Peter Sarsgaard's iron grip and Jake Gyllenhaal's ideal director experience

Last week, Peter Sarsgaard and Maggie Gyllenhaal were spotted in that old favourite filming haunt of ours, Santa Fe, where Maggie is currently 'lensing' Crazy Heart along with Robert Duvall and Jeff Bridges. It seems Ramona and her parents were enjoying a spot of face-painting at the Santa Fe Children's Museum, although it is not known what design they picked (a ferret perhaps?). Since then, Peter has presumably had to leave New Mexico for London where rehearsals for The Seagull begin today (25 August) before the production moves lock stock and barrel to Broadway in September.

Peter will be sharing the stage with his An Education co-star Carey Mulligan - who also has a role in Brothers (An Education also features, of course, Alfred Molina, who is currently in Morocco with Jake). This new picture of Carey as Jenny from An Education comes from the blog of the film's screenwriter Nick Hornby, who also gives his impression of seeing the unfinished film for the first time alongside an unsuspecting audience who were literally pulled off the street:

'It felt to me as though it went well – people laughed in the right places, and the friend I went with cried in the right places, too. (Other members of the audience may have cried too, of course, but crying tends to be a quieter activity in the cinema. If you can actually hear people bawling like babies, your film is probably too sad for general consumption.) And I enjoyed it, much more than I thought I would, given one’s natural distaste for one’s own work. It looks great, and the performances are fantastic. But four years’ work went by in a flash, or in an hour and forty-five minutes, anyway. Part of me felt as though the audience should experience the same kind of slog as we endured. And though I wouldn’t want people to sit through, say, a four-year long film, it wouldn’t kill them if it lasted twelve hours or so, would it?'

It seems Peter got the job of Trigorin in The Seagull because Carey asked him to name actors he thought suitable, whereupon Seagull director Ian Rickson threw away the list and hired Peter instead. The reason being: 'The virility of Trigorin, and his attachment to nature, his sexuality, his vibrancy, I feel is a really important thing... Young actors who are very masculine and have that soulfulness are very hard to find.' Rickson certainly has one in Peter.

In this article, Peter also describes his response to seeing Heath Ledger as the Joker, a performance that demonstrated so perfectly to Peter that extremely talented and so called 'independent' actors can find a home in blockbusters and franchises (one also must think of Prince of Persia): 'You see Heath Ledger’s performance and you go, well, there’s somebody who shows that it’s possible to be an enormously amazing actor in the middle of a franchise... I see that movie and I see a man who is happy acting—it looks like he’s tap-dancing. The part does not destroy the actor, ever, if they’re good. That had absolutely nothing to do with what happened to him.'

Peter says in his Screen Test video interview for New York Times - and it's such a good self-portrait - that he finds the stage more difficult but more interesting than a movie set. You have to retain an 'iron grip' for the length of the production.

And with all the political talk going on lately, with Obama's announcement of his running mate, this seems like a good point at which to post Peter's video for the 18 in 08 campaign. If this man asked you to vote, how could you say no?

So what of another of Peter's co-stars, Jake Gyllenhaal? Today I revisited Jarhead, which has so many attractions and reasons for watching that it would be impossible to list them all - but one has blue eyes and the most gorgeous smile you can imagine, despite his hair issues. So here is Jake on the set of Jarhead describing the film and paying tribute to its director Sam Mendes. I just hope that Jake is having a similar kind of rewarding experience on the set in Morocco with Mike Newell.

'To have a director who appreciates who you are, who's not making you into something else that you're not, is really awesome; is probably unlike any other experience I'll ever have again.'

Peter is such an interesting guy. I'd love to know him and am getting to know a small part of him through his work and interesting film choices. I like his neutrality in that ad making the focus on young people voting.

Jarhead Jake makes me feel 'kick ass'. The hair issues again?!! Look WDW, the hair just gets in the way of focusing on those eyes, lips etc. *deep sigh*.... He knows what he wants from a director and I think he's not out to 'please' anymore. This can also work against him because directors are the ones that drive the story and have the vision. If the process is collaborative within reason he should thrive, otherwise, he should try his hand at it and see what it's like. Perhaps it will give him a new perspective - I'd love to see his directorial debut, even if it's a cycling tour or anything.

Olympics are over so blues are starting to set in. Didn't they do well? Off to Mansfield tomorrow so will probably see Rebecca Adlington coming home. Hope I can get road access to see my nephew *mad*.

Jake directing? How about "Toads and ferrets of Morocco"? ;-)

I've just gone back and realised I'd missed a whole post on Jake's lips. He uses them to devastating effect.

Haha... now Paul, that would be an interesting journey into the psyche of toads and ferrets. What's their motivations? He'd have to narrate the feature too :DD

Hello there everyone! And the wine is open... Ready to go!

