Jake Night

What is a Gyllenhaalic to do? Tonight, as if to rub salt in our wounds brought on by missing Jake, British TV is showing Brokeback Mountain and The Day After Tomorrow at exactly the same time (9pm). While it would be clearly unreasonable to compare these two very different movies, it's also true to say that the temptation to flick between the two will be insurmountable, at the cost of both. The invention of the DVD device has made such clashes easier to bear but, nevertheless, a Jake movie evening on the TV is a rare thing and one might prefer such treats spread out. While watching Jake, one will not be able to watch Jake.

As a warmer for Jake Night on the television, here is a video of Jake at the Hollywood premiere of Brokeback Mountain. Three things to note here (in addition to Jake's extraordinary beauty here): Firstly, that is the most puzzling pronunciation of'Gyllenhaal' I've heard in a while - it makes Jake sound like he is from the outer rings of Saturn; Secondly, Jake needs to watch Brokeback more often in order to get more plot details right (25 years?); Thirdly, the video editor seems to have a problem with Jake's delectable chin.

And thinking of The Day After Tomorrow, and my special regard for Wet Sam, this is a golden opportunity to repeat one of my favourite TDAT quotes from Jake - as featured in Newsweek: 'But he still gets all wet and tousled in the movie, so the real disaster he'll endure is an attack of 12-year-old girls. "Well," he says with a laugh, "I only wish I were 12 again so I could actually have fun with that."' I hope Jake is readier to deal with the 'attack' of 30- and 40-somethings... However, Jake seems to be watching such films from a certain, less-than-serious angle (from the Evening Gazette in England): 'I'm a huge fan of Independence Day... It has a great sense of humour. I found myself laughing at the secondary characters getting squashed.'

Talking of red carpets, which I wasn't really, thanks to IHJ for the new old pics of Jake at the Independent Spirit Awards back in 2003, during which Jake presented an award with the splendid British actress Minnie Driver.

Whenever I hear the name Minnie Driver, I always remember the scurrilous and completely dubious piece of gossip from that time that said that Jake had a crush on Minnie and she, realising that, was trying to fit a date with him into her busy schedule (a problem I pray we all - well, me - may face at some point). The Scottish Daily Record 'reported' back in January 2004: 'Minnie's over here touring and promoting her album at the moment and hasn't had a minute to spare but she is very flattered by Jake's attention and is currently trying to find a window in her diary to go out with him.' I think there is little doubt, however, that Minnie has long been a supporter of both Jake and good causes because, on September 24, 2002, Minnie attended a special Beverly Hills screening of Moonlight Mile to benefit the Westside Children's Center.

Other new old pics from the ISA 2003 feature Jake's mother Naomi and also Maggie wearing something... curious.

Another old favourite also made an appearance and got a hug for her trouble.

At the Moonlight Mile Hollywood screening, other guests included Naomi and a very young looking Maggie and Peter.

As to tonight's TV dilemma, maybe I'll watch Jarhead.

About the pronounciation of the family name "Gyllenhaal":

Not being an expert on the correct American-English pronounciation in general I would still say that the ITN-journalist is not so far from the correct *original* pronounciation, i.e. the way the first American Gyllenhaal did it when he emigrated from Sweden.

The last part is correct; the two "a"s in "-haal", is to be pronounced with "a" as in "far".

The "G" in the beginning is not to be pronounced with a hard sound but as you pronounce in the alphabet, i.e. "dGee".

Then comes the difficult part, the "y". There is no equivalent sound in English so "i" as in "ee" is second best.

Hi there N.N. - thanks for the coment :) While the hard G and the soft G at the beginning of the name seems pretty straightforward (albeit regularly abused), the final syllable of the name is relatively neglected, so I was surprised to hear this pronunciation. So thanks for the explanation :D

Good night, Wet dark!
Brokeback Brokeback Brokeback Brokeback Brokeback Brokeback Brokeback Brokeback

Brokeback is special.
He deserves to be seen always, always, always ...

Thanks for the photos of Jack Twist, and pictures of Jake with Maggie, Naomi, Jen and Minnie Driver!

