Fulfilling a dream (a natural history diversion with David Attenborough) - And Hank Azaria talks Love and Other Drugs

This post comes with a warning of some off-topicness although it does try to make a break for it a little bit of the way through and behave itself. As we speak, Jake Gyllenhaal's hard at work trying to stir up a bunch of pharmaceutical reps in Pittsburgh's Mellon Arena, so hopefully he won't mind a diversion. Call it a tea break.

You know me, BIG wildlife and natural history fan - so much so I nearly got tipped out of a canoe by a perplexed hippo while being set upon by an eagle that thought I was a goose. An easy mistake to make, I thought, so I don't hold a grudge, despite the crocodiles. A big reason why I have spent a considerable part of my life living in tents and travelling to see and photograph animals in their natural habitat can be summed up in two words - David Attenborough (possibly three words - Sir David Attenborough). To me he has always been my imaginary Uncle David (I do get teased for it, I assure you), since before Life on Earth back in the late 70s. And I've read every word and seen every film. Last night, a new series began - Life - and it contains images of familiar and unimaginable beasts living extraordinary lives. I'm trying to forget the image of the insect that blew its eyes up with air bubbles sucked into its head...

But today, I got the chance to see David Attenborough for the first time in person. His book signing in Oxford's Waterstones (in the Philosophy section) was attended by more people than there are krill in the sea - they filled three floors. I got pictures, I left happy with another ambition ticked off, fulfilled. So, you have to indulge me, because this was a biggie.

Back on topic...

Hank Azaria has been talking about his role in Love and Other Drugs - already! Not even in the can and we're already getting some info. 'Right now, Azaria's attention is also on "Love and Other Drugs." In fact, he tells us that with the health care debate raging on, he and Anne Hathaway, Jake Gyllenhaal and the rest of the "Love and Other Drugs" team keep saying to each other, "We wish this movie was coming out next week. It just has so much to say about the effect big pharma has really had on the medical profession and the health care world. It's greater than people think," Hank declares. "This really goes into what that system has created and how it works in a day-to-day way."'

'As it is, the comedic drama/romance has weeks of production left to go. Azaria is playing "a doctor of questionable ethics, who engages in some things dealing with pharmaceutical companies that you wish your doctor wouldn't do" in the feature. Drawn from "Hard Sell: The Evolution of a Viagra Salesman" by Jamie Reidy, the film's depiction of "this whole world -- the pharmaceutical world -- and the Viagra story itself are all true. The love story between Jake and Anne, that part is fiction," he says.' It may be fiction, but can we at least have pics? More here.

Co-star Jamie Alexander has been showing off her 90s' Love and Other Drugs hairdo - gotta say, I like it.

There are two videos to show today - one shows the dedicated Doctor Parnassus fans of London Town trawling the streets of the capital to get people into theatres, on to seats, to see this much loved movie. Thanks to a good mate for sending this through!

The other clip, here through a link, is a teaser of Maggie Gyllenhaal's new Nanny McPhee movie which features Emma Thompson (who also appears in An Education) in frightening form: 'You've been very naughty' - gulp.

Includes pictures from IHJ and WDW.

There you are! Been wondering about you! What an exciting day for you! Well I can't say I know much about any of this but your passion and excitement is just ooozing through the computer screen as I read about all this David Attenborough and animal photography stuff so who cares if I don't completely understand the topic...it's all good stuff! I am laughing at you being mistaken for a goose while being set upon by an eagle and dealing with a hippo!!! (sorry - hee hee)!

Okay...on to that other exciting stuff...Jake and Anne! Well, we kinda have some info here...at least their "love story" is being discussed. And you're right, now we just need some pictures! I hope some come out of the big shoot today (with or without Anne). It's been fun seeing little peeks of this production.

Yay to Imaginaruium...I hope it makes it way to the states (other than the film festivals that aren't exactly convenient to get to)! And Yay for another movie from Maggie. Thank you for always keeping us on top of everything here!

