Jake Gyllenhaal goes back to work - and looking back: finding films and loving films

It may be Friday, but for Jake Gyllenhaal it's a case of back to work to start filming Love and Other Drugs in Pittsburgh. It's already made the local Pitt News. 'Jake Gyllenhaal, Hank Azaria and about 300 other people will be on campus filming a romantic comedy today... Production crews arrived at the Pitt Athletic Association, next to Alumni Hall, around 4 this morning to begin setting up equipment and testing lighting. Filming began several hours later and will continue until at least 7 p.m.'

'Around 10 a.m. this morning, crews were filming in the Athletic Association's bowling alley. Azaria was on set, and a sea of extras in black shirts reading "Doc's" surrounded him. Stand-ins for Gyllenhaal and Azaria stood behind the cameras waiting for a gap in the filming, when they'd be asked to stand still for an hour, or sometimes more, holding positions so crews could check the lighting.'

'Scott Levine, a publicist for the film, said he thought today would probably be the only day the crew was on campus. He said he expects thinks the film will come out in 2010, but that it's too early to tell for sure. Filming, he guessed, would probably end shortly after Thanksgiving.'

Memory Lane

A wonderful new profile of Jake Gyllenhaal landed on YouTube today. Full of clips I've never seen before, and snippets from interviews some of which I've not heard before, it's a delight for the senses. It starts at the beginning and charts an incredible ten-year career and hints that, with Prince of Persia, Jake is on the edge of something very big indeed.

On Brokeback Mountain's sexual content: 'But it was written in such a way that it wasn't vulgar or obvious. It was a real physical connection between these two people, and I have a real issue with films when sexuality or sex is used as a kind of thing to just watch. This had real meaning. It really pushed the story along and to me I will do pretty much almost anything if the story is beautiful enough and says something important enough. I'll take that risk cos I feel like it's just not worth it unless you take these risks.'

'These are two people who are lonely and looking for a connection and happened to find it with each other at a certain time when it's just not ok but love is found in the oddest of places. And I think that's what it's about and that's really what it was about for me when I read it.'

On Jake's films of 2005: 'I care a lot about the films I've done in the past year and they mean a lot to me. And it's a really great feeling. Comfortable? I enjoy hearing and worry about hearing what people feel about them as they mean a lot to me but yeah it feels comfortable.'

On his different way of working from David Fincher: 'My preference is love. My preference is working in the emotional world. David works in another way, which is definitely obsessive and that's what this movie's about. That's why it was amazing to make. That's why I think... ultimately, I say that's my preference but you always have to go to places that you're afraid of and the world of David Fincher was definitely something I was afraid of. And so I gravitate towards that in terms of having the ability to learn from that. David's world is procedural, this world that he's created is very procedural and lengthy and slow-paced and eats at you and it's a slow painful death this movie in a lot of ways - in the best possible way! Because it asks a lot of its audience.'

'I assume the audience to be very intelligent. Maybe that's not necessarily the smartest thing on my part but I really think they are and I think that an audience finding a movie or loving a movie isn't necessarily in the present moment always. And I've had that experience a lot of times too.'

And finally...

We're heard about the McFarlane fully articulated toy figures of Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan. Well, here we get a glimpse of a six-feet tall version. Needless to say I'll take at least one. Finding room for a life-sized camel may be more awkward.

Jordan Mechner, the creator of Prince of Persia, has had a sneak preview of the movie trailer and happily tweeted that it was 'awesome'. One wonders if the trailer will be around in the holiday season.

Holy s**t! I'll take two of those Jakes and one camel! I didn't really think they would build a life-size version! It's beautiful (as far as I can see on this blurry pic)!! I love the hair on it more than on real Jake! I can't seem to stop using exclamation points! This is so great, they should put one in every movie theater where the movie will be shown.

I just watched the profile, it was great. I love to hear Jake talk about making movies, especially BBM. I could listen to him talk all day. And he looked so handsome in most of the clips (I didn't really like his look while promoting Rendition, too much beard for my taste). It was great to see him on the BBM set with Heath. :) Thanks to you and Monica!

Hey Olympia! I was amazed to see a life-size version too but I actually prefer Jake's hair! But I'd still have this one and I'd want lots of different outfits.

Great idea about the theatres! oh flip, Jake's making me talk in exclamations as well :D

The profile was amazing! Absolutely wonderful! I had a very happy lunch hour today at work watching that.

I hope everyone's having a good Friday. I've had a hell of a day. Seen some famous people come by work on a very busy day and then the worry of my mum having a bad fall. Things are ok now and I'm finally ready to take a deep breath!

I'm sorry about your mom but I'm glad she's OK. I hope your week-end will make-up for your crummy day. :) Do we know these famous people?

Thanks Olympia *) She had a bad fall to the head but has been discharged by the hospital. What a relief.