Ah thanks Sara! I know you like Kate and I thought why have one Jake and Kate pic when you can have two... I wonder if she has preferences for his hair... And she and Sam live not too far down the road from me so I like that connection :D (Their house is a little bigger than mine)

Hi there Sheba! I know, I have the post-Olympic blues too, especially as I've missed so much. I'm going to try and catch up something of it on BBCi over the week. I want to see the London part of the closing ceremony - I hear that at the party afterwards London's nutty mayor Boris Johnson was explaining that table tennis was invented by the English and that they called it hee haww or something like that - The French saw a table and thought of dinner; The English saw a table and thought of pingpong. I hate that sometimes he makes me laugh :)

Well you know what I think about Peter - love 'im! Seen him three times and talked to him twice and he has been so kind to me, and funny, joking about Jake even. I think he's fascinating - he's a thinker but he doesn't take himself too seriously and he's sexy without trying.

Jarhead Jake's hair will always be an issue to me - sigh! It's just so damn distracting. Jake's relationship with his directors is so interesting and they vary enormously. Jake has said that they're important to him and also that they're not. I think they are but that sometimes, as you say, he isn't given as much of an input as he's used to from others.

I want to see Jake having a go at directing at some time - and I think he will - but only on condition that he casts himself in the main role. In another set of comments here yesterday I thought aloud about Jake being the commentator of a documentary or the subject of one - such as in a wildlife film. And I'd love that too.

I hope you see Dame Adlington tomorrow :D

hey paul! I would love so so much to see Jake make a film about Morocco and filming there - he should be an expert by now! I don't know if they have ferrets there - maybe ferrets would have to be replaced by long flat and wriggly lizards?

Sheba! You missed my ferret and lip post?! I'm shocked!

"I hear that at the party afterwards London's nutty mayor Boris Johnson was explaining [about] table tennis ....... I hate that sometimes he makes me laugh :)"

He's a buffoon! He looked like a sack of potatoes at the closing ceremony of the Olympics and he was rubbish at waving that flag >:o( .... but yes, you're right, he is a great orator.. wiff waff's coming home indeed LOL.

"Sheba! You missed my ferret and lip post?! I'm shocked!"

Sorry chuck, I got Olympic Fever and very little sleep kept me away from here. Please forgive me xx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sheba! I've not seen the flag waving yet - I hear everyone held their breath as they thought he'd drop it :D

I forgive you for missing my last post - you'll just have to read this one twice :D Hope you're feeling rested now.

well I dunno guys we're going from Olympic fever into political madness in Denver. and all of the political bloggers drink themselves silly. . .

My heads swimmin' - and speaking of swimming OMG - not only the wonderful Mike Phelps but the Aussie diver! And the amazing Jamaicans! shout out to Sheba! - all this got my head swimmin'

but down to earth - is there such a thing? - googling "ferrets in Morocco" I ended up (eventually) with stories of Ossie Clark, English designer. in Morocco - and began to wonder about class and poverty in Morocco and the poor Moroccan rabbits that are hunted down by ferrets -

haha Paul Jake doing a documentary about Moroccan toads (and ferrets) -

I wonder, about Jake as director -
must be both complicated and interesting, having director papa. well, Jake is interesting, for sure. . .

Rudy G had it right! If we make ferrets legal in New York City the terrorists win!

(haha)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Evenin' Pia :D I don't envy you USAns going through all of these political shenanigans.

Chuckling at googling "ferrets in Morocco"! I don't think the Moroccan rabbits are at risk from ferrets, or at least I hope not! Don't know about the toads though...

I do think that having grown up with director Stephen will make Jake very interested in the other side of the camera, but I do want him to focus on the side on which I can see him.

Lizards instead of ferrets? Good idea! Lizards never get the respect they deserve. I'll bet there's a bunch of them in Morocco.

Hairless Jake in "Jarhead" was not that bad. I'd like to see Jake grow his own hair in "Prince of Persia." Will that balance the scales any? ;-)

Yeah, I was kinda hoping for Jake's own beautiful silky hair - wonder if all hope is lost in that respect. I was also hoping for a leaner body. Maybe they have had to downsize his appeal, since he's gonna be half nekkid. dont want the world to spin off its axis. oh, why not, sez I.

watching the denver convention, Paul? I like Joe Biden.

I like the look of Joe, pia :)

Chaps, give Boris a break! He's a nice guy :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good morning everyone :D

Hi Paul! Lizards would be good and they're cheeky. When I lived in Israel I was sunbathing on the beach and when I woke up this monitor lizard was sharing my towel... Bloody big thing it was, size of a small car.

The hair contrast is good. I'll be interested to see how long it takes Jake to cut it all off again after PoP finishes filming!

Morning Pia! Maybe for some of the film Jake's hair will be its natural beautiful silky self - I do hope so. I need to see more pics :D Zodiac was saying in the comments to the last post that the Prince sheds his clothes throughout the Sands of Time game and at 79% he tore his shirt completely off! So maybe naked by 95%?

