It might not have escaped your attention, but I am a Jake Gyllenhaal fan. I know... I hide it well. However, through all the hoopla of the Oscars, the centre of it all for Jake was his sister Maggie and so I want to start this second recap of Oscar night with this fabulous photo from the Vanity Fair party.
More videos of Jake Gyllenhaal have emerged today including this backstage interview between Jake, the gorgeous Rachel McAdams and Nate Berkus. Apart from learning from Jake that presenters traditionally swap possessions (in this case, Jake got the purse and Rachel got Jake's wallet - I like this tradition - or else Rachel is a pickpocket), Jake is also asked what Heath Ledger's absence from the Oscars means to him. Quite apart from the fact that Heath was never a fan of awards ceremonies, one must also wonder about the timing of such a question, and yet Nate appears sincere and Jake is touchingly open to him about how this question took him by surprise. In celebrating Maggie's nomination this year, how could Jake not miss his own co-star, Maggie's co-star and last year's winning best actor, so obviously absent? It's a touching interview, mixing sadness with exuberance and a dress with a mind of its own (and Robin Williams).
Updated to add: Rachel did check her bag afterwards, one wonders if Jake checked his wallet... (Thanks to Monica for the heads up on this great photo!)
In another video from the red carpet, there's a chance to get a sense of the chaos of the occasion with questions coming from every angle. In this case, Jake reveals that his dates are his sister and brother-in-law, who, it must be said, could have done a lot worse...
And the view from the other side. I love the cut of Jake's suit (and hair for that matter).
Vera Farmiga was asked about her forthcoming role In Source Code and she revealed that she has yet to get her head round it, with her part not beginning shooting until April. It is, she tells us, 'a complicated plot'. This means I will have to engage my sense when I see this film - a challenge.
In the picture above, Rachel is clearly telling the father of her child, and some innocent Oscar winning bystander, a dirty joke. The photographer took the blame for it.
Pictures with thanks from IHJ and links.

You ARE a Jake Gyllenhaal fan? Wow, I never noticed!!!
I am catching up with all the videos from Sunday now!!!
And now there's another load of vids to watch!
Thank you so much for another lovely post and for always making more out of all the good Jake stuff than just putting one video or pic next to the other...
That interview with Nate Berkus really was interesting. Rachel McAdams and Jake seemed to get along really well and looked like they had a lot of fun together. There was such a lightness with them... And then the Heath question. Well, one day it had to happen, but it looked like Jake was okay with it after the initial surprise...
To see Jake so lively and sweet and hot and, oh well, just jakeish, makes me so happy! I guess, I might be a little bit of a Jake fan, too...
Have a great evening everybody!!!
What a great picture of Maggie. thanks.
She was so happy.
It was an inappropriate question to Jake. I froze in time when he asked about Heath.
They were having fun and suddenly he changes to a serious question. You see and feel the sadness in the eyes and voice of Jake.
I felt for Jake.
Hey Uli! Yeah, I am! You could tell?? I'm glad you're able to catch up now.
Rachel and Jake are just lovely together and this idea of swapping things is just lovely - I love a man who'll carry my bag :D I'll willingly take care of his wallet....
The Heath question was asked completely out of the blue - how would a friend react to such a question on a night when he was there so happy for his sister? But he answered it so well.
Jake was definitely Jakeish on this big night - makes me so happy too! Yep, we are Jake fans - it shows :D
Hey there Monica! The question was out of place - although I think it was sincerely asked - but the emotion was perfectly plain on Jake's face. It was the wrong night for it, that's for sure.
The picture of Maggie is just wonderful!! I love her joy and I love how Jake and Peter were there for her. Now all we need is an Oscar nomination for Peter!
I echo Uli and hope everyone's having a good evening :D
I love this pic of Maggie, it's so much fun. :)
I feel mixed about the question - on the one hand, I froze in time just like Monica said when I heard it, and then on the other, I suppose the questions would be asked sometime, it had to happen as Uli said. He handled well - he didn't coldly brush it off, he answered it as best he could. I think it was a sincerely asked question also.
