Although Jake Gyllenhaal's hard at work finishing off a certain movie and getting to wear straps round his biceps and multiple scarves and tight black trousers, you can bet he's taken time out today to phone his sister Maggie who this Sunday celebrates her 31st birthday. So with congratulations to Maggie, this post takes just a brief look at how these two siblings have sparked off each other since the day dot.
Working together on Donnie Darko: 'It was a nightmare, actually! (Laughs) I think it was just sibling rivalry. She was doing (the film) as a favor, and I was being the cocky lead actor and not giving her the attention she deserved. Next time, hopefully, the process of working together will be a lot healthier.'
In another early magazine: 'It's really nice but it's weird having a sibling doing the exact same thing you're doing.. At the same time it's wonderful because you can stop I say 'I love you' and then turn around and fight.'
Vanity Fair: 'My sister Maggie would say I am a 'neat freak' because I like to have things tidy.'
New Yorker: '"I think both of us have sad eyes," Maggie said. "Do I have sad eyes?" Jake asked. "They go down a little bit on the side." "Do I have cow eyes?"'
On working with the boyfriend: 'I considered that it was him trying out for my sister's hand. I'm not saying whether he succeeded, but that's what it was. I think Maggie revelled in it - I think she was excited for both of us. And we came out of it closer, that's for sure.' Maggie did visit the Jarhead testosterone-rich set: 'I'd phone Maggie while we were making Jarhead and say: 'I'm feeling this way and I don't understand.' And she'd say: 'But that sounds perfect for the film.' She came to the set and said: 'I have some notes if you want to hear them.' I was like, 'YESSS!''
As early as 2002, Maggie told the Daily News: 'We're good critics for each other, in a way,... I think that he, more than anybody, can see in my work what is honest and maybe dishonest and vice versa.'
Jake also has his other uses: 'There were things that made no sense, too. I had my brother staying with me at one point - he and Peter, they were running around the city trying to find something that I could eat. "I was really sick. They came back with pasta and steak, Saltines (crackers) and all types of things and I couldn't eat any of it. "Then my brother handed me a spoonful of tiramisu - just sugar and cream - he said I sat up like a mommy and ate it!"'
And this story is difficult to forget... '"My sister put on this play of Cats while my parents were having a dinner party," he says. "I wanted to be in it, and she said, 'Well, we'll get a bowl of milk and you can lick out of the bowl.' And, no kidding, I sat on the side while they did the whole thing, licking milk." He later went solo, singing Bruce Springsteen tunes and reciting lines from movies such as "Dune" and "Willow" scene for scene while cracking up in his Coke-bottle glasses.'
As it's Maggie's day, I thought I'd end this with some advice from the birthday girl herself: 'When I first got out of college I didn't have any air conditioning. I came up with interesting things to do. I put my sheets in the freezer. It's something that really works. You get your sheets a little bit wet and you put them in the freezer. In fact, you don't even really have to get them wet. You can just put them in the freezer. Just crumple 'em up before you go out and then right before you're about to go to sleep, take them out, put them on your bed. Hopefully you'll have a bottom sheet and a top sheet. Put the top sheet over you, and you have about 10 minutes - 12 minutes, maybe - to fall asleep, and it helps.' Blimey, I've got goose pimples now... Happy birthday, Maggie!

Happy Birthday Maggie. I just bet Jake did something special for her. Like text message her (I wonder what gifts they gift to each other for their birthdays, they're only a month apart)
sweetpea
Aww, I love and adore Jake and Maggie together!
Happy Birthday Maggie! :)
I hope we have some Gyllen-sibling pics soon.
Welcome Sweetpea :D Hmm, I wonder what they get for each other. I suppose for Jake you'd be safe with cooking stuff, but I wouldn't know what to get Maggie.
Hey Get Real! I really do hope we see some Jake and Maggie pics soon - it's been wayyyy too long.
'"My sister put on this play of Cats while my parents were having a dinner party," he says. "I wanted to be in it, and she said, 'Well, we'll get a bowl of milk and you can lick out of the bowl.' And, no kidding, I sat on the side while they did the whole thing, licking milk."
Now I know why Daddy likes dogs better. Happy birthday to my favorite sweet bitch Aunt Mags! 31 wooh! is that human years?
Happy Birthday Maggie. She's so earthy and airy at the same time. I like the energy between her and Jake, it's real and intense. I've only seen them talk together twice, once on the red carpet and on DD. So wonderful that they have each other to 'keep it real'.
A brother and sister acting team that comes close to them is John and Joan Cusack. I do hope to see them together in the future.
Now the 'milk bowl' story sums up their relationship extremely well. Good preparation for what was to come :DD It has helped to erase the memory of the George Galloway and Rula Lenska 'performance'.
