Remember, remember the 5th of November...

November 5 is Bonfire Night (aka Guy Fawkes Night) in Britain - the night when, traditionally, we stand in a cold dark field and burn an effigy or Guy on a big bonfire, while watching a firework display (dodging the sticks from the rockets as they fall back to earth), eating jacket potatoes wrapped in foil and drinking hot mulled wine.

The celebrations tonight mark the day when, back in 1605, Guy Fawkes and his cohorts attempted to blow up Parliament and the king by filling the cellars of Westminster with 36 barrels of gunpowder and setting them alight when King James arrived to open Parliament. They were rumbled and suffered terrible fates. As a result, even now, each year when the monarch arrives for the state opening of Parliament, a search is made of the cellars for rogues with their lit tapers.

Although democracy was an ill-developed concept back in early 17th-century Britain, this plot by Guy has become synonymous with undermining democracy itself. And it is so fitting that, on this day in 2008, we have seen democracy reassert itself with a force fit to send the blood rushing through our veins in sheer joy and relief that change has come - and all because every vote counts.

Prince Jake

Tomorrow night, there is every chance that Prince Dastan - that's Jake Gyllenhaal to you and me - will make an appearance on Entertainment Tonight. It's not possible for me to describe to you just how excited I am by the prospect so I'll leave that to your imagination... But it's a lot.

It looks like the publicity for Prince of Persia is beginning to snowball (snow sounds odd in this Persian context, but never mind) and I think that this is one project that we can count on Disney pushing to the front of our minds over the next 18 months or so. This enjoyable blog account, by a Disney reporter, describes his visit, and that of other journalists, to the set of PoP at Pinewood. 'The most exciting thing I've done here at Disney so far...for two days I went on a set visit to Pinewood Studios just outside of London where they are filming Prince of Persia. I got to tour the sets, see the costumes and weapons, watch them film a couple of scenes and do some stunts, as well as conduct a group interview with Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley, Jerry Bruckheimer and tons of other people working on the film! All the other journalists were cool and matter of fact, but it's my first time so I'm still pretty star struck and excited!'

'Oh and I got to hold the Dagger of Time for a good whole five minutes. I didn't want to put it down, I kept sidling back and picking it up again as discreetly as I could. It was the hero version, the proper heavy metal one used for closeups. It does look like the one in game and is absolutely gorgeous!'

This great account suggests that there will be reports from the set in the time to come, just to make sure we're all ready for May 2010. I just hope we see and hear the fruits of these set visits soon (and it all bodes well for those DVD extras...!)

Hi WDW, thank you for this post, it was interesting reading about your "Bonfire Night"! And btw I love jacket potatoes, I ate them when I was in Norwich years ago, loooved them :P

And I'm so looking forward to seeing the PoP tv special myself; I do hope that - for the sake of promotion - there's going to be plenty of such tv specials during the next year, like some sort of fix to calm down our very long wait :D

Time to switch everything off here, we've been having a heavy thunderstorm for the last 3 hours :-/ and it's getting worse :(

'night everyone :)

Good night, Wet Dark!
Like you, I'm anxious to see the first pictures of Jake as the Prince.
I was reading the review of the script and thought the story interesting. It will not be a Batman Dark Night, but it seems like fun.

I'm very happy with the victory of Barack Obama.:)
Thanks to all Americans who voted for Obama.

Congratulations Barack Obama

Hi all,

Ecstatic about our President Elect Obama here in the US; but reminded of much change that is still needed by the passage of Prop 8 in CA. So mixed feelings today, but mostly happiness and hope for the future.

Enjoy Bonfire Night and Guy Fawkes Night - I love British history. On Halloween some of our neighbors had small bonfires, and it was fun. All this talk about getting lost in Harrod's reminded me, not only did I lose my favorite gloves in Harrod's, but one time I also left my purse in a London taxicab! It was returned to me in tact, and I was so grateful. I've always loved the UK, such pleasant experiences and such lovely people, and such wonderful tradition. Can't wait to visit again someday. I'm no longer so prone to losing things.

