Hard as it is to believe, it's coming up to five years since the release of Brokeback Mountain - a film that stopped moviegoers, including many journalists, dead in their tracks. But you didn't need to be a filmwriter to discover that you would took away far more from those two hours in a theatre than you ever could have expected. It's great, then, to read today the reminiscences of writer Nicholas Snow as he recalls the night of the Hollywood premiere on 11 November 2005 and how everyone was in agreement - writer, screenwriter, director, composer, actor - that Brokeback Mountain worked. A night that completely transformed Snow's opinion of Jake Gyllenhaal. This post includes photographs from the Hollywood premiere.
I want to quote from the introduction: 'I don’t believe any of us covering the red carpet arrivals for the "Brokeback Mountain" premiere in Hollywood on Nov. 11, 2005, had a clue that we would truly be a part of history, helping launch a movie that would transform the lives of countless people around the world because of its profound capturing of the cost of the closet. I had not yet seen the movie that I now hold as one of the most important ever made, conveying the deep, undeniable humanity of authentic love, as well as the justifications and costs of locking that love in the dark.'
Do read the comments of Ang Lee, Annie Proulx, Diana Ossana and Gustavo Santaolalla about the impact of this story and film on their careers and lives - as well as on the lives of others. Heath Ledger wasn't at the premiere as Michelle Williams was heavily pregnant, but Jake Gyllenhaal was there to represent the cast - and now, almost five years on, one realises that Jake was such a young man during the making of, and the publicity for, Brokeback Mountain. It's easy to forget that. And as time moves on, and we gain a little perspective of this film and its creation, my admiration for the young cast soars.
Here is the section on Jake which includes, I'm glad to say, a fine example of GyllenSpeak. Michael Snow continues: 'In a red carpet interview there are often several reporters speaking with a single star at one time. My interview with Jake Gyllenhaal was en masse, and one reporter asked the star what message he wanted audiences to take away from "Brokeback Mountain." “If that were my job, then I would be the director of the movie,” said Gyllenhaal. “I just showed up to work every day. What do I want people to take away from it? I hope that they walk in with an idea, and they leave with a different one.”'
'They will and I did. I walked in believing Gyllenhaal was a pretty boy creation of the Hollywood star machine. I walked out embracing him as a great actor and a brave soul, although he initially turned the movie down—not because of homophobia, but because of the two-dimensional sound of a movie that is said to be about “two gay cowboys.”'
'“… They said, ‘uh, we have this gay cowboy script.’ And I said, ‘absolutely not. I don’t want to have anything to do with it.’ And when I learned Ang Lee was going to direct it…and the kind of passion he approaches all of his projects with, I immediately wanted to do it. And I knew that it would be about so much more than the simplification that people can kind of throw out there and laugh at…”'
'“You know, that’s only a suit that I think both Heath and I have been told we’ve donned later,” Gyllenhaal said when I asked him how he felt about the fact that his character in "Brokeback Mountain" would be a significant role model for gay youth. “It’s flattering you know. I think that it’s important that whatever somebody is, however they are, that they be accepted.”'
'One reporter said to Jake, “In a recent interview you said it was a compliment to be called bisexual, so you’re fine with playing gay and playing bi and all that?” “What I think I meant to say with that,” explained Jake, “I think that this movie in particular is about kind of trying to shatter the sense of duality or this idea of, you know, an idea of good and bad or black and white. It works within a gray area and I think that you know, sexually, I think people consider bisexuality that kind of gray area and so, I just would like — yea, whatever. It’s a very interesting place. I’m flattered to be called anything, even if it’s somebody coming up to the street and being like, ‘f**k you,’ you know, because if it bothers people or if people like it, that’s what I’m in the business of doing.” Okay, now would someone please translate Jake’s answer for me?'
An enigma and a delight - that's Jake Gyllenhaal for you. And a great actor and a brave soul.
Your starter for ten
Talking of Jake Gyllenhaal as an enigma, a good source tells me (ie, my mother) that there was a questions about Jake on Mastermind this week, a sure sign that even the British Establishment - even the BBC - recognises that Jake has now 'arrived'. The question, admittedly, was a tricky one: 'Who played the lead in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time?' I'm relieved to report that the contestant did get the question right (fortunately, they didn't have to spell it).
And while we're on about questions - what on earth has Jake got on his head here? I don't think even he would have specs this big! Thanks to IHJ for the new old Sundance 2002 picture.
WDW Interlude
Drop what you're doing! Dig out your bucket and spade, pack those walking boots and sealegs and get ready for some clotted cream, pasties, fish pie and spingo (I'm unreliably informed that's a real ale)! Yes - WDW is off on its holidays. Martha's Vineyard is so last year, so for 2010 we're heading (a bit less) west - to the land of cream teas, cliffs, big skies and bigger seas, rocks and surfers, dolphins, seals and basking sharks, spooky Celtic fougous, castles and forts, unauthenticated accounts of big cats prowling across the moors, fish and chips, and fog. Yep, Cornwall it is. There's more than a 100% chance that some WDW Interludes will follow during the week as I set off on my roadtrip, just me, Percy the Peugeot and a bunch of guillemots - and, I hope, you.