I saw Michael Wood, who's a well known history/archaeology presenter here and someone I've had a crush on for about 30 years! And then there was a vampire from Twilight. All because of an open day. What a day!

I saw the video a little before going to class. Video with many new images for me.

I don' know what happened, but I feel sorry for your mother.

Hi Monica! It had lots of new things for me too - it's great that there's still new images to see - I love it :)

Thanks *) - she fell and hit her head. Thank God she's ok and home now. I have more grey hairs now.

Thanks for the link. I've not seen that. I saw the shirts and a shiver went down my spine - how wonderful to see :)

Thanks WDW. I was wondering if Jake and Anne were already filming in Pittsburgh. I've never been there. It's a shame, I'll be in Philly the end of Oct for a Brokie gathering. We'll be on the WRONG side of the state.

I have to watch that video

Wow, fantastic job on the Prince Dastan action figure - the face and hair are amazing? Life size? That should really be something to see.

Loved the profile on Jake, made me remember all the things I love about his roles - he's so believable and realistic as Homer Hickam, loved him as Holden, and of course Donny Darko and Jack Twist, Robert Graysmith - but to me, he's at his most grownup and gorgeous as Douglas Freeman. I love to hear him speak - his thoughts and humor. :)

Glad to hear your Mom's ok.

I loved yesterday's pic of Heath and Lily too - can't wait to see IoDP.

Have a great weekend all -

Bertie

awww Jake and Heath being playful around 1.50, so cute.

i hadn't seen that grey jacket/green background interview either.wonder if we could find the full interview.hm.

the toy figure freaked me out a bit.it just shows how (much) things are going to change and i don't like it. :(
but there's no way that figure is 6-feet tall.are you sure about that?couldn't it be the 6-inch version?

anyway thanks for the vid WDW, oh and sending get well wishes to your mom.

p.s. my word is "nonita."lol.

That should be "the face and hair are amazing!" (no question about it). ;)

I hope they at least have a life-size cardboard Dastan at the theaters! :)

My word is sonio -

Sweet dreams! :)

Yesterday I saw "District 9," which got high marks for originality. The aliens were not popular because they looked like prawns. If they had looked like Jake Gyllenhaal (who was not in the movie, and was linked to anyone in the movie), they would have been better liked.

Tonight I saw "Love happens," which had some superb Jake links. John Carroll Lynch, for instance, who was in "Bubble Boy," "The Good girl" and "Zodiac." Judy Greer is a Jake link right now, as she is filming "Love and other drugs" with Jake. She is also a link to Maggie Gyllenhaal, having been in "Great new wonderful" and "daptation."

Morning everyone! Good to see you all. I'll be back shortly, I'm being hurried out of the door. Apparently if I go into town on a very dodgy motorbike I'll be bought chocolate... Back soon!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Back in one piece - and with chocolate :D

Hi there Sweetpea :D Well, at least you'll be in the same state and time zone - I hope you have a great time at the Brokie gathering. What a nice thing to do :) And thanks.

Thanks Bertie :) Douglas Freeman, what a looker! I think Jake just looks better and better as he gets older. I missed seeing TDAT on the profile though, and Moonlight Mile.

Hey Gretchen! I'd not seen the dark shirt interview at Cannes either. It's good to see new things after all this time. That figure did scare me a bit too! I'm not sure how big it is, but the angle makes it look enormous!

I bet they do have life-size cutouts at the theatres, Berie :D Hmmm, wonder if one could 'borrow' one...

Hi Paul! I was completely freaked out by District 9. I thought it was amazing though, but the nightmares it gave me... I've not heard of Love Happens - I'll have to check that out as I like the sound of the cast.

Thanks for the well wishes for my mum. She's feeling a little better today but won't be moving around for a while.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

Wow...this video...just Wow! So many new (old) clips that we haven't seen before. It makes me think, as I have many times before, what else is out there? What are we not seeing? Where are the 'full' interviews and the many behind the scenes clips? Why can't we see them? Who are the people who have them? Why won't they share them? Sorry...I'm on a bit of a rant here!! But when I get a little something like this I only want more - I just can't help it. Never enough, never enough.

But...in the meantime...Yay to this clip and the people who put it together and posted it (who are these people)?!

*goes back to watch it again and again* :-)

I think Olympia put it best regarding the toy: "Holy s**t!" - this looks better than I imagined it would! Whoowhee...can't wait for these to hit the toy store shelves!

Oh the shirts...wonderful to see them on display like that and to see the passion of the people involved...there certainly ain't no reins on this one and it's obvious the love, passion, interest and dedication that Brokies have will go on and on and on. That makes me very happy.

