Jake Gyllenhaal to feature in a Jamie Foxx documentary and Love and Other Drugs gets closer to its Japanese release

Jamie Foxx is making a documentary about, one speculates, his career. So far untitled, it's scheduled for release in 2012 and there, topping the list of contributors is Jake Gyllenhaal. Of course, Jake and Jamie have known each other for some time, most famously making Jarhead together back in 2005. Jake also featured in a cameo for Jamie's single Blame It back in February 2009.

The contributors for the documentary include the other Blame It cameo stars, not all of whom had any idea what they were committing too when they turned up for filming shortly after the inauguration of President Obama. Apparently, Foxx had used that occasion to hoodwink Ron Howard (read more about that here)! It will definitely make for some interesting stories.

According to IMDb Pro, the documentary was filmed in LA and New Orleans in December 2009.

Love and Other Drugs

Source Code has not yet opened in Japan, but neither has Love and Other Drugs. It doesn't open until 19 November and the publicity is underway. With thanks to Maumintolor, here is a look at Japan's poster as well as a link to the website.

TIFF 2011

Amid rumours that Jake has joined Maggie in Toronto to support her at TIFF for the opening of Hysteria, Anna Kendrick is also in attendance. PoPSugar reports that she gushed to them about her latest handsome co-star, Jake. Good on you, Anne! If there's one thing I can empathise with, it's someone gushing about Jake.

Jake Gyllenhaal on disc 2011 - Source Code, Donnie Darko and City Slickers to name but three...

I'm very glad to be back! Those dentists might think they can torture me to within an inch of my senses and leave me with little but rice pudding and soup to live on for a month but they can think again! (Although they would be right.) Having got through that, one returns to Blogger to find it's had quite an overhaul. If this post appears upside down, back to front, or in Sanskrit, I will not be surprised.

This post is, therefore, not only experimental, it's also a catch up of some of the DVD and Blu Ray goodness that has happened over the last month. This is because 2011 has been the year of the Jake Gyllenhaal DVD/Blu ray. This is what happens when you make key, landmark films - people want to mark their release with new discs and, I'm sure somewhere, cake and flowers. But first, the newest film that's out there: Source Code. Source Code is now out in the UK and has received a top notch review in Total Film (as well as many other places). Here is their review of the DVD and blu ray from the September issue, courtesy of IHJ.

Source Code is still making pictures in magazines across the pond and so, with thanks to BBMISwear, here is a scan from Entertainment Weekly listing Source Code as among its essential viewing as well as an ad from Blockbuster for its digital release.

2011 is the 10th anniversary of that classic Donnie Darko. I am so proud of Jake's association with this groundbreaking and, despite being fixed in the 80s, timeless piece. I've been wondering what the extras are in the commemorative Blu ray release and thanks to Flix66 we have a good idea. As you'll read, most of the extras (commentaries especially) were on the original or Director's Cut releases, including the oddity of the Richard Kelly and Kevin Smith commentary.

City Slickers is celebrating it's 20th anniversary this year and with it there was a special blu ray release. I'm grateful to BBMISwear for listening to the commentary with Billy Crystal and director Ron Underwood and extracting all things Jake from their banter:

Bill: He had great instincts.  He was a family friend.  His parents were good friends of ours – Naomi and Steve – and we would always be around him at parties and things and he was always performing.  He loved musicals – he would come out with a… a Phantom of the Opera mask and sing with that little high pitched voice {laughter} and he would sing from South Pacific and we’d all go ‘he’s gay, he’s gotta be gay’! {laughter} So I brought him into Ron and Ron had a great meeting with him and came out and said ‘this kids loaded, he’s like amazing’.  And that’s how Jake Gyllenhaal ended up being in the movie.
Ron:  His parents did – they wanted to really craft his career – or not just his career but his life too.
Billy:  He also was a great athlete, still is I’m sure.
Jake popping his shoulder (I just can't look...).
Billy:  Look at him!
Ron: He would do this! {laughter}
Ron:  I got all these toys and things for him to use in the scene and he said ‘I can…look at…this is what I can do’!  It was amazing what he could just do with his body!

