Jake Gyllenhaal: Actor, Movie Star, Heart throb - WDW Guide Part I

One of the delights of Prince of Persia is that it's introduced a whole bunch of potential Gyllenhaalics-in-the-making to Jake Gyllenhaal. It's hard to see how anyone can resist but, nevertheless, it should be pointed out, that once one has dived into the cool nectar pool of Gyllenism, you won't want to pull the plug out. So, as a big welcome to all the new readers and commentors here at WDW, many of whom are now discovering Jake's earlier films for the first time, here is Part I of the WDW crib sheet to Jake Gyllenhaal's movies. Do feel free to disagree with my comments in the comment section )which may now actually be working...).

Title: City Slickers
Date: 1991
Role: Danny Robbins

Hotness: NA
Mascara-proof? Yes, unless you're really broody
Chemistry: NA
Hair: 5/10
Bonus features: Shoulder-popping

As a mere nipper, Jake Gyllenhaal semi-starred in the very successful film City Slickers as the attention-seeking, cute son of Billy Crystal, who left his father in no doubt that the only way he could ever be seen in public with him again is if he became a cowboy. As John Stewart once said, this was Jake's first cowboy movie, although, for me, this film will always be known to me as Blazing Saddles. I always get them muddled up. Billy Crystal has since said that Jake entertained the cast and crew with Show Tunes, heralding the beginning of Jake's side-career as set comic.

WDW rating: 8/10 (although that could be due to Blazing Saddles)

Title: October Sky
Date: 1999
Role: Homer Hickam

Hotness: Developing
Mascara-proof? Semi-waterproof mascara required
Chemistry: NA (although Laura Dern looked keen)
Sex scenes: NA (but Laura Dern looked keen)
Hair: 7/10
Bonus features: Good science and plenty of dirt

October Sky gave Jake his first lead role. Still at college and reading literary classics between scenes, Jake starred as a coal miner's lad who looked to the stars to avoid his fate beneath the ground. In this role, Jake made an astronaut who'd been to the moon cry. Without doubt, this is one of Jake's finest roles and I defy you to stay dry-eyed when the young Homer faces up to his fate and gets into that coal lift. This was the first effective use in a movie of Jake's blue eyes - a heart throb in the making and a fine actor to boot. One of my favourites.

WDW rating: 8/10

Title: Donnie Darko
Date: 2001
Role: Donnie Darko

Hotness: 5/10
Mascara-proof? No (although you may not understand why you're crying and it may be at the wrong bit)
Chemistry: 6/10 (Jenna Malone)
Hair: 7/10
Sex scenes: Donnie was too stressed
Bonus features: rabbits, smurfs, Halloween

The film that Jake is asked about more than any other, Donnie Darko is the most confusing film ever made and no one has a clue what it's about, including Richard Kelly, from whose mind it sprang, and Jake. It is quite possible that the only person who knows what's going on is an IT officer that I worked with in 2004. When prompted Jake can deliver some great transcendental background but the delight of Donnie Darko is that it doesn't really matter. The end is painful, heightened by Donnie's sister being played by Jake's sister, and Maggie has said that when filming the final scenes she and Jake kept apart to keep the emotion raw. The soundtrack is excellent - never has Duran Duran been used to such great effect. This film was not a 'commercial success' (it opened in the US just days after 9/11) but it continues to win over new fans and in the UK especially has been a big success. I can't think of any other film that can be argued over quite like this one or treasured quite like it. First of the great Jake commentaries.

