Love and Other Drugs continues to tick all the boxes, Maggie Gyllenhaal joins Peter on screen and Jake's the perfect gentleman

Love and Other Drugs continues its test screening journey across the world and this week it reached London. While finding it a little strange to think of this film playing so near (and yet so far), it's great to hear that the movie is still wowing its testers as they tick all the boxes on the clipboard. And again, we hear how the Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway combo is making audiences - male and female - both laugh and cry.

Here's the IMDb report and, yet again, it's by a male viewer, and not your traditional female RomCom fan. 'I saw this last night [Tuesday 17 August] at a test screening here in London. Both me and my friend came out of the cinema absolutely, unanimously loving the film. I didn't really know what to expect going in, but at the end we were asked to fill out a comment card and it ticked pretty much every good box going.'

'Gyllenhaal and Hathaway have a brilliant chemistry on screen and the story seemlessly went from hilarious to heart-touchingly sad. It can take a lot to make me laugh, but there were some truly laugh out loud belly laughs, and it can take a lot to make me cry, but the way the film deals with Hathaway's character's Parkinsons disease was incredibly emotional.'

'I just watched the trailer and it does a decent job of telling you what the plot is about, but the film itself has so much going for it it's hard to condense it down to a 2 minute trailer, so don't judge a film by it's trailer. All in all, it's by far one of the best drama/romantic/comedies I've seen in a long long time. Highly recommended!' He later goes on to describe one scene dealing with Anne's illness as 'quite harrowing'. It sounds like this is, after all, a difficult film to characterise and full of surprises and delights for its audience.

A family affair

At the New York premiere of Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang (such a good film - do go and see it or, in the UK, watch the DVD), Maggie Gyllenhaal revealed that she is joining Peter Sarsgaard in the bluegrass biopic of Bill Monroe. How wonderful it will be to see the two of them together on the big screen. You can bet that'll be one film Jake will be watching with great interest.

Chesty

Jake's chest meanwhile is an object of contension at PoPSugar with your vote required for its victory against other fine Hollywoodian abs.

And finally...

We've been formally introduced to Jake's lovely new Triumph but it looks as if some PoP spending money has gone on another vehicle, a convertible. But, as always, whatever the vehicle, Jake is leaving an impression. And, in this case, it's as the perfect gentleman.

'My merging lane was coming to an end – and you know what that means – the lane is slowly getting narrower – and my patience is slowly getting less and less. Is anybody going to let me in??!! Finally another dude (did I just say dude?) in a convertible motions to me. He is letting me in! I was reassured that I was a nice guy and having a good hair day. Even better, I check into my rearview mirror after I pull in to wave to this good highway Samaritan and wouldn’t you know it? It was Jake Gyllenhall! Yes the Prince of Persia himself! As I wave thank you, he gives a cool Brokeback Mountain nod of acknowledgement. Is there such a thing as a Brokeback Mountain nod? At any rate, my point is this: just like Charlton Heston parted the Red Sea as Moses, Jake Gyllenhaal parted the sea of traffic for me!'

Yowza! You're right, so close and yet so far.

I wanted to comment on the previous delicious post. There were elements of existentialism within that interview both questions and answers. I remember how uncomfortable Heath was in answering questions yet he answered them with candour and openness. I see that developing more with Jake too, less BS answers of what we want to hear but perhaps more of what he's feeling now. Very sweet and insightful.

As hard as I try to stay away from anything Jake, I'm interested in how his work is being received and so the pride continues to swell for all his achievements to date. Well done Jake, you have IT in spades. I want to enjoy L&OD as much if not more than BBM - I want the surprises.

Yay for Maggie and Peter, I'd love to see them together again. That should be a fun shoot.

Great post - glad that LaOD is being so well received. I can't wait to see it, or at least hear more. Maggie and Peter look incredible as always. :)

Squeeee!!!! Remember the time we complained about (male) film critics on Twitter? Well, seems like the right movie is finally here and now those guys will have a chance to do a proper job with their reviews. I've read other opinions from pre-screenings, all done by men if I'm not wrong, and they were all fantastic.

What Jake did with "Brokeback Mountain" and a large part of the audience will now extend with "Love and other drugs" and practically no-one will remain indifferent.