Perfectly said, Anon (I'd love a name to know you by too), I agree with every word you say :D
Jake seemed genuinely surprised by the Heath question. Very honest and touching response too. I almost had a lump in my throat when he said, "he should be here, but he's not".... :(
I also liked his interview with Ryan Seacrest (sp?), they seem to have rapport... I normally don't like Ryan (don't you think he always shouts? lol), but he's great with jake. Or i guess Jake brings out the best of everyone?!?
Wet Dark, Rachel is checking her bag: backstage
Me too, Winterbird...
I don't know Ryan, but this was a good interview, Jake thought so too. But who wouldn't fall for Jake?!
Love that, Monica! Updated the post :D Thanks!
I just love Jake's sense of humor and his love for his sister. When the chips are down they have each other.
thanks for all the pics and videos
sweetpea
Wow, I am in a bit of shock over the Heath question but Jake handled it in a really touching and honest way, as Winterbird mentioned. Nate really did spring that on him and I am glad he kind of apologized because you could tell Jake wasn't expecting it. Jake is a total class act!
I think the other part of the video is adorable with him and Rachel, her dress getting tangled, Robin Williams, etc. :)
Can't stop squeeing at the pics, videos, etc, etc.....SQUEE!! :D
And my word is brava! :)
Also, have to agree in the lump in my throat with Jake's comments about Heath not being there....:(
Thanks, Sweetpea :D I do agree!
Get Real - that is so well put :) Jake really is a class act. It caught me, like everyone else (including Jake) by surprise but the way that he dealt with it...
And the dress bit was just lovely! I can see that Jake's concerns about Rachel or himself tripping up in it were well-founded!
Good word! Mine is 'verio', which I rather like :)
Wow, its all so exciting! Thank you for these wonderful updates.
I watched that video with Nate first in the office, so I had to have the sound muted - and Jake's body language is really interesting. He went completely still, whereas before he was waving his arms around as usual, being Jakish! I thought he answered as best he could and it was all obviously a surprise. I like the comment someone left on the video too.
What an incredible Oscars this has been! And Maggie was just beautiful. Her dress was definitely the best. I loved watching them have their picture taken in the the background of the Oscars.com video - and you can see Peter's bald (!)head too.
Fabulous.
TD
So sad about Heath. When he was still alive i was looking forward to see him and Jake in a movie again. :(
Despite his death, Heath will stay one of may favourite actors.
Good God, there are many Rachel and Jake fans out there. Even though they are cute together, I still have a soft spot for him and my darling Anne Hathaway. ;)
Another great Oscar post WDW:)
OMG my heart stood still when I heard the interviewer ask that question about Heath. I think Jake's face said it all but he handled it well after the initial shock.
I couldn't stop thinking watching the ceremony on Sunday how Heath should have been presenting the best supporting actress award that Robin Williams presented.
On a lighter note Jake and Rachel looked fab together. He looks better than ever at the moment. If this is the SC look then I love it already:)
Hi TD! I always love watching Jake's body language :D Maggie's dress was definitely the best, such a lovely colour and fit. I'm hoping Peter may grow his hair a bit after this new comic book thing he's filming :)
Well said, Jake Fan :) Oh no! Now I'm conflicted... I love Jake and Anne but now I love Jake and Rachel too?! Dilemmas...
Hi Carol! Posting at the same time :) That is so true and clearly Jake would agree with you too. Heath should have presented that award and Jake would have known that too and here he was being reminded of it... although he handled it so well.
I'm loving the SC look too! And Rachel fitted right in :D Duncan, are there any roles going...? But seriously, the full gamut of emotion here.
BEAUTIFUL job of reporting,as usual, WDW. Thanks so much!
Watched Secretary tonight, what a fine film. Maggie look'd ravishing last night. Regal! Sis and bro always a delight to see together.
