret. I think the bird came back eventually... ferret-less.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I couldn't smell anything but the curry sauce stall :D

o WDW dont say "flat long and bendy . " ewwwww! creeps me out!

Awwww what a cute post, I adore ferrets, weasels, urban foxes, any critter really. Falconry? Such a beautiful thing, I wonder will that be in PoP too? And Jake has the most beautiful eyes and lips in the world - and hands, I know WDW will do a feature on that one day. I loved that he remembered someone's birthday like that, Jake is very sweet. :)

paulh said...

There used to be a pet store at the Dedham Mall, and they always had ferrets in the window. They were charming and cute and playful and funny! Who knew they could also bite?

If Jake was in an animated film about ferrets, you'd watch him, wouldn't you? ;-)

Jake has a pretty mouth.Very pretty.

WDW, please, do a feature on Jake's hands.

What have you been talking about, people? Ferrets? I haven't even seen one in my whole life. I'm a city girl.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good morning everyone - and a holiday Monday - phew :D

Hi there Anon! That's a really good thought - I wonder if there will be falconry in PoP. I do hope so. I liked that Jake remembered someone's birthday too and I wonder if he baked the cake...

Hey Paul! They could bite your finger off if they wanted to. According to the handler, you have to handle them everyday from when they're born if you want to avoid death by ferret. Bloody cute though. And yes, if Jake was in an animated film about ferrets, I'd be there in the front row.

That reminds me - wouldn't it be great if Jake did a commentary for a wildlife film? Love that. Or if they filmed him doing a nature programme, going through the forest looking for chimps etc.

Morning Zodiac! Jake's hands are so lovely and expressive. I don't need much persuasion to do a hand post - but I'm not doing a foot post (don't like feet :D).

Never seen a ferret? Thank heavens I posted the pic of Dusty so that you could get a good look at one. My good deed ;D

Have a great day everyone - I'm staying indoors today so there shouldnt be any more encounters with long, flat, furry and bendy critters. One hopes :D

I think I'm going to watch Jarhead today!

good day y'all!

well one last word about weasels - y'know, they are banned as pets in New York City and there was a hullabaloo some time ago about this:

"David Guthartz, founder of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Ferrets, called a radio show (New York City former mayor)Giuliani was hosting to complain about the citywide ban. Giuliani responded:

"There is something deranged about you. ... The excessive concern you have for ferrets is something you should examine with a therapist. ... There is something really, really very sad about you. ... This excessive concern with little weasels is a sickness. ... You should go consult a psychologist. ... Your compulsion about—your excessive concern with it is a sign that there is something wrong in your personality. ... You have a sickness, and I know it's hard for you to accept that. ... You need help"

Just sayin' :D :D :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good morning Pia!

OMG, that is so funny! Giuliani really has it in for weasels doesn't he? Maybe he's had a bad experience, a bit like Jake with his hamsters eating one another (although I don't think Jake would propose banning hamsters - or would he?). I wonder if there is a medical name for this sickness!

Thanks for the laughs :DD I have to go out and buy icecream - it's an emergency. That fair I was at yesterday with Ruby, they had no vanilla icecream left - what is the world coming to....?

I just mentioned the NYC ban on weasels/ferrets to a co-worker, and she was on the ferrets' side, because a former roommate had had one, and the ferret was lovable and playful.

Now, if it had been a mongoose, that might have been a different story. :-(

I've seen pictures of genets, and they have beautiful eyes, as does Jake.

You guys!

"You have a sickness, and I know it's hard for you to accept that. ... You need help"

:D :D :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Paul :D I wonder how far outside the gates of NYC you're allowed to have a ferret and if there was a mass exodus from the city on the day of the ban. Hmmm. I had a look at a genet after reading your comment and I think they're too catlike for me. I like cats but only individual cats that I know, not as a collective.

You could be right, Pia! But, then again, have you ever had concerns about your anti-ferret feelings? I wonder how Jake feels about this divisive little critter...

Went out for icecream and I forgot it :(

Hope everyone's having a good day!

I want to add that at 79% of PoP the Prince is finally half-naked. He ripps off the rest of his shirt and is now wearing only trousers.

Hello again!!!

"Everyone had crushes on him—wardrobe, makeup, everybody," says his costar Aleksia Landeau, 27.

::rolleyes::
Yeah... well, and the Earth goes around the Sun... Hello! That probably was the overstatement of the century. Who wouldn't have a crush on Jake? I'm sure it's physically imposible not to love him, especially if you happen to be in close proximity of his sweet, fun personality and yeah... those gorgeous lips... ::sighs:: I can't post here what I want to do with those lips because I'm sure there are minors who visit this blog and it would be illegal for them to read it in any country member of the UN. ::sighs::

You know what I would love? I would love Jake to have a show like Anthony Bourdain's (I'm a big Bourdain fan). So I will have my three passions together: Jake, food, Jake, travelling and Jake, of course. I would have it in repeat play forever!!!

And I'm sorry but you are wrong.
Jake isn't hot... he is HOT!!! ,Op

Hugs,

Hey Happy Zodiac! That is GOOD news! It's fascinating to hear that the Prince is ripping his clothes off like this - does that mean he will be naked by the end???

Hi Sara! Jake is irresistible and of that I am certain. They should have to innoculate all those who have to work with him because it must be overwhelming (and not easy on spouses and partners). That sounds like a great idea for a future Jake project - I'm really into the idea of Jake filming a documentary, I seem to be saying that a lot at the moment, but I really am!
