[Updated] Edible Jake Gyllenhaal, more from Leadville and Anne Hathaway covers Vogue for LAOD

After the invitation and the glimpse in yesterday's post, today we get the official pictures from this week's charity dinner and auction for Edible Schoolyard in NYC. While providing Jake Gyllenhaal with the perfect opportunity to eat and talk food, it also gives us a good look at the Face Pet for the first time. The bear has clearly been tamed while retaining an element of feistiness. Please note how I'm not mentioning the shoes.

We hear more details and see another picture at WWD: 'Alice Waters held her second fundraising dinner for her Edible Schoolyard organization at Craft on Wednesday night, with the help of co-hosts John Lyons, Fernanda Niven, Jonathen Sheffer, Brett Williams and Jake Gyllenhaal. It turns out the actor is a voracious chef: he most recently whipped up a veal stew. "I love to read cookbooks and I subscribe to a lot of cooking magazines. I scour the internet for interesting recipes," said Gyllenhaal, who shops for the local and seasonal. "There's a [food] co-op at my niece's [Ramona, daughter of Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard] school," he said. "We get a lot of stuff from there."' Big thanks to a reader for the link.

While ignoring, as a veggie, the 'veal stew' reference, I did notice this: 'I scour the internet for interesting recipes'. I have great confidence therefore that the scouring will reveal the below for Jake.

The WDW Veggie Saturday Special

Ingredients
1 large egg, some plain flour, 2 lemons, a lime, just the right amount of milk, not too much granary sugar, tequila, a brush of oil (the memento Leaning Tower of Pisa oil bottle is optional), triple sec.

Put a medium heap of plain flour into a mixing bowl. Dent the top and add a large egg. Mix it in roughly and then add just the right amount of milk and vigorously mix until it has the texture of a watery mud slide. Heat frying pan and a touch of oil (not necessarily from a miniature Leaning Tower of Pisa bottle) until it is very hot. Pour about a half of the mixture and spread around the pan. Heat. When a golden brown on the underside flip. Or get someone else to flip and stand back. Maybe do it over a sink or a big work surface. Do the other side.

Meanwhile take a cocktail shaker and add one generous measure of tequila. To it add a measure and a half of Triple Sec. Squeeze a lemon in (avoid pips). Add a little hint of lime. Add approximately five largish ice cubes. Shake.

Remove pancake from pan and as you dress it, repeat the process with the other half of the mix. Sprinkle a thin layer of sugar over the pancake and squeeze the juice from half a lemon and spread. Dab a few drops of tequila across the pancake and add a hint of lime. If you have cointreau handy in your cooking cupboard, this may be added now. Roll pancake and repeat with second cooked pancake.

Finish shaking cocktail and pour into a suitable glass. Add a slice of lime. Salt around the rim is optional. Insert Prince of Persia DVD into DVD player. Settle back and eat, drink and indulge with the WDW Saturday Surprise. (c) WDW.

[Update] For a great account from someone lucky enough to eat pizza with Jake and Anne Hathaway in NYC, take a look here. A taster: 'When Donnie Darko walked past us I (and the rest of the women and men in Franny’s) couldn’t help but notice how darn attractive he was. Tall & brooding, part of that attraction was absolutely due to the way he was dressed. He looked like a movie star. Navy sweater paired with a brown overcoat and knitted scarf. Dress shoes and jeans. Mr. Brokeback looked stunning.' I love that Anne eats pizza and I love that Jake and Anne have pizza together.

Running Jake

Christopher McDougall, the author of Born to Run, has been shedding a tiny bit of light on Jake's appearance at Leadville this summer: 'Q: There are a lot of rumors out there about your book being turned into a movie. Apparently, last August, you were in Leadville with Jake Gyllenhaal, who might play you in the film. Can you shed some light on this subject? A: You know, there’s stuff going on, but from what I understand about Hollywood, there’s always stuff going on and most of it turns into nothing. All I can say right now is that there are people interested. They are exploring it, but it hasn’t gone beyond the level of exploration. At this point, there is nothing confirmed or set up at all. There is a screenwriter working on a script, but I don’t know where that’s going to go.'

'Q: So was Jake with you at Leadville? A: Yes. He was there sort of checking out the scene. He hadn’t been familiar with ultra running. He came with his brother in law, Peter Sarsgaard. I’ll tell you one thing: those dudes can run. They are very strong runners.' So it sounds like Chris did do some running with Jake and Peter.

And finally...

