The TDAT set - we learnt to recognise each other by the colour of our parkas

One thing about doing a big summer blockbuster is that its publicity can take an actor on a tour of the world - thanks to new old pics from IHJ we can see Jake Gyllenhaal, Roland Emmerich, Emmy Rossum and Dennis Quaid at the Tokyo premiere of the Day After Tomorrow, which took place at the Virgin Cinema in the Roppongi Hills Building on May 31, 2004. I've always liked these pictures and it's good to see more of them (I think I like to see Jake holding a bunch of flowers).

In this video, Jake, Emmy Rossum and Dennis Quaid discuss The Day After Tomorrow and what it was like working with blue screens and a whole lot of weather.

The undertaking of this film was a serious business, requiring lengthy discussions of its message 'Every day. We got together. We had meetings in the basement at Columbia University [laughs]. No, I think first and foremost we were all in it because we just wanted to make a lot [of money]. No ... [laughs again]. Whenever I would get down, or I'd be having a hard time, or I'd be in the middle of nowhere in the cold in Montreal, I'd always say to myself stuff like "At least this movie has something to say." ... I don't think it was, like, conscious. ... But ... we think it's an issue that's really important.'

'Every day we got together and discussed it (laughs). No, I think for me, whenever I would get down or I'd be having a hard time or I'd be in the middle of nowhere in the cold in Montreal I'd always say to myself, 'At least this movie has something to say. I don't this it was conscious in us, looking at the monitor and being like, 'did you get that minority in there?' but we all think it's an issue that's really important.'

When in Japan for the premiere, it was a theme that the cataclysmic weather of TDAT was as nothing compared to the winter chill of Montreal: 'Most of "Day After" was filmed in freezing temperatures in Montreal. "It was cold inside the stages, it was cold outside, it was cold as hell at night," said Quaid. "We couldn't escape from it. It got to the point where we learned to recognize people not by their faces but by the color of their parkas." Of course, with all the special effects, most of the time, the actors were called upon to react to fake wind, rain and waves. "I enjoyed it, but it does get to you after awhile," said Gyllenhaal. In any case, the cast and crew have all had enough of the cold to last them for awhile. So if there should be an instant ice age, Emmerich said you can look for him in Mexico, while Quaid said he'll be holed up somewhere with the book "Survival for Dummies."'

The premieres took place in the the more clement month of May, but that didn't stop the filmmakers from bringing sticky snow to the red carpet - as can be seen in this video of Emmy Rossum, Gerard Butler and Roland Emmerich in London.

Ah, come on Jake! I live 2 hours away from Montréal and I know winter in Québec can be rough sometimes but the way you always complain about how cold it was in your interviews makes you look like a wuss. :) You should have called me, I would have found a way (I can think of several actually) to warm you up ;)

Great post WDW! I love reading about Jake in Montréal. I think that's the closest to me he's ever been, although I didn't know he existed at the time. I had seen him in City Slickers but that doesn't count.

He should come back to Québec in summer, I'm sure he would love it here and I'd be more than happy to welcome him in my humble home. :)

Hi Olympia! So glad you liked the post. Oh, I love Canada. Jake should definitely go there in the summer. It amused me that in Toronto when it was so, so hot Jake was wearing a jacket and a sweater. He remembers how chilly he was back there in Montreal :D You live in a lovely place!

How beautiful and CUTE he is in the pictures with a brown suit! *dies*

Sometimes it's too much for my poor weak heart.

Hi Zodiac :) These are just beautiful pictures. I can't wait to see Jake out promoting a film again.

I love Jake's look in that TDAT promotion period... simply gorgeous and he seemed to be enjoying the attention and the popularity of the film!

Did I tell you that I first found Jake attractive during that scene in TDAT where he was drinking milk in the kitchen? I think he brought out the Mrs Robinson in me... lol. Although it took Jack Twist to finally seal the deal :P

Lovely post again! Hope you are feeling better this evening.

I'm with Jake on the subject of cold. If that makes me a wuss too, then at least I'll be in with Jake and the other wusses ;-) Not bad company! :-)

I went to Quebec in the Spring, and thought it was the most beautiful city I'd ever seen (still do). The University of Quebec has a lot of underground tunnels so the students don't have to go outside to go to class.

I have a co-worker who grew up in California. She says it's snowing now in the town where she grew up.

Great post WDW. I love these pictures. Had a disasterous day at work so these pictures have put a smile on my face:)

I can't wait to see Jake out promoting a movie again aswell. The sooner the better. Looking forward to new interviews and pictures.

Glad your feeling better WDW. Have a great evening everyone:)

Great commentary, WDW, but could you place this in time? Was he already on the set of Brokeback and he had to leave? When did he actually filmed Brokeback Mountain?

Word verification is "sweeking" me. ;)

Glad to know you feel better today, WDW.:)

I like beautiful and cute Jake at the TDAT Tokio premiere but I also like him looking beautiful and sexy at the 2007 Baftas red carpet. I like it a lot.
And yeah, we need more red carpets for Jake, please, just to, you know, better compare them. ;)

My word is mates, lovely...