WDW rating: 10/10

Title: Bubble Boy
Date: 2001
Role: Jimmy Livingston

Hotness: 2/10
Mascara-proof? No (father and son scenes are very moving)
Chemistry: 4/10 (Marley Shelton) Jake had a thing for Ever Carradine
Sex scenes: No sex before marriage
Hair: 0/10
Bonus features: underpants, Bubble Guinea Pig, dinosaurs

Nothing divides the modern world quite like Bubble Boy. At times Jake has defended it, at other times he's brushed over it. But, without doubt, no Jake film has the power to make my sides hurt with laughter like this one. The script is fantastic, Jake's delivery of those lines is spot on, the supporting actors - notably Swoosie Kurtz and John Carroll Fynch (who arguably appears in every Jake film ever made) - are fabulous. Other elements to relish include the Bright and Shiney people, Jimmy trying to buy a bus ticket and the stealing the beer scene. And the cow. 'And then Pinocchio came out of his plastic bubble and touched the filthy little whore next door and died. The End!' 'Supper time was the best! Nothing could beat Mom's homemade, vitamin-rich, soy-based, germ-free, fat-free fiber cookies.' Last but not least, Bubble Boy features my favourite Jake Gyllenhaal commentary: Jake and director Blair Hayes were made to be a double act. Some people think this film is rubbish - they are, of course, wrong.

WDW rating: 9/10

Title: Lovely & Amazing
Date: 2001
Role: Jordan

Hotness: 5/10
Mascara-proof? Yes
Chemistry: 5/10 (Catherine Keener)
Sex scenes: kiss in a car
Hair: 5/10
Bonus features: bad shirts, photography tips

Lovely & Amazing was the first in a stretch of films when Jake appeared as an older woman's lovetoy, plaything and sex object. The downside of this arrangement was that Jake did not appear in these films enough, with much of the attention focusing on the inner turmoil of the older woman in question. Meanwhile, Jake's character was left in the dark(room) quite a lot of the time. Catherine Keener was a great match for Jake here and, of course, they were later to team up again (although not romantically) in the film that may never be but one hopes it will be, Nailed. Not a bad film by any means, this film is, however, penalised as Jake wasn't in it very much.

WDW rating: 5/10

Title: The Good Girl
Date: 2002
Role: Possibly Holden

Hotness: 5/10
Mascara-proof? No
Chemistry: 9/10 (Jennifer Aniston)
Sex scenes: Yes (Jen's first)
Hair: 5/10
Bonus features: swimming, accents, car interiors

This is a film that grows on me whenever I see it, which, admittedly, isn't very much as I've only seen it twice. Again we have a film where Jake is taken under the wing of an older woman - although as the woman is Jen Aniston, this can hardly be seen as detrimental. This film isn't particularly light and should not be watched sober. It also had the peculiar side-effect of putting me off American shops for a while. Other people rave about this film. Other people also rave about Jake's hair in this film. This film does, though, have the potential of being a great tragedy (depending on how sober one is).

WDW rating: 6/10

Title: Highway
Date: 2002
Role: Pilot

Hotness: ?
Mascara-proof? ?
Chemistry: ?
Sex scenes: ?
Hair: ?
Bonus features: Goggles, alligators, glove puppets

How to describe Highway....? I can't, despite having seen it on a number of occasions, and therefore I called on the world's leading expert on Highway, Ruby, known throughout Jakedom for her 'Pilot thing'. And I quote: 'Jake's character is called Pilot! And he's the major old-school happener :D Pilot is adorable. John C McGinley plays a long-haired middle-aged stoner called Johnny the Fox. Piii-lot. He's adorable and sexually confused. Jake has a spider painted on his face. He's searching for the "once in a lifetime girl of my dreams and reason to believe" Pilot is adorable. It has an alligator boy. um.....Pilot is adorable.' And there you have it. I have to add that the eyes have it in Highway.

