Zodiac DC DVD released in the UK - and movies to make you think and feel in Empire's Top 500 (oh, and Spandex Jake...)

Finally, the Region 2 edition of the Zodiac Directors Cut is released today in the UK. About time! I hope no-one was holding their breath.

So all those Brits and Euros without a multiregional DVD player can at last enjoy the extras - most especially the commentary with those two very smart, giggly and entertaining commentors - Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey Jr - and also the behind the scenes documentary. This includes the gem of watching Jake losing his marbles while doing approximately 40 takes of just throwing down a book. It would seem simple, but no.

To mark the occasion, here are a couple of videos in which Jake discusses the case and the film. The first also includes a clip of Robert Downey Jr at the LA premiere of Zodiac (an event also attended, kind of, by WDW, but not by Jake). The nature of this David Fincher project was that the story was all and the script was meticulous, based on a clinical assembly of evidence. No free rein given, unlike in movies such as Jarhead, but instead, as Jake says: 'You're dealing with life and death and I felt an obligation to do it right'. He did just that and gave a performance to be proud of.

Jake discusses a little more about the 'Bible' that was assembled for himself and the other actors in this video feature with CBS. And in this USA Today video, Jake and Mark Ruffalo discuss their roles and how the process of making the film turned into what was in effect a re-examination of the clues of the case.

Empire's 500 Greatest Movies

Today, I received my copy of Empire and this November issue presents a list of 'The 500 Greatest Movies of All Time', as voted for by movie directors and readers. My copy has Stand By Me on the cover. Little did I know I could have had this version (which is now winging its way to me).

So Donnie Darko is the highest placed of Jake's films (at no. 53). Brokeback Mountain is a disappointing no. 191 (one below Big) but also disappointingly (for me) the topspot goes to The Godfather. At No. 15 (with a sold out cover) is The Dark Knight - the highest placed film of the 21st century. Lords of Dogtown is at 417, Interestingly, and rather coincidentally, David Fincher selected as his favourite film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, which is placed at No. 32 : 'It's as entertaining as hell, and it's so beautifully made... Butch and Sundance is as funny, witty and charming as any movie has ever been.' It is a shame that Zodiac itself doesn't feature in the list.

And finally

A huge thanks to IHJ for uploading more new old pictures of Spandex Jake - including this picture below, which must now rank in my own personal top ten.

There are also pictures of Jake with Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America. As we remember, Diane was the one who said she fell out of bed on seeing Jake's amazing SNL performance. More than that, she got a Gyllenhug.

Includes pictures from IHJ and here.

Thanks for this post WDW and for the link too. I went to HMV to get a copy only to be told that they do not intend to stock it. What the heck is going on? The marketing and distribution of this film has been badly let down by Warner Brothers >:o( Now I have to wait another day before owning a copy grrrrr.... Anyway, at least I look forward to the commentaries and more of David Fincher.. he's a cutie and so talented.

One bright spark is the spandex shots and hairy chest... mmm.... very nice (*understatement of the year*) :DD

Oooh, that picture of Jake from SNL on the wall at NBC/SNL studios is so awesome!! I love his handwriting and you can see he said in big letters, Thank you for everything. So cool. Thanks for sharing that and the spandex pics.. ;p

Enjoy the Zodiac commentary so freaking much. Love Jake and RDJ so much!

So for anyone else, like me, who is celebrating a New Year tonight. Wishing you a very happy, healthy and sweet New Year. :)

whaddya mean? Is it Chinese New Year or something?

Hey Sheba,

Lol, no. It's the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. :)

Also, adore that Gyllenhug pic with Diane Sawyer.

First off - happy new year Get Real! Shana tova :D

Hi Sheba :D That's bad about HMV :( Tesco weren't selling it either. Such great marketing - as always - from Warner Bros and paramount. I hope you get it online though (Play has a good price) as so well worth getting. I love Fincher!!

