[Update] Jim Sheridan on 'charismatic' Jake Gyllenhaal, poker-faced Tobey Maguire and 'true blue' Natalie Portman

Jim Sheridan has more to say about his star Jake Gyllenhaal: '“He was always real on set, ‘cause he’s always finding something or looking for something. If you were the type of director who just wanted him to hit his mark, I think you’d curtail him in some way that doesn’t get the best out of him. ‘Cause I think he’s a charismatic actor, who’s always the centre of attention. Which drove me crazy for the first few weeks,” says Sheridan, deadpan, “as I wanted to be the centre of attention.”' It all seems a million miles away from Jake's Trial by Fincher.

Tobey Maguire is the contrast. “You know the way his eyes are when you go in close on Tobey Maguire. He’s thinking. He’s like a poker player. You never know what he’s thinking, but it’s kind of benign. He’s like an everyman. I thought if you kind of took that away, and ended up with blank eyes, a stare, it would be very scary,” says Sheridan. “Because we know him as the opposite.” He then describes Natalie Portman as, “The person you want to have at your back in a war. She’s true blue.” Source.

This reflects Jim's previous comments to the SFGate: 'As an actor "Tobey likes to control a lot. That is the way he lives. He has a cook that cooks for him. His world is very controlled. Even when acting, he is not the kind of guy who would get loose. He's quiet and pensive and thinking about things."

By contrast, Gyllenhaal is a "free-wheeling actor. He is always looking around. He has three or four things going through his head, and normal stars just have one." It would mean trouble, Sheridan believes, if a director told Gyllenhaal to just stand there and hit his mark. "The way he lives in a scene is to be half there and half out there looking around. I found it completely fascinating."' Sam Mendes experienced something similiar during the filming of Jarhead.

In this interview, Sheridan also mentioned something interesting about the actors taking a paycut for this role, just as Jake had done for Rendition and Nailed. 'With a budget of only $25 million, financing came together easily. The actors took "a quarter or maybe even a 10th of what they usually get paid," Sheridan said.'

The concept that Jake found Brothers, along with previous roles, a learning experience both on and off camera, is strengthened by a story today that elaborates on Jake's press conference account of visiting young offenders in jail. 'Gyllenhaal, who plays a grown up juvenile delinquent in the film, spent time with convicted drug smugglers and murderers in an effort to determine what life behind bars for a teenager is like – and he admits the experience has changed his life forever. He met with 18 year olds who are serving life sentences and others who have since been freed and are trying to get their lives in order. One such teen, Victor, made such an impact on Gyllenhaal and director Jim Sheridan, they cast him in the film. The actor explains, “This kid Victor was in jail and he was released and had the opportunity to change his life and told us stories that were unreal to me.”He was hiding meth in the back of a lamp of a four wheel vehicle driving over the border and he was 16. He changed his life and is working for the governor’s office in Sacramento now.”Jim (Sheridan) ended up putting him in the movie in a scene where my brother Tobey Maguire’s helicopter goes down.”In the film, Maguire and Gyllenhaal play feuding siblings.' Source.

The New York Times has a substantial article on Brothers this weekend, which goes into some depth about how the film came to be made and how all were well aware of its predecessor. You can also see there the trailers for the two movies and so make your own comparisons about these sets of Brothers.

Throughout all these articles, Jim Sheridan's personality, passion and humanity dominate - listening to Jim describe the forces and blows that have shaped his own life and the movies he's filled it with is simply fascinating. He has brought this into Brothers, just as with the other films, and this suggests to me at least that there is much about this film that is unique.

If you fancy having a laugh, here is an R-rated video spoof of the making of Brothers and what things were 'really like' behind the scenes between Spidey and Bubble Boys.

Update: You may, but may not have, noticed that I've added another link to the sidebar today. This is for a new experiment of mine - a site where I can whitter on about all the other things that interest me that I come across while researching for WDW. It's not intended to take up much time because obviously WDW is and will always remain my priority. It will just stop me boring everyone here with all my interludes!

I`m so glad that letterman talks about the movie as one of the finest in the last 12, 20 years!

Letterman didn't say one of the finest, he said the finest movie in the last 12, 20 years. It makes me really curious to see it. Unfortunalely I have to wait a while. I heard the original movie is awsome too though.

