Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway: comfortable and brave together. WDW Interlude: the stoney way home

Finally, I got to see the trailer for Love and Other Drugs! My first proper glimpse of Jake Gyllenhaal as Jamie, the charmer with a heart, made up for the last part of my journey home being made on the back of a towtruck due to my exhaust pipe rather inconsiderately deciding to fall off. I'm sure you've all seen the trailer far more than me now but I think it's worth posting. I can't get enough of it.

I was trying to put my finger on what it was that draws me so strongly to Jake and this film. I think it may be because there are elements here from many of Jake's films over the years. Watching the trailer, I was reminded of Rendition's Doug, Zodiac's Robert, Proof's Hal and Brokeback's Jack. This may be partly because of the setting in the 1990s - this seems to fit well with some of Jake's characters, so few of which can be placed in the present day. I see it in the hair, the sunglasses, the expression, the clothing and the body language. And it is partnered with Anne Hathaway, an actress with whom Jake clearly has ample chemistry and confidence.

But also this glimpse demonstrates how Jake is bringing together everything he's learned over the years and is throwing it into a brave, open performance - and the same can be said of Annie.

With thanks to BBMISwear for the scan, here is the page from Entertainment Weekly's preview for November films. In it director Edward Zwick says: 'Jake and I met years ago... I had a chance to see this funny, antic side of him audiences haven't seen yet... That chemistry [with Anne] definitely helped... because they had to be very comfortable together and brave with each other. There's some real, um, intimacy un the film.'

WDW Interlude

Although the release of the LAOD trailer has postponed the final Cornish Interlude (I'll post it tomorrow in case anyone's interested), here is a look at a pile of stones that I came across on my long, troubled way home today. This was about 5 miles before the gods turned their eye and I broke down. Stonehenge may have had more tourists this evening than I have ever seen there before but still this magnificent ancient human landscape retained something of itself.

Pictures from IHJ and WDW. Includes WDW scan (thanks BBMISwear!)

I have not seen all the elements that you saw, because for me I felt something different in this character of Jake of everything he has done. Maybe the hair of Rendition.

But this is by far one of the movies of him I'm most anxious to see since it was announced.

I do not know how many times I've seen this trailer and it is not enough. Anne Hathaway and Jake are so cute together. They have an amazing chemistry.

I'm happy that the trailer did not give the whole movie.

Hi Monica! I put it very clumsily, as I'm knackered, but I meant that too - there is something very different too but I also think that it draws on all these past roles. And that's just an impression from 2 minutes!

I've been waiting for this one too. This sort of film is my favourite type of movie and I'm so happy that Jake and Anne have done one of these together.

I totally agree about the trailer. I know some people have complained about the lack of mention about Parkinson's but a movie should have its twists and turns. We'll know what it's about but really it's great if you can have a trailer that doesn't give too much away.

Welcome home WDW - What a fantastic tour and what a way to end it! You poor thing. Oh well, it'll make repeated watchings of the trailer with a glass of red all the more worthwhile.
'Comfortable and confident together' - yes it shines through every frame. Its going to be a brilliant film.

PS That pile of stones beats any of Goldsworthy's, no matter how he would try poor guy! Did you say you went to college with him? Must say, always loved his stuff and other land art. Did you have time to see any stuff at St Ives?

Thanks TD :) I have been feeling rather sorry for myself - but the Shiraz is helping! Jake and Annie help no end :D

Stonehenge is such a strange place - I saw a cuple of people meditating there surrounded by so many tourists and daytrippers. I think I'll stick to winter visits to the stones. And the whole scenery around there is gobsmacking.

I studied art with Goldsworthy in Wales for a couple of summers. I was very young and didn't like being told that I had to write with a stick dipped in mud. But some of the things he created were so reach-out-and-touchable. It's difficult to describe. He took us to a slate quarry to build a sculpture and he wasn't at all worried that we could get blown up. The type of art that I've done always relies heavily on earthy and solid media. But it can be so delicate too. Goldsworthy made sculptures out of leaves and berries.

I'm going off on a tangent but it's interesting to talk about all of this!

PS I didn't get the chance to see too much of St Ives except for a drive through as it was horrendously busy and even the Park and Ride was full. I went elsewhere instead so I'll do a post tomorrow and I think you, as a fellow archaeologist, will be interested!

I'm so good at going off topic it's terrible...

So glad to read you're safely home! :-) Uff what a trip it must have been... I hope Jake and Anne have made up for it a bit. ;-)

I laughed out loud at that Ed Zwick 'real um... intimacy' quote. I seriously don't know how I'm going to cope with the waiting for this movie, but at least LAOD has a Dutch release date! Even better, Source Code seems to have one too!! I read on Pathé's website today that LAOD is scheduled for a January 6 release, and Source Code for February 12 (http://www.pathe.nl/zoek/jake+gyllenhaal). I hardly dare believe it, but my heart is beating with a lot of hope...