I'll say it again: I'm so proud of his career. He has a vision, for goodness' sake. ;-)

Hi WDW

Thanks for the fantastic posts recently, I've been speechless. Jake is down to the last eight in the Popsugar shirtless contest, I've been following it from the start. They also announced that he is amongst Glamour's top 50 hottest males......not number one unfortunately!!! (coming in at 32)He is such a lovely person.

On a more personal note I wanted to share with you that I'm sooo excited (and nervous/scared) as I've confirmed my university place today - I'm finally following my dreams and going to be a mature student studying History!

Congratulations, Claire. That's great news. Good luck.

Good to know in advance that many tissues might be needed for LAOD. :) Good to hear it's being well received by audiences in London.

Whoa what a Jake week we're having. Another gorgeous post. Maggie & Peter in the same film and Jake in a convertible... heavenly. :-)

Do you know that double feeling when you're highly anticipating something, that on the one end you're jumping up and down with excitement and on the other you really hope that your expectations don't grow too high?
I've had that with many, many movies that I care for. Trembling in the cinema, waiting for the lights to go out and the movie to start... LAOD is my first opportunity for having that with a Jake movie. The reviews sound so good that I find them scary. And yet somehow I feel confident that this is gonna be a great one.

(congratulations Claire! :-))

Hi Sheba! It was such a lovely interview, I just loved it. And I'm so proud of the reception LAOD is getting! It's going to be special, very special. Great news about Peter and Maggie acting together too - another good day!

Thanks so much 21:35!

Yeay Alejandra! I can hear that squee from here! The guys love LAOD, I love that they do and that they're not afraid to say so. This does appear to be the RomCom for everyone. I definitely agree about how this stretches Jake fanbase. Each film is so different, he's a pleasure to follow.

Congratulations, Claire!!! That is fantastic - you've done such a good job. And history too! What's your period? (Sorry, this is the archaeologist and classicist coming through here...). And great that you've achieved this as a mature student - good job!

I'm new to the PoPSugar (I will always write it like that from now on in) shirtless poll, but great to see Jake in it. Obviously he should win hands down...

Hey Rubes! Good to know we'll be well prepared with waterproof mascara and rubber tissues. IT's great to hear that US and Brit audiences love it so much.

Hi Lady Ekster - posting at the same time :D I know just what you mean but I don't think we have anything to fear with LOAD (and with SC later on). These two films look like they've been made for Jake. Just great for him and for us.

Good days! I know I say this a lot at the moment but it's so true!

Fantastic Claire, congratulations. there's no limit on learning, it's lifelong and to be doing it at a time when you really want to do it is the dream. Well done.

About the helmet wearing being compulsory in CA, I'm so glad that he has the opportunity to be incognito and protect the money maker as well :DD

The only ones that are contenders with Jake are Becks and Bush. What Pop Sugar should do is to have as a prize, someone to personally feel the abs then chose the finalists. It's hard... to chose just from the pictures :/

Hi WDW

I feel drawn to the Medieval period although I have read a fair bit about the ealier periods. I'm sorry but I don't know exactly what it is that you do! I know you have mentioned archaeology in previous posts.

Thanks everyone for the kind words - I truly feel that everyone is so friendly here.

Hey Claire! I was an archaeologist for years (and Mr WDW still is), but I'm in education and publishing these days. I have written a couple of medieval archaeology books but I'm a Romanist by heart (Mr WDW rolls his eyes as he's a prehistorian and they always look down on us).

It's a very friendly place cos WDW readers are FAB!

PS So sorry, forgot to say congratulations to Claire! Did you, and WDW? , see 'Digging for Britain' just now on the beeb? 'Twas good I thought. The Snow Leopards just before were great too.

Ooh TD posting again - I can't keep up...;)

I misssed the snow leopards cos I have a Masterchef addiction but I did see Digging for Britain (I used to do stuff for Time Team so I love all that stuff), and it was good! One of Mr WDW's projects was on there tonight. And my period too, proper Roman archaeology! Great stuff!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ooh love Egyptology TD!! Not studied it but spent some time in the ME and seen many of the sites in Egypt. Fascinating :) We really should meet up for a pint in London!

Oh WDW I'd love that! PM me?
PS congratulations to Mr WDW, I hope his project (desperate to know which one it was :) looked good.

I'm thoroughly enjoying Galaxy Quest this evening - what a great movie. I'd love to see Jake do a clever comedy like this. And love to see him in space!

I saw this movie last week at a private screening in La and I have to say that I was extremely surprised by it. Jake completely owned the part and was wonderful--and I never really liked him in other roles.