A little info for Jake/Anne fans. According to Daily Mail, Jake cooked a dinner for him and Anne in his trailer on set for Anne's 27th birthday. ;)

Thanks for the updates WDW. :)

What a great post - wonderful comments from Jim about Jake, and hearing about Jake's research for the role of Tommy.

Jake cooking dinner for Anne's birthday - what a great present! :)

Hi Jake Fan! I stand corrected :D That's really something to say. If that's true, that must be quite a trailer... And it's my pleasure :D

A very wet Sunday here - one for relaxing. I hope everyone's having good one :D

Hi Bertie! Posting at the same time! I love hearing Jim talk about this movie - he's a fascinating man.

It's my birthday coming up, can I make a booking?

LOL - wouldn't that be something? I'd like to make a booking too. ;)

A big, big BIG write-up on Brothers in the Boston Sunday Globe Arts section today - first page, pictures of Tobey, mostly about him I think, at first glance, but I'll have to read it to be sure. :)

Hi there :) I have an overflowing inbox... Obviously, WDW is not about gossip but this looks like an announcement of sorts to me. In which case, all the best and love to Jake xx (I would also like to point out that I am still available)

Anonymous said...

No you're not! I'm gonna tell Mr. WDW!!! And Jake! :D

May I ask what your policy is on this subject? Can we give our opinions or would you rather not? Because I'm dying to say something but this is your blog and I want to respect that. And not get in trouble. :)

Olympia

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Olympia! Shusshh, don't tell Mr WDW, I can get things sorted... quietly.... Jake, I'm available!!

OK, this is is a big thing - this is a no-frills, no-comment 'announcement' and looks pretty kosher to me so.... Yes, do give opinions. This is too big an event to ignore. I don't want naughty language but we're friends here and can discuss it like grown up Gyllenhaalics.

So, whaddya think, Olympia? Don't keep it in!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Talk to me, people!

Looks like someone can't wait to spread the news about the fake romance they think Jake and Reese had/have ..(by the way 3 years is not "fake").
The comments came from a "source"..not them personally. I would think they would want to do that - and what terrible timing - Jake would have to put up with this during this week of all weeks.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks for your comment, Anon. Please note that I am not referring to a 'fake' romance here and that is not a subject for discussion. A break up is, not whether it's fake or not. OK? People is usually the source for this type of thing. It saves painful statement, because nobody would deny this is painful.

Anonymous said...

I meant the "fake" thing to be in response to the first notice of the statement from a "fauxromance".
Knew that wasn't from you WDM.
Just thinking of the kids.
But that doesn't mean he still can't be in touch with them.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Anon, I understand now :) These things are always sad when there are kids but I think Reese and Jake have good heads on their shoulders.

Anonymous said...

Ok. I'm gonna try to be mature about this...I know we won't all agree on this one.

Hell yes!!!!!! I so hope this is true! I want Jake to find someone he's happy with, someone who he has a connection with. Not someone who makes him look like a puppy dog on a leash or a little boy with his mother. I don't care who! Someone that makes him light up when they're together. Someone who doesn't take months to even acknowledge in public that he's part of her life and then the best she can muster up is: he's very supportive, his fabulous (!) or he's a very good cook. Talk about enthousiasm! I never thought he was happy with Reese, I'm still not sure they were even really together. I hope we get our old, sparkling Jake back. I miss him.

Olympia

Jake Fan said...

So, now we are a step closer to Jake & Anne. I know I'm evil. :D I hope Jake is doing fine. As for the kids (Ava and Deacon), they have their own loving daddy to take care of them. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Olympia! Too right that this is something we're not all gonna agree on and I've always been so happy that WDW steered clear - but we can all respect one another's opinion. So thanks for shring your's!

My own opinion is that, for me, it's all about Jake and I want to see Jake in the news for himself, for his genius, for his roles, his films, not just going out for coffee in pics labelled as someone else's boyfriend. I am so thrilled that now we have Jake in the news for Brothers and PoP and he is getting such great reviews and people are remembering his films. Reese is a strong woman and a capable one and she'll be fine. Sparkling Jake is good by me!

