[Updated] Jake Gyllenhaal in court, 'squished into a corner by a really large man'

The plot thickens... Jake Clyde Gyllenhaal, last seen leaving Peet's Cafe in Santa Monica with accomplice Reese Bonnie Witherspoon, is in court. Jake is a prospective juror for what could prove to be a very popular and well-attended trial. And the words that so many of us have longed to utter were spoken: 'Please remove your hat.'

TMZ has the story: 'This morning Jake was sitting in a corner in the jury assembly room with his head down, wearing a solid dark ball cap, a blue jacket and a backpack ... not realizing he's way too famous to go incognito. So far, he hasn't been picked. We're there. We'll let you know. Jake was just told to take his hat off inside the courtroom. UPDATE: Jake has finally been excused for the day -- but he hasn't been excused from the case. While inside the courtroom, Jake was allowed to go through voir dire (the juror questioning process) in a private room. He'll be back tomorrow to find out if he's been selected as a juror.'

One must wonder if having Jake Gyllenhaal serve on your jury is a good or a bad thing. No doubt, more to follow on this story!

UPDATE: You can see a video of Jake leaving the courtroom here. I will be drafting a letter later for Naomi, to ask her to remind her son not to spit in the street! Hmmmm.

Further news on Jake's day from TMZ: 'Jake's prospective new role -- juror in a misdemeanor battery case in downtown L.A. He's back in court at 10:30 AM. He's on a panel and has not yet been questioned by the lawyers. We were there yesterday as Jake sat all morning in the jury assembly room, squished into a corner by a really large man.'

What can one say but that really large man is a really lucky large man? 10 out of 10 for the squishing. 0 out of 10, Jake, for the spitting!

OMG that's how bad his beanie/cap/hat habit has gotten: it actually took a court order to get the damn thing off of his head!

I don't think it will be fair to the trial if Jake got selected to be a juror... I mean, how could you concentrate to listen to ANY case if you got Jake sitting next or in front of you? I'll be totally starry eye over him the whole time and the judge would have to remove me!

btw, I was in such selection once and I deliberately dressed very juvenile (a bow hairclip and all) to avoid getting picked! LOL...

Morning everyone! Very grey day so good to have a chuckle today :D

Hi there LA County Anti-Hat League!! That's so funny. It comes to something when it takes a court order! Thanks for the laugh :D

Morning Winterbird! You'd have thought justice would suffer with Jake on a jury - the gorgeous distraction for jury, judge, lawyers... If I were the lawyer I'd certainly select him :D

Ahhh, the image of you with a bow hairclip.... very sweet :)

Because of the disruption to the trial Mr Gyllenhaal is hereby removed from the jury. Court is at recess until further notice. Everyone can go except for Mr Gyllenhaal who is ordered to my chambers.

Thanks Judge Horny! Oh and yes please!

Other H'wood stars have served on a jury. Where I live, they have a "three day" rule. If you aren't picked after three days you're excused. Don't know about CA. They may send you home after two days. Unless you're picked.
Each state's court's function a bit different.

They seat you in a huge room with maybe a hundred other people. They come in from time to time and call out some names, and people line up and go to a court room where they are questioned by the lawyers and sometimes the judge.

They are either accepted or rejected. If they are rejected they go sit in the room again. This can happen a few times before you're either accepted for a trial or sent home, period.

Sounds like they were in the midst of jury selection when the judge called time out for the day,so they resume the next day. If Jake's picked he'll have to serve out the whole trial.

Can one say they don't want to serve?
Is this a police-state where this kind of disobedience is filed in a police-file somewhere and kept against you?

It was a known practice of the communist states to penalize their citizens if they didn't show up to vote in the election day, for example.

Thanks for that background, Anon :) Very interesting. My knowledge of the American legal system is limited to CSI and Law and Order... But seriously, I have to wonder how desirable it is to have a movie star in the jury (I mean, obviously Jake is desirable anywhere...) but then again fame shouldn't mean you don't do it - maybe movie stars should do an alternative social service instead. Thinking out loud! It sounds like this could be the last day of the selection process - hopefully we'll hear something later. Thanks for commenting.

