Jake Gyllenhaal continues to enjoy his holidays on that island with the Pap-Exclusion Zone. Time for a diversion. IHJ has today posted scans from Italy's magazine Nick and, as well as the great pictures, here are GyllenGems. For instance, when Jake is asked if he was destined to make films, 'I believe that everything is already written at our birth... In my case, the signals were very clear from the beginning.' Jake continues that with Paul Newman as his godfather, Jamie Lee Curtis as his godmother - how could he have been anything other than an actor? Apologies, as always, for the translation.
'Not that I want to be like the princesses of Disney films, but if someone gave me a fairy godmother, there must have been a reason from the beginning! Then Maggie comes along with this talent, and everyone cries. Without that miracle, Maggie and I may have missed the real opportunities but, little by little, we've tried to hit the target.'
On whether Jake's career has been a mix of luck and resourcefulness? 'I don't have the age or experience to work it out... I debuted in a successful movie (City Slickers), and I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn't seized that opportunity to fly, if I hadn't allowed it to grow. So much so that later when I was offered the title role in Donnie Darko and I found myself next to the same actress who only a short time before I had adored in the role of Stands With A Fist in Dances with Wolves (Mary McDonnell), I didn't think: "You did it." I thought: "Try."'
Jake has learnt 'To never abandon curiosity. Indeed, I try to be surprised every time. When we arrived in Morocco for the filming of Prince of Persia, I thought that the six months of training was only a first test, but harder tests than them would be waiting for me.'
How hard was the training? 'Physically, especially. The gym every day. The training was rather long and stressful, learning to run better and above all to jump. Everything was about the sword, which I knew absolutely nothing about. But anyway, apart from the physical training, when we arrived in Morocco, I knew I had to find an answer to this idea of the "luck of being chosen", and then we started the training for real.' Gemma Arterton was a big help in this process.
Jake describes how noone knows how to hold together a large crew like Mike Newell, who also never forgets the importance of what actors can give to their roles. Jerry Bruckheimer added professionalism, skill and precision. 'Whoever produced successful films such as Flashdance, Beverly Hills Cop, and especially the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, knows not only the film but also the audience... One thing surprised me when I was viewing the rushes. Especially in action scenes, [Jerry] imitated a hypothetical member of the audience watching the screen for a few seconds, who turns to his girlfriend, then again to the carton of popcorn at his feet. He said they must absolutely avoid making an action foreseeable and, so ensure that the film managed to capture the attention of that hypothetical viewer more than his girlfriend and popcorn did. But this is just one side of his professionalism.' There is also luck.
Why does Jake keep referring to luck? 'Because it is true. For example, who would have said that Brokeback Mountain would have been so successful? And that the film, after what happened to Heath, would became a kind of milestone, a testament?' Jake is asked if he thinks about the fate of Heath and this is clearly a subject Jake doesn't want to broach. 'Never, but I think of him with great affection. I don't really want to talk about personal things'
The interview ends with a little about Love and Other Drugs: 'The film is about a Viagra salesman who happened to meet this wonderful woman who is ill with Parkinson's, that Anne Hathaway plays with absolute tenderness. The director is Edward Zwick, whom I have admired since the days of Glory'. While Zwick works in Hollywood, he doesn't appear 'Hollywoody' to Jake. Jake is asked what the term 'Hollywood' means to him: 'Predictable. And sugar.'
Many thanks to IHJ for the pictures and scans.
Note: Paul and Jamie are magical Hollywood godparents and not 'real' swearing over the font godparents.

"Predictable. And sugar."
What a turn of phrase he has! And I loved the words about Heath. Wonderful! Thank you so much for this translation.

My blogger word has gone again (means I have to refresh the page three to four times before the comment shows up), but I'm not posting from teh iPod.
I love what Jake said about Hollywood and I love how he briefly touched on Heath but refused to say more.
I can't wait to see LAOD

Hi TD! So sorry that you're having more troubles with the word. That is so strange. I don't like to think of you having troubles so I'll remove the word verification. I'll just bring it back if I have spamming trouble like before.
I'm so glad you liked it. It was a bit of a job but I think it turned out ok. And I loved some of the things he said. He sounded very thoughtful.
Hi Sweetpea :) I like that too, about not wanting to talk about Heath but just saying enough. The Hollywood comments were interesting.
I've done a quick post on MB about the new fab trailer released today for David Fincher's The Social Network.
Hey WDW, re: blogger, that's really kind of you, but I wasn't complaining! I'm as amused as anyone by the blogger words and its not a problem, just weird! Please don't worry about it, I don't want to spoil anyone else's fun either!
He does sound quite philosophical these days about fate etc. I'm not sure I agree with him about there being a 'Destiny', but I can see why he would think that and he seems to be thinking of it in a good way, if you know what I mean?
I do hope ASDA or Tesco etc advertise the Donnie blu ray. I'd love to see a few clips popping up in the Tour de France adverts :) Would be a nice surprise. Wasn't it dramatic today eh? I'm sorry Renshaw is out.

