Man on a Wire - Phillippe Petit's adventure as recounted by Jake Gyllenhaal

When I visited my local theatre to see Elegy last week, I couldn't help but be slightly astonished that the film in the next cinema was Man on a Wire - the drama-documentary tale of Phillippe Petit who, back in 1974, did the unbelievable and put a line up between the two Twin Towers of NYC and walked between them, not once but eight times, at one point even lying on the rope, so far up above the streets.

Not surprisingly, this put me in mind of The Man Who Walked Between the Towers, the animated account of this achievement, which becomes even more inspiring and compulsive when one realises that the voice recalling this magical dance with danger and freedom belongs to none other than Jake Gyllenhaal. It's a short film but every second's commentary and poetry is hypnotic and mesmerising. But the appeal of the animation goes way beyond the obvious - by night, with lights dimmed, the sound of Jake's voice would lull even the most vehement action movie diehard into happy calmness.

I listened to it once, I was too into Jake's voice more than the story itself.. lol.

I recommend getting the audio version and listen to it on ipod. Definitely shouldn't be behind the wheels...

Have a good day everyone. I am off to double-bill movie watching tonight. X-Files and Hellboy 2...

Hi thre Winterbird :D I have it on my MP player as well, just love to listen to it. Mr WDW likes it too - but for the story... Enjoy the movies - I'm looking for a movie to see over the long weekend.

Hello!!!
Thanks for the post. I learn something new every day with you!!

I love listening to Jake's voice. I'm not sure if it's the voice itself or just that I adore Jake so much that I like everything about him. I have his radio interviews in my iPod so I can listen to him whenever I want.

But if I had to pick just a voice I would go for Matt Damon's. It's low and sexy.
Our dear Heath had a beautiful voice too. :O(

See you later!!!

Hi Sara! Ooh, I absolutely adore Jake's voice, and the way he says certain words. Very sexy. I'm intrigued to think of what his PoP English voice will be like. So true about Heath's voice :)

I love Heath's voice. He had the sexiest voice ever. Jake's voice is a little bit too boyish for my liking, but I love his gestures, intonation, silly voices he breaks into out of the blue. I have the DVD with Man Who Walked Between the Towers.

46% PoP, by the way. I've been playing for 2 days straight after a long break. But the fight I'm now in, I'm never going to win. It's just impossible. Now I have Farah by my side,so if they kill her, I'm going down, too. I have to fight and protect her. This Gemma girl, she'd better be worth it;)

Hi Zodiac! I do enjoy those silly voices too. I find Heath's voice more serious and more gentle. I find Jake's voice/accent interesting and quirky because of some of the ways in which he says things.

Blimey! You are doing so wekk at PoP - leaving me well behind (partly because I started playing Ape Escape if I'm honest... :D) So I'll be back to it this weekend and try and get past this battle I've been stuck at for a while. Protect Faria! She needs you!

I was reading a TV magazine yesterday and it mentioned that Gemma is in a couple of BBC dramas to be shown during the Autumn season - I think one about Austen and another based on Hardy's Tess. I'll be interested to see her.

Hope everyone's having a good day :D

I love Jake's voice - I've always thought it had a soothing quality. Both he and Heath had wonderful voices, each in a different way, and of course Heath had that wonderful Australian accent. I could listen to Jake's voice all day (or all night). That's something I usually notice about an actor, their voices. ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon :D Very soothing! Chuckle, must remember to focus on Jake's voice during PoP and not on the other 'distractions' :D

Oh, and I cannot wait to be distracted, WDW! 2010 is much too far away. ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Definitely too far away, anon... Jake, distract us!! (at least until Brothers is out)

Zodiac said...

Oh WDW, if it's the same fight we talked about, after he finds a knife at the top of the statue, it's 5% of the game but you can finally save it after you win it.

What's Ape Escape? Never heard of it.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Zodiac - I finished that fight - eventually - I'm onto the fight after that one.

Ape Escape (I'm playing the second one) is a highly intellectual game in which you try and net rogue apes who are taking over the world, by using a variety of gadgets and weapons. They're very speedy and cheeky... Some good landscapes in it. The first one's better.

Back OT Jake is Hot :D

I bought a book and CD set of "The Man who walked between tbe towers" on eBay, expecting to hear Jake's voice, but the CD turned out to be the original audiobook version, not the movie soundtrack. :-(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

OMG Paul :D Hope you sent it back with a stern admonishment... There can be only one version...