Also, I peeked over at IHJ and they've got Moonlight Mile stills, one of which is, I think, my hometown. I hope we see Jake on ET too. :)

Hi WDW, I hope you record the ET special, maybe post a link?:)

Ah, to hold the dagger of time for a moment...

Hi Good Girl :D I can hear fireworks going off everywhere out there tonight :) I suspect we will get so much publicity about PoP over the coming months - the real upseide to Jake being involved in a Disney movie. A whole new experience for Jake too :) Take care in the storm... x

Hey there Monica! It sounds like a lot of fun - I can't wait to see Jake running around, I've always enjoyed those action scenes in TDAT.

Oh, definitely, big congratulations to Obama and all those who gave him their vote.

Hey anon :) Posting at the same time. You are very right. The Obama vote shows how far things have come but Prop 8 shouts out just how far there still is to go. But one has to think this means hope.

Ooh, I'm glad you got your purse back from a blackcab. Thanks so much for all your kind words about the UK - I'm glad you want to come back :D

Hey Zodiac! It'll be ok. I can't see ET myself as I'm in the UK but I've spoken to Stephanie at IHJ this evening and it's all uder control. We must blow her lots of kisses *) Can't wait to see it!

"maybe all of life's questions come down to this: do you want to be a small part of something tremendous, or do you want to be a large part of something small?"

love this blogger's quote!

almost as good as Obama quoting Martin Luther King quoting the ole Yankee abolitionist Theodore Parker of MASSACHUSETTS - "the moral arc of the universe tends towards justice. . ."

Prop 8 - there's still work to be done! There are alot of people who simply dont have a clue about civil rights for GLBT folks -

Remember. remeber "the moral arc of the universe" etcetcetc.

Havent stopped weepin' with joy.

Hey Pia! It is marvellous. Lots of work to do but steps taken in the right direction. Has to make the heart sing.

I wonder if Jake (if he is still in England and didn't go back to morocco) is going to be there with you guys. it sounds like fun we have something called the 'burning man' and from what I heard Heath went to that.

have fun!

Good morning everyone!

Loving Jake is so educational: You learn about British history! :) Thank you, WDW! I hope you didn't only hear the fireworks yesterday, but also got to see some nice ones!

Regarding the promotion for PoP and the fact that we might become plenty of that till it starts on the one hand makes me happy, cause, well, we will get to see Jake even in the long break when there will be no new movie of him coming out, but on the other hand this will involve him into that big machinery that I would have loved for him to stay out of... (wondering again, if this was an acceptable sentence, English grammar wise, I mean... LOL). And just imagine PoP will be a horrible movie and a total flop (I hope not, but hell, you never know...) - somehow I feel that if there is this big promotion machinery running for something that turns out to be a total flop, everybody involved might look just so ridiculous afterwards... :-/
Shit, what's wrong with me this morning?? Sorry, I don't want to sound so negative, I guess I am just getting a bit scared for our boy! (well, man - not boy. But when I feel so protective, then I still think of him as "our boy"... You know, all those motherly feelings, that I am sure you all have, too... *winks* LOL!)

A good day for everyone and special hugs for weeping yankee doodle pia!!!
Still happy about Obama, but yeah, the whole Prop 8 thing (and similar props in the other states) is just so fucked up and makes on sense at all... :(

Good morning everyone! Is it Friday yet...?

Hi Trekfan! I find all these rituals so scary. The best thing about Bonfire Night is wrapping up and feeling the warmth of the fire (and I love playing with the sparklers :D). I wonder if Jake went to a display or just listened to the fireworks outside, as I did.

Morning Uli :D I know what you mean, I feel very protective of Jake too - all those maternal instincts bubbling over ;D I'm sure it won't be a terrible movie and I can't wait to see Jake and Gemma onscreen together. here's hoping no election specials get in the way of the ET screening tonight - maybe they should have held the election last week?!

