Jake Gyllenhaal introduces and Heath Ledger wins the Golden Globe

It may have been short, it may have been sweet, but last night - or this morning - we got to see Jake Gyllenhaal once again in his finery. He opted out of the red carpet - and possibly the delicious buffet - but he was every inch the movie star when he took to the stage to introduce David Fincher's Benjamin Button. And, for once, no complaints about the hair! So many thanks to IHJ's Stephanie for going to so much trouble for us again.

Heath Ledger won. Christopher Nolan accepted the award from Demi Moore and said: 'All of us who worked with Heath accept this with an awful mixture of sadness and incredible pride. After Heath passed on, you saw a hole ripped in the future of cinema — but with the extraordinary response to his work that we’ve seen all over the world, I, for one, start to be able to look a bit less at that gap in the future and a little bit more at the incredible place in the history of cinema that he built for himself with his talent and with his dedication to his artistry. For any of us lucky enough to work with him or to have enjoyed his performance, he will be eternally missed, but he will never be forgotten.'

Maggie said on the red carpet: "'It’s so hard to really feel how sad it is with the lights and the television and everybody screaming, but you know it’s also very sad,” Gyllenhaal, her voice choking, said on the red carpet before the Golden Globes... "Our movie I think is great, actually. But I think he elevated it to a completely different place... It’s hard to be that good in a movie that big."'

Unfortunately, David Fincher didn't win (nor did Anne Hathaway) but big congratulations to Kate Winslet (a local girl!) for her double victory! Here is a full list of winners.

Hi WDW!

I'm so happy for Heath!!! This award season is going to leave me a wreck.

Jake looked good but kinda nervous. I dunno.

Maggie looked good too.

Kate's double win is such a wonderful thing. Yay for the Brits!:)

Thanks for the quick update, WDW!

He looks gorgeous - the hair is very similar to his previous Awards ceremony appearances...

And it's wonderful that Heath won - must have been an emotional scene (can't watch the clip at the office yet)

Have a good morning!

Hi Zodiac! It's going to be very emotional, i think, as the awards fall over themselves for Heath :) Jake looked great! I wish we'd have seen more of him. I was thrilled for Kate :)

Morning Winterbird! I was surprised by how similar the hair looked too. I'm wondering if Jake didn't shave because he needs it back to how it looked for PoP. Hmmmm. Yes, it's wonderful that Heath won - sigh. Very emotional for all of the TDK cast and crew, I imagine.

Have a good day everyone. Wet and windy and yuck here today :(

Good morning, WDW
I thought I missed Jake on the red carpet, now I know that he was not there. And I'm sure I missed his shinny eyes...I really did.
Hair: ok
Tux: ok
shinny smile: nope
Jake's eyes: nope

:(

About Heath, that was beautiful. He so deserves and it's so sad.

Morning Monica O :D I think Jake looked lovely, I just wished there'd been more of him! More Jake time :D I would also have loved to see him smiling and waving on the red carpet. But I was so pleased to see that Heath won his award, and sad too. Makes me wonder what will happen at the Oscars.

Have a good day!

Hello WDW,
thank you so much for the pictures and videos.
I am so happy Heath won. He already deserved it for his incredible wonderful "Ennis".
Although I love Jake from the bottom of my heart and always will I was extremely disappointed about his performance. He appeared like a school-boy who had to recite a poem on a stage. He had no verve presence or charisma. I would have loved him with long POP-hair and definitely without this disgusting stubbly beard. He didn´t smile his magnificent smile and he made no nonchalant and humorous jokes. I wonder where our old Jakey is. I miss him like I miss Heath.

Hello everybody!

Very weird night for me...

First, Jake.
He looked so handsome, of course, but (maybe it's just my perception) I think he looked uncomfortable. I'm sure he was glad to present the movie because it was a David Fincher movie but he seemed to be nervous or upset. I think he looked like he didn't want to be there.

I can understand why he opted out the red carpet. everybody would have asked him about Heath. I know that some people doesn't like it, but I have always thought very high of his decision not to comment about this topic which I can imagine it's very personal and emotional to him.

Maggie.
She looked gorgeous. Didn't she? I'm a big fan of the Gyllenhaal family so I was delighted to see her there. And so pretty!!!
Was Peter with her? I didn't see him.

Heath =O(
Well, what can I say? It broke my heart. I was happy for him and sad for us. Because we didn't get to see him receiving his award. And I was terribly mad at all the people who give awards in Hollywood because they didn't get it right the first time (BBM) and now that they did, it's too late.

and Kate!!!
That was the happy part of my night (because Jake being uncomfortable made me feel... awkward).
Kate won twice!! How weird is that. As she said... she is not used to winning! ;O) LOL

See you around!!!

I know everyone is allowed their own opinions, but I think some here are making way too much of Jake's small presentation. He presented as everyone else did and it is never easy to have to read off a teleprompter. I don't get how he looked awkward, nervous or like he didn't want to be there. I think people are reading way to much out of it.

Folks, Jake is human like the rest of us and reading into things about how he may have been feeling doesn't mean it is so. I personally don't like when presenters start dragging out corny jokes, banter, etc. so Jake reading from the script was fine with me.

I am really glad he presented and think he looked totally gorgeous, especially the hair.

Really nice to see Maggie too.

Very glad Heath won, wish he could have been there.

Adore Kate Winslet and was so happy for her wins. Really glad Mickey Rouke also won and Slumdog Millionare.

Thank you Get Real at last some sense!.

