Mix and match - Jake Gyllenhaal's Proof

My Proof issues are well-documented. While some Gyllenhaalics are adamant that Proof was a sensitive examination of loss, depression and trust, others - well, me - have trouble getting past the sleepy lack of chemistry between Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake Gyllenhaal. Fortunately, the film's sex scene and the general dreaminess of Jake in Proof means that there are some scenes that we can all agree upon being endlessly rewarding. I just need the fastforward button to get to them.

I raise the topic of Proof because a) I don't discuss it very often, b) I have regular attacks of Proof-guilt, and c) this week a site listed Proof as one of the top five Gwyneth DVDs : 'While this film isn't as popular as the others, Paltrow turns in a tight performance, starkly frightened by the very real possibility that all she has loved will be taken from her. Jake Gyllenhaal falls into place amiably as a fellow mathematician investigating the elegant mathematical proof, and it is through his gentle prodding and support that Paltrow finds herself, as well as the truth of her father's life and work. For a film that deals with longstanding familial drama as well as the complexities of paranoia, disbelief and acceptance, the potential for disaster is always high. Yet, Proof falls squarely in the hands of the capable Paltrow, and it is unconditionally one of her best performances.'

Realising that I should talk about Proof more, I now turn my attention towards the mysteries of past roles that were once auditioned for and are now callously cast into the rubbish bin of fundless movies. A google message today advised me that Jake and an old chum, Matthew McConaughey, were in talks with Robert Altman to appear in his movie The Widow Claire opposite Winona Ryder. Further investigation revealed that these talks dated to 2003. Not only that, it was revealed that Jake was in talks to star in a movie - 'The Rip' - about the plot to steal diamonds from the Millennium Dome in London. The mind boggles.

Confusingly and perhaps intriguingly, the plot of The Widow Claire sounds very familiar in a Brothers way: 'Set in the backdrop of World War II, a young widow with two children is caught between the affections of two men. One is a sweet soldier about to go to war and the other is the town's most sought-after playboy.'

And finally...

As the winter continues relentlessly, the need to keep warm is paramount. While Jake has the advantage of being in LA, where frost and snow are known only from Weather Channel reports, I am sincerely grateful to Ruby for her most helpful suggestion for unshaven Jake, should he risk the wintry climes of less amiable spots. The mix and match element is particularly convenient.

This is a great post WDW I love Proof also. I watch it again and again. I love that Jake smile with he and Catherine sitting on the steps. You posted that picture too. Thanks for the walk back in time.

You're killing me today! Yet another comment from you that is EXACTLY how I feel: 'have trouble getting past the sleepy lack of chemistry between Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake Gyllenhaal.' In my opinion there is absolutely NO chemistry between these two actors - none! Jake looks so unfreakingbelievably gorgeous in this movie, however, that I do watch it from time to time for that reason. But the movie itself does nothing for me. And to make matters worse I watched Proof for the first time not long after seeing BBM. So I went from seeing BBM where Jake is in a love story with someone he has more chemistry with (IMHO) than the earth has water to seeing him with G.P. (a lovely actress and all...but....). I seriously put the DVD away and was depressed for days. This is all probably way more information than you were looking for, huh? Sorry!

P.S. Should I be surprised we are on the exact same wave length once again?!

xoxo

We have similar issues with Proof I know, but the one thing that gets me through it is that Jake looks absolutely f'in gorgeous throughout! :)

hee, just saw bbmiswear's comment! yeah, everything she said. :D:D

I'm not so keen on Gwinnie, I must admit. Although her ability to wear unfeasibly-high heels is impressive!

And what the blinkin flip is a 'dolkype'? We could write some amazing poetry in the style of Lewis Carol's 'Jaberwocky' with some of these words!

Hi everyone! proof may be a film that divides us but Ithink we are all unanimous in Jake's gorgeousness in the movie :D

Hey Gail! I adore that picture of Jake and Gwyneth on the steps. There are definitely parts of Proof I could just sit and watch endlessly. Jake is gorgeous in it!

Hi BBmiswear :D Don't be surprised we're on the same wavelength - I think it happens 99.9%, if not more of the time! I have seen Gwyneth in some films where I have sat there with huge admiration for what she's doing. But in Proof, I can get no further than Jake.

I was fortunate that, after BBM, I saw Jarhead, which just blew me away. I got Proof in the same Amazon package. It gave me nothing other than Jake looking absolutely beautiful. I love your 'earth has water' comment!

Hey Rubes! The gorgeousness of Proof Jake is devastating and, for me, that makes up for everything.

I hope everyone's having a good evening :D It's been a hard day so great to relax with you all this evening!

Hey Rubes, posting at the same time :) I'm with you with Gwyneth and her heels - amazing... (Remember when we saw her on Jonathan Ross!) I don't know what your word means, I have wylynke - I don't know what that is either...