I'm looking forward to seeing some pics of the Denver convention tonight. I heard some of Mrs Obama's speech this morning on the radio.

Hey there Anouska! Boris is a nice guy but he's loupy :D

sheba said...

Hi WDW, I've read both posts twice and now there's twice as much drool... thanks *dryly* :DD

OK Anouska, I'll say something positive about Boris. He cycles to work. Is that ok? :DD

The presidential elections are really an exciting time. I like both candidates but the mere fact that McCain supports Bush..... eek!! You guys have some difficult choices to make in 10 weeks. Like the Olympics, the world is watching and we now know all about hanging chads ;D Best of luck.

Thanks Pia for the shout out... Phelps was amazing, I can imagine the welcome he'll get when he goes back to the states. The Brits love him over here already.

Usain was insane with all that gadding about. I've been trying to practice the victory dance he did and there's a new one called the Lightning Bolt when he points to the sky... its good fun but exhausting :DDD

Ok, back to Jake - I'd love for him to get rid of the extentions at the back, he doesn't need them, just the length in the front. Now I'm thinking of those pictures again. Anymore opportunities to repost them WDW, perhaps about his physical changes over the years. I never thought I'd fall so hard for a pale, skinny dude but I loved his broad shoulders.... but now!!! I can bearly stand to look at him too long... it does funny things to me.

Hot as Hell, he's a real he-man now.

See y'all later, a long drive ahead of me xxx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Sheba :D Glad to hear you've done your penance, even though it cost you drool! I agree about the length of Jake's hair at the back, I don't think it needs the extensions there either. I think we all need to sit down with Jake and just discuss it. I'm not usually one for skinny dudes either and I've never been one for Baby Jake, even though I love the films and him in them, but I do tend to take Grown Up Jake any which way :D Excellent idea about the post :D

Have a good drive - hope you don't get stuck behind too many caravans and horse boxes as I did at the weekend...

Hope everyone's having a good day!

Hello everybody!!!

Ah thanks Sara! I know you like Kate and I thought why have one Jake and Kate pic when you can have two... I wonder if she has preferences for his hair... And she and Sam live not too far down the road from me so I like that connection :D (Their house is a little bigger than mine)

You are so lucky!!!!
I truly adore Kate. I adore her even more than I adore Jake and, trust me, that's saying something. She is my goddess :O)

You know what? I love hairless Jake! I really like his look in "Jarhead". To be honest, I think that he usually waers his hair too long. JMHO.

But actually, Jake's hair is not so important for me. I love his eyes and his mouth so much that the rest is secondary. I specially love when he smiles and when he laughs because it reaches his eyes and his good mood is infectious. His smile always make me feel better :O)

Well you know what I think about Peter - love 'im! Seen him three times and talked to him twice and he has been so kind to me, and funny, joking about Jake even.

I really like Peter too! He is soooo talented!! And I think he is very handsome too. He looks great in "Rendition", very sexy. But I have noticed that his weight goes up and down very easily. I'm a Michael Bublé fan and he has the same "problem". Both of them are handsome guys no matter how much they weigh. But it must be annoying to be watching your weight constantly, especially because they work with their body (::rolleyes:: I know what you are thinking... you nasty-minded!)

:O) I'm looking forward to your next post! I have become addicted to this blog... well, I guess there are things worse to be addicted to than a Jake Gyllenhaal blog. Aren't they? ;OP

Hugs,

Ahh, again I soooo adore the Jake and Kate pics!!! Just LOVE them together and am so hoping for a movie with both of them...sigh... I hope Jake does another movie with Sam M. again too. I like him alot.

Picked up the NY Magazine with the Peter article. Am looking forward to him on stage. Sure seems like Jake, Maggie and Peter are busy.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sara! Jake has the most infectious smile and laugh - I love it when he laughs with his whole face and sometimes it makes him tilt back his body and so he laughs with all his body.

Talking of infectious, when I watch BBM, I always find myself yawning when Jack yawns. Odd but there you go...

Peter has this real thing for just letting his body relax after a role and I like that. It's a bit like Jake not bothering shaving I suppose.

Definitely worse things than being addicted to WDW! I'm glad to hear it!

Hey there Get Real :D Hope you're well over there in the big city. I would absolutely love Jake and Kate to do a movie together - they would definitely have chemistry. And I think Sam was good for Jake. Glad to hear you got the NY MAg, it was a reallly great article.

Hi, Anouska! Yeah Joe Biden still has some flavor in him in the midst of alotta hype, and not only on the political scene haha. I think of Dylan's line, "(they're)so obvious and you're not. . ."

Hi everybody else- lovely cool breeze and hot late summer sun. . .

(You can bet) Jake is hot :D :D :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Pia! we are promised such a warm end of the week - here's hoping. I don't know much about this Biden guy but he looks a cool guy to me.

Hope everyone's having a good evening. I am feeling very Jake-sentimental this evening.... I blame the Californian Shiraz.
