Jake Gyllenhaal - a hairy debate - and Peter Sarsgaard at Comic-Con

As debate intensifies across Gyllendom, with opinion divided, communities split and voices raised and squeaky, I thought it was high time to adress the issue, presenting all the evidence, so at last we can settle the matter of Jake Gyllenhaal and the Face Fuzz. In tonight's post, I present, with the utmost scientific accuracy and objectivity, a presentation of Jake Gyllenhaal's facial hair in recent years - if I had a psychic octopus handy I would of course make use of him to identify the most appropriate level of beard for Jake by means of a series of intensive but animal-friendly tests. As I don't, we'll have to do.

Hot on the heels of HatGate 2009, Jake Gyllenhaal's arrival back in LA last week shows there is no end in sight to BeardGate 2010. This may mean one of four things: 1. Jake Gyllenhaal has lost his razor. 2. Naomi no longer exerts shaving influences. 3. There is a drastic razor shortage in the United States, although Brad Pitt now suggests that the contrary is true. 4. Jake took to heart the comment he received during the PoP publicity - that he should play a biblical character. On with the presentation - please imagine a series of overhead projections and a pointy laser stick thing.

1. Very hairy.

Believe it or not, July 2010 beard levels are not at their most extreme for Jake. In January 2010, Jake Gyllenhaal attended a party with Marion Cotillard. Jake did indeed shave soon afterwards - it is, therefore, more than likely that Marion said something encouraging.

Before this, Jake was at his hariest during the promotion for Rendition, in the Autumn of 2007. Blame was placed on Brothers and Tommy although the evidence indicates that Tommy Cahill was a lot less beardy than Jake.

This beard is the Itchy Beard.

It even inspired the President of Iran.

Peter Sarsgaard can provide beard-growing companionship for Jake.

2. No beard.

The no beard phase is a much rarer beast and is usually work related. For instance, one was able to tell almost immediately that filming on Love and Other Drugs had finished. Jake is often non-bearded when in the company of family. It also makes him more aerodynamic.

Nothing like a film to make the foam come out...

3. Moustache

While Jack Twist's dodgy 70s 'tache can be excused as a movie prop (perhaps with a life of its own)...

... the same cannot be said of this. This is from 2 May 2007.

But, the very next day - 3 May 2007. An audible sigh of relief swept through the fandom.

4. Just a touch

Arguably, not too much, not too little is the best course of shaving action, as is ably demonstrated by these fine photographs.

I would now redirect your eyes to the first two pictures of the post again.

And so, which is it to be?

Comic Con 2010

Peter Sarsgaard made an appearance on the Green Lantern panel in Comic Con at San Diego yesterday. Am I the only one who wants to give Peter a good meal? Source. Great to see Peter getting some attention, though.

And finally...

These two videos have just been reposted - the first was posted here during the PoP party but may have been overlooked (and it's very funny) and the second is posted just cos it gave me a good laugh!

Includes pictures from IHJ and links.

no facial hair please! lol
I think he looks so much better in that way...
anyway he's always gorgeous :) but I hope he gets a razor as soon as possible! :P
also I think Peter looks good, but a little bit skinnier,
good to see him again :)
oh and I love bubble boy :D
have a great night and a very good week :)

Have to say I'm mostly on the clean-shaven side but I did like his look in Brothers and in the first pic on tonight's post. It's when it goes that little bit further I wish he would reach out for the razor:) That face is way too gorgeous to be covered up.

It's great to see Peter at Comic Con but he definitely looks like he needs to get a good meal or two inside him. Just wondering if anyone has seen a clip of him in Knight and Day yet. I was even hoping for one on Top Gear tonight.

Hi Linda! I like a little but not too much, although I think he looks simply stunning in that pic from 3 May 2007 in the post. Have a good week!

Hey there Carol! Sounds like you and I think alike. I like a little but then I loved the look in Brothers because it suited the character and I liked the Dastan scruff too. But a gorgeous face - such a gorgeous face.

I've gotta say I was shocked at how skinny Peter looks here. He needs some Jake cooking right now. I wished we'd seen more of him with Knight and Day. I loved seeing Tom and Cameron on Top Gear tonight! Love to see Jake doing that too.

I have Monday off :D

Hey WDW :) Great post! My favourite is definately just a touch of stubble ;)

Peter looks quite skinny! I wonder if it's for a role.

BTW weren't the pictures taken with Marion in 2010 not 2009? :)

Hi Silver! Ooh thanks for that - I knew it was 2010 but that's not what the laptop wanted to write - corrected now :D

I believe Peter is still working on Green Lantern. He's certainly looking fit and lean. Glad you liked the post!

I was thinking that the pictures with Marion were 2010 too Silver.

We are definitely on the same wavelength as regards Beardgate WDW:) It really did suit his character in Brothers and Tommy Cahill is probably my favourite of all the characters Jake has played to date.

Have a lovely day off WDW. We have a bank hol here next weekend so looking forward to that:)

What a great, great post. I almost stopped reading when I saw the second pic, I couldn`t tear myself away. And then I got to the young Jack Twist one, and then the one just before Lego Dastan. *sigh* What a beautiful man... You must of had a really good time researching this post. :)

I prefer my Jake with light stubble, I don't mind if that makes him less aerodynamic. :DD But I`d take him with the humongous Rendition promo beard before the ridiculous mustache. OMG, what was he thinking? Had he lost a bet or something? On the other hand, I really don't mind Jack's pornstache anymore; I guess I got used to it after seing BBM so many times. :)

I don't think I can ever get used to that pornstache Olympia. I still cringe when I see it:)

I had to go back and have another look at the 3 May 2007 pic.....all I can say to that one is OMG what a divine man :)

I've fixed the date now, Carol :) Tommy Cahill was HOT!! And I loved Jake's bulk in that - I always like it when he's bigger.