Jake's Love and Other Drugs co-star Anne Hathaway is on the cover of November's Vogue to mark the release of the film. Beautiful! All it needs is a dash of Jake. Source.

ahhh Jake looks so good in those event pictures :D

Thx for all the updates and getting tweets together WDW - you have no idea how much I luv you for that :)

So no febr-premier for me of LAOD - DAMMIT ... *bigsigh*

I most definitely agree, Monica!

Thanks Sasha! Glad you're catching up.

Back under the covers :(

That was an excellent post, WDW! I probably won't be making the pancake recipe you provided, because I'm no good at making pancakes.

Jake's beard is nicely trimmed, but why do I think about putting a stovepipe hat on his head? Is it because he would then resemble young Abraham Lincoln? Nah, that's not it!

Anyway, I hope your flu goes away fast. So Peter Sarsgaard has taken up running? That's good news!

Darling Bluebell said...

*crosses fingers & toes for Jake finding WDW and reading the recipe* Now wouldn't that be awesome. :-D

I like this trimmed Bear a lot better than the wild one in the past couple of sightings. Well done Jake, let's take it a step further next sighting: a full shave!
Have to say he looks a bit sad in the pictures, I miss that charming smile.

I'm curious to see where the Born To Run rumors will lead us in the months to come... I'd really like this project to have Jake as its leading man.

Hi!

Thanks for keeping us so updated even in bed. Get well soon!

If it didn't say Anne Hathaway in the cover I wouldn't have noticed it was her... She looks so different with her hair up. Or is it the touch of photoshop.....? I do not think she needs it anyway.

IMHO, I can't understand why magazines are in this mania for retouching people who do not really need any of that.

Cazajuguetes said...

Yes WDW, the shoes do not match really. But it's our Jake so I can turn a blind eye. But no smiles...? That I can't overlook! ;o)

Serene Hill said...

OH my God, Jake is just basically gorgeous, with or without the beard, though I always prefer no beard. Love the event pics, he is so handsome, the only thing that's missing is that beautiful dimpled smiles, where has they gone? Yes, he looks a bit sad/tired in the pics, he's not sick or anything, right? Hope he's just fine.
It would be great if he really find your pancake recipe WDW, and then maybe he can post some comments here, haha..:D
I'm agree with you, Eureka, I was a little bit surprise that it was Annie on the cover, she looks somehow different with the hairdo and the make-up.
LAOD is soon approaching, YAYY! Can hardly wait...
Thanks for the posts WDW!

Hi!
Yes, Jake looks very serious but very handsome at the same time.
I like very much that picture with Alice Waters - just make it bigger and look into his eyes. Mrrau!
I'm not crazy about idea of Jake playing in Born to run. I'm not sure if it can be interesting for me. I would rather see him in something else.
I like meat and I would love to taste that veal stew. I eat veal very seldom, it's not so easy to buy in my stores. I was crazy about reading recipes for long time. When I read them I can smell the scent of meal. So we have something in common, Jake!
WDW, I made pancakes today for Friday dinner, but a bit different from yours, with spinach and white cheese.
About Annie in Vogue - she looks great. Now it's time for Jake to be on the cover.
Have a nice weekend everybody!

The word is kantake - similar to pancake :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hello! Thanks for the comments - I just updated it with a really good sighting of Jake (and pizza) and messed it up. But fixed it now L)

I still like Jake better with just a touch of scruff but this is a great improvement on the Grizzly Adams look and he always looks so good in a suit. Now, let me make myself clear, Jake, if you've found WDW's recipe and are reading this, this is not IN ANY WAY an endorsment of The Beard, I still hate it and I still think you should shave it pronto. :D

I hope Jake did smile some time during the evening because he sure looks serious in every pic I saw.

Anne is a beautiful woman, I don't know why they photoshopped her face like that. But her dress, hair and make-up really suit her.

Mmmm, I love pancakes! I think I know what I'll have for dinner tonight. :)

Have a good rest, WDW. :)

Wow, I just have to say how exciting it is to have so much, Gyllen-news!!

I adore that Jake had been making the most of his time in NYC. All the sightings are making me squee a lot, lol. :D Whenever he is in the city I make note of the places he enjoys, not to stalk him or anything, but because I think he has great taste. I am a foodie too and it is wonderful to see/hear him enjoy excellent foods. It seems he has been able to be out and about without too much fuss. I think this is perfect, he isn't followed by paps every second but we do have sightings and some pics along the way. :)

Also excellent to hear him and Anne have hung out together. I can't wait for them to do promotion for LAOD.

Anne looks lovely on the cover of Vogue.

Can't get over Chris shaving his head, while Jake is all hairy, lol.

Seeing him at the Alice Waters event he looks great. The beard is nicely trimmed. No mention of the boots from me either, WDW. :)

I would love to see Jake work with Kathryn Bigelow. I hope that rumor becomes reality.