Speaking of holidays it sounds like Jake is back in LA!
My review of Knight and Day is now up on MovieBrit.
Includes pictures from IHJ.

Nevermind the goggles -- those were the days when he had super waxed, Carrot Top eyebrows! Thank God they grow back! Luv ya, Jake!
oh my god, I was listening to the BBM soundtrack when I saw this post
how lovely :)
you know, lots of memories and feelings..
favorite movie so far..
hey Kate I hope you have so much fun ! :)
Hi everyone! It is nice to have a bit of a Brokie post - it's been a while :D
Yep, much prefer them now, Gyllenhaalisgr8 :)
Hey Linda! That's great that you were listening to the soundtrack at the same time. I'm taking BBM on holiday with me. I'm staying in a very quiet place, on top of a cliff, and BBM will be a perfect evening. Lots of memories. Thanks - I hope so too :D
Not that I am authority on Jake or Gyllenspeak but I think alot of Jake's comments about acting is about making people think or react. Its ok whatever anyone calls him because then he has done his job as an actor, he got a reaction. Something in his performances moved people to feel something (flattering or not).
I totally agree, Jake Fan :) I think that's exactly what Jake and most good actors would like - to prompt a reaction, to stir up one's preconceptions. And that is one thing that Jake's films are very good at, BBM especially.
Sounds like Jake is back in LA!
What a lovely post! Thanks WDW, and what a coincedence as well: tonight Brokeback is on Dutch telly.
It's like 1 + 1 = 2. NL3 is covering the Amsterdam Gay Pride Parade today, and guess which movie they have scheduled right after the broadcast ends in 20 minutes from now... exactly. :) Since I'm not really into bright pink male underwear I've skipped the parade broadcast, but I'm getting ready with a cup of tea, tissues and no mascara for Brokeback.
Enjoy your holidays! (and please, do better than the Top Gear boys did on their motorhome adventure in Cornwall recently *big grin*)
That's a real coincidence, Lady Ekster! I love to think of you watching it today :D I'm so glad you liked the post.
OMG, yes, I hope it goes better than that - that was so funny (love Top Gear!)
My review of Knight and Day is now up at MovieBrit :D
I think I'll watch Brokeback Mountain again. Thanks, Wet Dark!
Great to know about the importance of BBM after so many years. What a movie! A great film to remember!
I understood the same as Jake Fan.
Knight and Day is no longer in theaters in my city.
Monday I'll watch Inception.
Yep, Jake, Peter and Mags and an unidentified woman were stalked by paps at a Santa Monica resturant last nite. The whole family is back in LA.
That's great Monica!
Knight and Day seems to be out very late here. Enjoy Inception!
Hi 22:48 :) Yes, Maggie was with Emma Thompson when she got her Hollywood Walk of Fame Star on Friday.
X17 has a pap video - I know many of you don't like these, if you want to see it it's here. I like to think that the enjoyment of the evening out far outweighs the moments with the paps on the way back to the car.
Jake is looking very beardy :)
Hi WDW,
I've just now logged on since my last comment a couple of posts back - and I didn't realise you'd done a post on my little crop circle video! I'm hugely flattered ... but I should probably explain right away that while I made the Jake-version of this video; the actual video is an adapt of a Swedish TV advert - there's more info on the link - so all credit really to the persons at the tachyfilm website. I'm so thrilled you liked my Jake version tho!
Also the blu ray software is Cyberlink Ultra II.
Lovely BBM post.
Hope Cornwall is as fantastic [lit] as ever. Watch out for Green Smoke. And crop circles.
TD
PS I've just read the comments on the crop circle post and I'm over the moon so many people liked it! Including Herman!
Thank you all
TD
Hi TD! It was great! So funny, OMG so funny.
The Cyberkink software ... so that enables an external Blu-ray drive to play on a laptop/PC if you're laptop's not up to it?
Thanks - I'm looking forward to it - it could be quite an adventure!
Cyberkink ;= I like it! Very appropriate as yes, its the blu ray software for a PC tho you need the BD hardware too. I guess an external BD would work. Its a replacement for Intervideo WinDVD, but IMHO they're both awful. Everything to do with Blu ray is such a rip off. (Except the TDAT ads.)
TD
Ahem... Cyberkink... I really need to brush up on my typing skills :D Thanks for that though, that's very useful. An external drive is my only solutionto the blu-ray 'problem' so I'm looking at software. The PoP disc had better be worth it!
I don't think people will ever stop talking about BBM, and that is a good thing. I don't think Heath or Jake realized the impact the movie was going to have OR how to react to it. I've heard Jake try to describe his experience and was kind of tongue tied.
In the statement you were confused with, I think that Jake thought any reaction to his movies (maybe BBM in particular) is a good one. Even if someone says FU. It's a reaction, I guess better than silence.
BBM changed things for so many people and I think gay and straight alike realized this movie was something very different and I think it was an impetus for some states to legalize gay marriage here in the states.