WDW rating: 6/10; Ruby rating: 10/10

Title: Moonlight Mile
Date: 2002
Role: Joe Nast

Hotness: 8/10
Mascara-proof: No. Don't wear it!
Chemistry: 10/10 (Ellen Pompeo)
Sex scenes: Hot
Hair: 5/10
Bonus features: New England scenery, post office, dog

Moonlight Mile marked a change in Jake's career. Still the young man, at the beck and call of his elders and betters, he nevertheless showed that he could hold a film tightly together and the camera loved him. Dustin Hoffman, Susan Sarandon and Holly Hunter - fine actors - and yet the camera loved Jake. This was Ellen Pompeo's break and the chemistry was bound to sizzle - her casting followed her encounter with Jake in an LA carpark when he told her that she was the most beautiful girl he'd ever seen. The power and emotion of Joe Nast's scenes are matched every step by the power and emotion of Bertie's. This film contains the most emotional of all Jake's lines for me - 'I lost my friend' - and I could wrap myself up in the big, comfy brown blanket that is Moonlight Mile and I would wallow in it. There's a strange mix here of suffocating brown earth and big blue sky - perfect.

Another great soundtrack (Rolling Stone's Moonlight Mile will tear your heart out) and another great commentary.

WDW Rating: 10+/10

End of Part 1: After Moonlight Mile, there could be little doubt that Jake Gyllenhaal was a name to watch (even if one couldn't spell it). No longer would he be the distraction in a story of women facing crises in their lives - Jake had a couple more steps to take and then he would be in the lead. I have no doubt that there are many who would disagree with some of my views above - so I would love to hear what you think.

Note: The films above are presented in IMDb order of release.

Includes pictures from IHJ. Thanks to Ruby for the Pilot input!

"the big, comfy brown blanket that is Moonlight Mile"

I echo your sentiments exactly on that film WDW. I can never get enough of it.

That and Zodiac are probably my favourite of Jake's films.

Linda said...

I love all those movies :D
it's hard to pick just one but I guess my favorite are highway and the good girl, or maybe bubble boy hahaha
this is nuts!
Love all Jake's films :)
have a sweet day :) or night? lol

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Carol! I couldn't agree more - I can wrap myself up in Moonlight Mile - and Zodiac has such a pull on me - love it.

There is a lot more to come in part 2 - I realised that it's a long time since we just sat and chatted about these amazing films!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Linda! Posting at the same time :D That's the great thing about Jake's films - there's something for everyone and so we all love them differently. I'm definitely with you on Bubble Boy. Good Girl irritates me a little while Highway is for Ruby, not for me :D I loved watching it with Ruby and Anouska once, though :D

Carol said...

I watched Zodiac again the other night for the first time in ages. I agree there is just something about that movie that has a pull on me too.

It's probably the only movie of Jake's apart from Jarhead that both myself and my OH agree on.

Linda said...

yay! :D
yes you're right :)
we all enjoy Jake's movies in our very personal way :-) that's what makes it magical.

TD said...

This is a brilliant sum up so far, WDW. I agree with most of your ratings, though I have to say I can ONLY watch Jake's tiny 2 1/2 scences in the whole of 'Lovely and Amazing'. I think the rest of the film is simply dreadful - one long unsympathetic whinge from start to finish. If this is an advert for sisterhood, sisters, please stay off my side! I do quite like 'Highway' though.

The best thing about all (almost) of Jake's films IMHO is that they grow on you and are better with repeated viewings.

On another topic: Madame Tussauds UK apparently does not have a Jake figure as presumably if it did it would feature in the top 10 most kissed wax figures: a top 10 that includes Johnny Depp.

I think I am glad that they don't [have a wax of Jake] - Madame Tussauds sums up excessively boring school trip memories for me.

OMG I loved this!! I was saying so many things out loud as I read each and every recap!! Too much to type so I won't bore you with all my comments for each and every movie listed here but I think you already know that I've watched every single one of these many, many times and love them all for so many different reasons. But all those question marks next to Highway?! I freaking love Highway and adore Pilot and am so glad Ruby stepped in to help! Phew! I think you know how I feel about Moonlight Mile and Brad S. so no need to go on and on about that (AGAIN) - ha ha! Oh I just love them all.