Of course, I shouldn't forget the other Jake DVD and blu ray that came out in 2011 - Love and Other Drugs. IHJ has posted some new old stills from Jake's movies including this cracker from Love and Other Drugs of Jake and Oliver Platt.

Anne Hathaway praises Jake Gyllenhaal and a WDW Coastal Interlude

Anne Hathaway's been talking about Jake Gyllenhaal and I'm sure it'll come as a surprise to no-one - or at least to those who've witnessed just a moment or two of that Love and Other Drugs chemistry - Anne has nothing but praise for her twotimes co-star: 'I know actors always say this about each other but he really is lovely. I worked with him on 'Brokeback Mountain' and then five years later on 'Love and Other Drugs'; he was a great guy then and still is. He's a real person.'

Talking of movies, my non-spoilery review of Super 8 is now published at Bleeding Cool.

A WDW Coastal Interlude

For the next part of the post, I beg your indulgence because it's Interlude Time. The promise of those rarest of summer gifts - sunshine and heat - persuaded Mr WDW and I to take off for the most beautiful south western reaches of England. We set off for Lime Regis (I have a real weakness for The French Lieutenant's Woman and Persuasion) but in the end we went a couple of counties further on to northern Cornwall. I am now back, complete with a fetchingly erratic sunburn pattern, an empty wallet, and a full camera.

Lyme Regis, possibly the most beautiful and historic seaside town imaginable - unfortunately I didn't discover a new species of dinosaur.

Branscombe in Devon is one of the most beautiful villages I've ever seen. Over the years we've visited it several times, paying respects to its stunning Norman Church and its Fountain Head pub. And then there's Beer (I cannot resist a town called Beer - even one that serves the most revolting coffee known to man - clearly I should have stuck to its ale).

From there it was Padstow - home of Rick Stein, the famous fish chef (his cafe was locked to stop more people getting in - an unusual move for a cafe), and the pasty capital of the universe.

Port Isaac is the home of the favourite UK tv show Doc Martin but it's far better than that.

I used to think of Tintagel as being the extremely tacky home of the Arthur legend - you can barely move without tripping over Ye Olde Merlin Post Office or Ye Olde Arthur Car Park but now I know it's much more than that - the castle was built on an island at the end of the promontory and there is nothing for it but steps and steep climbs to reach it and its heights. At the top, I fell down and had to eat a banana...

Other places I'd like to show you are Boscastle, ravaged in the flash flood of 2004 and now recovered and beautiful, the gorgeous inn of St Kews, hidden away, and the stunning St Swithin Church at Launcells, the 'least worst spoilt church in Cornwall' according to Betjeman.

If you can get to Dorset, Devon and Cornwall do! Even if it's in a tent...

Photos from the LA Times and WDW.

I have a guest reviewer on For Winter Nights - a review of Napoleon's Pyramids to mark the launch of the new Ethan Gage website. Very exciting!

Brokeback Mountain gets LoveFilm's vote, Zodiac premieres on UK TV and Region 2 LAOD DVD out tomorrow

It may be over six years since Brokeback Mountain first stunned, broke and then put back together many of the people who saw it in the theatres (including myself), but the passing years mean nothing to a film that it is timeless. This week, followers of the the UK film rental company LoveFilm voted Ennis and Jack as the 'top on-screen love affair'. Fatal Attraction, Pretty Women, Lolita and even Romeo and Juliet completed the top five. I'm not at all surprised, but it's great to see the love continues for Ennis and Jack.