Hi there Dept of FS!! I love these names by the way :DD Posting at the same time...

In this country you have to have a bloody good excuse not to do it. They make up for it for giving you a fiver for lunch!

I may be way of the mark here - and probably am - but isn't it compulsory to vote in Australia?? I'm probably making that up...

I hope that Jake is selected for jury service so that beanie/hat will be gone for as long as the trial at least. As much as I love hats on Jake, he's taken it way too far.

If I was a potential juror in this case, I would be more than willing to serve. I wouldn't be great though as my mind would be on other things:)

It will be interesting to see if he actually does get called.

Carol said...

Think you're right about being compulsory to vote in Australia WDW

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Carol! We could have our daily court pics :D Be funny!

Thanks for that about Australia - I was wondering if I was going crazy :D

LOL, this is amusing!

I have gone through jury duty twice and if you are patient, answer all their questions, you can luckily be let go. It would be distracting to have Jake on the jury, that's for sure. ;)

Jury duty is a civic responsibility. You can get excused for hardship (job, health, children, etc.)once or twice, but eventually you have to serve. They draw the names from a list of registered voters. A trial by a jury of your peers is guaranteed in the U.S. Constitution. It's the foundation of our court system.

Jake will be fine with it. It's an inconvenience, but it's also a great opportunity to "people-watch" if he can maintain a low profile. If not, they may at least put him in a private room in between so he doesn't distract.

Altho, I wonder if he could be perceived as an "undue influence" because he's famous, once the jury has to go behind closed doors to reach a verdict.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Phew I'm home - let out early :D

Hey Get Real - Oh it's so funny!! Wonder how amusing Jake finds it :D And I wonder if he has a packed lunch... Too distracting for any kind of sensible thinking :)

Hi 12:32 :D That sounds the same as our system here, although it has yet to call me up, which is probably just as well as I tend to fall asleep in such places - although Juror Jake would put a stop to that.

OMG, now I have an image in my head of having to make the final decision behind closed doors with Jake! It's fair to say I would be unduly influenced...

Good thing I came by WDW:)
Why wasn't I this lucky when I had LA jury duty? *swoon* To be sitting next to him or behind when he removes his cap. *thud*.
Here in snowy NYC enjoying Jake-verse with ya.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass! I wonder if everyone let out a cheer or sigh of relief when Jake was told to take his hat off :D

sass said...

Cheers all round:)...fingers xed for a pic.
I'm sorry Jake, but I love looking at ya. How is your weather WDW?
back soon

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sass! Sorry to hear about the snow. It's grey, damp and dark here - just miserable. Jake's cheering things up though!

I've just updated the post with pictures and a link to a video showing Jake leaving court and - harrumpff - spitting. It says he's back in court at 10.30 today (6.30pm our time).

They draw the names from a list of registered voters.

They get names other ways too like maybe (I'm guessing) utility addresses. One time me and 3 neighbors all got jury duty notices at the same time and 2 of them were foreign citizens who weren't registered to vote in the US.

Maybe what the courts need here is MORE celebs for jury duty so regular folks will show up and do it instead of trying to get out of it!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Jake Has My Vote! Me too... Yep, the courts would be overrun with volunteers and they'd have to take it in turns sitting next to Jake - gotta be fair in a courtroom.

Anonymous said...

WDW was he spitting? I couldn't see any spitting. Its illegal here to spit on a sidewalk (its ok on grass though!) so Jake spitting outside a courthouse of all places seems like a madeup story or maybe Jake is stupid?

WDW I have a question for you. If you saw Jake spit, would you scarpe it off the sidewalk?

Ruby said...

Aw Jake, that's nasty. He deserves a clip upside the head for that one.