Thanks for the first part of the recap - the new Gyllenhaalics should absolutely use this guide as they watch the old films and if anyone lives near me feel free to come borrow from my Jake movie library. Hell, I even have A Dangerous Woman, Josh and S.A.M. and Homegrown for those 'very young Jake cameo appearances'. I know...I can get a bit carried away at times! Not my fault. :-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh how I love Zodiac, Carol, and Jarhead too! But of these early films, Moonlight Mile is it :D (backed up by Donnie Darko and Moonlight Mile - with a touch of October Sky - just can't make up my mind).

Definitely Linda!

Hi there TD! Thank you! I do agree about Lovely & Amazing - I like the Jake scenes and I sometimes like some of the other scenes but I do get very irritated by it.

Jake's films definitely grow on you. For me, Moonlight Mile and Good Girl are proof of that. Now I adore MMile, while Bubble Boy was an instant hit with me. And October Sky. Donnie Darko just got me straight off. That's the film I first met Jake in :D

I love that about the wax figures! A wax figure of Jake would never do him justice.

Hey BBMISwear :-) Good to see you now you're back home! I didn't know you were such a Highway fan too :D That film has some serious devotees and they're among my most favourite people in the world so that must say a lot for Pilot.

I've not see A Dangerous Woman and SAM - can't get hold of them. I should ask you for a review!

Great post!
One thing I gotta disagree on is the hotness rating. Sure, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and yes I am known for my weird taste in general, but I find Jake very very hot as Donnie Darko, Holden and yes, I admit it, Bubble Boy.

Ruby said...

Pilot is adorable, that's all you need to know about Highway. The rest of the movie doesn't matter. :D

I've never been that keen on The Good Girl myself. Bubble Boy is enjoyable but it would be low on my list of ones to watch again. MM, DD and October Sky are ones I like a lot.

LadyEkster said...

Oooh! Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! What a great post this is.
I am in the proces of admitting to myself that I am a new Jake addict, though I've tried my best to keep my head cool and think 'this is just one of your many temporary crushes'. It clearly isn't...

I agree with everything you've written except for one thing: I don't like Moonlight Mile one bit. I've switched it off halfway and haven't yet found the enthusiasm to watch the second half. *goes to hide under the couch*

TD said...

Hmmmm Donnie... One of the few things, along with the original PoP game, to be thankful for brothers for ;D

I'm watching 'Mockingbird' right now on BBC 4. Go Atticus!

We need some proper ratings for Highway:

Hotness: 6/10 (he's still a little young)
Adorableness: 10/10
Mascara-proof: Yes, unless you are a big Curt Cobain fan.
Chemistry: Yes, pharmaceuticals definitely feature.
Sex scenes: it's complicated.
Hair: sticky up, 7/10

Great post, WDW!

I had to pop back in after reading comments from the other day when blogger wasn't working - you guys were cracking me up (I think I'm over tired - ha ha)! WDW and Olympia discussing Chris' tomato had me in stitches! Now I feel bad that I left it at the hotel and MUST go back and buy another (or maybe a few). I promise I will report back on how good it is next time!! And thanks for the trip wishes while I was in Montreal, Olympia...I thought of you as I do when I go to Canada! One of these times I need to make it to your area and look you up.

Yes, WDW...I'm a Pilot lover! You must not remember that I was one of the few people that voted for Pilot in the Most Sexy Jake Character Other Than Jack Twist Poll!! I'm guessing Ruby was one of the other people who did so?! Good times, good times! Oh I really need some sleep - getting punchy here! :-)

Anonymous said...

LadyEkster, I remember feeling like that a year ago when a friend told me
"You know they're making a movie on your favorite game?"
"What? Who?? What???"
"POP, Disney, Jake Gyllenhaal's playing him"
"WHAT?? That other guy from BBM?"
"Yeah, apparently he looks good at it"
"Whatever."
Then I went home and found the behind the scenes pictures of Jake training and thought "Oh crap, he does look good. Oh crap, I'll have to watch BBM again now and stop focusing on Heath only. Oh major crap, I'll have to give in to that guy from college who kept saying I was an idiot for not seeing Donnie Darko and now I'll have to see it"...
The rest is history as they say, and here I am now...