I'm really happy & so moved for Heath's win, and what a classy speech from Chris Nolan, I love the man.
I thought I glimpsed for a moment the return of the "gyllengait", from the way Jake walked as he appeared on stage?
Have a nice day,
Paola

Hi WDW and everyone.:)

I agree Get Real, I think that Jake was gorgeous at the GGs and yes, he was serious too because he was doing his own job. There's no more room for jokes when the stakes are raised and you get paid millions for what you do for a living. He's no more the lovely kid who's an outsider for whom everything is a plus because noone is expecting nothing from him.
And you bet he was nervous, who wouldn't be, he's been away from this kind of big shows for, like, ages, BTW too much for an actor who's still young and whose carreer is still under construction.
Finally there's no way to know Jake's very own feelings because we know nothing about him personally.
My opinion, of course.

And I'm happy and moved for Heath triumph, of course. He deserves every award an actor can achieve for his performance, that is, to me, one of the most overpowering in movie history.

A good day to everyone. :)

Any day with a handsome Jake appearance and a heartfelt tribute to Heath is a good day :)

I saw another Maggie interview, where she said as she was all choked up,"I get it that people ask about this, but it is hard to talk about a friend who died. It's really hard."

These people have lives and relationships and 99% of the time we know nothing at all about it. We don't know if they're work colleagues, or BFFs, or something in between. Maybe they text a dozen times a day, or a dozen times a year.

(Many people didn't realize that Tom Cruise knew Heath well, and was directly responsible for pulling together the memorial for him in L.A. on the Paramount lot.)

Often, a person who is facile with words is rendered speechless about an event that affects them in a very profound way.

Jake look really grand last night. No more beanies, WDW! Maybe David Fincher asked for him to make the presentation. I hope he will work again with Fincher.

(The GG are famous for their "pacing." They have such alcohol at the tables, and the presentations and the acceptances get more "interesting" as the evening wears on.:))

Maggie and Peter are in rehearsals for another Chekov play in New York, so I am glad she was able to attend. Stunning gown, hair, make-up.

I am so very delighted also for Kate Winslet, whom I adore, and also was delighted for Colin Farrell. He and Brendan were quite delightful His acceptance was pure brilliance and poetry. He touches my heart, also, for his kindness to Heath.

Aside from presenting, Jake had no role last night. He's not been one to hang out for parties. This night was for the nominees and for people who have big movies coming out very soon. Or people looking for jobs.:)

I wouldn't call Jake uncomfortable. He was subdued, though. Is that a bad thing? I think not. He projected dignity and polish. Think George Clooney or Orson Wells. He's one of the A-list actors now, able to headline big-scale projects that billions of people will see. The people who were worried about whether he would polish his shoes worried needlessly. They looked fine.

I didn't stay up long enough to see Maggie. I'm delighted that she is able to do Chekhov on stage with Peter. I'm sure there are all sorts of things that the two of them could bring to life together. They have a chemistry that needs to be immortalised somewhere. You don't find it every day.

Yes, congrats to Kate Winslett, who won for movies that can hardly be found in my area. "Revolutionary Road" is playing in maybe two or three theaters, all of them more than ten miles away, at a time when we get a snowstorm every two or three days, and it is a struggle to drive two miles, let alone ten. "The Reader" is only in one theater, as far as I know. It opened three days ago. It's hard on audiences to have to sit through awards shows that feature films they may not be able to see until six months later, when they come out on DVD. Media critics get paid to see movies, and many of them may have expense accounts to cover the costs. The rest of us (if we're lucky to have jobs) get paid to do something else, and usually have other things going on that minimize what we can see in our free time.

So, I did see "Revolutionary Road" (at a theater 16 miles away), and I thought Kate was fantastic. As for "The Reader," I read the book and have an idea how Kate would be in it. We have more snow coming on Tuesday *and* Thursday, and probably many more times after that. If "The Reader" shows up at the theater that's two miles away, I'll see it there.

Hi there everyone - good to see you all! Been a busy day - all this talk about Jake's hair reminded me I needed a haircut :D

And welcome to new posters Ve and Chris! Thanks for commenting.

I think we could all disagree (goodnaturedly, I hope) until the cows come home about what 1 minute and 20 seconds tells us about Jake. Not very much, I'd say! I do think Jake looked nervous, but it must be a little nerveracking standing in front of your peers like that, especially if you've not done it for a while. As when Jake talked about DVDs during the Oscars a couple of years back, he gets given a script.

I do think Jake looked gorgeous! And not a little adorable :D

I also think Winterbird put it perfectly: 'Any day with a handsome Jake appearance and a heartfelt tribute to Heath is a good day'. Yes!

I can't make up my mind about Maggie's dress though... :(

Good to see you all and waves to Paola, Sara, Get Real, Winterbird, Xenia, Paul and all new posters and anons :D

What a great day:)

First of all I have to say I thought Jake looked gorgeous especially the hair. I was never a fan of the longer locks.

I agree that too much is bring read into his delivery. Reading from a Teleprompter can be awkward.

I am so happy and sad at the same time about Heath winning the award. It's great he is being honoured but I still wish he had gotten such acknowledgement when he was still with us. Fingers crossed now for the Oscars.

Must just add I was thrilled Colin Farrell and Gabriel Byrne got awards aswell.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Carol! Definitely fingers crossed for the Oscars. I was happy for Colin too, one of my top 5 fave actors :)

CONGRATULATIONS, HEATH!

Jake and Maggie looked gorgeous, but Jake seemed pretty distracted.