Great to hear the good LOAD news...especially the opening of December in the UK! A great birthday present for you, WDW!

Nice to hear a bit more about Jake and Peter's trip to Colorado too. Not sure what to make of all that but it is good that Jake is interested in many projects. No surprise that he is a good runner.

Nice to see Maggie and Peter in Mumbai. I bet Jake is staying at their place while they are gone. Hope they get some brother/sister/bro-in-law time in NY together.

Jake (and Maggie!) on Shalom Sesame is adorable!! Jake talking about the afikoman (which is some of the Matzoh on Passover which is hidden for the kids to find. When they find it they get a present, usually money) was precious!

Hope everyone is having a great Friday!

WDW - this update is lovely,
I like the way Chef's widow described Jake. And I think thanks to her I found right word for his newest look - not sad, not serious, but ... brooding - at least explanation for this word in my dictionary fits Jake's new look.

Checked that article again, I can see a picture of Jake now.

he looks great, I am glad he trimmed the face pet, probably thought it was time to tame the wild beast.

I am glad he put two things that he likes together, eating and being charitable.

Thanks WDW

Great comments, thank you! Sticking head out of the duvet :) Thanks Paul, Lady Ekster, Eureka, Serene Hill, Get Real, Olympia, Mermon, Sweetpea! Sorry I'm not up to chatting individually but it's doing me a lot of good to read the comments.

Mermon, that's a pic from the video games awards last December. Just beautiful!

I'm trying to persuade Mr WDW to make me pancakes as I had some chilli pizza and it was not good at all!

Hope everyone's having a good Friday!

Alejandra said...

Great post for a Friday, love it! Only thing missing in the new pics is Jake's smile, I agree (and it's no minor detail) but I dig the shoes. And maybe, just maybe he was not so happy about having to trim the epic beard. ;-)

Love Anne in Vogue. And I too would like to see them both on a magazine cover.

"Those dudes can run". That made me laugh and feel proud. Further proof that Jake is perfect. :-D

And another reference to the internet! In truth all that he said back in May was that he was not on Facebook and/or Twitter. The internet is far richer than that and I'm glad Jake appreciates it. The man is definitely perfect. JMHO.

Get well soon, Kate. My cold gives me breaks that make me think "It's gone! I'm cured!". But then I'm coughing again. Rest as much as you can, that'll help.

Have a great weekend, Gyllenhaalics. :-)

Loooove the recipe... and who doesn't adore a man that can cook?!

The whole food thing just makes him so much more attractive :D Wish he'd cook for me ;)
CANNOT WAIT for Love and Other Drugs... :D

Hello WDW and everyone

Get better soon WDW! Those cocktails will sure help. :)

Lots of Jake news in the post. Interesting to hear Chefswidow say how attractive Jake is, and well dressed.

Jake's comments about getting food from Ramona's school show how he is quite settled in New York at the moment. He's been on the East Coast for months now.And mostly pap free, a good change for Jake.

Can't be long now until the LAOD publicity really ramps up.

Cheers

Head on over to Flickr where the New York City Council have uploaded some photos of Jake attending the opening of their first Edible Schoolyard.

Hey WDW, great post, hope your on the mend.
Those pics remind me of the event Jake went to earlier this year that Natalie Portman hosted where he hogged the chefs attention all night & everyone starved, he didnt smile on those pics either must be when he is around food his serious face comes into play. But i agree he looks very handsome & he's getting his moneys worth out of those shoes xx

Darling Bluebell said...

Those Flickr photos are amazing! And we have some big smiles again. :-)

lemniscate said...

Hi WDW and y'all,

Thanks for the update! The photos are a bit... hm, dunno. Was he doing the "Russian etiquette" thing again (don't smile or they'll think you're stupid) or was he just not a very happy bunny that they were taken (judging from his clenched fist, the latter).

All his, I'm Jake *locavore SLOW eco boho hipster dude* Gyllenhaal is driving me cuckoo. I'm doomed... DOOMED!

Hope the "Born to Run" project eventuates. The book is inspiring, though I don't seem to be cut out for long distance running. I'm more of a bush walker type.

Oh gosh... Anne looks regally divine on that Vogue cover. She's "proper foxy" as Jamie Oliver would put it.

lemniscate said...

Hi WDW,

Your recipe's... ehm, intoxicating darling. ;-)
Those are dinner/supper pancakes right? Not like for breakie, brunch, lunch or tea?
I wouldn't be able to stand on my feet after I'd had that, let alone do anything else for the rest of the day. Whoopa!