I always enjoy Paul's "Jake Links"...quite a lot in Love Happens, huh? I saw Uma Thurman's Motherhood last night complete with Uma Thurman live in person...I guess the only Jake Link is the pre-Oscar party drunk pics...LOL!

Saving the most important subject for last...best wishes to your Mum, WDW! I know how scary it can be when things like this happen. The fact that she is doing well, and it sounds like she will make a full recovery, is great news so I guess you focus on that and put up with the extra gray hairs!! Never a dull moment, huh? Big Hugs to you!!

Happy Weekend...I have the house to myself for a while today and have made a plan...me and Brokeback Mountain. *heavy sigh*

*waits for pictures from Pittsburgh*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

BBMISwear :-) I was thinking of you yesterday - hope all went well. How was Uma?!

And you and me with the waiting for Pitt pics.... it sounds from Twitter that Jake had fun with quite a few fans yesterday. I hope he's having a good time :D

I love seeing these glimpses of interviews I feel I should have seen but haven't. I want to see everything too but strangely knowing there is so much new out there gives me a happy feeling too. But where are all these clips?!

I like Paul's Jake links too :D And it gives me ideas of films to see. I may go and see Dorian Gray tomorrow.

Thanks about mum. And I hope you have one of those special Brokie evenings :)I'm going to have one of those next week. Put your feet up :D

Sitting in Rubes' garden with a beer :D

My word is outch...

This new video made my day!!!
Thank you for finding it and posting it here, WDW :)))

I never get tired of hearing Jake talking about his emotional connections with the character he plays on film,

Thank you

BBM I Swear, I want a special DVD of Brokeback Mountain. With deleted scenes, recording errors, photos, comments ... with 8 hours of extra material. Still will not be enough.
A great movie needs a DVD special.

Have a great day!

Which holiday season??? Thanksgiving??? Please say Thanksgiving... I could definitely wait til Thanksgiving to see the premier trailer...

BBMISwear said...

In Rube's garden?! Has there been frolicking in the grass yet? Ha Ha! Glad Jake is being good 'old' Jake (hee hee) and having fun with fans! That's our guy! :-) I'll fill you in about Uma soon.

Just came down from the mountain...whoa...quite the viewing. I don't think watching the new Jake vid clip 3 times before watching Brokeback was a good plan as far as the emotions go. I think I need to go watch something more uplifting now.

Oh, Monica...this says it all: "BBM I Swear, I want a special DVD of Brokeback Mountain. With deleted scenes, recording errors, photos, comments ... with 8 hours of extra material. Still will not be enough. A great movie needs a DVD special." But why not 18 hours of extra material?! Nope, it still won't be enough. *heavy sigh*

Paola! So good to see you :) It's a great video and I've watched it more than is decent. Hope things are good with you.

Hi Monica! So do I!

Hi there E and welcome :D I was thinking Christmas but Thanksgiving would be good :)

There has been frolicking, BBMISwear! All captured on video for your visit :D Thinking of you climbing back down the mountain. It'll be getting a visit from me soon, too.

Have a good evening everyone! Time to open another bottle... It's a Jaking night!

Ruby said...

There has been frolicking, but I'm not allowed to post the evidence on the internet. :(

Ruby said...

I frolicked and was filmed but I don't approve of public frolicking.

Hey! Wait a minute! We want photos of the frolicking! :(

Wish I was there...have a glass (or two or three) of wine for me!

I am sorry for the news about your Mum falling, WDW. I am very happy to know she is doing OK. My own mother is elderly and has taken falls that have been very scarey, but all with good outcomes.

I saw Ang's and James Shamus' Taking Woodstock today - interesting to see how this iconic music festival came to be. Very charming and subtly done, I loved it. Also, Jake's PoP poster was there! He looks great - we're looking forward to seeing PoP so much! Also RDJ's Sherlock Holmes poster is really nicely done. :)

Today is the premiere of Batman Dark Night on HBO Brazil!
The performance of Heath will be remembered forever in the history of cinema.

Anxious to see DR.P!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Back home after a wonderful time with the frolickers :D It'd be great though if everyone could do their Jaking very very quietly today as I have a headache - I can't imagine why...

Hey BBMISwear! Unfortunately the frolicking video is now locked in a Swiss vault but I can assure you that we did have at least three glasses of wine (wearing Red Sox hats!) :-)

Thanks so much, Anon, for your kind wishes. I hope that your mum continues to be well. It is a worry... so I appreciate the kind words :)

Bertie, that's great on both counts! A good movie and a PoP poster :) I can't wait to see one of those for the first time. I'm glad you enjoyed Ang's film.

It's always so good, Monica, when these films we love reach the TV. I always have to watch them :D It's good to think that they get a whole new audience. I hope you get to see Dr P over there :) And thanks for the links! Hmmm, sexiest movie star? That's a tricky one.... ;)

I hope everyone has a great Sunday :D
