Prince of Persia - creating a swashbuckling 'A-level summer blockbuster' and not Resident Evil in sand...

There is a new Ubisoft trailer for the forthcoming Prince of Persia 'next generation' game and, even though not directly related to the Prince of Persia movie, it's difficult to disassociate the two entirely. While the film may be based on the storyline of the the first game, it's tempting to think that some of the spirit of the new game, with its outrageous parkour, the equal(ish) relationship between the Prince and his heroine, and the costumes, may influence the film we finally get to see in 2010.

So take a look at this seven minutes of gametime and imagine Jake Gyllenhaal leaping from chasm to chasm, from cliff face to cliff face, while beset with shadows and countless ways to meet a terrible fate.

I did chuckle when I saw at Rotten Tomatoes that PoP director Mike Newell has his assistant playing the original Sands of Time video game in order to keep him on the right track. Nevertheless, Mike was extremely excited about making a film that was not just another video game movie: 'It's not a video game movie... It's a great story. If you had read the script, you would know that it wasn't a video game. It's very exciting and it's immensely romantic and it's like Lost Horizon. It takes you to somewhere you've never been.' I'll put the Stonehenge comment down to enthusiasm.

In the early days of the film's story, when it was all still off the radar of Gyllenhaalics, PoP creator Jordan Mechner enthused: 'Rather than do a straight beat-for-beat adaptation of the new videogame, we're taking some cool elements from the game and using them to craft a new story - much as 'Pirates' did with the theme park ride.'

Executive producer John August compared the Prince to Indiana Jones. I'm sensing they're suggesting shelflife and sequels, not to mention whips and snakes, sand and seas. The fact that they're imagining a 'very reckless and exciting life' for our Prince is all for the good.

Jerry Bruckheimer has played the game for himself: 'I've played the game ... it's a great game ... and I believe the movie is one people will want to go see.' After doing the deal with Bruckheimer back in 2004, Mechner set about turning the game into a big movie: 'If I'd tried to adapt the game's storyline beat for beat into a screenplay, we would have wound up with a 'B'-level survival-horror movie about a warrior prince who spends most of his time fighting off ravaging, zombie-like sand creatures -- basically, Resident Evil in the desert... You might make a good movie from that, but it definitely wouldn't be a Disney-Bruckheimer 'A'-level summer blockbuster.'

Mechner focused on turning the game into 'an epic, swashbuckling, action-adventure movie in the tradition of Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Mask of Zorro, and Pirates of the Caribbean.' I always wanted to see Jake in a Raiders movie, maybe PoP will be the happy alternative.

A fan of Bruckheimer's Pirates movies, Mechner says 'The truth is I've always dreamed of Prince of Persia becoming a movie. The original 1989 game was inspired by action-adventure movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, and those great old Douglas Fairbanks and Errol Flynn swashbucklers of the the '20s and '30s like Thief of Baghdad and Robin Hood.' But the movie has to be able to stand apart from the video game: 'My goal in writing the POP screenplay was not to copy the Sands of Time videogame storyline beat for beat, but rather to craft a new story that would live up to the genre of those classic swashbuckling, romantic action-adventure movies that inspired the games in the first place. Whether or not you've played the videogame, the movie needs to stand on its own.'

So will we, as a result of the movie, get the chance to play the game of the movie of the game, with a 'virtual' Jake and Gemma? Possibly not - instead the movie may spawn further movies: 'When asked what impact the new movie would have on Ubisoft's Prince game franchise, [Ubisoft CEO Yves] Guillemot replied, "I don't know yet. The collaboration is not built into the deal (because Disney licensed the property from Jordan Mechner, who owns the Prince IP). The impact it will likely have is to enhance the awareness of the Prince and his environment for a larger public." ...'Disney hopes Bruckheimer can work his Pirates of the Caribbean magic with this game franchise, although unlike that film, which had two sequels penned after the original's surprise box office bounty, Prince has been designed as a trilogy from the get-go.'

O gawd! that video! and I was worried about Jake's family jewels, all that biking about with Lance A. and then the sprained ankle. and the oppressive heat in South Carolina. . .

not to mention his brilliant career. . . and abdominal muscles . . . and - and -

somebody give me Naomi's e-mail please.

Oh Pia in a Panic! Thank you so much for the well-needed laugh :D I know, it's pretty alarming, isn't it! I was watching that and I knew that when I play this game the poor Prince won't last 2 minutes - he'll be dropped into the abyss and no amount of magic rope will bring him out again... [Hopefully the family jewels are ok....] Big test for the ankle though.

Settling down with The Perfect Storm, chocolates, bottle of wine and a box of tissues :) Biding my time til I get to see those muscles and that face on the big screen again, finally.

Maybe Naomi's on the phone to Jake right now, telling him to be careful?

WDW she's probably e-mailing or texting him fifteen times a day talking politics. pretty exciting stuff going on in the US of A. plus "drink plenty of liquids" stuff - and the family news.

whatcha think?

The news here this evening has all been about Obama and the Olympics - I like to think Jake's being kept informed too :) Yeah, I like the 'drink plenty of liquids' advice, and the suntan lotion. Unrelenting sun over there in Morocco in August :( Maybe we could have some of it here for our holiday weekend in Blighty.

Wow, great news to come home to after a day at the beach - exciting info about PoP! I like that it's going to be a trilogy, and in the tradition of all the great epics. So looking forward to it - adventure and romance, what's not to love. I was so excited I had to comment first, and watch the video clip after, then probably more comments. ;)

Enjoy The Perfect Storm WDW - filmed in my hometown, just like parts of Moonlight Mile, I think (or close enough, as the gull flies - lol!). George Clooney in town caused quite a stir, if I remember correctly. I should have it for my movie collection.