The documentary looks very impressive. Unfortunately, my very, very real fear of heights asserted itself while watching the trailer!!! I loved hearing Jake's reading. I wonder. Is the animated version available for young children?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Anon :) Me too with the fear of heights, and Jake too apparently so good company there :D I don't see why the animated version shouldn't be suitable for small children. I think the DVD contains this story (which can be seen in its entirety in the video I've put up) plus other 'inspiring stories'.

g'morning/day everypeeps!

I lov'd the petit adventure and Jake's narrative, although Im not esp. anxious to see the documentary - too close to home, and time. And Im not crazy about heights, myself, in fact, Im choosing Vicky Cristina Barcelona over The Dark Knight for tonights cinema adventure.

"Vicky Cristina Barcelona” is the first Woody Allen film to infuse this lofty world with serious body heat." so sez today's NYT.

Ive suffered enuff this week, I need sex!

However we may do a double feature.

O its almost Friday! ! ! And gorgeous weather.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Pia! I can hardly walk over a bridge without getting giddy so this doc's not for me :D Hope the Woody Allen is good - I enjoy some of his and hate others, you just can't tell.

Not Friday yet though :( But sunny here too - although of course it's the Notting Hill Carnival (and Reading Festival) this holiday weekend so bound to chuck it down!

Forget Woody, Im going for Bardem, since Jacobo's not putting out, lately. :D :D :D And Im REALLY missing him!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia! I won't fight you for Bardem ;) We need to get Jake out of his day job for a while to come and entertain us - and to put out!

Hey there. :)

Sigh....adore Jake's melodic voice, especially for MOAW. Although as Pia mentioned my heart hurts thinking of the new doc. All still so raw. :/ But OMG, still swooning over the last post of those big, gorgeous blue eyes. Whatever shade of blue/grey, etc. they take on they get me every time.

I have to say I am very dissapointed about Brothers not being at TIFF. :( I just really want it to get some buzz and recognition.

Loved "Vicky Cristina Barcelona". Very enchanting, imo and Javier is so damn sexy... We NEED Jake to give us some of that asap! ;p

Still addicted to the Olympics.

It is beautiful here too.

Have a wonderful rest of the week...almost Friday!

xoxo

Hey Get Real! :D So glad to hear you're still swooning over our blue eyes. I am definitely sufferening from the TIFF Brothers Blues right now - I'm keeping my fingers cross for London (would that be LIFF?) but I'm not hopeful.

I just don't get this Javier thing... Don't shoot me but I have a little affection for Brendan Fraser :D He makes me want to pet him.

I have to catch up with the Olympics - I want to see these marathon lake swims.

Have a good rest of the day :D

I'm home, I have wine, so I'm happy :) Need to do some Jaking...

One of the movies that's opening tomorrow is "House Bunny," starring someone everyone here has seen on the screen before, because she danced with Jake Gyllenhaal in "Brokeback Mountain. She played LaShawn. ;-)

WDW, maybe one of your future posts can focus on Jake's dancing.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! I've heard of that one, Anna Faris, I think her name is. I like to see Jake dance :D I've done a post with some dancing in it - I may well do another one; definitely a subject that merits it :D

I adore every single molecule of Jake!!! But no one in the world had a voice like Heath. He had a sexy voice from the time he was 15 or 16. Not comparable. Jake has a soft voice and it is very melodic. but it is so, so different from Heath's they just aren't comparable, IMHO. It isn't that I prefer one over the other at all. It's just that Heath is in a class all by himself. The only other person I can think of to compare to Heath, that even comes close, is Sean Bean. He has That Voice, too. Those are the only two I know of. And I prefer Heath's. Sometimes, I wish I could think of something about Heath I didn't care for. Maybe it would help. But I doubt it.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Anon :D Heath's voice was very special, even as the Joker - I loved his voice in that - sexy and so frightening all at the same time.

I just got back from "House Bunny." Anna Faris charmed everyone in that film, albeit with some occasional despair when she found herself in over her head.

I'm finding it intriguing that "Vicky Christina Barcelona" was so well received, especially by women viewers. There was audible applause at the end of it when I saw it. I didn't think it was anything special (aren't voiceovers supposed to be taboo?), but maybe that's because I'm a guy. I did, however, like and admire Woody's ability to make the entire film look as if it just sort of happened by accident. Such spontaneity is sadly lacking from too many movies these days. The actors seemed to be real people, not actors. Another plus!

But the voiceovers seemed stiff and wordy to me. Go figure.