The spandex pic is wonderful :D

Hey Get Real :D I'm glad you like the SNL pic - I really like that one. I can't make out all Jake says though. Can you do better? Jake and RDJ are just fabulous in the commentary :) I feel like listening to it again now...

Have a good night!

Happy Rosh Hashanah, GetReal -

These pics are great to tide us over until we get new ones. I agree, he's so incredibly handsome in the SNL pics and during Zodiac promotion, wasnt' he? (I know he hates when we say that, but I can't help it!) We know he's super talented as well. I still need to get a Zodiac Director's Cut. :)

sheba said...

Excuse my ignorance Get Real *red cheeks*... Happy New Year to you and yours... hoping this year will be very sweet indeed :D

Yes WDW, I'll be getting it from Play.com, thanks for the link and it's cheaper too and I can order other dvds that have taken a long walk off a short bridge like Rendition and October Sky grrrr... kids......

Thanks very much, WDW, BK, Sheba :D L'Shana Tova!

WDW, no I could not read what else he wrote, except it says 1, 2, 3 and the thanks for everything. I like that he was between Justin T. and Jeremy Piven.

Yes, L'Shana Tova, y'all! I love the Jewish High Holy Days, the cantorial voices, esp. the falsettos - the passion! OMY - I do miss New York City, lads in their winter suits on their way to shul suffering from suddenly warm days in September, etcetc.

All of the men I most love have been Jewish, including father of my semi-semite daugther, born two days after JAKE, my darling bar mitzvah boy (let go a that Episcopal goyishe mama Jakey!)

So forth and so on. Not that y'all need to know any of this. . .

Enjoy the Zodiac commentary those of you for whom this is new! Lottsa fascinating stuff. (Although I thought the comment "Chloe S. does good parka" was crude. . ."

Two forty five. Wrong time zone for shiraz?

I'm at work - but go for it, Pia! ;)

L'Shana Tova to GetReal and all of our friends celebrating Rosh Hashanah. :*

Hi BK! So handsome :D You must get the DVD - the extras and commentary are a delight (and the film's not bad either...). Jake may hate us saying how gorgeous he is but he has to put up with it :D

Hey Sheba! I've lost a couple too - mutter, mutter. I love Play. PlayUSA were great getting Iron Man to me a fortnight early. let's hope they do the same thing with Indiana Jones :D

Hi Get Real :D I wish I could see what it said. But it all looks enthusiastic! Love seeing Jake's portrait up on a wall in such company... sigh.

Hey Pia! I've broken open the cab Sav. I long to go to NYC. I'm hoping next year. I love London so I think it would suit. I'm naive of course but I never got the meaning of the parka statement - probably just as well. Mr WDW loves the commentary and his favourite line is 'Don't f*** with the white whale' - we're thinking of getting t-shirts printed.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'd say go for it too, BK :D

So good to have all your company this evening!

Zodiac said...

Pia, have I told you that I love your comments? You have a daughter who was born two days after Jake? How cool.

Happy Rosh Hashanah to get real and, of course, Jake, our "darling bar mitzvah boy", who considers himself "more Jewish than anything else". I just rememberd Jake's remark about J-date site. I still can't, for the life of me, figure out what was he doing there;)

Which year is it now in Jewish calendar? 5000 something, right?

Zodiac said...

Should I order the DVD, WDW? Is there much extra stuff?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Zodiac :D I love your comments! That was so funny about the J-date site! I wonder if that's Jake's relations trying to marry him off. Really, all they need have done was give him my phone number...

You must get the DVD, Zodiac! There's so much on it. There are two commentaries and several documentaries, but the one which includes 'Making of...' material is so good - lots of Jake. The Play link I posted lists all the extras. I like the case.

I forgot to mention in the post that David Fincher's Fight Club was no 10 in the Empire list. Love that man :D

Anonymous said...

OMG, Pia, lol! It was never that exciting for me. Mind you, I always went to shul but some years it was on my birthday. This year it is a few weeks later.

I haven't gone to temple in a few years because it is is so expensive in the city, my dad's is $300 a person for High Holiday's. Granted that is because most people only go that time of the year so they jack up the amount.