BBMISwear said...

Okay, I obviously can't drag myself away because now Ruby is back talking about Piolt! Agreed on the 10/10 Adorableness but I must find adorable *young* guys sexy as he's a 10/10 sexy to me!! As for chemistry...OMG Jake and Jared had soooo much chemistry in this film. I expected *something* to happen if you know what I mean. It really is disappointing that this film did not become more than it did. I remember mentioning to Jake when I met him that people don't talk that much about this movie and he barely let me finish my sentence before saying "because it went straight to DVD" with a smirk! I got the impression he's not a huge Highway fan but I sure am! I also know it's not for everyone...I've turned a lot of family and friends on to Jake movies but no one has quite gotten this one yet. I'll keep trying. (I'll have to watch it with Rubes when I finally make my way over the pond)!

Okay, I'm really done now (I think). :-)

TD said...

I agree with Ruby's 'Highway' ratings. Yes, he's still a little young in all these.

Lena = actress = DC forum ?? Jaking again, huh?

TD

LadyEkster said...

@Lena: LOL! Thank you for that. ;-) It's - to use a Jake word - amazing how we all have our different stories of ending up being a Jake fan. Great! :-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Lena! I love that about Jake films - how we all have our levels of hotness and Jake fits in at just the right place for each of us!

Yeay, Lady Ekster! Don't fight it - just give in to it! I've never had a thing before like this Jake thing and it's lasted years! My next closest to it was Colin Farrell for 2 weeks! No worries about not caring for Moonlight Mile, we can all agree to disagree on our favourite Jake films :D

Hey Rubes! I love Bubble Boy and I watch it quite often (with the commentary). Not cos Jake is hot in it but because he's so funny! But agreed about Good Girl!

Hi TD!I Saw that was on tonight and thought of Jake!

Thanks for the resorted ratings, Rubes! I like the 'complicated' - it most certainly was.

Hey, good to see you back, BBMISwear :-) Oh the tomato guilt... We have to get back to that farm and buy and eat an entire salad.

I should point out to people that I did buy a t-shirt at the farm and I do indeed wear it!

I'd forgotten that about the poll. Ahhh, Pilot :D

Love that comment, Lena!!! I loved DDarko (although didn't fall for Jake in it, just the wonderful film). Then I went to see TDAT as I heard Jake was in it and then fell for him completely. Then I saw BBM because of TDAT and that was it. There's just no fighting it :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ooh more posts at the same time :D

I think, BBMISwear, that maybe Jake and I think the same about Hughway :D I like that! But it really does grab some people. When you get over here we must definitely have a Highway and Moonlight Mile session :D Rubes' place is the perfect setting for Jake viewings :)

TD agreeing with Rubes too! I thought I'd be outnumbered on Highway!

It is great, Lady Ekster, and it makes me smile from ear to ear :)

The movies Jake has been in show his versatility as an actor.

From drama and good guy in October Sky, great comic timing in Bubble Boy, wired teen in Highway, a subtle and convinvcing performance in the likeable Donnie Darko, a slightly dark and disturbed character with a convincing accent in The Good Girl (I thought the movie was really well done), and a wistful charmer in Moonlight Mile.

Your post reminded me, one Christmas I ordered all these Jake movies, relished as I unwrapped the package as my special Christmas present, then spent the holiday watching them on my computer as family life went on around me. Never enough Jake.

Highway surprised me the most, it was odd at times, like the alligator boy episode. And how cute he was in City Slickers! Oh and Jake is in Homegrown for about a second, with a dyed blond hairdo.

Thanks for the movie trip down memory lane, I look forward to more.