Hi BK - so good to see you and how lovely to have a day at the beach :D Enjoy the video clip - I loved it. I must say I'm really enjoying having Jake part of a game that I've enjoyed for almost ten years I like how games and movies can go together.

Oh, thanks so much for telling me Perfect Storm was filmed near you. It's just finished. I love the film and I feel a strong connection to that part of the world as I have relatives there and in Newfoundland. I can imagine the stir George caused :D What a wonderful place you're from :)

You have relatives there? That's wonderful - it's funny, as a younger person I couldn't wait to strike out on my own, but now I really appreciate its beauty and I love it so much. I no longer live there (still live near the sea, but not as close as back then), but I do visit, and to think Jake was there! You're from a great part of the world too! The Perfect Storm was heartbreaking - I haven't seen in in quite a long time, I should watch it again.

Glad to hear your mum is on the mend. :*

Have a great evening, all!

It's one of the places, BK, that I have such a strong pull to and one of these days I'll get there. Some of my ancestors were masons and they left England in the 18th and 19th centuries to build churches in some of the more remote coastal parts of the NE US and Canada. It's a nice thought :)

And I love the sea - but I'll take it a bit calmer than in The Perfect Storm! I like to think of Jake being a sea lover too but from the sound of it he's a much stronger swimmer than me :D

I feel much more relaxed now, thanks so much!

I definitely dont mind watching super Jake and those amazing body sculpture of his for three movies long. I just hope the first of the trilogy would be an amazing hit.

Hi Dailing :D It's not much of a hardship, is it, watching Jake in a trilogy - or having a trilogy built around him! I kind of hope that in actual fact this is all just planned as one great summer event movie and then after it they'll see if they want to commit to the further two. I've never been much of a fan of serial movies but I can't help liking the idea of one being made for Jake. I suppose we'll find out soon enough if it's to be one or three. Thanks for commenting!

Oh I love it! Just watched the video clip of the PoP video game - love the details - the colors, tan and teal, the lettering script, sound effects, the arched doorways, the costumes. There's lots of magic too, and a compass. Tamina's costume and hair are gorgeous, swashbuckling enough for a heroine, but pretty. And Dastan - love his boots and costume (arms and thighs!), I can just see Jake as the Prince. As long as the head covering doesn't cover up too much of that gorgeous face. I know it may be needed for any sandstorms that may arise. And - dare I say it, my sisters may hate me - I love when Tamina kisses Dastan's glove, like she's his knight. Sigh. :)

Good morning everyone :D

Hi Anon! That Tamina is pretty feisty - she and Dastan make a great pair - and hopefully Jake and Gemma will be just like that. I like the touch of magic too. I agree about the head covering - we want just enough but not too much! Thanks very much for the comment :D

Have a great day - with any luck maybe we'll get some sunshine...

I discovered PoP, what, 4-5 months ago? When did they announce that Jake would be the Prince? I had never heard of it before. And look at me now, I've been playing it like crazy for months and I love it. Great stuff, really. I love the scenery of the game, the palaces, the beautiful gardens, the moonlight as the the Prince leaps of the walls. As you move further into the game, the dawn comes and then again he's falling into the abyss of dark caves and waterfalls and stalagmites. His world is full of magic. And he has lost some of his clothes:) Mine now has bare muscular arms, he's ripped off the sleeves himself. Talk about the motivation to play the game;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Zodiac! I know, it all happened very quickly and now look at you, you PoPhead! I like the sound of the caverns - scarey. And the Prince sheds his clothes as he goes along?!! Well, here's hoping for authenticity from Newell - I hope his assistant passed that nugget of info on to him.

I wonder if Jake's done the research and played some of it himself - I bet he has :D

I will be playing it this evening - badly!

Have a good day!

Don't worry about Jake's ankles or his family *ahem* jewels. Disney can make it *look* as if awful stuff is happening (or could happen), but it's all illusion. Jake will survive intact and go on to make the rest of the trilogy.

Okay, okay, I think that you have to be insane to want to film in Morocco in August, but the money is probably superb.

Prince Dastan's love interest is Tamina? As in "The magic Flute"? Be still, my heart. In my mind's ear, I already hear Tamino singing,
"Pamina mein, o welch ein gluck"
("Pamina mine, oh happy fate"). I wonder if any of the score will at least sound a little bit like "The magic Flute."

(In 7th Heaven because of that thought)

Hi Paul :D Ooh, I can't help worrying, especially after the hobbling earlier this year. But I trust Disney will care for Jake. I didn't know Tamina was the name of the character in the Magic Flute. Gotta say that I'm not expecting much Mozart but who knows?!

paulh said...

Actually, it was Pamina, in both "Magic Flute" and "Prince of Persia." The masculine form of the name is Tamino. Did I actually write "Tamina?" Sorry, such a name is not correct. :-(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul :D The princess' name in PoP is indeed Tamina.

Hello!

I'm sensing they're suggesting shelflife and sequels, not to mention whips and snakes, sand and seas.

"Sequels"... what a wonderful word! I never thought I would love that word so much ;OP

I like the sounds of that WDW!
well, except snakes. I hate snakes. But I can endure them if Jake is in the same scene. I will focus on him.... that will be hard but I think I can manage. :OD LOL :O)

(I hope your mom is doing better. Give her a Gyllenhug from us).

See you later!!