Back to my not so exciting To Do List...but I gotta take my on line breaks ya know. :-)

Hey BBMISwear! I'm here! It's been quite a day, a long one, very exciting and too busy. Good to see you!

I love natural history and wildlife so much - it's a huge passion of mine. I'm fortunate to have seen some great sights around the world (including those whales off your shore!) and maybe I wouldn't have done if I hadn't have watched David Attenborough's programmes as a child, or read his books. I pretty much learnt to read with his books - also thanks to my dad who shares the passion (although he's into bugs - ugh...). And you know I love camels :)

I'm with you on hoping we get pics out of today. There are enough people there, someone must have something!

Good luck with your to do list - I have so many lists it's not funny. Have a good evening *)

WOW meeting David Attenborough WDW. Thanks for sharing the pics with us. I saw Life last night too. It was wonderful viewing.

Fingers crossed we'll see some pics of Anne and Jake on the set soon.

I am preparing myself to see the Imaginarium over the weekend. I really want to go. But at the same time it feels like once I go it is the end of something. I can see my friend having to push me in the door of the cinema when the time comes.

Hi Carol! It was amazing, wasn't it? Those poor penguins...

I think the chances are high that I won't see Dr P, at least not on the big screen. I hope your friends push you through that door and that it's a good experience :)

One friend in particular is fairly determined that I go see it so he will be pushing me through the door I'd say:)

Thanks for the Nanny McPhee clip with Maggie aswell.

Have a good evening:)

Good for you, Carol, in being brave enough :)

Nanny McPhee may be for kiddies but it does look a lot of fun - I can see why Maggie would do it. Ramona'll enjoy it when she's older.

I hope you have a good evening too - I'm trying to relax now after a long day :)

Nature is god and Sir David is its prophet - wow, I can't believe you met him. I think I would freeze utterly if I had a chance to meet him, I would be so awe-inspired. And I can't believe he's not well known everywhere and that human society doesn't stop every time one of his programmes comes out. Which it more or less does here, at least I guess. Jake may be hot, but Sir David has the auctoritas, and for a human IMHO, nothing beats that at all.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TD! Absolutely! There aren't many people with that amount of influence - and David also shaped much of what we see on the BBC due to being Conntroller of BBC2 and then in charge of BBC1 and BBC2 programming. There were a lot of awe-inspired people, of all ages, in the shop today. I believe hundreds of books were sold. And there was a time when David was hot too! I remember seeing Zoo Quest when I was a child. Jake is a fine successor :) Now all he needs to do is a wildlife documentary...

Such exciting news!! Sir David Attenborough...wow, WDW. :)

And all the Jake movie news is brilliant! LAOD sounds great and squee at seeing the pics of Jake! Love Hank Azaria too. :D

Peter's movie is getting excellent reviews and I can't wait to see it. Nice to see Maggie's move trailer too.

Wow, congratulations WDW, on meeting Sir David Attenborough!

Glad to hear more on LaOD too, it sounds like its going to be great.

I am looking forward to Dr. P, I know it will be difficult, but I gotta see Heath. I was reading Jake Weird the other day and they had something on it, a trailer maybe? I only had a chance to see quickly, but each part of Tony's personality depicted by either Heath, Johnny, or Jude. Very well done, and you do find it believable.

Hi Bertie! I believe there is a new trailer now for Dr P. I was watching the feature on it on Film 2009 last night and it made a big point of how excellent the three other actors are, in particular Johnny Depp. I'm intrigued to see how it all works.

Have a good day everyone!

Wow, David Attenborough, I love all the programs he's created/produced that I've been able to watch since moving to the UK (although some of them are also broadcast on Italian TV as part of a science program series). Good for you, WDW!!!
Being such a wildlife enthusiast, you have to go to Australia (unless you've already been? I can't remember)... the country is a natural scientist's paradise :)))

Thank you for this wonderful post. Have a nice day

Thanks Paola! I really want to go to Australia - not least because of your experiences there - your pics were amazing :) I hope you're having a good day - the sun has come out here :D