Thanks Monica *) Actually there was no choice - and I've been watching Brokeback and I managed to make it to the Dozy Embrace, which was just a couple of moments ago.... So if someone could mop me up I'd be grateful:/

I look at this film and I watch Jake in it and I wonder how anyone can think of great actors and great performances and not include Jake in their tally.

What a night :/ Love to all Jake's fans tonight (and Jake)

After that last comment of mine, I thought that wouldn't do and so I went back and I watched it all - it's just finished, this minute. And we all know what that does to us, so if anyone out there is able to mop me up and squeeze me out into a bucket in a quiet corner, please do... What this film puts us through.

I watched Vicky Cristina Barcelona in the film festival, so I missed both!

(oh... Michelle's new film is on Jonathan Ross Film 2008 now)

Ha... I wouldn't take the Minnie Driver story seriously... make a window for Jake? I'll clear mine for him :)

Hey Winterbird - that's so great that you've been to the festival! I wish I lived that little bit nearer or was able to take some time off. I'm a member of the BFI and so they keep sending me all these tempting tidbits!

I don't take the Minnie Driver story seriously at all but it really makes me laugh! Having to make room for Jake in one's diary... he could have the entire next 12 months plus if he wished :D

I hope you had a good night seeing the film :) I saw that Anne Hathaway was in town last night - I would have loved to have seen her, I hope the film went down well :D

Michelle??

Yeah, I booked Anne's "Rachel Getting Married", but then they changed the screening to a date that I couldn't go... it's directed by Jonathan Demme, I think it's worth checking out. I saw Penelope Cruz tonight though. *

oh, how I wish Brothers had the premiere in LFF!

oh... Michelle Williams, her new film "Incendiary" is also in the film festival.

Hi Monica :) That'll be Michelle Williams. I'm not sure which film she was advertising (I missed it as I was watching BBM)

Hi Winterbird - posting at the same time :D Thanks for the answer. I'm glad you got to see Penelope Cruz, I saw her a couple of years ago, she is stunning :D I'm sorry you missed Anne.

I really do wish too that Brothers had been there in London - what a good venue for it. I do enjoy the London Film Festival. I'm glad you've been able to go :)

Hi everyone

Watching the plus 1 showing of Brokeback.

The dozy embrace moment has just passed and it's had the usual effect of wells forming right behind my eyes waiting to burst their banks. Which is likely to happen by the end of the movie.

I wish the tv programmers would consider us when scheduling Jake movies together. Can't stand all this
channel hopping!!

Good night to all:)

All right.
My interest in Incendiary: Ewan McGregor!

Great experience:

I don't know between the two of us, who is the luckier, you who have 2 Jake films on a night or me, who hardly have chance to watch Jake films on TV. Hell, the only Jake film I've ever watched on my local channel is Bubble Boy =( The cable helped me with October Sky, Zodiac and Jarhead but you know, how can we ever get enough of Jake =))

And if you got Sky Movie Channels, Rendition is on every day this week (and plus 1).

Thank you Monica for the Heath link, I felt like I was in the room. Such bittersweet memories for us....

Hoping for sweet sleep to come soon and for once for Jake to fill my dreams with something nice for a change....

Morning Carol! I ended up watching all of Brokeback in the end - with the usual result :D So feel a bit worn out today.

Hi Monica :D Thaks for the link, I'll have a look at that when I get home.

Hi there Nezuko :D I know, I shouldn't complain really - it just seemed too good to be true! I hope you get more films played where you live - I love to see Jake turning up in the TV schedules.

Morning Sheba :D I hope you had a good night, with the right kind of dreams. Rendition's reached Sky now - blimey. It's definitely time for another movie in the cinemas.

Have a good day everyone - another beautiful, sunny, cold day :D

(((WDW))), I hope you're recovering from your Brokeback blues dear...

Oh putting a label covering parts of Jake's face and body should be judged a crime!
But OMG The Eyes...

In these slow Jake days I'm exercising my detecting skills and sometimes I manage to find something I hadn't watched yet. :)
This is Jake on US TRL in 2004 :

Video 1

Video 2

There's a lot of Avril Lavigne too but you can ignore her. ;)

P.S. Thanks Monica for the Heath link. It was moving and real.:*

Waves to Monica and Carol!

What a day... off home now :D