Cheers

Tui

Out of the movies presented in Part 1 the only one I didn't see is City Slickers.
I know that most people don't like Bubble Boy,but I found Jake's performance quite good(and the movie was in parts hilarious and in parts extremely touching).
Donnie Darko is one of my all time favorites.
I think that whatever the role Jake always manages to deliver a very strong performance.
I'm oscillating between October Sky and Moonlight Mile on my fave in this category, but I think October Sky is closer to my heart(I can identify myself with Homer most of the time).

Looking forward to Part 2.

How can you not love the hair in Bubble Boy during the wedding? BBM was epic but Bubble Boy made me fall in love with Jakey G. And the Mom was great. Best scene, the male awakening. Wonder if he used a stuntman for that scene?

Leslie said...

Hello all!

I've been MIA. Lurking everyday just not able to post as much.

WDW I love that you're doing a run down of all of Jake's films. I nearly agree with everything, except The Good Girl.

When I first saw that film right when it came out I didn't care for it much. Now that I'm older and I've watched it again I have a whole new appreciation for it. I think I get a lot of the humor now that I missed years ago. It's now one of my top three favorite Jake films.

Looking forward to the next installment..:)

Yep, there's no denying the Jake effect! I love hearing how other people fell for Jake!
It's funny how he seems to creep in slowly, you see him somewhere and remember him (because lets face it, his movies tend to be memorable), but then later on you see him in something else and then it just hits you out of nowhere, BAM, and suddenly you can't take your eyes off him. Then you go home and you can't stop thinking about him. Before you even realize it, Jake got you good. Amazing! like Jake would say :)

Oh, and TD, not sure I follow??

Hey. I'm from Argentina and I've been following your blog for a few days now...

I never had the courage to comment, cause I thought it was embarrasing... But today, I felt really identified with your post...

Let me tell you that I think this is one of the best "web pages" of Jake...

Like you and other people said, I can't get enough of this guy since PoP... What is it with this guy?! I'm not usually like this... But now, I can't spend a day without looking at a picture of him or an interview in youtube... God! XD

I don't know... I thought I kinda owe the comment cause I think you're doing a great job...

OK... I'm going to be a regular (maybe silent) visitor... I hope you understand what I'm trying to say... My English is not very good...

I'm gonna go watch 'Highway' now... (Oh, ya... Since PoP I've downloaded almost every movie he's been in... LOL). Seriously, I don't know what is it that he has that now I can't... Nevermind... You know what I mean... LOL.

I looove his smile!!! =D

OK, that's a little longer than I expected... So, bye!

this is such a good post, and I agree with Chemistry: 10/10 (Ellen Pompeo) in Moonlight Mile, a bit underrated in Jake's filmography!

Hi, quick fly by - just to say that this was a great idea... Could unfortunately only scan through the post, but from what I saw I know I will enjoy reading your take on all of Jake's movies once I have the time - even though I know all of them!
I hope everybody has a great jakey day!!

Cazajuguetes said...

Hi girls,

Yesterday was the DAY. I went to watch PoP.

My rating: SMASHING, SMASHING as Jake says in some interview.

This is the first movie I go to see in the big screen where he plays.

I really enjoyed it. And what can I say. Jake's close ups blew my mind.

Dubbing was not really that bad. It was played by the same dubbing actor as BBM.

Now, I really have to find and buy Jarhead. I'd would certainly would love to borrow from BBMISwear, but I think I'm really far from you.

I'm "hooked" girls. ;-)

Morning all! Great to see you all here :D

Hi there Tui! That sounds like a fantastic Christmas present - all these films, all that Jake, tied up with a bow under the Christmas tree. I've not seen Homegrown, just the Jake clip - the hair - OMG, the hair...

Hello Annaeh and welcome! I love Bubble Boy, I'll always stand up for Jimmy Livingston. It's one of those films where I laugh just thinking about it. I know what you mean about October Sky - Homer is an incredible character. My family were all coal miners and so I empathise with his situation too.