Hi Jake Fan :) Totally agreed about the kids, they have their mum and dad. And if Jake can't be with Jen Aniston, I'd be happy with Anne :D

Whatever is or isn't going on with Jake and Reese, it just sucks that this is coming out now. I really hope this doesn't distract from the Brothers LA premiere and the promotion. I hope Jake is ok whatever is really going on. :/

Anonymous said...

Guess it's right..we'll never agree. I felt he seemed very happy with her. And why ruin your life for almost 3 years of being miserable in something you faked - I can't imagine the Jake we like and respect would even think to do anything like that.
Apparently E has reported Jake's rep. said it wasn't true.
We'll just have to wait.

Anonymous said...

There's always been something special about Jennifer and Jake. That's a great example of what I meant when I talked about someone that makes him light up. They have amazing chemistry together. Anne would be good too. I agree with you, I want Jake to be more than just someone's boyfriend. Because he's so much more than that.

Just read that Jake and Reese's deny the break up reports.

Reese Witherspoon's rep denies that the actress and Jake Gyllenhaal have split

A spokeswoman for Reese Witherspoon has told EW that a story which broke earlier today about the star having split with Jake Gyllenhaal is “false.” The two actors first started dating after they were both cast in the 2007 film Rendition.

Jake's reps rarely make comments.
Apparently People didn't do anything but take someones info. to them at face value and didn't go to the actual people involved.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I agree, Olympia! Me or Jen would be fine :D

Thanks for the update, Get Real! That's a quick denial. Blimey!

Hi there - posting at the same time - I can't keep up! I suppose this makes a change for their reps from denying marriage proposals... Well, gossip mags are gossip mags and that's why I try and avoid them!

Well, I guess I can forget sparkly Jake then. I bet we get a million pictures of Jake and Reese holding hands tomorrow with a tag that "says Reese Whiterspoon and her boyfriend getting a coffe". *sigh*

That Brothers video spoof made me laugh, though. :)

Olympia

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I can do without those coffee pics too, Olympia, but I'm glad we have all the Brothers and PoP stuff.

I'm glad you iked that video. I was snorting with laughter when I saw it! Shrimp!

Maybe the fake break up rumor was just a publicity stunt to get attention also attention for "Brothers"?
Who knows? Oh well, moving on!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon! Very strange - People doesn't usually say this kind of stuff without some kind of sayso. But moving back to what matters - Brothers :D

Anonymous said...

I don't think Brothers needs any more publicity. its getting a lot of attention now.
I would hope - once again the Jake we say we like and respect - would not be involved in anything like that.
If he and Reese are seen together this week it will be because they would of been out together anyway -even if this "news" was never out there.

Anonymous said...

I don't know - People printed Tiger Woods was in an accident and was in serious condition.
He wasn't in serious condition.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there - Brothers certainly isn't the kind of movie in need of this kind of attention. Jake and the others have done themselves proud with this one :)

So many posts. I thought Jake had been nominated for a prize!

"The way he lives in a scene is to be half there and half out there looking around. I found it completely fascinating.
Very fascinating.

This kid Victor was in jail and he was released and had the opportunity to change his life and told us stories that were unreal to me.

That was interesting. Interesting to see that Jake met someone who was able to regenerate after a life linked to the crime.
Glad to read that Jake lives in a country where a criminal has the opportunity to regenerate.
In Brazil, violence increases every day.

Thank you for all this information.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Monica! It was so good to read about that - about Jake and Victor. This is what filmmaking is all about for Jake and this is why he takes the paycuts. He believes in it.

Monica said...

I love your new blog.

Since you asked said...

Both Jake and Reese's reps have shot down the lie they had broken up. They did it pretty quickly, too.

I must say how terribly disappointed I am at the glee with which the faux news of break up was greeted by some here.

I care for Jake very much. I think he is, to all reports, a very sweet, very good person. I could never rejoice at something like news of a break up. It would be rejoicing over someone else's pain.