No worries, TD! I can always add it back again. I can't post from my Blackberry because of it so that does make it awkward for me to post during the day. We'll see how it goes :)
I watched the TdF today like everyday - so exciting! But I can see why he was sent home. I think being put into last place would have been better. Looks like a great stage tomorrow. OMG the adverts are terrible during it! DDarko would be such a blessing!
Serious gales and rain out there tonight. Powerful and a little scary. Wouldn't be surprised if some trees come down.
Yeah, I can see why he is out, but I wish they'd just relegated him, too. Loyalty is a rare thing to see these days.
Jake seems to have loyalty tho. A nice trait.

Love the Td...F! Yep, he does. And it is :)
Paul Newman wasn't his godfather and Jamie Isn't exactly either. Didn't he say something like she was his Hollywood god-mother or movie god-mother..something like that.
He said that, Anon, but they obviously both inspired (& inspire) him enormously and he sees them in these terms :)
Yes, they were an inspiration to Jake, but the article doesn't say he considers them in that way even tho they weren't "officially" so people will think they really were.
Being too picky about "accurate articles" but some borrow from others and sometimes they don't do their homework.
We see that in interviews a lot of the time with a lot of actors, etc.
That's why when there is someone giving an interview the person being interviewed can tell pretty quickly if the person has any interest at all in his subject.
Speaking of luck, today I was standing in the supermarket checkout line, and casually glanced at a magazine on the rack next to the aisle. I said to myself, "The woman on that cover looks a lot like Maggie Gyllenhaal." Turns out it *was* Maggie. It was the August 2010 issue of "Good Housekeeping," and the cover article was about the friendship between Maggie and Emma Thompson, who were in "Stranger Than Fiction," and are now in "Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang."
I nought the magazine, and spent the afternoon enjoying the article and the pictures. Maggie and Emma talk about juggling careers and husbands and children.
Morning all! Friday :D
Hi Anon - It's Jake here, not the interviewer, who uses Paul Newman, Jamie Lee Curtis and godfather and godmother in the same sentence. I know that they're not his real godparents, he knows it too, but sometimes he just brings them up. He's mentioned Paul several times lately - Jake clearly misses him. It's fine to nitpick interviewers - I want accurate reporting too - but sometimes it's Jake who plays with us. I quite like it.
Hey Paul! I really hope I can find that in the shops - it's still a different version here. It sounds like a great interview, I love the pics. I included it in this post.
Have a great Friday everyone!
Thanks for bringing this interview WDW!
I was feeling kind of low today and your post cheers me up.
I liked:
"Not that I want to be like the princesses of Disney films" ;-)
Cause he has charm and a natural gift like the Disney princesses. How funny he says so...
About Hollywood, for us as audience the product is magical. But as business, for its workers must be like any other organized business. I understand the "predictable" but what does he mean by "sugar"?
Hi Eureka! I'm so glad this post cheered you up a bit. I like that bit about the princesses too - I laughed out loud when I saw that!
I think with 'sugar' he means that it's saccharin and gives a too sugary/rosy view of life.
I hope you feel much better :)
Hi! You've done a very good translation :D As soon as i see the name of Jake on that magazine i've bought it immediately because here in italy there are not so many magazines about him :/
And i was very happy about this interview, especially when he speaks about luck and about to make the right decisions, and i liked the heath's part, and how he wants to keep his emotions for himself. Love this attitude. Plus i've never seen that photoshoot before, i was in adoration, they're amazing shoots :D
Hi Francesca! Thanks so much for commenting - and that makes my day - thank you - it isn't easy translating these articles so it's great to hear you liked it. And it's a special interview and a lovely spread - love the pictures. It's always good when Jake does a magazine in your own country - it was a real thrill here when he did two big newspaper interviews. Thanks again :)
