Lemons, Brothers hopes and Brokeback's Twilight lessons

A bitty post this evening, aggravated by the Great British Heatwave that has now reached Level 2 (the official advice from the government states 'Stay cool'). I walked past an empty hot pub this evening and there in the doorway was the landlord sporting a handwritten sign, ala Bob Dylan, with the legend 'This pub is nice!'. Jake Gyllenhaal and the cast and crew of Reese's DC-shoot movie have been following the British government's official advice and buying Rita's Ice by the ton, contributing to Rita's charity and signing lemons (paper not actual) to prove it. 'Viva DC!'

The Brothers buzz is beginning to build, although information is still scarce. Next year's Academy Awards will permit 10 films into the Best Movie category, widening the chances for films such as The Dark Knight to be nominated in the future, but also giving more opportunity to Brothers.

Empire has put Brothers into the Oscars Race: 'Jim Sheridan directs Tobey Maguire, Jake Gyllenhaal and Natalie Portman in a remake of Susanne Bier’s Danish drama about two brothers, one of whom goes missing in Afghanistan, and the woman in their lives. If Oscar had a Facebook page, this would be one of its Top Friends, but much depends on the finished product. Sheridan’s 50 Cent movie spoiled a perfectly good run for the Irish director; hopefully this will get him back on track – and with U2 writing a track for it, expect a Best Song nod too. Status: Looking Good.'

Although there is no corroboration for this whatsoever, a poster on ProIMDb is suggesting that they have seen the trailer for Brothers, that it is good, and that it features U2's song Bad. True? Who knows, but we'll see soon enough.

Update: Another poster has just said 'I just went to an early screening of Public Enemies and this trailer was on it... It looks pretty good!' I'm beginning to think the trailer might be out there, waiting for us!

A video that has appeared on YouTube and caught my attention features an MTV interview with Melissa Rosenberg, the screenwriter of the Twilight saga.

In it, Melissa discusses her influences for turning the words of the original novels into believable characters in a script and on the big screen. Her influences for how to portray love were Romeo and Juliet and also, and most strongly by the sound of it, Brokeback Mountain. Brokeback Mountain is 'the great model of forbidden love'.

'MTV: So when it came time to portray the Edward/Bella romance, you thought about Heath and Jake? Rosenberg: Well, "Brokeback Mountain" for two reasons: One, the short story [that was the basis] for "Brokeback Mountain" is beautiful, pure, very small — 20 or 40 pages — and the writers of "Brokeback Mountain" [the movie] would take one sentence, one four-word sentence, and it would become a story line. It would become a character. It was such a beautiful adaptation. I learned a great deal from reading that book and then watching the movie. It taught me a lot about adapting. But I had the opposite challenge with "Twilight" than they had with "Brokeback" — with "Brokeback," they had to let it grow and breathe. I had to condense a great deal. For instance, with the James character and the evil vampires — taking what is really only the last 25 percent of the [novel] and bringing it forward. There were a couple moments like that where you go, "OK, wait a minute, [Meyer] is just suggesting this. But let's let it play."'

'MTV: But as far as the Edward/Bella romance is concerned, you see similarities to the "Brokeback" relationship? Rosenberg: Yeah, it was just so poignant, and the forbidden-love element, that you have this deep yearning and passion and yet you have to keep it secret — to want to be with each other and to have to stay away on some level. So "Brokeback," for me, was a great model for how to structure the romance in the story.'

Who would ever have thought that there could be a connection?

Sorry about the heat wave, I hope you'll find a way to stay cool. I used to live in an appartment building that got so hot in summer some people would sleep on the balcony. I really appreciate the air conditioning I have in my house now! I wish I could send some your way. :)

That's very good buzz for Brothers, can't wait for December! And I didn't know there would be 10 nominations for best movie, I think it's a good thing and will allow more variety. It seems they most always nominate dramas or biopics.

The black and white pic of SNIT is beautiful and I love the one of Jake kissing Diana's hand. Such a gentleman!

Didn't the director of Twilight know Heath too?
I Love the b&w pic aswell.

Hi Olympia! An open window and a fan will have to do... :P I do think it's a good idea to increase the chances of other types of film to get shortlisted. The b&w picture is beautiful :)

Hey TD :D I don't know, I'm afraid. Hopefully someone else will.

I've added the video to the post - bizarrely I forgot to add it! I blame it on my melted brain. I hope everyone is having a good evening!

sorry i have to keep this short... I've been super busy at work under no air-con (ie... struggling between sleep and mountains of copies and excel worksheets)

Love the Brothers news - I hope Empire is right :)

Love to hear that Brokeback has such an effect (even though I still haven't watched Twilight - blame that on Robert Pattinson), I am sure we'll hear more of the same for many many years to come.

have a nice evening and stay cool!