Hathaway was just as good as she was in Rachel Getting Married, but can I just say how beautiful she is? Edward Zwick deserves an Oscar just for getting Hathaway completely naked for half of her time on screen...that's not a joke either. And she does have Parkinson's in the film. She just honestly nails the role completely.

Other than that, the writing was good but the film had structural problems. I'd call it a modern day love story set in 1996.

Hathaway and Jake are definite contenders.

It seems people who are not Jake Gyllenhaal fans love his performance in this movie. It is basicly his mature " Jerry Maguire" type of role - he nails it. I truly expect second Oscar nominations for both Jake and Anne. Also, I hear 20th Century Fox is doing a major awards campaign for this film during the award season . I believe the only threat to this film is " Blue Valentine" . It stars Michelle Williams & Ryan Gosling- the film and the performances have already received wonderful reviews from the top film festivals.

P.S. It is cool that the former "Brokeback Mountain " costars will be battling at the Award ceremonies. I'm sure the media will eat this up.

Thanks to you, I just watched the IMDB trailer and loved every minute of it.
Think Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell, and many more romantic couples with fantastic chemistry whom I've watched and adored over the years/
Maggie and Peter represent actings best of the best and I can't wait to see them together.
I was terrified of Peter for years after I saw him in "Boys Don't Cry." Only one other actor has elicited such a visceral response in me and that was Ralph Fiennes in "Schindler's List.

I think it's wonderful Maggie and Peter are going to work together.

So Jake has a convertible now? oooo, I think he decided to buy himself some 'guy toys' I wonder if we'll get to see some pics of the convertible. :D

I wish they were having LAOD premiere here in DC.

Morning everyone! Friday! And distinctly grotty out there although it's supposed to be hot later - hmmm, can't see it...

Hi Tina! Thanks for the link - I do like that blog. Very interesting. And I agree, it's going to be an interesting an awards season (although I seem to remember we were all saying that this time last year!).

Morning Sass! I'm so glad you got to see it - and that is great company for Jake and Anne. It's been something watching Peter's career. I'm so glad they'll be doing this one together. Normally not a subject that would interest me but now I can't wait for it :)

Hi Sweetpea! It'd be great to see pics of Jake out in the convertible. I'm not 100% convinced that this was a correct sighting but who knows?! After the bike, very little can surprise me. It's great to think of Jake having some fun :) And, to be honest, I can't imagine living in California and NOT having a convertible!

Have a good day everyone!

Morning

I'll be watching Digging for Britain today as it clashed with bedtime for a small person. My son loves all things Roman so I think I'm passing on my love of history (he wants to be an archaeologist)as we love nothing better than visiting English Heritage sites on weekends.

If I get stuck and need guidance I know where to come - right here!!

Everyone here is certainly wonderful and as mad about Jake as I am. Enjoy your day.

Thanks for that review, tina! :-D

Jake completely owned the part and was wonderful--and I never really liked him in other roles.

Oh dear... if Jake had such an effect on that man, then how are we going to survive this? I think I'll get me some valium and rent an entire cinema room for myself and a select couple of friends when the time comes. I fear I won't be able to hold my 'intelligent''down to earth' image up in town otherwise. *big grin*

WDW, no way! I'm an archaeology student myself! I'm starting my masters in Roman archaeology this fall!
How awesome to know there are more of us out there who love Jake :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hello everyone! Is it just me or is this Friday dragging somewhat?

Hi Claire! I love that your son's into it so much. Sounds like he'll be a Jake fan too :D I love to visit EH places too. There are a few Roman villas not too far from me and fortunately they always have a nice country poub nearby :)

It's not gonna be easy, Lady Ekster! A private cinema viewing would be so good wouldn't it :) Imagine that! I've been to Brokie BBM viewings and I like the idea of a Jake one too :D

Excellent, Lena! Love to hear more about what people are up to :D I used to work with Roman Archaeologist graduate students in Germany years ago - had such a good time. So many Jake fans are so flippin interesting!

My words is faints - which I hope isn't a premonition as I'm seeing Piranha 3D after work...

sass - I still haven't gotten over my fear of Jack Nicholson in The Shining, but I did survive John Lithgow in Blowout!

Just wached DD again tonight and really enjoyed seeing Jake in his Triumph shirt! The girl in me says, cool, Jake on a bike, but the mother in me is scared as hell for him! Go figure!!