Another of Jake Gyllenhaal's classic movies, which for me is right up there with Brokeback, is Zodiac. Zodiac tonight has its premiere on British terrestrial TV - 9pm on BBC2. And you know what that means... no adverts! It is Radio Times' Film of the Week, with an award of four stars. The reviewer Andrew Collins concludes: 'The film - talky but intelligent and shot partly on digital stock - is very long and nothing like standard serial-killer thrillers. And that's why I love it'. This film grabs from the very first scene. If you've not seen it and you're in the UK watch it tonight. If you have seen it, watch it anyway. And if you're outside the UK, watch the DVD.

Talking of DVDs, the DVD and Blu-ray for Love and Other Drugs has been out a while in the US. But for all those who can't play Region 1 discs, tomorrow is the release date for the Region 2 discs in the UK. The extras are the same.

WDW Interlude

I was back in London today continuing my X-Men: First Class coverage for Blogomatic3000. On the way to the junket, I walked through Hyde Park and past the Italian gardens. I thought it looked beautiful in the May sunshine. Back to London tomorrow and more reports will be posted in the middle of next week.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway get sporty - and Enter the Source Code

Updated to add that you can follow Duncan's Source Code publicity tour through Rodene's travelogueblog (is that a word?). I've added a link on the top right of the front page here.

While Jake Gyllenhaal and Duncan Jones pack their bags and head off to Austin for the Source Code packed weekend (26 degrees centigrade forecast there for tomorrow so some suntan lotion and a big floppy hat might be in order), here is a brief interlude. It comes in the shape of a new Love and Other Drugs interview with Jake and Anne Hathaway and within it you will find some curious sporting metaphors. Jake also compares working with Annie to log rolling. Clearly logs are a lot more attractive in Hollywood than round these parts...

When Prince of Persia came out you may recall that Disney set up a smartphone PoP game that would be triggered if you walked past certain posters. Source Code also has a game - Enter the Source Code - and you can now play that using Facebook and on your phone. As is the way with these things, I believe the prizes are restricted to inhabitants of the US. There are more details about the development of the 20-minute game here.

Thanks to BBMISwear for the heads up on the great video!

New Source Code Stills, Vera Farmiga, LAOD in the home and play along with Jamie - and a northern WDW interlude

As I sit here watching Jurassic Park and rather wishing that Jake Gyllenhaal could fit a movie about dinosaurs into his forthcoming schedule, there's time to catch up a little from the weekend. There are couple of new stills from Source Code, thanks to IHJ - I prefer the first one. Something to do with the zips...

There is also a video interview with Vera Farmiga, who was so wonderful in Up in the Air, I'm excited to see her in Source Code. Vera's interview features in the first part of this clip.

Love and Other Drugs in the home

Two new deleted scenes from the Love and Other Drugs DVD and Blu-Ray have made it to the net although, more accurately, they are two parts of one scene. Here is the first part:

You can see part two here. But still this does not complete the scene so I suggest you get hold of the DVD or Blu-ray when you can. To mark the home release of the film, if you follow this link you can play along with Jamie Randall. Thanks to Monica for the heads up.

Incidentally, I got a fantastic score - try and beat it at your peril! 230 - I kid you not...

A WDW Manchester Interlude

I headed up north this weekend to the city of Manchester - my teenage stomping ground. Much has changed since the bomb of 1996 - the ultramodern now mixes with the 17th- and 18th- centuries of industry, trade and civic business. And pubs. Unfortunately, and not uncommonly, it was a grey day in Manchester.

Jake Gyllenhaal in talks for Ayer's End of Watch and new Source Code clips and interviews!

We regularly (although recently not regularly enough) have rumoured possible roles for Jake Gyllenhaal but when we hear them from Variety they get a little more attention. Today Variety has revealed that Jake is in early talks with director and writer David Ayer to star in his forthcoming 'gritty' police drama End of Watch. Of course, this just confirms what we already suspected. Jake was seen arriving at an office on 16 February and two eagle-eyed readers identified it as Ayer's Crave Productions.

