All this recent talk of how stars such as Jake, Maggie and Peter can influence us in many areas of life, including if and how to vote, and also on what to buy and what to wear, I thought today I'd take a look at how Jake can express himself through that essential wardrobe item - the t-shirt. Admittedly, nine times out of ten, Jake prefers to wear a simple white t-shirt and this decision is to be applauded. If you live much of your life in the wonderful climate of LA and have a matching wonderful body to boot, then a white shirt, jeans/shorts, boots/Nike mix is just about perfect and not to be sniffed at.
However, there comes a time in everyone's life when - even if it's only for the reason of having completely exhausted one's clean clothing - you want to express yourself and say something a little more than 'Don't I look hot in a plain white v-necked t-shirt?'. Jake Gyllenhaal is a man with pennies in the bank and a penchant for shopping but, even so, he has relatively few decorated shirts. They deserve a post.
One must start such a post with that quintessential Gyllenhaal shirt, known throughout the Gyllenworld and loved by us all as if it were indeed our own shirt given to us by a dearly-loved friend - the Postcard Shirt. While, sadly, this shirt has not been seen for some time, it was a popular choice for Jake from early 2005 right though until Cannes in May 2007. Jake wore it on its own, and even as an accessory, with another shirt underneath.
Jake is well aware that this shirt is so well known and beloved, he doesn't even have to show his face for us to know it's our Jake.
Other recurring favourites include the Waterworld t-shirt (no doubt a gift from Dad) and, my own personal favourite, the Art Alive shirt, from the amazing, if a little bit unfriendly towards the impoverished and unfamous, Fred Segal shop (I hold this store responsible for my dodgy finances whenever I visit LA).
Jake has also been seen on more than one occasion wearing what I believe to be a t-shirted version of the symbol from Peru's flag. A holiday souvenir perhaps, or a gift? An Air Jordan shirt has been worn in both a photoshoot and for a social occasion (a party for Secretary).
Another place that features in Jake's chest art is Texas - a look that is at its best when accompanied by a puggle. And then there's Michigan.
For a while, a couple of years ago, Jake went through a phase of wearing Ace on his chest (no disagreement there).
Other t-shirt designs are a little bit of more of a mystery...
...or downright dubious.
Some t-shirts give us advice, while others are so wordy that Jake needs to stand still for a considerable amount of time while we study his chest.
Jake told Jane magazine back in 2002 that if he could have one superpower it would be to fly: 'But I wouldn't fly to places like the grocery store, that'd be odd. People would be like, 'C'mon, dude, get them to deliver it or walk there. Like, don't fly.'' Jake's wish to fly was also recorded in one of his schoolbooks: 'Unfortunately, I was not that great at flying, so I gave that occupation up.' Maybe for this reason, birds are a feature of Jake's wardrobe.
Rather less easily to explain, body organs are another recurring theme.
And among the other shirts that stand out...
I'm just going to look at this one for a while...

Guess what WDW, Zodiac and Jake have in common? They all own a Power to the People t-shirt! WDW,you should have mentioned this one, too:)
An absolutely fabulous post.
Jakey, what have you done with your postal t-shirt? If you haven't thrown it away yet, send it to me, honey. Don't wash it.
Hey Zodiac! I love that shirt - in fact, and this is purely coincidental, I'm wearing my Power to the People shirt right now! I've added it to the post. I like knowing you have one too :D
I'm so glad you enjoyed this post. I had a great time doing it. We need to look out for the postal shirt. I wonder where Jake got that from...
Oh *wipes drool off of the keyboard* this was a post about his shirts... I can't even get past scruffy Jake let alone his shirts.
Hi there Dailing! Just watch that drool... :D I know, it's difficult :)
Great post WDW! When I first saw that Art Alive t-shirt I thought the "A" in Art had come off, my first thought was aww.. that's so cute, he has old stuff that he simply can't rid of... just like the rest of us. But they make those shirts like that don't they?
My belief though is the piece of clothing he simply can't get rid of are those green khaki cargo shorts that he breaks out when the weather gets warm. Those shorts, WDW? Are a post unto themselves ;)
Jake making a fashion statement. Now that is hot!
thanks for the great post

Okay, this is a little off-topic, but I just got back from seeing "W," a movie about George W. Bush. There was only one Jake link: Noah Wyle, who played the science teacher in "Donnie Darko," plays Don Evans in "W." John Brolin does an amazimg job as Bush. Thandie Newton does Condeleeza Rice, and Richard Dreyfuss steals scenes right and left as Dick Cheney.
^ Much looking forward to that film opening over here, paulh. The posters are up already.
WDW, thanks for the lovely post - I would like to see the postal t-shirt again but it has the look of the charity bag to me. I wonder who's wearing it now? :D
Thanks for Austin pic too :)
Good morning everyone! Running late this morning due to the automatic sales call that woke me at 4.30 this morning!!!!
Hey Amy :D Oh yes, those shorts are dearly beloved too (and much better than those camouflage shorts Jake's been wearing lately...). The Art Alive shirts are great (the A is normally like that) and I've spent much of this morning trying to find mine. I have a sneaking suspicion Mr WDW has nicked it :(
Thanks Trekfan! Glad you liked it :D
Hi Paul :D I've heard about this film - I didn't think I could bear to see a film about him until he's long gone and in the past but this film sounds so so good I will see it. I'm a big Dreyfuss fan and Thandie used to be an archaeoogist like me so love her too :D
Morning Nouskie! Maybe Jake has cut up the postal shirt and is now using it as a carcloth?
Have a good Sunday everyone!
Oh wow, this post is hot. Noone can wear a t-shirt like he can. I've always loved this last pic of him, WDW, his hair is beautiful in it, and I can see that it is, er, beautiful elsewhere too, by some of your other pics above, Jake is amazingly sexy. Thanks for the treat! ;)
Thanks very much Anon :D I'm so glad you liked the pics - and the hair :D
Have a good day everyone - very blowy out there...
This is such a great post:) He is so sexy.
I've always loved that last pic aswell.
Thanks WDW
Have a great day everyone.
Jake pics are always hot pics to me but the last one, oh Lord, is a killer.
Jake wearing a creased t-shirt laying on an unmade bed...hmmmmm...sexy is an understatement.:)
Hope you're having a good day today WDW. :)
Bye to all!
He's hot but not obvious. I like the owl T-shirt which hints at his old soul and wisdom beyond his years. Having a great day watching Rendition on TV and enjoying the sunshine. Great day everyone xx
Hi Carol! I just love that last picture and I spent some time studying it... :D
Hi there Xenia :D That's some image you've just put in my head.... Thanks, I think :P!
Morning Sheba! You have sunshine?? Can we have some? Stormy here. Jake's gonna need that sexy scarf :D
Have a good day!
He has this killer body and he looks sexy as hell in these pictures, WDW. Love Jake and his favorite t-shirts. But honestly, for me Jake's eyes say it all. He has the sexiest, brooding eyes in the world! Amazing expressive, even when he is smiling or goofing off. Everything else flows from the eyes, IMHO. His hands, his mouth, all his various "component parts," LOL!!
Hi there Anon! Jake looks so sexy here but yes, you're right, the eyes are amazing. For me, it's all about the eyes and the expression in the lips. Ahem, liking the ides of the 'component' parts! Thanks for commenting :)