Thanks! It's nice to have some long weekends as I get pressured to use my holiday :D We don't have enough Bank Hols in England in the summer. There's only really the one, at the end of August.

Thanks, Olympia! Yes, it was a struggle finding the pictures for the post - it was wonderful and I think it took 3 lovely hours!

Beautiful! But yes, Jake with a full beard is better than no Jake at all. But eek the tache!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Carol! That's an amazing pic - I had fun going back to those two posts! Take a look!

Tommy Cahill was so hot he was nearly on fire WDW:) I prefer Jake a bit more bulked up too. There was just something so sexy about that character.

For me, it's NO facial hair. Period. However, Bubble Boy's undies were cute, but not nearly as...interesting as Pilot's when the God of Fuck went to get him at that slut's trailer! FYI, did anyone else notice the gray rabbit puppet on Jake's left hand as he got out of bed? An homage to Donnie or a strange coincidence?!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Very sexy, Carol!

Hi Gyllenhaalisgr8! oh yes, that was sexy :D I did a post some time ago on Jake and rabbits, including the Highway puppet. And Bubble Guinea Pig of course! I must dig out the link!

gyllenhaalisgr8 said...

I only noticed the puppet because I was going frame by frame to take a picture of Jake's underwear, LOL!

Hey, everybody! =)

To me it's definitely number 4 style... ^.^

HOT! *.*

In a hurry... Bye!!!

Face Fuzz, BeardGate 2010... Dear heavens, you've made me laugh so hard with this post that my neighbours won't be glad I'm back home. *lol*

My vote goes to stubbly, definitely. It may be due to the gigantic amount of PoP interviews I've seen that I still don't feel entirely comfortable with a clean shaven Jake jaw. Though clean shaven is still way better than a moustache... ;-)

That pic of Peter is scary! He looks ten years older! :-O

Alejandra said...

Hi there!

I would have thought I preferred "clean shaven" but the light stubble is oh so sexy, I don't think I have the strength to oppose. ;-)

I'm gonna have to go through all the pics in the post again, though. Let each one of them speak to me freely so I can come to a wise decision -eventually. You may think that's nothing but an excuse to stare at his pics forever. Let me tell you, if that is what you think... you're probably right. :-D

If you need me, you know where I'll be. Have a great night!

Thanks WDW, for enlightening us on the beard. I think that he gets tired of shaving, he is one of those guys who gets the 5 o'clock shadows.

I like the clean shaven or scruffy look but not full beard.

Jake's a man who looks good with facial hair, and his 5 o'clock shadow is beautiful. I like him with the Brothers bod too. :)

Was there another photo after the one of Jack Twist and the lamb?
I seem to be boxed in by an invisible Gyllenforce-field and am unable to move on...save yourselves, just leave me here...

Great post, WDW! As always!

Great pics WDW!

I like the young Jack Twist look - clean shaven, followed by the Prince of Persia stubble.

But any Jake is good Jake!

Cheers

Hello everyone! It's raining on my day off :( Can mean only one thing - Toy Story 3!

Hi there Copycat! Yep, No 4 certainly has somethings going for it :D

Morning Lady Ekster! Glad I gave you a laugh - it was a fun post to do! I know what you mean about the Picture pics, I was a bit alarmed. I'll have to check out more of the video from the event so that I can stop worrying about him being too skinny!

Alejandra, that sounds like the right thing to do! It took me so long going through the pictrues and just staring at that beautiful fce - a very nice activity for a lazy Sunday evening :)

Hi Sweetpea - he definitely is an expert at the shadow - although you'd have thought that's more work than the cleanshaven!

I do agree, 01:29 :)

Thanks 02:24! That's one of my favourite pictures of Jake - I have it framed.

Thanks Tui! I love the Dastan fuzz, I really do (I can't wait for that DVD!!!). But definitly any Jake is a good Jake :)

Have a good day everyone, even if it's Monday... and raining...

Enjoy Toy Story 3 WDW:) A friend saw it yesterday and really loved it. Must try and catch it this week myself.

I don't know what I'm gonna do. Did not turn my computer on during the weekend and I missed the biggest news! He's back.

Big SQUEE!!!

I prefer the non so biblical beard. But it's ok, I can live with it for a while.

I agree with Tui and Carol.

Mustache, he could save us that one.

My God, if he reads any of these comments... ;-D

Anyway, he has to give a little of every look to all of us. We are easy to please, aren't we?. He,he.

TD said...

Nothing too much is a good philosophy.
That said, as Jake is one of the few men able to comment with genuine experience on the exfoliating nature of beardy-kissing, a little more consideration could be demonstrated... ;D

Hi everyone! Back from seeing Toy Story 3 :D

Hi Carol - I did love it :D I hope you get to see it.

Hey there Eureka! He's most definitely back. I think if he saww these comments he'd be confused about what length we want, but he does try and do right by all of us!

Very true, TD :D The kissability is definitely a factor to be reckoned in :D

Thanks Monica!

Hehehe, another fun post WDW.

Speaking of beard kissing, on Saturday I was kissed by someone sporting a beard as full as Jake's was. I was surprised at how soft it felt, not yukky at all. Now just imagine full bearded Jakey planting a big one on you, his full manly beard as soft as his lips. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Oh where was I? Oh yes, I like him manly as well as boyish. I'll take him any which way I can. Beauty, brains, beard and brawn what a combination.

Peter looks so different he's lost so much weight. I hope he's healthy and happy.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Sheba! Sounds like a pleasant experiment! Mr WDW is very beardy so I need to kiss Jake when he has no beard to see what that's like! Sigh... dreams... back to reality.... Glad you liked the post!