A couple of things to note about this - End of Watch is in very early stages and Ayer is looking for financing. Ayer also has three other scripts in preparation - Last Man, Commando and Deep Sea Cowboys. Unlike recent news about The Bourne Legacy, though, Jake's is the only name being mentioned here. And finally, Ayer could seldom be accused of making a LAPD drama that wasn't gritty (Street Kings, S.W.A.T., Dark Blue, Training Day, The Fast and the Furious). His other interest is in submarines...

Source Code interviews!

Now some news about a film that is already made and is imminent - Source Code. The premiere at the SXSW Festival in Texas is less than two weeks away now - 11 March. Today we get the first 'proper' video interviews with Jake, Michelle Monaghan, Jeffrey Wright and director Duncan Jones, all thanks to Trailer Addict. But let's kick off with two new clips - the first of which features a smacker.

On with the interviews, starting off with Jake.

Includes a picture from IHJ.

Jake Gyllenhaal in LA 1 March, behind the scenes at the Oscars, a little extra LAOD and SC science

After all that Oscar partying, there's only one thing for it: a full fry up (veggie, of course) with extra toast. Not surprisingly, then, Jake Gyllenhaal was seen at La Cienega Grill Café in LA yesterday lunchtime (1 March). There are more pictures at FYB.

At the Oscars, Jake presented the award for Best Live Action Short to Luke Matheny. for God of Love. The producer of that film, Stephen Dypiangco, has been talking about that magical evening: 'Stephen also recalled how Jake Gyllenhaal teased Luke when he was having his photo taken at the media room after the awards. According to Stephen, Jake told Luke, ‘Look at all these photographers. They are all your new friends!’" Stephen recalled that at one of the parties they went to, Luke saw Jake again. As Luke wanted to talk to Jake again, he followed him. "Since we, his entourage, were all following him, we followed Luke too. It turned out that Jake went to the men’s room. So suddenly, there was a long bee line outside the men’s room!" Stephen recalled, laughing.'

In this brief video below, you can see Jake, Luke and Amy Adams backstage.

Love and Other Drugs deleted scene

Hopefully, many of you now have the LAOD DVD or Blu-Ray. If you haven't, you can see one of the deleted scenes from it below, thanks to the NYP.

And finally...

The science of Source Code has a write up in Wired. It is very slightly spoilery so do consider that before you follow this link (although it does give fair warning).

[Updated] Watch the Oscars red carpet on WDW, a Love and Other Drugs DVD extra and a PoP photoshoot

Update!

Jake and Michelle Williams (source):

The post

The Oscars are looming. They're really looming. I'm not able to watch them myself due to a variety of facts - a) they're not on TV; b) LA has worse weather than England at the moment; c) some of us have got to go to work in the morning (when they're pretty much still on, UK time) and d) they're not on TV. Nevertheless, you can watch the red carpet streaming live here and hopefully you'll spot Jake Gyllenhaal in less time than it takes to say 'Is Jake wearing Ford?'

I'd like to ask for a moment's pause and solemnity here so that I can make offerings to the Oscar Gods and entreat them to see that justice is done - let me behold David Fincher with an Oscar! Let Michelle Williams win an Oscar! And may I never hear these three words again after tonight: 'The King's Speech'.

You can see a video of Jake talk about his Oscar memories on the AP livestream site. Thanks to La Brulee! You'll have to search for the link on the page - it's below the playing video - but it's there.

While Jake makes himself ship shape and Bristol fashion - and recovers from all those night before parties the night before - there is time to enjoy some new pictures from IHJ from a Prince of Persia photoshoot in London last spring. I must apologise to everyone for the wallpaper and decor in these images. Please believe that this is not entirely representative of English interior design.

IHJ also has some more pictures from Jake's haircut outing on Friday. I rather liked this one.

Love and Other Drugs out on DVD 1 March

Love and Other Drugs is out on DVD and Blu-ray on 1 March in the US. You can take a look at one of the extra features here.

And finally...

Thanks to Karmentxu for the heads up to this new Source Code still!

Break a leg, James and Anne!

Many thanks to IHJ for the new pics!