Have a lovely day everyone :D

Thanks WDW for this interesting lesson in English history and traditions. The things I've learnt because of Jake...:)

Uli, I share your worries about what may happen to Jake if this PoP movie will be a flop, in fact I think that Jake is having a big opportunity to be A-list star with this one but he is taking a huge risk all the same.
But I also think that a talented actor and a gorgeous man like Jake has to have the guts to take risks...

Oh and I'm excited and a little bit anxious too to watch Prince Jake in action!
Thank you Stephanie and WDW for feeding some new Jake to us all after this endless starvation...

A good day to everyone.:)

I watched the fireworks from my car on the Oxford ring road, where I was sat for over an hour. :(. I'm only on it for 4 miles. *grump*.

Yesterday was still a good day though. Except for Prop 8. What a blow. :(

I guess making a blockbuster is always a risk and I expect Jake is making a lot of compromises to get where he wants to be - same for anyone with ambition. Good luck to him.

It's easy to keep an image of cool actor when you are all for independent or smaller films. Being part of the big thing is risky. It takes a strong man with balls! Well...sounds like our boy. ;)

Thanks WDW for this delicious post.

God Bless America, God Bless and Protect President Elect Obama and his family! What a wonderful outcome and, hopefully, the start on the road to a better life for all of us,wherever we live!

Such a shame about the Prop 8 vote. Maybe the Obama effect wil change hearts and minds in time and humanity will prevail re Prop 8 and so much else. Let's hope so!

Have always had grave doubts about the Pop thing - hope Jake on ET tonight proves me wrong!

Jeez...I commented on the wrong post!!!

I was forgetting something.

My personal trainer saw this blog opened on my computer screen this morning. He said: "ew...ugly guy!"
He was obviously kidding, but I could not help myself from daring him.
"Ok...I don't think you can built a body like this. How long do you think?"
He tried 1 year, I refused. I told him it took Jake 3 months to become Jarhead.

So now the boy is angry! He promised me he will look like Jake in 6 months. Ha! I doubt!

(don't ask me why I'm torturing the poor kid...he has nothing else to do. Besides, a personal trainer should actually have muscles! It will help him.)

Hopeful/disappointed, I confess PoP is the kind of film that does not take me out of my house. But my son, who is 24, used to play Prince of Persia a lot, and he can't wait for the film. I have serious doubts, but a lot of people don't.

(something tells me my poor English is vanishing today.)

Phew! Home... I do think work is rather overrated.

Hi Xenia! I do agree that an actor has to take risks and PoP was just so unexpected - I will be more than ready to see the results in 2010. I am really happy though to see Jake as part of such a big project with him at its centre, and all the publicity we're going to get.

I went to the calendar stall today where I've bought Jake calendars for the last 3 years only to find that they've discontinued Jake calendars there. I thought to myself that after PoP there's no way they'll be discontinuing Jake again...

Ruby, that's pants! Oxford traffic... :( We should have gone out instead :D

Thanks Monica! That sounds like our boy, for sure. Sigh :) I read your other comment! I'm a videogamer myself (or was when I had the time before doing this blog) and I was excited to see Jake attached to a game that really is classy. It intrigues me. Look like Jake in 6 months? Hmmm, maybe not :D

Hi Hopeful/Disappointed :) Prop 8 is incredible. But the whole election of Obama has got to fill one with hope that things will change. But, thinking back to UK elections of the past, it always takes longer than you think. I hope you won't be disappointed with Pop :D

Have a great evening everyone!

Hello WDW & all, I'm just so happy about the Obama election I still sometimes think it's still a dream...

And seeing Jesse Jackson in tears at the Obama victory speech made my eyes a little teary too...

Despite the not encouraging Prop 8 news, I still hope the new administration will push forward a civil rights agenda as we never dared to hope in the past 8 years...

I'll be watching the (belated) Guy Fawkes fireworks tonight here in London from the river near Putney/Fulham (Bishops Park). And it's supposed to be a dry and mild night.

Cheers
Paola
