A clip from Brothers featuring Natalie Portman and Carey Mulligan

When Carey Mulligan began filming An Education in the Spring of 2008, she had just completed work on another movie - Brothers. Now there is a real possibility that Carey and her co-star Natalie Portman may go head to head in the Oscars arena (with Crazy Heart Maggie Gyllenhaal another possible contender). I've been intrigued to know more about Carey's role in Brothers and so it's a pleasure to have a new clip from the movie today, courtesy of HitFix.

At the rate things are going, we could get Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman, Peter Sarsgaard, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Carey Mulligan, Alfred Molina - and who knows how many other people with a Jake connection - up for the big gongs. It now seems certain that U2 will also enter the fray with their Brothers song Winter, now that it is established that it was written specifically for the film and not a left over from the last album. InContention, as well as discussing the song, reports back from their vewing of Brothers and has this to say: 'As for the film itself, well, I wasn’t as impressed as Pete Hammond was, but I do think it fits nicely in what has become a great trio of Middle East war films this year. I was less enthusiastic about Tobey Maguire’s performance than I was by Jake Gyllenhaal’s more natural portrayal. In fact, it seems that every time I see Gyllenhaal in something, I’m reminded of how underrated he is as an actor. The real story of the film, however, is the casting of Bailee Madison and Taylor Geare, two absolutely amazing young girls who knock it out of the park. Much credit is due to Sheridan, of course, who has shown in the past his ability to get great performances out of children. But these two ladies have talent to spare. It was a really nice surprise. I’ll get into “Brothers” more throughout the season, I’m sure.'

Thanks to BBMISwear for letting us know that Tobey Maguire will appear on Ellen on 3 December, the same day that jake is on the Jimmy Kimmel show. One wonders if Jake will also use this visit to LA to record an Ellen.

Thank you for this clip, WDW - the more clips I see from this movie the more intense it feels to me. I am looking so forward to seeing it (and can't believe how soon it will be)!

Yes, Tobey on Ellen soon - I want Jake to be on Ellen too! Don't you just love every time he is on her show? I love the way they bounce off of each other. They are both so funny! I'll take any talk show for Jake right now...it's been AGES!

You're right - the award shows are going to be fun this year!

Happy Thursday!

:-)

Morning BBMISwear! You're up early :-) It really is intense - I hope we get more of these clips. I wish the wait was just as short for parts of Europe and elsewhere though, so I hope there's lots of things like this to fill the gap :D

Jake is GREAT on Ellen - I think both Jake and Ellen enjoy it, so here's hoping that Ellen wouldn't have Tobey for one show and not have Jake for another.

At the weekend, I was watching a programme about Ray Mears learning survival skills in the Arctic and he saw some Inuit singing. It reminded me so so much of Jake on Ellen when I was crying with laughter watching Jake's attempts!

The awards are going to be fun! At this rate, we should like most of the field!

Have a good Thursday!

Hi, WDW

Right now I'm cringing at Inuit references (through no fault of the Inuits themselves) because I've heard that Alaska has channeled some of its federal stimulus money into building an airstrip in Inuit territory. They've managed nicely without any airplanes landing there for thousands of years, so why would the money be used for it?

Anyway, I don't care about Mayan prophecies, I just want the end of the world to hold off until after I've seen "Brothers" and "Prince of persia." It's not much to ask. My favorite poem is Archibald MacLeish's "The end of the world." http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/the-end-of-the-world/

I'm glad that Jake is getting recognition as a serious and committed actor. I know that it's been noted earlier that he isn't the most technically oriented actor, but he always seems to disappear into his characters, which should be point of acting, shouldn't it?

Hi there Paul! With the weather as it is here with hurricane force gales and floods, I'm staying alert to those Mayan messages :D Seriously though, every film I've seen Jake in, I've believed in his characetr totally and I can never believe how different but believable Jake makes these roles. Such a gift. I think that's why some people underrate him, he makes it look too easy.

Ooooh i'm crossing my fingers for an ellen appearance this year!! Those are my favourite two interviews :D . Just to let you know i went to see 2012 and LOVED it. Thoroughly enjoyed myself, going in with such low expectation after the extremely bad reviews..i thought it was a perfectly acceptable blockbuster..if it's got Roland's name attached to it what do people expect? The same reviews are written over and over again 'the special effects were the only good thing'.. which is hardly original.. and i thought john cusack did fine :). A bit of 'fun' if you can call the end of the world that : ) I am watching the day after tommorow on film4 :D xx

Thanks for the clip! Is it such me or Carey's scene in Brothers reminds me strongly of Michelle Williams... Or I am just too BBM-wired.

Looking forward to all the Brothers related talk show appearance. This film is shaping up to be one to look out for (I mean for the general public - we've been looking out for it for SOOOO long *g*)

And I also think if you want the public to watch a film about the war (any recent war), it's better to present the theme in a family drama...

I Agree Winterbird!! She is very similar.

I know Ellen and Jake are friends, it's hard to say what shows he'll be on. I guess that is up to his publicist.

Don't forget that Jake will be on Sesame Street getting attacked by an octopus (at least his hair will be) On Dec 4th :D

Hi there, Anon! I'd love to have a name for you! I'm really glad you enjoyed 2012! I have to admit that I went to see it a second time, on a bigger screen with a fab sound system, and I enjoyed it much more. Those are the trailers I had too. Enjoy TDAT, I've seen that this week on Film 4 too :D

Hey Winterbird! I thought that about Carey too - glad it wasn't just me :D OMG this film looks amazing and it's so good to now hear that the rest of the filmviewing world is ready for it too!

Hi Sweetpea :) Jake and his PR definitely know what shows he's gonna do, unfortunately they're not telling us! Oh yes, not a chance of forgetting Jake and the Octopus :D

I hope everyone's having a good evening/day! I do believe it's Friday tomorrow...

Very similar.
I hope one day to see Michelle Williams and Jake in a movie together.

After this clip I am anxious to see the scene of Carey and Tobey!

Hi Monica! That would be a really good thing to see :D I really am looking forward to finding out more about Carey's role in Brothers. She's an amazing actress and I find it surreal that a girl I saw filming in Oxford had just finishing filming Brothers with Jake! Carey's achieved so much in the last year or two. There are so many elements to Brothers and I can't wait for all of them!