Perhaps you could start a recipe section on the blog? We could all share recipes! Cool!
Come to think of it, how about adding a "book shelf" and an "iPod playlists" section too? You could also pull in a snippet of your MovieBrit reviews in the sidebar?
Ah, nevermind, darn Blogger cms would just blow up... And it's your blog babe. You have enough work with it as is.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Those Edible Schoolyard pics are great - Jake's out in the community, about as far away from Hollywood as it is possible to get!

Cheers

Good Morning everybody!
Those pics from Flickr are nice and we can see that Jake still remembers how to smile. Maybe he didn't want to scare kids with his serious look or maybe that is just kids' influence on him - made him smile.
Can anyone explain what is it - Edible Schoolyard project - What is all about? Do they have food store in the school, where Jake does his shopping.
Have a good day! And be healthy as much as possible in this autumn time.

lemniscate said...

Hey mermon,

In Australia we have similar projects.
Kids at school plant and tend a vedgie garden. It's a great way for them to learn about gardening, particularly how our food is grown.
They also learn to prepare and cook up the stuff they grow! It's fab.
We have our own version of Alice Waters in Australia, Stephanie Alexander. ;-)
She's an amazing chef and does a lot of charity work, such as the "Kitchen Garden Foundation".
http://www.kitchengardenfoundation.org.au/

Anyway, no one can bring this issue across better than - the one and only - the man,... Jamie Oliver.
Watch his TED talk! One of the best TED talks ever. It will give you a serious kick up the wazoo...
http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/jamie_oliver.html

Love the Flickr photos too. Now I know why he was wearing his bootsies... There was digging involved. ;-)

mermon said...

lemniscate - thank you so much for explanation.
In my primary school we had a garden and we kids were working there on our biology classes. It was not a special project it was just idea of my father - principal of the school - to make school environment look nice, we had roses, many trees, bushes, some plants, vegetables. It was many years ago. When he stopped to work at school nobody cared anymore. Now I can see how wise and educational it was.
I'm watching now Jamie Oliver's talk it's quite long, I found polish subtitles to that!

lemniscate said...

@mermon - You're welcome babe! ;-)
Your father was clearly a wise man.
Jamie explains a little how we have lost our healthy connection to, and knowledge about food over the past few generations. It's good to see how there is a movement happening around the world to turn things around.

mermon said...

Jamie Oliver is great, with big charisma, and what he says is so wise and obvious.
In my country is not so bad. Fast food came late, many years after it was all over the world. Now we see the problem and they remove junk food from school distributors. And Polish kids rather know names of the fruits and vegetables. I hope :) My daughter does. It is all about money, saving time, ready to eat meals. People don't care if it's healthy or not. The kids are the victims of commercial and their parents' ignorance and laziness.
Uff! That was not much about Jake Gyllenhaal, but he seems to know this kind of staff and goes in good and healthy direction :)

Hi there everyone! I'm feeling much more human today - I've even got up :D

Loving the chat about Jamie Oliver (whose reaturants are just fabulous - have to get a plug in here for the one in Reading, Berks. Fabulous). And I like what he's done for British schooldinners although sometimes I wish he would cook while wearing a gag...

Thanks for the link, Nicky :)

Great conversation Lemniscate and Mermon! Yep, those are my Saturday evening treat pancakes when I'm in need of some pampering. There's a TV series starting tonight (Pillars of the Earth) based on one of my favourite books and it may be just the night for them!

I love the idea of sections on books, recipes, music etc. I have thought about that. I may well set up pages for those, including a come and say hello chat page but it requires a bit of work. Any ideas much appreciated!

So a big wave to everyone! Hello Tui, Lady Ekster, Alejandre and Aoif - forgive me for not welcoming you before Aoif! I'm glad to see you here and thanks for your comments!

Off to do another catchup post...

Glad you are feeling better WDW.

Aaaaaaah! *deep sigh* beautiful man.

Thanks WDW for posting this and cheering up a grumpy, cold Saturday.

I can't do long comments anymore 'cos computer is on the blink so its the Blackberry which takes forever.

To me Jake doubles as a movie star that looks so everyday man with a dash extra. Taking the subway in NYC and London or even just going about his life in a non-conformist way makes me love him more.

I love his beard, makes him appear more regal, noble and earnest somehow. And! He wore the shoes I love. One day I may pluck up the courage to post my video of when I met Jake. Its so atroacious but you can hear me say 'look, he's not wearing the shoes' hahaha.

Hope you get well soon WDW, you're making the rest of us feel well with these lovely posts :)

(I get my Blackberry Torch on Monday. Hopefully commenting won't take so long in future)