Hey Jake Fan! oh, the Bubble Boy hair - it's certainly attention grabbing... I've never been a fan of the moptop look on Jake - he looks so young and sweet in the wedding scene :) Chuckling at the stunt wood.

Good to see you back, Leslie! I definitely think that good Girl is a grower. When I last saw it I enjoyed it much more but then I think about it afterwards and I'm depressed by it again. But I love Jen and Jake together - I'd like to see them do another film together - maybe one with a happy ending :D

That's spot on, Lena! Jake's films are memorable and he does make you go from film to film until before you know it you've fallen. The fact that Jake makes such interesting choices is part of why he's such a fine actor to follow. And he's hot. Amazing :)

Hi there Copycat! And welcome - I'm so glad you commented. Please don't feel embarrassed - everyone here feels the same and it's such a friendly place. I am really pleased you liked the post.

You've fallen for Jake just as we all have and I love how you and others are experiencing it now just as others of us did before. Many people fell for Jake because of Brokeback and as part of a very painful process and it's interesting to see the different experiences of people falling for Jake from different films.

I know just what you mean and I am so glad that you felt comfortable enough to comment - please don't worry about your English - it's great! Enjoy Highway and let us know what you think :D The smile is amazing :)

Good to see you Kendra!! Thanks very much for commenting and I'm so glad you liked the post. I'm totally with you about Ellen - I think she was wonderful in MM and the chemistry was intense.

Morning Uli! It is good hearing what everyone has to say about these films - I want to go away and watch them all again now. Have a good week :D

Yeay! Eureka, I'm so glad it was smashing! Knew you'd like it. And good to know the dubbing wasn't too bad. Seeing jake on the big screen is great, though, and it's something that I really missed during 2008 and 2009. You MUST watch Jarhead!!

So good to see old and new faces and to see the love for these wonderful early Jake movies :D

have a good dy!

Blimey, that was a long comment... Someone put the kettle on :)

WDW if you could find some of the pictures of Jake and Jennifer A. at the award for him and there was the one where they hugged and kinda danced for a second - Glaad awards maybe. Anyway, think some of the new people on the site would enjoy seeing those.

Don't esp. like "Highway" but think he is great as Pilot. You know watching him (and the last of his scenes in the movie) this is an exceptional actor.

Even in "Bubble Boy" reviews where the movie didn't get good ones it seems all the ones I saw did say Jake was good. What a great comic actor he is. His timing is perfect.
Been a while but looked at reviews on Amazon and people seemed to really enjoy it.

I described my experience in my debut in WDW on the 4th of july post comments. And I see yours was very similar. LOL
Is this the Jake EFFECT?...... I don't know.

I'm "hooked".

But I'm surely enjoying it!

I can't resist coming back to read the lovely comments on this lovely post. Kate, you have created a truly wonderful little community here over time. ;-)

@Lena: your comment about Jake hitting you out of nowhere is so very recognizable. :-) I've had the The Day After Tomorrow dvd for years without really noticing Jake other than 'kinda cute'. But then came PoP... and holey moley! ;-)

@Eureka: yay! So glad you got to see PoP! I'm sure you'll enjoy Jarhead too. It's not been out of my dvd player since I got it a couple of weeks ago. Great film!

Hi 13:06! There is a post on that in the archives - I'll try and dig it up. Those are among my favourite pics too. I agree about the end of Highway - it's very moving (even with the big spider...)

Hi Eureka! It is great to see other people have had the same experience :)

Thanks Lady Ekster! There have been some wonderful commentors here over the years, some have come and gone, but I do appreciate them all. It is a great community here. I'm very lucky :)

It's at times like these I remember my old Spooky twin - Twisted Logic - and I wonder what she's up to...

Hey, everybody... Well... Maybe I lied about "the silent visitor" part... XD But it's just because I loved your reply... I've commented before in other blogs but didn't get the warm response I did here... =) Thank you very much!