Anonymous said...

WDW I meant scrape. But you might scarpe it up too! LOL gross! But maybe not if its Jake's, right? Jake's spit is ambrosia!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Spit Snit :D (love the name!) certainly looked like a spit to me and you could hear it land as well - ugh. I do admit that there may be times when Jake's spit is less gross than at other times (ahem) but not in the street! I wouldn't scrape it up, I'd yell at him to not do it again and then I'd give him a big hug because he'd look so penitent :D

I'm the person who, when having a driving lesson and their instructor threw litter out of the window, did an emergency stop and made them get out and pick it up... Louts spit in the street and Jake isn't a lout so he mustn't do it again!

Hey Rubes! Yep, clip round the earhole.

JoeAnn said...

Wow. It's not often we catch Jake in a little show of temper toward the paps. Still, I'd be aggravated too if they hounded me all the way to jury duty.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there JoeAnn - I suppose they should be grateful he aimed for the floor :D

Ooh my word is torsoable :)

Anonymous said...

WDW are you sure he spit? Sounds/looks more like he was chewing gum or had cold/congestion. I didn't see a trajectory or his face to the side so he could direct it away and with the fast pace he was walking if he spit down it would hve landed on his pants. I think he was blowing bubbles with bubblegum and thats the sound you hear. We all know he loves his bubblegum and as for spitting, he doesn't have it in his pap history so I'm going with gum theory not spit.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey there!! Love the name! I can't believe it either, but oh well, here goes :D I think he's spitting or spitting out gum - it did look like that to me and it's at quite an angle, but I would like not to think so. I don't think Jake is the sort at all to do it normally so I'm hoping it was an 'underpressure' moment! :) Jake's doing a great job of cheering up my day today!

Anonymous said...

IHJ has pics and the way his mouth and jaw looks it looks like Jake was chewing gum. Gotta stick up for Gentleman Jake!

Atticus said...

WDW Daddy sometime have wet nose and sleep eye but he never drool.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi I Can't Believe I'm.... :D I saw the pics and I don't think they cover the 'right moment' but good for you for sticking up for him! He's certainly vchewing something... There could be a lot of gum in that big bag :D

Hey Atti! Well, you should know :D

I updated the post again with the lovely pics - gotta say Juror Jake is a very Hot Juror! Love how he's standing :D Thanks Stephanie!

Anonymous said...

You can tell by the creases in his jeans he's been sitting for hours and hours and hours!

OMG my word is tightfer! Jake's jeans were tightfer the jury!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey there! - I'm afraid to say that I too was slightly distracted by the jeans - one can only imagine what it must be like for the other prospective jurors! Err, my word is imporn...

Uli said...

LOL, my word is earingum!

I would love to stick up for gentleman Jake, but I am afraid I am pretty sure he spits... And considering the moment he spits one might even understand it as a comment regarding the paps...

And no, I can't believe I am talking about this, either, LOL!

But he looks hot as hell, so what else can I do but forgive him?

And now Jake go and ear your earingum!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Uli! Ooh earingum? Sounds rather disgusting... :D well, having seen BBM, we all know Jake is able to spit, but just look at him here, absolutely traffic-stoppingly gorgeous :P A real hazard! So Jake'll be back at the court now - hope he's not too bored.

paulh said...

If it turns out to be high-profioe trial, Jake can write a book about what it all looked like from within the jury.

Why is spitting such a big issue here? I'm sure that Jake would never spit unless he had a compelling reason. And, if those paps were gentlemen (or ladies, if there are any lady paps), they would not photograph Jake in the act of spitting. Have they no class?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Paul! Spitting in the street is such antisocial and unpleasant behaviour, paps or no paps, it's bound to attract comment. The jury thing could be just the kind of experience to inspire Jake to do some writing! I wonder if they've released him or not...

Anonymous said...

SPITTING?!? Jake, I thought I knew you better than that!

Anyway, he's looking GREAT!