It is shameful. Even if you don't like her, you would have to respect his feelings. Break ups are very painful experiences. The prospect of seeing Jake wandering around alone as we did for many months, doesn't inspire joy in me. I like knowing he is loved. I like it that he has someone special in his life.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks so much, Monica! I appreciate that :D

Hi Since You Asked :) They denied it very quickly. I don't think anyone here would rejoice over the idea of Jake in pain, I'm pretty sure of that one. You aren't alone in caring for Jake very much - I think there's evidence for that all around you. It's a good thought that Jake is surrounded by people who love him - he's one of the very lucky ones :D

Also it's worth bearing in mind that just because someone is seen walking around for months on their own, it doesn't mean that they are alone. I feel that very strongly. I'm someone who goes through life often seen to be on my own but I have a partner and friends and family who love me. Jake lives much of his life happily away from the cameras. I think Jake is fine in his private life (if he has split with Reese I think it's been a while and he'll recover as we do and if they're together they'll laugh this off) - we're here for the public side of him.

I am so grateful for Brothers and PoP! It's wonderful being able to talk about Jake the actor!

I have gone on... sorry!

Hope said...

I'd like to see Jake happy with someone who loves him and whom he truly loves too - not stuck in an ill-advised fauxmance in the mistaken belief it is the right move for his career(especially when she who has been pulling the strings has been the only one to truly profit from the charade....)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Hope - I welcome the comment. Although this has never been a forum for discusing the relationship like that, as it goes too far away from what interests me about Jake, I do wish him every happiness. He'll get there :)

paulh said...

Hi, WDW

I saw "An Education" today, and it was full of links to Jake and Maggie. If you count the preview of Gilliam's "Imaginarium," there's also the Heath Ledger link. I was blown away by the "Imaginarium" preview. That is going to be an incredible movie. I hope Heath gets another Oscar nomination for it.

Now, as to "An Education," it had performances all around. The young actress who played the schoolgirl held her own with Peter Sarsgaard on the screen. I think she looks a lot like Leslie Caron, especially in the scenes in Paris. The title is very apt: she got quite an education in the company of Peter's character!

Anonymous said...

Of course I don't wish Jake to be unhappy. And I know breakups can be hard and painful. But I don't get the feeling his relashionship with Reese was/is very good for him and I wish he was with someone else.

I think it's possible to be glad about a breakup when you think it's better for a person you care about but at the same time feel sympathy for the pain it causes. I've been in this situation before with a friend of mine. And if Jake is sad right now, I'm not happy about it and I hope he's got people around to support him. But in my "glee", I didn't make myself very clear on that point, did I. :)

And I agree with WDW on the "looking lonely" part. Being on your own doesn't necessarily mean you're lonely and really, I think it's better to be on your own and happy than miserable with someone.

Olympia

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! I'm so glad you enjoyed the film - I've been thinking about you seeing it. And seeing a preview for Dr P - how good is that! I think Carey Mulligan is someone to watch - and I'm looking forward to seeing her in Brothers.

Hi Olympia! I think Jake is surrounded by people who love him. Whatever's going on or not going on, he'll come through :)

Anonymous said...

His career was going fine before they got together and would continue to be fine if they had never met.
If you look at Jake from the viewpoint of thinking he is in a relationship that isn't "real" it seems to me he would be what would be called - Unscrupulous & of course, a Liar.

RDJ said he was the "real deal" and was someone who was who he said he was and he had "his back forever". I will go with that.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks for your comment, Anon:)

Off to bed now, ready for a new week. Thanks for the polite discussion - you've all done me proud :D See you in the morning.

"But I don't get the feeling his relashionship with Reese was/is very good for him and I wish he was with someone else."

How in the world would you ever know. Some of you are like the characters in a Paul Gallico novel.

And can I just say that I thought the 'Poseidon Adventure' was a good novel :)

Good morning everyone! Monday ugh...

Thanks for keeping me company yesterday evening. Today we should get the Moviefone Unscripted interview - so will Jake being asked our questions?! Stay tuned...

Have a good day!

Anonymous said...

"How in the world would you ever know."

May I point out, Anon, that I am merely stating an opinion? If you read my comment, I never said " I know" or "I am sure". And excuse my lack of culture but should I be insulted by that Paul Gallico remark? If so, I would have hoped that you'd have the courage to at least put your name on your post.

Olympia

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Olympia :) Unfortunately some people don't understand the word 'opinion' - maybe because it's not a word used in a Paul Gallico book. Possibly because it has more than two syllables.

Happily, the vast majority of people here respect that other people can have a different point of view and not go all judgmental and scary.