Just looking at those pics again, does everyone wear white throughout the movie? Is it sponsored by Persil or something...

Random thoughts, sorry. You know the week I've had, my mind has started to wander and wander...

The plot of "Widow Claire" sounds like something I could enjoy! Especially if Jake was the young soldier about to go off to war...

Yes, it has been a really bad week, maybe in the stars? Proof indeed is entirely worth sitting through just for Jake's perfect form, however I agree there is a lack of chemistry. Actually, I was kind of unsurprised when I first saw it as the only way I can stand to sit through Proof is by deliberately avoiding GP in anything I absolutely don't have to watch, and this applied before I saw Proof too. I think if I met her in real life I would be pouring my drink over her head (deliberately, you understand) in a matter of seconds. She is just so ...presumptious! (didn't expect that word to pop up there!). Anyway, my word is scaldspe, which accurately describes the drink-pouring, with a hot drink though..cruel but accurate.

PS Isn't Robert Altman dead?

Hi Rubes! Whiter than white... Jake looks great in white those, doesn't he? He kind of shines. You have had an odd week, I'll grant you that!

Hi BandGeek! Warrior Jake is definitely something good!

Hey TD :D I completely agree wih you about GP - I get nothing from her. Nothing. Some of the things she says just drive me up the wall, although she did wear the most astonishing shoes when Ruby and I saw her in London.

And yes I do believe Robert Altman is dead. That might put a spanner in the works.

My PC died this evening - this is making me very miserable right now... It looks irreversible.

((((Kate)))))

someone might still be able to salvage stuff from the hard disk, if it's something else that went wrong in your PC, get the expert!

Jake looks good enough to eat in Proof and I have only watched it ONCE - that tells how unimpressed I am with this film. In any case, it's more about Paltrow's character and her family. Haha... one time a male friend commented the only actress that could possibly ruin a lesbian scene for him is G. Paltrow. Not too popular among the boys, is she? I hope she didn't try to give Jake any of her "life-coaching" advice *g*

Thanks Winterbird *) I managed to get it going in the end (nothing that a hammer and a good kicking won't fix!). I can get my stuff off it and time to get a new one, I think.

I've watched Proof all the way through twice now (my mum made me once) but otherwise a few scenes get a lot of replay and that's it! It's just that Jake looks so gorgeous in it. Gwyneth is one of these actresses whose films I sometimes like (I love Shakespeare in Love) but I just can't warm to her. I did enjoy seeing her drinking a pint of stout when Rubes and I saw her on the JR show though!

What a day.... Is it Friday yet?

I'm one of the ones who loves Proof, I thought Gwyneth was wonderful playing a depressed woman. And Jake is the cure for what ails ya - that love scene and the expression on his face, and those strong arms - just delish. :) I really should add that to my collection of movies. I loved Gwyneth in Shakespeare in Love too - one of my very favorite movies.

All of these new movies sound great - Jake as jewel thief, and I like the sound of The Widow Claire too -

Thanks, WDW! :)

Good night, wet dark!

I like to Proof and I believe I am the only one who likes the couple Gwynett and Jake.
They formed a cute couple!
Is far from being the best pair of Jake. The best, undoubtedly, is Heath Ledger.

"Widow Claire" seems interesting. But I am still with my fingers crossed for Torso.: D

About Matthew McConaughey ... he will parade in the School of Samba Portela in Rio De Janeiro!

Is carnival!: D

Monica, that sounds like such fun! Enjoy Carnivale! Mardi Gras is coming up too. :)

I also still have my fingers crossed for Torso. :)

Hi there 0:15! I don't care much for Proof myself but I always like to hear how others have such strong feelings for it - Jake is certainly absolutely beautiful in it, that's for sure.

Hey Monica! Carnival time! That's great matt is coming to town, I do like him, he always makes me smile. There are others who like Jake and Gwynnie together, they just tend to hide from me!

Hi O:25 - me too!

Have a good night everyone :D What a horrible day - tomorrow must be better!

Oh it's Carnaval! Thanks god for cable TV, Oscars on Sunday night and DVD's. I hate carnaval more than almost everything on Earth. Hate samba...hate that "bapapum", bad singers, sweat, the smell of hot beer, tons of people jumping! Ewww...and on TV, all you can see is women derrieres and sweating guys. I was definitely born in the wrong Country.

I'll close my home theater's door, turn on the air conditioner, and there we go...No Carnaval for Monica O!

I watched Ben Button, Slumdog Millionaire and Rachel Getting Married. Wow...we'll have a good battle on Sunday night.

Night, girls.

Oh...me again.
WDW, I too fast forward Proof to the good scene, which for me is Jake and Gwen on the porch steps. (But I've already said that). The way Jake looks at her simply kills me.

Morning Monica O! Bit chilly for a carnival here. Unfortunately I don't have the one channel that is showing the Oscars here. There are some good films this year. I love that scene too - very tender. Have a good day!