Good to see you, Winterbird *) Sorry you've been so busy. I enjoyed Twilight more than I thought but then I wasn't expecting much, but I do like to hear of BBM's longterm influences... Trying to stay cool - it's a losing battle. Why don't we have aircon over here?

I really hope a Brothers trailer is on the way!

I haven't seen Twilight either. For forbidden vampire love, it has to be Buffy and Angel! :D

Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke also directed Lords of Dogtown.

Ooh, thanks for the dirctor/Heath link, Rubes! I still haven't seen Buffy - ahem... - but I did like Interview with a Vampire - does that count?

My car tax disc holder has melted :(

A Twitter sighting is putting Jake back in LA/Santa Monica today :D Uncorroborated as always, but oh well!

Me again... Just added to the post that someone saw the Brothers trailer at an advanced screening of Public Enemies!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon! If it is, be sure to let us know!!!!

OMG a Brothers trailer could be on the way. I'm going to be heading to Public Enemies tomorrow night - one of the advance screenings so you never know... I'll keep you all posted if I see anything;)

I read that on Empire aswell about Brothers. Definitely is looking good. Jim Sheridan has a good track record so I can just about forgive him for that awful Fifty Cent movie. At last this movie is starting to generate a buzz. Hopefully that means more pictures, trailers and much missed interviews with Jake. They have been too few and far between of late:(

WDW can you pass some of that good weather in our direction as we are getting really damp, humid weather here since the weekend.!!!

OT I read a bit about that Vanity Fair article on Heath and I'm not sure if I like the way they are delving into aspects of his life. I hope they are not trying to cast him in a bad light as I would expect more from a magazine like Vanity Fair. Must say though there is a really nice picture of him on the cover.

OOT just want to say thanks for the best wishes on my engagement. I'm getting married in September next year so I'm only in the early stages of planning. Have a long way to go yet. I will keep you posted on how it's going - a few movies going by the name of Brothers and PoP being released over the next year are likely to keep me sane throughout this planning madness!!

Oh, such a beautiful post today, and yesterday's as well - I love the black and white SNIT pic, even more beautiful if that's possible, and always love the pic of Jake kissing Diana's hand. Interesting comments from Melissa Rosenberg too. The signed lemons are sweet.

Exciting news about the trailer for Brothers being shown at Public Enemies, I'm planning to see it this weekend and can't wait to see the trailer.

Congratulations, Carol, on your engagement! :)

Oh what a relaxing evening I have had catching up on the last 3 WDW posts that I've missed during this ultra-busy week! Great stuff per usual!

I love the old article from 2002 a couple of days ago - thank you so much for that! And the Smile post was priceless! Jake's Smile... *THUD*

That "Lemon Autograph" is cool! Complete with that "x" of his. How I love that "x". *heavy sigh*

I am getting so excited for the Brother's trailer...it is starting to finally feel real. I have a feeling I'll be going to some movies I am not even interested in this summer just to see the trailers!

Good night everyone (almost morning for some). Stay cool!

x :-)

Good morning everyone! Another hottee :)

Morning Carol! Ooh, do let us know if you get a trailer :D I'm making a big point of not reading that VF article - I don't know why they wrote it. Sorry to hear about the Irish weather :( I hope it improves for the weekend.

Hi BBMISwear! I love the x too!! Glad to hear you enjoyed the previous posts - thanks for taking the time to go back to them. It is funny, we'll all be going to the pictures just for trailers! :-)

Have a good day everyone!

Oh god, I'm going to have to see Public Enemies now just to see the Brothers trailer. (Well, could be worse I suppose!)

Catherine Hardwicke - thank you Ruby, that was the name. Her comments on hearing about Heath's death were really interesting. As were Gilliam's - though he was harsh. It seems he's getting harsher too: most of the excerpt of the Vanity Fair article seems to take its lead from his comments, and I think he is crossing the line in his comments [apparently] about Michelle.

I watched the Royal Tenebaums for the first time last night. Owen Wilson really reminds me of Heath!

Am I the only one nervous about seeing the Brothers trailer at last? Like seeing an old friend after a long and traumatic time - always its not what you expect.

BBMISwear said...

Hi everyone. I just can't pull myself away from here after 3 days off...LOL! And you don't have to thank me for going back and reading every word of every post I miss WDW...the pleasure was all mine!!

