Jake Gyllenhaal to complete his degree? And two passions combined into a Jake and chocolate fondue

A random quote appeared in the Mirror today, which suggests, as much as anything in the Mirror can, that Jake Gyllenhaal may be considering resuming his degree. 'I dropped out of Columbia University in 2000 after two years of studying Eastern religions and philosophy to concentrate on acting. But I have always wanted to finish my degree.' Previously, Jake has discussed his time at Columbia as being half-heartedly spent but maybe now that ten years has passed he's reassessing his goals, perhaps even (to go out on a limb) his location. Or it's completely made up as there's not a clue as to where this quote comes from or its context. One thing I am sure of - Jake will succeed in whatever he wants to do.

There is a birthday party scene in Brothers which features Jake Gyllenhaal and big slabs of chocolate cake in the same frame. I can only think that Sheridan included this scene in order to test my Gyllenhaalism. Where would my eye rest? Would it roam? I am ashamed to admit that during that scene I was able to assess the extent to which each piece of chocolate cake had been eaten. There may have been some drama taking place but show me a scene with Jake Gyllenhaal and chocolate in it and it's more than my brain can take to have to deal with plot as well.

January has begun - yesterday didn't count for self-inflicted reasons - and one part of my brain is telling me that it's time to make some resolutions in order to break them next week. However, I write this post while chomping on a chocolate orange with little volcanic bits in it that fizz on the tongue in a very pleasing and strangely delicate way, and so I thought let's wait a bit before giving all this up. I may have spinning classes booked for next week but there is still time to reflect on two of my favourite passions - chocolate and Jake Gyllenhaal.

We know Jake enjoys a cookie or two, as demonstrated in a remarkable display of flirtation. He also nabbed a cookie from an interviewer for Maxim Fashion back in 2006. Ellen Pompeo once recounted that Jake used to love to rustle up treats on the set of Moonlight Mile: 'Pasta, salad, chocolate chip cookies, anything. He's a great guy. He likes to have fun and he loves to live life.'

Jake is also a master of ancient black magic chocolate cooking: 'Jake Gyllenhaal actually himself bakes a chocolate zucchini bread, whatever that is.' Obviously I would eat such a thing, the next time Jake cares to bake it for me, but my mind would boggle.

Jake was seen at Sprinkles in Beverly Hills a couple of weeks ago and his order: 'He bought 2 chocolate peppermint, 2 chocolate marshmallow, 2 red velvet, 1 dark chocolate and 2 doggie cupcakes.' For me, the list stopped with 'chocolate marshmallow'.

On occasion, Jake even dresses like chocolate - like a 'chocolate fondue' as one critic put it, when describing Moonlight Mile: 'the film's production designers, who, to capture the story's 1973 setting, have gone to great lengths to make the clothes, cars, and storefronts along Main Street look as brown as chocolate fondue.'

Rather curiously, and pleasantly coincidentally, the video for Snow Patrol's chocolate was once described as being like The Day After Tomorrow (crossed with Alice in Wonderland) without Jake Gyllenhaal. And that would make it clearly not a good thing.

With that, I had better be off to eat more chocolate before thinking about not giving it up. No such problem or dilemma with Jake Gyllenhaal - he's a stayer.

you had me at chocolate, WDW :D

I hope your New Year has been good so far. I'm staying inside to stay away from the cold wind blowing.

Jake and chocolate is a wonderful combination.

I have to wonder how true that report is that Jake would want to finish his degree. We certainly know he's very smart and can do anything he puts his mind to. So I guess we'll have to wait and see.

OMGosh, what are you trying to do to us??!! Jake and chocolate. . . .

Speaking of chocolate orange, my little one shared his chocolate fingers with me even offereing me the last two. But would he share his chocolate orange? Not even one segment.

BTW forgot to say how sweet that was of Uli to make you a Jake calendar with the courage picture in it - fabulous!

Back to Jake and chocolate . . .

It would be delightful if Jake finished his degree. I'm not happy with universities handing out honourary degrees without those people at least attempting to achieve it just like the rest of us. Additionally, if he's going to commit to this reading programme that would be the ideal time and opportunity to 'lead by example'.

You know what.... Jake and chocolate. Needs no other words :DD

Hi there Sweetpea! I'm having trouble getting past the chocolate too...:D I'm rather dubious about the validity of a random quote but if Jake wants to do that, good for him. So long as he fits it in between films!