A good day to everyone.:)

Hi there everyone :) Thanks for all the well wishes, I'm still at home but definitely on the mend - and the icecream is back out :D Sorry I missed you all last night, I flaked out.

Hi Winterbird! I fell big time for Sam as well, for me it was the way his lips slightly curled at the ends and those big blue eyes, especially in the mammoth scene, so he was a big reason why I went to see BBM! I think Jake had a really good time through the whole publicity for TDAT.

Hey Paul :D Quebec sounds beautiful. I saw a 360 degree about Canada in Florida last week and it made me want to go. California's such an amazing state, in the winter you can lie on the beach or go skiing.

Hi Carol - so sorry to hear you had such a bad day :( I'm glad Jake's cheered you up. Yep, roll out the red carpets!

Hi Anon :) I've never been definitely sure when they were filming Brokeback, although I believe Jake had to leave the set for some TDAT publicity. In some interviews Jake did say that he had finished filming Proof and was about to start BBM. There are others when he refers to having started. So I do wonder if this two week period of premieres coincides with Jake's leave from TDAT, but I'm only guessing!

Hi Xenia! Bafta 2007 Jake - sigh. Don't get me started on him! Just radiant. Yes, we need more red carpets to keep up the comparisons!

I hope everyone has a good day - my word is fling :D

Hey Paul! I'm not the biggest fan of cold weather myself (and I meant wuss in the nicest way ;))but to hear Jake speak of how cold it was in Montréal, you'd think he was in Siberia :D I guess cold is relative, especially when you come from California.

I don't live in Québec City but in the province of Québec. But I've been to Québec City often and I agree, it's really beautiful. Some people say it has a european feeling. I hope to go to Europe some day to compare.

I've been living vicariously through WDW with all her travels and it's been fantastic (thank you so much by the way WDW for sharing them with us!). When I read about the places she's been, or where Jake's been or where other Gyllenhaalics live (we really are all over the world, aren't we!), it makes me want to go on a trip.

Have a nice day everyone and WDW, I hope you're feeling better!

Hey Olympia! That's great to hear that you've enjoyed sharing my trips! I'm lucky to have been able to share them. I've always enjoyed travelling but the best trips in recent years have been those which have included the chance (and then the reality) of seeing Jake and meeting up with the Jake friends I've made all over the flippin' place! We are widely spread as you say. I love hearing what people are up to in all these time zones. I hope you get to see Europe some day - Toronto made me want to see more of Canada (especially now I know it can get so hot :D).

My word is ousemon, which sounds French, non?

Yes,my birthday is three days after Jake's and I'm also going to turn 28. *grins and waves to WDW*. So far, I keep getting Christmas presents from friends, next week will be a birthday presents week and a family presents week. I'm telling you, it's the coolest time of year for people like me and Jake, unless people don't try to give you one present for both occasions:) Plus, he has Hanukkah.

*imagines exausted Jake sleeping on the sofa surrounded by the wrapping paper and a pile of presents, smiling in his sleep, lips slightly curving at the ends, long lashes casting shades on the cheeks, Christmas tree blinking and someone who loves him (insert your own version here)tucking him in under the blanket and going "shhh, Jake's sleeping" to kids*

I hope he's home already. It's good to be home for Christmas.

Hi Zodiac! Oh yes, I've not forgotten your birthday :D Of course, you're far too young for Jake ;) You're lucky with the pressies! My birthday's 6 days after Christmas and I've already had my Christmas/birthday present - I will rewrap it for the 25th though :D I so love your sleeping Jake images, which you put in my head so nicely - sigh!

Just to say that tonight's post will be late due to a certain chap having his birthday tomorrow ;)

My word sounds very classical tonight - estsit

Hello Kate. Sorry that I have not posted in a while. rest assured that I check WDW everyday!

With Jake's birthday practically here, your site is probably one of the most appropriate online venues to celebrate. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Tpe!! So good to see you, my friend. I'm glad to hear you're still reading and thanks for that :) Do come back tomorrow, I've written a special birthday post, which I'll put up at the appropriate time, and it'd be great to see you here for the celebration! I hope things are going well for you *)

Thanks Kate. You are too modest to think that people don't read your posts. :) And of course, I'll be here tomorrow to read your Birthday entry.

2008 has been a tough year, to say the least. We count our blessings, and this site is certainly one of them.

Hey WDW, looking forward to the birthday post tomorrow :)

My original word was verged (boring) so I changed it for confario, which is what we all do now we can't visit colleagues by plane.

Hope you feel better soon *

Thank you, Tpe :) I'm hoping next year is easier - see you tomorrow *)

Hey Nouskie! Thanks, I'm feeling quite a bit better although I have no voice (which is a good thing, according to Mr WDW). My word is covite :D Can I covite Jake?
