Behind bars - Jake watches Reese play a type of cricket

Yesterday, Jake Gyllenhaal went along to watch Reese Witherspoon play a game that is a mystery to many of us on the sunshine and showers side of the pond. I like to think of it as a bit like cricket but without the cucumber sandwiches, victoria sponge cake and real ale. Although called softball, this seems inappropriate, as Jake and his hat spent much of the time behind bars.

Many thanks to IHJ for the new pictures. There are many more there.

Hiya WDW - from what I have observed it's played with a hard ball, it's a bit like baseball, and it guarantees injuries.

Hope you're having a nice day x

My word is inicue - where we all spend much of our time :)

Hiya Nouskie! Ooh, that sounds bad. Mind you, I once put somebody in casualty playing rounders while I put myself in casualty playing cricket (caught the ball with my head).

Busy day - hope yours is good x

Great some more new pics. I've seen some pics of Reese preparing for this movie with Ava aswell.

Read somewhere recently that the family will be moving to Philidelphia soon to shoot this movie which I think is still untitled at this point. So Jake could be popping up in Phildelphia soon:)

Have a great day:)

Lucky Philadelphia!

But unlucky Paris, where "Spiderman 3" starlet Lucy Gordon killed herself last night :-( So co-star Toby Maguire will be feeling sad, as will some of Heath's co-stars from "Four feathers," which she was also in.

I've been told that softball is a lot like the British game rounders.

Jake's workouts seem to be just about right lately. His biceps and chest muscles are perfect. I wonder if he will be filming anything in the new future?

my team sport person myself, softball looks kind injury-prone, to be honest. I hope Jake stay clears of the linings (is it how they call it?)...

i just heard the lucy gordon suicide news. don't really remember her from spiderman-3... but she was playing jane birkin in a new film, i think it's in post-production.

i prefer a even less buff jake, myself, but i am not comlaining of the current condition :)

i thought the next project is likely to be the musical?

Jake is looking cute. :) Softball is really popular here for school sports teams and local leagues.

In the city many business have leagues and they play each other in the spring and summer in parks all over like Central Park. You see them mostly after work, evenings and weekends. Even tv shows like Daily Show with Jon Stewart, Letterman, Today Show, etc. have their own leagues.

I am not very good at softball, lol.

American baseball and softball are so similar as to be indistingusihable. A softball is a larger version of a baseball with a tiny bit more "cushion." But not much. Baseballs are smaller and harder. Hardball is what is used in professional, major league baseball. Also, in regulation softball, the pitching is underhand, in hardball it's overhand.. Both are very popular summer games in America. The rules are generally the same, too. Three strikes and your out. I think you may have fewer innings for softball, but not sure.

(I have always loved the series of Jake's "green shorts" baseball pictures. He makes the game awfully exciting.) I hope for this baseball musical that's in the works, somesharp director will review and appreciate the 'Green shorts" enough to incorporate some of the more powerful imagery into the film...(cough!))

Hi there everyone! What a busy day...

Hi there Carol!

That's terrible, Paul - what sad news. I've not seen the Spider-man films so I don't know who you mean, but that is just tragic.

I love rounders, but this softball looks a lot more dangerous. Do people still play rounders? I've not seen it since school. I like Jake looking like this too.

It looks very scarey, Winterbird - all this guard equipment and bars etc. I'm hoping the musical is next! Actually, I'll take anything...

I had no idea it was so popular, Get Real, or that it was so organised. I can't think of anything like that here, although lots of companies I've worked at have had footie or netball teams. But usually it's just ane xcuse to go to the pub. I have no hand/eye coordination so I'm safer avoiding sports like this!

Hey Mickey Mantle - I LOVE your names :D Now that's an interesting distinction - the overarm, underarm thing. Of course, here it's overarm in cricket and from what I remember it's underarm in rounders. But that ball still looks hard to me.

Jake just looks great dressed for baseball or pretty much any sport. Green shorts would be good - along with the obligatory showering sequence...

I hope everyone's having a good day - great to see some sun at last :)

Hello Everyone, When I looked at the these first few pictures I couldn't see Jake. But another look see and there he was. I thought if I were Reese I would want my Man behind me like that. Keeping guard if you please. But from Jake's vantage point He's got quite a view, lucky Jake. They are adorable, I love the kiss..

Hi there Gail! I can't say I would wish that view of myself on anyone :D I'm surprised the bowler (I don't know what they call them in softball) wasn't very badly distracted!