Hey Sheba! I was expecting you! I know what a fellow chocolate addict you are :D I have had so many chocolates it's been great! I decided to go with the eat less of normal food and eat more of chocolate approach this year. I was tempted by this new type of chocolate orange - with volcanic sweets in it - and I can definitely recommend it. I have a normal chocolate orange as a control :D

Jake does seem to have had his mind on education lately and maybe he has been influenced by these youngsters. I remember Jake joking about honorary degrees but I agree that Jake would want to get it the hard way. Mind you, if this is all balderash then I think Jake should be perfectly happy with the decision he made ten years ago - he's had an amazing eucation over the last ten years doing the career he wanted to do. I'd wish the same thing for any of us.

I hope everyone's having a good evening - I've been so lazy today you wouldn't believe it! Ooh, my word is 'tattle'

I concur absolutely ;D I'd just love the opportunity to carry his books whilst discussing the philosophies of Hare Chrishna whilst gazing into his eyes and being transported to my forefathers in ancient...... oh sorry, where was I?!

I think just thinking about Jake whilst eating a chocolate orange would produce the same volcanic effect to be honest :DD

Oh Lordy, now I need to find an all night petrol station for a chocolate fix.

I' love to carry his books too, Sheba, whilst discussing philosophy. These days I've been limited to kitchen philosophy :D

OMG, you have no chocolate?! You must find some!

What are the odds? While reading this post, I was chomping on some chunks of a delicious Lindt chocolate bar filled with figs and caramel... Didn't imagine the post would feature chocolate too :)

I was vaguely aware too of the chocolate cake making an appearance in that Brothers scene, but I guess I was too enraptured with Jake's acting (and the sight of muscles protruding from under his T-shirt...), to pay too much attention to the way the cake slices changed from one shot to the next...

If the news is true, I am pleased Jake might want to resume his university studies...

Great pictures!! Thank you.

Happy New Year, WDW!

Hey Paola! That is an excellent point - there were indeed muscles in that Brothers scene and they were extremely distracting and as tasty as chocolate. I must have kept 90% of my so-called brain on Jake and the rest of the cake slices. I also recall that Tommy was focusing on the pizza while Sam concentrated on the cake. Huge will power from Tommy and shows that he was making the character change to reliable brother.

Happy New Year! Enjoy the choccie (even though it's got figs in it...)

This post (and the comments to it) are making me hungry!! I can't eat chocolate yet...I haven't had dinner yet. I'll be having pasta with meat sauce (sorry WDW) and a nice Cabernet. Now I think I'll have to dig in to that box of chocolate covered cherries I got in my stocking (my favorite) for dessert thanks to this post! So much for being good!

Oh...and I'm watching Brokeback Mountain tonight...because it's time. *heavy sigh*

I saw the blurbs with the 'going back to college' reference this morning and wondered if that was a quote from years ago...I'm thinking it is. Like you said, WDW, no clue as to when and what context he said this. I think it's a fine idea (and I do like him back in NYC if that's where he chooses to go). I think there are a variety of benefits to having him out of LA for a while ;-) One problem...if it messes up with his movie making schedule that would not make me happy. I'm greedy. I want more Jake movies. More, more, more!

I'm done whining now. Happy January 2010 all (I'm lovin' it so far)!

:-)

Enjoy your dinner, BBMISwear :-) I have a rather nice Cabernet too - goes well with the chocolate fizzy orange!

I do find it strange that this quote has just appeared out of nowhere although it seems slightly different from quotes I know. And it's odd the Mirror have printed it like this. But who knows? I'd much rather have idle chatter about Jake's education than some of the other rubbish!

Enjoy the chocolate cherries - they'll go well with Brokeback. It's time for me to see that too. This evening I've been having a very quiet time in the company of Benjamin Button :)

What a delicious post, WDW. Just when I planned to swear off sweets for awhile you come along and tempt me chocolate and more chocolate. Add to that, a mention that Jake was recently spotted at Sprinkles. I haven't been there in forever but I am going to LA next week to see a play. A detour to Beverly Hills might be in order.

I always get a chuckle out of that "school boy" Jake picture. :)

Happy New Year!

Dani

Hi there Dani! I know, I'm such a bad influence - chuckle :D Get down to Sprinkles and check out the banana ones, they're my favourite. I can't remember the chocolate marshmallow ones. Enjoy the play!

Morning everyone! I hope you all have a relaxing Sunday - last day of freedom.... gulp.