Every time the camera showed Christopher Plummer, I thought about Heath Ledger. I wanted to see Plummer get an Oscar for his wonderful work in "The Last Station" and "Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus." I also thought of Heath during that film clip from "Crazy Heart" where Colin Farrell was singing the song that won the Oscar. Colin stole the show in "Imaginarium." I just plain think about Heath and the enormous incalculable loss that he and we have suffered.
I look at Maggie and think about how she has blossomed since "Donnie Darko." She herself has said that her experience as a mother came in very handy when she was filming "Crazy heart." I think Jeff Bridges is a good judge of talent, and I hope he does more movies with her.
Anne Hathaway has blossomed since "Brokeback Mountain." There's a deepening of her art now, but she hasn't lost any of the quality that makes audiences root for her.
Morning all!
Thank you so much Pia and GREAT to see you! I hope things are good with you *)
Lovely comment, Paul, thanks :) We've not heard much at all about Colin Farrell in these films - I'll be interested to see him in Crazy Heart too. And Christopher Plummer is just superb. There are so many reminders about Heath.
Over the last couple of years Maggie has really begun to shine. For me, it's since Away We Go, which is, of course, when she'd just become a mother; it's clearly affected her very much and she has blossomed.
Anne is simply wonderful (except in Bride Wars :DD) - her career will go on and on...
Have a good day everyone!

The best thing about the Heath question, in my opinion, was Jake acknowledging that it's the guy's job to ask. It shows that he knows these types of questions will be asked and it's all part of the industry they work in. A major disappointment to me is that the person that finally got to ask Jake about Heath in a situation that it would be recorded for the public to hear was asked by a person, again in my opinion, that worded the question horribly. He asked about Heath's presence at the Oscars instead of about Heath himself. What's next, a study of ghosts of movies past haunting the Kodak theater? I wish a real good, qualified, veteran interviewer were the one to ask Jake about Heath and it was done in a more appropriate setting. Out of my control so I should probably let it go. Jake handled it with class, no surprise there. A tough video to watch.
Hi WDW & all,
great addition to the part 1 post with great new pix and videos.
I agree with some who said Nate Berkus questioning Jake about Heath was well-meant, but I can't help but thinking it was in the wrong context and situation, which in the end kind of cheapened the impact and significance.
Jake was surprised, but he was kind and respectful in his reply. I'll always marvel at how Jake can handle these unexpected awkward moments with class. He didn't shy away and acknowledged it was the guy's work to ask these sorts of questions, and he also showed sincere emotion in what he said and the tone of his voice (I also liked Rachel's expression at that moment).
I agree with BBMIswear too that the question could have been worded much better or perhaps should have been left to a more experienced interviewer, in a different context. OK it was the Oscars and Heath had won last year, but I just felt very uncomfortable listening to his question that just focused on Heath's absence at this year's Oscars. As I said, I just think it was probably down to the interviewer's inexperience that the question came out that way, but he didn't seem to purposely want to make Jake uncomfortable, or be dismissive of Heath's achievements.
Thank you :)

PHOTOBOMB!
I do know what you mean, BBMISwear - This would never be the place of time for such a question. I do admire the way Jake dealt with it - with a great deal of feeling. But of course Heath would be missed the year after he won his own award. Jake doesn't need to be told that.
Hey there Paola! I do think that the question was sincerely meant but it was so out of the blue and so out of place, it just stuns. But Jake did a good job with it and I liked Rachel's expression too.
Thanks for the link, Anon! Very funny :D
So much going on! New post :D
Oh, Rachel McAdams. Oh, to be that dress... Oh, Maggie G. That's a miracle of engineering you've got on there.
(minds wanders for a bit, while stupid grin spreads across Rob's face)
Aaaanyway. Just wanted to say hi, and to point out that I wandered in through the new back door, your Facebook fan page:

Nicely done, that girl. Nicely done.
Well, thank you, kind rabbit :D I'm so glad you like it - I got the idea from this bloke in the pub last week...
Lovely Rachel, lovely Maggie G... what about Jake?? eh??
He's OK if you like that sort of thing :D
(note to self: stop winding up the nice webmistress. Bad rabbit.)