I hope you're having a nice day - for a Monday... :)

Anonymous said...

Well, it' s always fun to be insulted first thing in the morning! :D And it's a Monday, not my favorite day of the week.

But we'll get the Moviefone thing today and that should be fun so I' d say the day can only get better. :)

I hope you have a nice one too.

Both Jake and Reese's reps have shot down the lie they had broken up.

So People magazine announcement was just publicity stunt?

I thought that Jake, Reese and their showmance couldn't be more pathetic. I was wrong.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Time to draw a line under this discussion NOW. Anon, you're drawing 'conclusions' from someone else who also doesn't know what's going on, just like you - and that is why gossip is not welcome here. Plus anyone who calls Jake 'pathetic' has no place here. That's how it is.

Hi Gretchen! I hope it turns up soon, I'm getting impatient!

Anonymous said...

*Waves to Gretchen* :) I don't remember reading a specific time on the Moviefone thing. I wonder how long it will be and what questions they'll choose. One person asked how the actors prepared themselves when they have to do promotion on a movie that was filmed so long ago. I thought that was a very good question. There were some funny ones too, like the one about Spiderman meeting Donnie Darko and would they get along. I have no idea what they'd respond to that. :D

Olympia

Monica said...

I hope these history don't interfere in the film and the performance of Jake.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Olympia! There were some great questions. Hopefully it'll be up not too late tonight. The Spidey/Donnie question was a particular goodie.

Hi Monica! I think Jake'll be fine :) It's so great to have finally reached the week when a Jake movie comes out - shame not in the UK and other places as well but it's still a good week :D

I was talking about Brothers.

Go to the Playlist blog and read the review of Brothers.
Amazing!!!!!!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I was too, Monica! I've read it - more excellent reviews for Jake :D

I'm trying to avoid some reviews because they're from people who've seen the film and I haven't so some are a bit spoilery. Others are just plain glowing and that's fine!

paulh said...

Someone mentioned that the Movie section of Sunday's Boston Globe had a front-page article about "Brothers." Sadly, that's the section that was left out of my copy. :-(

So, I had to wait until I got to work today to finally see the article. The article focuses on Tobey Maguire, as it should. Jake has praised Tobey's performance in some of the interviews he's done. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie. :-)

BBMISwear said...

Paul! This is so strange! The same thing happened to me...the Arts/Movies/Travel section was left out of my Boston Sunday Globe...what are the chances?! I just confirmed with a friend that she will save her copy and drop it off to me. I did see the article on line and at first glance I think it's mostly about Tobey (with a big picture of Tobey). Tobey's fine and all...but why not more on Jake?! I need to get back to that article and read it all the way through.

Lots going on these last couple of days while I was overloaded with family stuff. It took a while to catch up...Whew! Never a dull moment around here! It's going to be interesting to see how this week progresses...for a variety of reasons. :-)

I don't have time to read all the comments here..but i hope Reese and Jake havn't broken up!! :( i just want him to happy i suppose..

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! I'd heard from BBMISwear earlier that her copy also missed it out and I see she's here to say that - that's not good! I hope you enjoyed An Education :D

Hey BBMISwear :-) I'm glad you can get hold of a copy. I wish it were less Tobey-biased as well but I suppose publicity is good. Yep, interesting times, all right!

Hi there Silver! Good to see you :D I heard Reese was on the JR Show - I imagine she's plugging her perfume.

New post as Moviefone are taking too long!

Such a lot going on in the last few days in more ways than one.

Have to say I am brimming with Irish pride reading the positive reaction to Jim and Brothers. Am really looking forward to the publicity for the movie before it is released over here.

A friend said that Reese is on Jonathon Ross too. Can't think what she could be promoting. All I will say is if Jake and Reese have split up I hope they won't be hurting for too long and can move on with their lives. Best of luck to them both.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Carol! You have every right to be bursting with that Irish pridde! Jim has done you and your countryfolk proud! I hope Jake gets over there in the New Year to promote it. There's a chance of that.

Yes, that's all you can do - wish everyone well in this.

New post - you must be off on your trip soon, Carol?

I'm hoping that Jake may be over here for a little promotion in the New Year too. The movie will definitely have maximum exposure both because of Jim and the U2 song aswell.