Mmmmm...Jake and chocolate and cupcakes. What a yummy post. I just got up, can I eat a cupcake for breakfast and blame you? Or maybe I'll be more reasonnable and put chocolate peanut butter on my bagel. :)

I have a recipe for chocolate chip zuchini cake that is excellent. You don't really taste the zuchini in it and you can have a bigger piece because you're eating vegetables ! :D

Am I the only one who went awwwww after reading about the doggie cupcakes? Lucky Atti! :)

I'll be watching BBM on the 22nd. I always watch it the first friday after my BBM anniversary (because I need a recovery day after), which is the 19th. I can't believe it'll be 4 years since my first viewing and 2 years since Heath left us.

You can have tag for "chocolate", that is so cute :)

Jake wanting to finish his degree doesn't mean he's going to do that right away. I think he's still tied up with quite a few possible projects. I think when you're so close to finish your degree, you'd always want to revisit it at some time in your life.

I love chocolate fondue!!! well, I love cheese fondue too. But strawberries and figs dip into chocolate fondue is something else. The perfect dessert to share with Jake - lesser chance of him noticing when we are drooling... *g*

More Jake and chocolates for you in the new year!

I just got up and there's more chocolate talk! How can a girl be good with all this chocolate talk?!?!

I noticed here that Olympia and I tend to have things in common. When I read that you always watch BBM on the Friday after your anniversary, Olympia, and this year that is January 22nd my heart skipped a beat. I use to watch it each year on my anniversary too, but my anniversary is January 22nd. :-( I watched it in the morning in 2008 that day (a weird time but it's just how it worked out for some reason). Little did I know that as I watched what was going on for Heath that morning. I have to say I use to love my BBM anniversary...now I hate it. It was wonderful to be up on that mountain again last night, simply wonderful. *heavy sigh*

Sorry to go on with this. This is such a happy post too! I'll get my mind going in a better direction now, I Swear! :-)

If the quote is true ....
Very good to know that he thinks to complete his studies.
I would love to be part of this class. I love philosophy, religion ...

After midnight of the new year, I got sick with stomach problems.
I went to the doctor and he told me that I'm with gastritis.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Olympia! OMG did I hear you say 'chocolate peanut butter'??? Eeuuuggghhhh! I feel faint... I'd like to taste your choccie zucchini bread :D We should get Jake to make his and then do a tasting!

Hi there Winterbird :D I tend to think that degrees are better as a memory... I personally can't see Jake going back to do this now but that doesn't mean that he won't in the future. Problem would be, he'd probably have to start at the beginning again! I agree that his schedule is (hopefully!) too busy right now. I wonder if Jake remembers talking about studying while on set.

OMG, I love chocolate fondues! With fruit and marshmallows. I could eat that right now - with Jake would be good...

Hi BBMISwear! Don't be good, give in to it :-)

These anniversaries - I can't believe how the time goes. Mine is the 29th. Four years. I don't know if I'm nostalgic for that time as it wasn't at all easy but I do know how much I've enjoye and love the time since and that's what I'm going to celebrate when the date comes round. 22 January is, of course, Brothers day here but there'll be so many thoughts and love for Heath too. We do get our doses of high emotion, don't we?!

Go and have some chocolate *)

Monica, I'm so sorry you're poorly. Do take it easy and possibly don't eat any chocolate. I've studied philosophy too, western not eastern. Feel better :)

I do not know if it will be the beginning of the footage or a preparation for filming. Perhaps one training.

Wet dark, the pain was unbearable. It seemed that I was tearing inside.

How horrible that your BBM anniversary is on the 22, BBMISwear! I thought the 19 was bad... I try to think of my annual January viewing as an hommage to Heath as well as my BBM anniversary. It helps me remember how great an actor he was and how grateful I am that he gave us Ennis.

WDW, what`s so horrible about chocolate peanut butter? It's not my favorite thing but it's good. :D I will gladly bake you a cake if you bring Jake over. We'll have a cook off. :DD

So sorry you've been sick, Monica, I hope you're feeling better. :)

Olympia

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Monica :) Yes, Duncan's been tweeting about going to Montreal to start pre-production. I hope Jake is sorting out his winter woollies! I hope you feel better very soon.

Hey Olympia! Peanut butter and I have an agreement not to get within 100 miles of each other. How can you do that to the poor innocent chocolate??? What's it done to you to deserve immersion in peanut butter?

That's such a good way to think of BBM and the anniversary :)