So Happy Birthday Maggie. Hope Peter and Ramona are spoiling her on hr special day.
Happy Birthday, Buon Compleanno, Maggie.
They look so cute next to each other, and thank you WDW for reminding us of how special and talented these two siblings are.
I still haven't had a chance to watch all of Maggie's films, but I'm trying to catch up now.
I loved her in Stranger than Fiction, Donnie Darko and Secretary. I thought she was good in TDK but maybe her talent did not shine as well as in some of the earlier movies.
Hugs
Paola
Hey Atti!
Hi Sheba :D Oh I do like the Cusacks! I may never forget the Galloway/Lenska incident but I'm hoping... I hope Maggie's having a lovely day today :D
Hey Paola :D I loved Stranger than Fiction too. I do enjoy Maggie and Jake together (in films and interviews and comments) because they fight and love each other at the same time, just like the rest of us (probably do).
Hope everyone's having a good evening :)
Hey, I too would love to see Maggie and Jake in a movie together again one day!!!
That last pic of the post with Julianne Moore, Cate Winslet and Maggie looks so cool! I love it!
I hope Maggie had a great day today - spent with her loved ones!!
Happy birtday from me, too! :)
Hi Uli. Goodness! I didn't recognise Julianne Moore at all. Maggie just shines in between them doesn't she.
Hey Uli! I love that pic - three of my favourite actresses together.
Waves to Sheba :D
Hope Maggie's having some trifle :D
Happy Birthday to Maggie:)
Hope she is having a great day being spoiled rotten.
She looks absolutely stunning in that last picture. She always looks great in black and the red lipstick really sets it off.
I love seeing pictures of Jake and Maggie together. Hopefully we will see some again soon.
Have a great evening everyone:)
hi Carol! Maggie looks so good in that last pic. The red lipstick looks great :D
My evening was going so well until Mr WDW broke my Jake mug into 1000 pieces - surely that's at least 7 years' bad luck? Sob :( Otherwise, a good evening :)
Yay Maggie! I love Big Sis. Saw Mona Lisa smile (Mike Newell directs) last night, really dumb flic, but Maggie's always good.
^ ^ ^
sorry that's me (a hard day's nite, I must SLEEP!)
Sorry to be off-topic, but there are links to Jake: I had a bad time trying to see "Quantum of Solace." It was sold out last night when I went to see it. I got to see it on the second try, this afternoon. Gemma Arterton, who is in "Prince of Persia" with Jake, plays the agent who comes to Bolivia to take Bond off the case. Another character, Gregg Beam, is played by David Harbour, who played Randall in "Brokeback Mountain." There may be others with Jake links, but I'm not finished looking at the credits for all the actors yet. :-/
Carry on the with the Maggie love.
Yay!
My evening was going so well until Mr WDW broke my Jake mug into 1000 pieces
I'll order another set. Btw the Swoff salad bowl came in. it will look lovely with your Freeman frittata pan. Do you need any more Jake cake plates?
Oh noooo! Poor WDW with a broken Jake mug!!
But LOL at WDW's jakeware saleslady... Christmas is coming, you will make loads of money! A Jake cake plate for me, please! ;)
LOL at Swoff salad bowl. Is that a helmet? :D
Sorry about your Jake mug, WDW. Was it a Freudian slip from Mr WDW?
Thanks for the Maggie post!
Good morning everyone! Monday and no Jake mug for my morning cuppa :(
Hey Pia :D I do like seeing Mona Lisa Smile - I like to see Maggie and Kirsten acting togather and I'm a Julie Walters fan - the film itself is just a bit... can't put my finger on it.
Hi Paul! Glad you got to see Quantum in the end. I didn't realise that was Randall, I thought he looked familiar.
Good morning my Jakeware Saleslady :D Looks like I'm going to have to get a full order in... You'll do good business!
Morning Uli! I know, it's a sad day...
Hey Jannis! Swoff saladbowl helmet! Wouldn't the lettuce get in his eyes? Mr WDW says he didn't do it on purpose but now has strict orders to get down to the local paint your plate shop and do me a new one. I worry about the design though... :/
Have a good day everyone!
The moment when Maggie's character hugs Kirsten's character (or is it someone else? I can't remember who played what) is the most magical moment in "Mona Lisa Smile." It makes me happy to have seen the movie, whatever its other flaws might have been. I savor these special moments, like the sun coming up at the end of "City of Ember."
Yes I loved that scene best, too, Paul.
Hi Paul :) I love that bit too. You're right, that film, no matter its flaws, has is warm spots. On the whole, I really enjoy it.
Waves to Pia :D