And lol no some Shiraz sounds very good about now. Especially with the Stock Market, etc.....oy...

Was the Chloe "Parka" comment from the writer James Ellroy? He was annoying imo. I would have wanted a ton more Jake and RDJ.

Anonymous said...

I don't know if I should get this copy as well... mmm... hubby is already shocked at my Zodiac DVD (only 3 sets :P) But since Fincher said he made this film for Jake and 6 other people - maybe we should help out! lol.

Mmmm... interesting vote. BBM is any place other than Top 3 is plain wrong! But then Empire has relatively young readership. Their annual Best Actor award always goes to actor heroes, so maybe Jake would win one day with PoP?

I am off to Paris by Eurostar tomorrow, lots of Jake memories... any news that Jake might take a mini break there too?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Get Real - I didn't realise you had to PAY to go to Temple? When I lived in Israel I used to take part in certain holidays but the language was a bit of a barrier, especially as I lived for a while on a Russian moshav.

There is never a bad time for Shiraz...

That was James Ellroy who said that. I did enjoy his commentary along with the writers but I would have liked a separate commentary all togetehr for Jake, RDJ and the rest of the cast - and Fincher as I love the interplay between Jake and David. But... at leat we got a commentary.

Hey Winterbird :D I have so many Zodiac copies - it being my fave. I bought a new copy of the Director's Cut because I thought I'd lost it but Mr WDW had borrowed it to take with him when he worked away. So now I have two of those plus the ordinary US version and the UK version.

I did think it was an interesting list - the mag contains several top tens from the directors and all in all it's a good read. But there are some films I just hate high in the list. Jake should get such an audience with PoP.

Have a wonderful time in Paris!

Anonymous said...

Yes James Ellroy with his horrible gravelly macho voice: he was alluding in his vulgar macho way, WDW (you are so innocent), to Chloe giving director a b.j. in Brown Bunny. Was surprised they didnt edit that out.

WDW if you make a t-shirt "Don't eff with the white whale" I want one! In the mail right now is my Si, Se Puede Obama t-shirt. I like the sentiment. But I like the white whale sentiment even better.

Protestants find it odd that one pays for High Holy Day temple privileges; and on the other hand Jewish friends totally crack up when a basket is passed around for collections in Christian churches.

Paris, well why should I not recall walking in Jewish quarter with my husband who was oft perceived as Italian or French, because of his worldly swagger, but in Parisian Jewish quarter he didnt fool his landsmen and a Frenchman called out: "Hey, Delancey Street!"

Zodiac, thank you, by the way. Any lil bit of appreciation helps in this time when all the rich people are fallin' from the skyscrapers, but once again!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I am an innocent, Pia :D I'd not heard that. We use the 'Don't eff with the white whale' expression a lot in this household. It seems to fit a lot of occasions. I should get the shirts made :D

My religious experience is limited to voyeurism and all amaze me with the different ways of doing things.

O sorry third post but i figured Jake's comment about J-date was him trying to suss out whether or not Ted and/or Lisa was Jewish.

But so interesting to think that Jake might be visiting internet date sites! And J-date at that.

Maybe there's some hope for him, yet! :D :D :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Post away Pia :D Just the idea of Jake checking an internet dating site...

Zodiac said...

Thanks, WDW, I'm definitely going to buy this DVD.

Imagine, just imagine,Jake creating a profile and posting his picture on any of the dating sites. This would cause a site meltdown, that's for sure.

"Spontaneous, energetic, sensitive M, 27, into cycling, cooking, loves dogs. Seeks straitforward.....for ......."

There is some hope for him.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Goodie, Zodiac :D I reckon that ad might get some interest :)

The online Yenta:

http://www.jdate.com/

In 2006 Jake's friends and family were trying to fix him up with nice Jewish girls, remember Greta Caruso?? She's half Jewish like Jake.