It looks like Jake is wearing some kind of goggles on his head.
I am glad you are still mentioning BBM, I hope it is something Jake will always have a special place in his heart for.
So he's gone back to LA, gosh that man is a jet setter, we gotta plant a GPS on him (I think you should do the honors, WDW :D) just get real close and tell him you wanted to smell his cologne.
sweetpea
:))D Goodluck! Also BTW, the newer blu ray releases REQUIRE the newer software/firmware or they won't play anyway! Don't get the older version of a software title, and make sure the BD drivers are uptodate too.
( I wished someone had told me that!)
TD
I watched both that Top Gear epi and BBM today. The contrast couldn't have been bigger. One minute I'm laughing my lungs out, the next I'm sobbing in front of the tv - why does that soundtrack have to be so, so beautiful.
BBM certainly made a lot of people reach for tissues around the country. Reading the Brokeback tags on Hyves (Dutch equivalent of Facebook) a lot of people have been touched by it, either for the first time or again. It's lovely to read their comments, knowing that not so long ago I had the exact same experience.
TD, do I understand it correctly that you made that Jake video? Whoa, what a great job!!
Hi Sweetpea :) I'll most definitely never stop talking about Brokeback here - it's such an important part of who I am. Yes, that's what Jake means - it was the reporter who was confused ;)
Thanks so much for the advice TD! I am bewildered by it all, I must say. I'll have to see what happens - ugh... I may well be calling on you for advice!
Hey Lady Ekster! That sounds like quite an evening.... It is wonderful how now more people are discovering Brokeback and seeing it for the first time. I'm looking forward to seeing it myself again this week - it's been far too long. (And nothing makes me laugh quite like Top Gear!)
Ah, Brokeback! Is it really five years?
Yes, it is quite astounding the stellar performances given by Jake and Heath at such young ages. But even in their early 20's, they both had impressive CVS. I spent a rainy hour yesterday watching one of the programmes of the TV series Heath made at 18, called Roar, where he was running around in Xena Warrior princess type outfits, looking smouldering in close ups. And we know the range and breadth of roles Jake had done by the age of what, 24?
I still think they were both really gutsy to take on these roles. Homophobia is still alive out there and they were fearless.I remember Heath said at the time, 'Brave, it wasn't brave, firefighters are brave.' I wish that either Jake or Heath had won the Oscar, they deserved it. BBM resounds in a way five years later that Capote doesn't. At least Jake got recognised with the BAFTA.
And WDW, I need to thank you for my ongoing education. Every time you post I find myself looking something up - I now know a guillemot is a bird!:)
Have a lovely summer holiday in beautiful Cornwall! And the BBM soundtrack is sublime!
Cheers
Tui
Hey Tui! Roar sounds amazing - I hadn't heard about that. It's good to know, years on, that Jake and Heath are still getting praise for these roles - there is just no comparoson to Crash and Capote. And maybe more realise that now.
That's great that you looked it up! Guillemots are some of my favourite birds - they're also one of my favourite bands!
Which reminds me, I have to do my playlist for the long drive :D
I zipped it to Herman earlier today. He thought I made it (I send him a lot of my Jake vids) but I told him I saw it on WDW. It truly is a keeper! I wonder if our maintenance man would mow me a Jake outside of my apartment window?!
In commeration of BBM's fifth anniversary, I offer this video I found on YouTube -- BBM performed by 30 Minute Bunnies!

Thanks Gyllenhaalisgr8 :)
Morning all! I'm off on an epic drive so I'll catch up with you all later :D Have a great Sunday!
Any idea who the "mystery girl" is?
Thanks for the link to the article from Nicholas Snow, WDW. I love reading great stuff like this about one of my favorite movies of all time. I recently watched it again after about 3 years & was so totally overwhelmed with devastation & emotion that it stayed with me for days. I was, (still am), a huge Heath Ledger fan & this one movie in particular of Heath's is extremely hard on me. I can watch several of his other movies with total abandonment & joy, but BBM just tears me apart since his senseless death. I hope those feelings ease up soon, so I can watch it anytime without it being that difficult since it is such a beautiful & moving story. In my opinion, it is the best movie of BOTH Jake's & Heath's careers.
Hi everyone! Made it to beautiful sunny, hot Cornwall - I'm in a small harbour village but half the people here are dressed as pirates... Pics later :D
Welcome Beijerland! She looks a lot to me like the girl Jake had dinner with in LA before he went to MV. Either that or it was me :)
I hope everyone's having a lovely Sunday!
Hi Vanessa! Posting at the same time :) I totally understand what you're saying. I'm glad to say that now I can watch BBM and get as much pleasure from it as anything else - and that's good, because for a long time it was too difficult. I hope you reach that stage too at some point :)
Off to eat some fish and then I'll see if the net is up to a post :D
Tonight's hotel has very dodgy wifi so if I can't post tonight, I'll see you tomorrow!
Hope you have a good hol WDW:)
Looking forward to reading your Knight and Day review. Just saw it myself this evening.
Good to hear Jake is back in LA.