Thanks Lady Ekster! Jake and Annie have helped a great deal. I can't count how many times I've played that trailer now. It's so... raunchy :D

That's great you have a release date now for LAOD and for SC too! I know news is on the way from SC so I'm keeping an eye on that to post but that's great news and I'm hoping that SC will get a European release at the same time as the US. That'd be good... Keep that heart beating with hope!!!

I absolutely love love LOVE these two as an onscreen couple! their chemistry is very believable in their movies and I wouldn't be surprised if their fake relationship on film ends up real. Anne is the type of girl I would like for Jake (as the role of his real girlfriend). I mean, you know, after me of course :D rofl

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Yeah, and after me too, Georgie! But yes Jake and Annie have a wonderful chemistry. There were rumours they'd act together in Damn Yankees too.

ooooh I'm looking forward to tomorrow's post! Intrigued...
Interesting to hear your memories of AG, he definitely does sound a bit mad! I would have loved to be able to do any sort of art, but particularly sculpture - either delicate or earthy. A Jake Naked sculpture would be a goal ;P

I think Jake and Anne have wonderful chemistry and I do hope they act again together. Looking forward to their next film even before seeing this one! I think they must be very good friends but I don't think they'll get together. She knows him too well, I think :D

This about says it all: "I can't get enough of it" - yea, I know the feeling!

So good to have you home!

Oh...and Pilot...I see Pilot too (especially in the "have you been abducted by aliens" part)!

I think I'll go watch it again. :-)

Hello WDW

Glad you made it safely home, sorry about your vehicle troubles! Reminds me of a campervan holiday I had where part of the view was up high in the campervan on the back of a breakdown vehicle trailer.

Enjoyed your Stonehenge pics. It's a surreal place.

The LAOD trailer is so watchable.

Cheers

Tui

yup, agreeing on the chemistry between Jake and Anne - unbelievable. And for the scenes as far as seen in the trailer there needed to be a good feeling with eachother for the both of them.

I can't wait to see it ...

And I really like your pictures of stonehenge (and your interlude) - I've never been there but I sure will go one day... it must be amazing seeing it with my own eyes - as I already get the sense of something special when I look at pictures (I can't really explain it - but I have a spiritual side in me if that's the better discription what I feel about those places)

Morning everyone! I'm taking it extraordinarily easy today - even my fingers ache!

Morning TD :D I think the goal of a Jake Naked statue is a fine artistic aspiration - good luck with it :D

Hi there BBMISwear :-) I can certainly see why you like the opening lines! I love that line about the aliens. I think this film will have us crying and laughing at the same time - love films like that.

Thanks Tui! Oh that sounds horrid. I did see a lot of people broken down yesterday. The long queues of traffic for mile upon mile left a trail of overheated cars and caravans. I'm glad you liked the pics!

Hey there Sasha! Zwicck was on to a winner from the start having Jake and Anne together. I'm so glad someone thought to do that again after BBM.

I hope you get to go to Stonehenge. I'd recommend going there in the winter when it's less crowded - it was absolutely heaving yesterday, busiest I've ever seen it. The light there is amazing - it's not just the henge, the whole landscape is ancient, with other henges and barrows and stones. It's hard not to fall for the place.

Have a great Sunday everyone!

Sigh, Beautiful Stonehenge. You got some great pictures on your trip, WDW.

I love this trailer. It's fun seeing Jake this way, as a charmer, and he and Anne look beautiful together. I like Josh too. Great as the brother. :)

This movie looks fabulous. The chemistry needed for this type of film looks to be there in the bucketload and it also looks like Jake has chem with his on-screen bro. Great to see him with george Segal and Oliver Platt too

Morning everyone! I'm feeling much more human today (although back at work...) after a rather bad day yesterday when even my hair ached :D

Thanks so much Bertie! And there are some more pics, I must post those. I wasn't up to doing anything yesterday that involved the use of more than one braincell. I like Josh too - such a funny guy.

Hi there 22:48! It's such a good cast - full of really interesting and likeable actors - love Oliver Platt and Hank. It'll be so great to see Jake's work with these peopl! I bet it was a happy set :)

Have a good day everyone! My car's heading off to the doctor's... I must get it some grapes.

Hey WDW :) hope you had a good holiday! I'm back from a week in wales today. I haven't had a chance to thoroughly read through all the posts yet but I just want to express an opinion on the trailer. Personally, of course i can't wait for this movie! but i think its bad marketing already. I think the fact Anne has parkinsons would have been a key element to help grab peoples attention if it was shown in the trailer. Although WE know that it doesn't give away the full story people will watch it and believe they have seen the full story. A general romantic comedy. And perhaps be put off. I just hope the next trailer, if there is one, will give it that little bit more of an edge :( Sorry, i know i differ from the general opinion but thats just my thoughts. I really do hope i'm proved wrong and it will be a big success :)