He mentioned JDate in reference to Lisa talking about online fan sites and BBM and such. I'm sure he has been on there looking at some point, the site has been around.

Funny though with the exception of dating Natalie briefly while he was at Columbia and Jenny Lewis, Kiki and Reese are as Shiska as you can get.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Golda - thanks for commenting and welcome :D I do indeed remember Greta. I do love the idea of Jake looking at an online dating agency - I also always liked the idea of Jake and Natalie :D I know very little about Jenny unfortunately. Good to see you :)

Anonymous said...

It's so cute to think of Jake checking out an online dating site - reminds me of some comic book art I saw of Spiderman, mask in hand, (drawn as Tobey) nervously and earnestly making a video of himself for a dating site, he looked so cute and the thought was so farfetched that he'd even be worried about getting a date! ;) There would definitely be a system crash with all the responses Jake would get - the guy is just a dream.

I'm going to enjoy some of these videos of Zodiac promotion time. :)

Always love your posts, Pia.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks for the comment, Anon :D Imagine the response Jake would get! Definitely a dream. I hope you enjoy the videos :D

Isn't this the cutest? ;)

Actually, it wasn't drawn as Toby, that was my own projection filling in-the-blanks, but he's still cute:

Hey there, WDW (and anyone else who remembers me)! Sorry I've not been around for ages(although you've probably all enjoyed the peace and quiet;)), but hearing the sad news about Paul Newman of course made me think immediately of Jake, and I wanted to come back here and say "hi" and send some good vibes Jake's way, in case he needs them right now :) I wanted to say this on Saturday, but didn't get a chance, but it was obviously meant to be that way cos I might have missed the old/new spandex pics(it's actually peek of chest hair rather than the spandex itself that does it for me, but let's not argue over the details:D)
Thanks WDW! xx

TL! where have you been? missed you alot! and Im not kidding!

Anonymous said...

Hi TL! Good to see you -

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks for the link Anon! Cute :D

Hey! TL! My Spooky Twin! I was just about to turn off the machine and get off to bed and whaddya know there you are! I was thinking about you just today, so glad you posted. Every glimpse of Jake's chest hair reminds me of you :D You have absolutely made my night! So don't be a stranger... I must post chest hair pics more often :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia and Bertie - grab hold of TL and don't let her go!

twistedlogic said...

Aww, thanks (((WDW,BK and Pia))) I've missed you all too. And yes please, WDW, more chest hair pics (you know me too well;))

Pia, I can't tell you where I've been, but I hear Jake's not been spotted out and about much lately either, so I'll leave you to draw your own conclusions:D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh dear TL, have you been playing hookie with Jake? Can we have him back now, pleas?e! It's an odd thing, but every time I see a Jake chest hair, it reminds me of you!

twistedlogic said...

Ok, I'll have a word with him, ask him to walk around drinking coffee or something, like the good old days;)

That's funny about Jake's chest hair reminding me of you. My appreciation of that part of Jake's anatomy truly is legendary :D Not sure what Jake would think though, best not to mention it next time you see him;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Jake's chest hair and TL have truly become synonymous :D I'm sure Jake would be flattered. Mind you, Jake's chest hair is a beautiful thing and he should expect it o be marvelled over...

twistedlogic said...

I read that as "flattened" at first, not "flattered", but I suppose Jake might well be flattened if I happened to see him walking around with his chest hair on display:D *sigh* In my dreams...On which note, night everyone, speak soon xx

Hello, Wet Dark!
It's always a pleasure visiting your blog.
I want to attend both this version of the Zodiac!
Jake is great in this movie. One of his best performances.
I remember an interview he gave to a Brazilian magazine saying that the producers wanted a famous actor in the role. But David had already chosen Jake, so they had to accept.

Wanted to see Brokeback in a better position in the list of the Empire. This film has touched and changed the lives of so many people. But he is there. He is always on lists of the best. And that's great.

OMG! The last two photos I will not sleep! I need some oxygen!

Happy Rosh Hashanah Pia and all who are celebrating!