That's interesting what you said, TD, about being nervous about the Brothers trailer. I guess that could happen, couldn't it? I'm not nervous it won't be what I expect but I'm nervous I won't absorb a thing. Each time I see a trailer for Jake's movies for the first time (and then the movie itself for the first time) it's as if there is no sound. I pretty much sit there with my mouth hanging open and then it's over and I'm like "what just happened"?! Back to the movie I go again so I can actually absorb it! The problem with the trailer is it plays once and then on to the feature film...UGH. I want to buy a ticket to the showing of the trailer...over and over and over. Do you think the people at the movie theater will let me do that?! Ha ha. I bet everyone here feels the same way! Once the trailer hits our On Demand Cable station I can play it over and over on my big screen TV at least. And then sit and wait for it to finally hit theaters. Exactly HOW LONG have we been waiting for this movie to come out?!?!

Re: VF - I have to admit that sometimes I buy magazines for the pictures - this may be the case with this one. The strange thing is I tend to do that with the gossip rags (i.e. OK, In Touch, etc) not reputable magazines like VF. But I guess if I don't like what I read I can enjoy looking at the pictures. I miss Heath. :(

To end on a not so down note...any sightings from sunny California yet?!?! I need me some pics!!

Have a great day....

:-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there everyone! Veen away from a computer all day :(

You're not the only one, TD! It's going to be so weird getting used to our Jake on the big screen again.

Hey BBMISwear :-) I've never seen a trailer for Jake's films in the cinema! I've never been lucky enough. So I can't imagine what it'd be like - emoptional, yes, and I wouldn't take it in. No more sightings yet, I don't think...

I hope everyone's having a good day - blimey it's hot...

Hi Silver! I can't chase the link, unfortunately, as I don't have a twitter account, but intriguing :D

What a hot night, been out with Rubes tonight supping cocktails under a very warm evening sun - lovely :)

Hi Bertie! Just realised I missed your post earlier - sorry about that - I've been away from a computer all day almost and it shows!

I love the pic of Jake kissing Diana's hand, it sums up something special about BBM for me.

Do let us know if you see the trailer!

Great stuff from DC Jake! :D

Wow, very interesting that the writer of Twilight was influenced by BBM. Lovely pics of Jake kissing Diana's hand.

Heard about the Heath article in VF, not sure what to think of it...

Brothers trailer during Public Enemies?!?! I did want to see that movie, now it is a must!

Congrats, Carol, on your engagement!! :)

Hope you had a lovely time with Ruby, WDW.

BertieCinema7 said...

Hi WDW, no problem at all! Believe me, I'll have plenty to report about the Brothers trailer. :)

Tina Twitter said...

I don't care for the other one at all so let me call this link Jake out to dinner, lol. He's what we're here for anyway, right?

It was before seeing "Public Enemies" but she doesn't say if it was an advanced screening or not. Here's another person who saw Brothers trailer.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone! Another full-on hot day ahead... Is it Friday yet?

Hi Get Real! I had a lovely time, thank you. I love hot summer evenings, with good company and good food :) I think I'll have to see Public Enemies too - Ruby was telling me the plot last night. It sounds better than I thought.

Thanks Bertie!

Hi there Tina Twitter :D Thanks for the links. So Jake's definitely back in LA - pics soon, I hope. And thanks for the trailer tweet - good stuff!

Stay cool everyone and have a good day :D

Good morning, wet dark!
IMDB:
The trailer had so many twists and just SO MUCH STORY in it.

***SPOILERS FOR THE TRAILER***

-Due to Tobey's death, Portman and her daugthers are having a tough time dealing with it.
-Not as tough as Jake though because he obviously misses his brother a lot.
-He gets close to his nieces and his dead brother's woman. He even tells stories of his brother to his nieces and he's becoming a better person as a result.
-He smokes some pot with Portman (who isn't a square, c'mon now) and then BOOM! JAKE MAKES THE MOVE! (of course--this would've been the PERFECT end to the trailer).
-Wait...a doctor's office....Tobey is alive? Flashbacks to the war!
-He's home with Portman, his brother and his daughters! He's obviously traumatized by the events, though.
-Uh oh...he knows they slept together. Cue the daugther shoving it in his face!
-Tobey FLIPS OUT! AND TELLS THE COPS OUTSIDE TO SHOOT HIM!!!

And fade to the title.

Hi there everyone - made it home after The Longest Day... :/

That's so funny, Jaked! The poor girl but Jake'll do that :DD

Thanks for that, Monica :D I can't wait to see it - and I wouldn't mind a UK release date for that matter :P

Hi LOL! I'm rather hopeful for some naughtiness in the movie after reading that! I'm so shallow - sigh...