It's really funny how we all more or less had the same "Jake effect" someone said before... Some people here describe the way it happened exactly as it happened to me! I mean, I watched some movies with him in them and was like "Oh, he's OK...". But now... OMG! LOL!
I had to watch BBM again because the first time I watched it was because of Heath... XD And now I realise Jake's performance is so much better than Heath's. Though I'm not criticising the latter...

I couldn't watch Highway last night... But when I do I'll comment...

About his smile... I love the (how do you say it?) episode (?) of Ellen in which he's a guest and I watched it like... I don't know how many times... I loooove that "interview"... He's like "who cares if you're single, take your shirt off! Woohoo!", joking about how people didn't scream as loud when Ellen said he was single... And then at the end, he teaches Ellen some kind of "ritual" he learned in the Artic involving some weird gutural screaming... I just couldn't stop laughing! He's so cute ^.^ And I remember that episode and sometimes laugh alone while doing anything... He's just so funny! =)

And when he cooks! *drools* To me, guys win extra points if they know how to cook... He's just perfect... =D

OK... Looong post... I think I'm cathartic 'cause I can't share this things with nobody here... They don't understand... and think I'm crazy... Well, I am... LOL! Anyway... I promise I'll try to hold back a little... XD

See you! Thanks for reading...

I wanted to know if Rob Pattinson was as big in Europe as he is in America, I feel this guy is overrated both talent wise and box office wise. I feel as though he is getting parts that should go to actors with talent like Jake and Ryan Gosling.

I just wish he would go away fast.

Hey Copycat! No, don't hold back :D It's great to get a chance to know people a little better. I love the Ellen interviews! I was disappointed he didn't do another for PoP. very funny - loved the Inuit song :D

I know what you mean, though, it's not so easy keeping all the feelings in, and really you don't need to - that's what we're here for. I am so lucky that I'm able to go out Jaking in the evening, which I am tonight! Thanks for coming back :D

Hi Jake Fan! To be honest I don't know anyone who likes (or admits to liking) R Pattinson but I'm sure he's hugely popular with teens, maybe a bit less than in the US, even though he's British. Personally, I think that Jake is above and beyond any of the roles that Pattinson does - I've not wanted to see one of them. But each to his own :D

Copycat, you really don't need to hold back with us. :) We understand what you're going through, I'm not "out" as a gyllenhaalic to anyone in my real life, they would absolutely think I'm nuts. :D It's so great to have this place to share the Jake love. It's quite addictive. :)

WDW, love your Jake movie guide and can't wait for part 2. It's nice to see you know what's important to evaluate in a Jake movie: hotness and hair. :DDD

Oh god, the Inuit song on Ellen completely shattered me, really, to pieces, I was screaming. I mean no disrespect to the Inuit, but the way Jake and Ellen did that was hysterical, and then he collapsed on the sofa in hysterics himself, but I love how Ellen kept her composure and went "why'd you stop?" Like, how unprofessional of him, we're preforming here XD
I just adore Ellen, and then her with Jake are unstoppable, they make such a great comedic duo, the cooking was also insane! The way they talk to each other, talk over each other, randomly comment and make fun of, really, they should do comedy together. In fact, Jake is really a natural comedian I'm surprised he hasn't done a real all out comedy so far, something like Superbad, he'd be incredible!

And I see the Jake Effect works universally on everyone, how AMAZING :))

Thanks for that, Olympia! Hair and hotness are essential, I find :D

It's such a great moment, Lena! Jake did such a comedy with Nailed - let's hope we get to see it!

Thanks Rubes *)

Jake has said he thought the type of movies he would be doing would be comedies.
And rem. on Ellen's birthday 3 or so years ago Jake was one of the phone calls then the call would be over for a bit and then he'd call back again - always asking her to go out with him and she of course saying she didn't think that would be possible..or something like that. Think there were 3 calls - very cute.

And for someone who was always into music that musical has to be on tap one of these days.
