Jake Gyllenhaal digs up Gravesend (or opens Edible Schoolyard in NYC)

Update: Looks like Jake is leaving the Big Apple today with this from everyone's favourite organic foodie place Sun in Bloom: 'Jake Gyllenhaal stopped by Sun In Bloom to say good bye & pick up his breakfast & food for the plane. He's been so supportive and is a delightful human being! It's energizing to be surrounded by light'.

With barely time to digest his food after the Edible Schoolyard dinner and auction in NYC on Thursday, Jake Gyllenhaal yesterday attended the opening of the first Edible Schoolyard in New York City. In Gravesend to be precise, which as a Brit, did give me something of a doubletake. Edible Schoolyard is a programme that aims to bring schoolchildren as close as possible to the source of their food so that they know and understand what they are eating. It also provided Jake with the perfect chance to get a little bit dirty with a shovel once again.

The benefactor of this Schoolyard, contributed to by Jake, is John Lyons, the president of production at Focus Features, the company behind, of course, Brokeback Mountain. The four pictures below are from Sheepsheadbites and you can read a full account of the event there.

New York City Council has posted some photographs from the event on Flickr. There are a couple here and you can see all the others here.

The great thing about these photos from yesterday is that, for the first time in a while, we can see Jake's beautiful smile. On a side note, I have no doubt that Jake's recent experiences living as Sasquatch in a cave outside LA has helped his credentials for this project no end. Fortunately, Jake did get the chance to eat something.

Update: Thanks to IrisGirl for the information that Jake's edition of Shalom Sesame is the episode on Passover which, if the DVDs follow the pattern of Jewish holidays, will be out in the spring. Thanks for the info!

Pictures with thanks from Sheepheadsbites and NYC Council.

Thanks WDW for posting this so quickly. Gosh I just posted on the last post. He needs to bring that shovel to my house. I can't even cultivate thyme in my back garden. Nice cause to be involved in Jake. Excellent!

Hi WDW!
You are not feeling well and keep on working for us. Thank you for that. Get well!

All those pictures are great! I'm so used to bearded Jake right now, that I wonder if I would recognize him after shave. He looks so relaxed between kids. And that last pic is funny - Jake with an apple, I guess, and a shovel. It looks like if he was very hungry and wants to work at the same time:)
I respect him so much for getting involve in such a good educational project like this one or another from a year before. Those pics under the link WDW posted, from 19 February 2009 are so lovely.
I like Jake and nature to be together, like in those projects or Brokeback Mountain.

Do you remember Sun in Bloom restaurant in NYC, where Jake was seen lately few times, here is a clip showing this place. It is quite small and food looks very tasty.

One more time, thanks WDW, excellent pics, that smile. Similar event last year, no change!!! and detail to be with the President of a production ... great.
He is away from public life, but always know where he is, what he's doing. I am very surprised by this

My pleasure Sheba! And thanks for posting in the last comments - let me know how you get on with the new BBerry. I don't have a garden so Jake has his work cut out :D May take a while...

Thanks Mermon! I'm feeling much better today :) I love these pics - a mix of funny and hot. Love the apple and shovel pics! The Feb 2009 pics are just gorgeous. Thanks for the video link :)

That's great Lady Ekster! These are just perfect - and a cause to match too.

Hi Get Real! That's just how I feel too :)

Thanks Sasha! I love the length of the hair :D

Hi Karmentxu :D It's interesting to think that Jake has worked to helped Lyons on this project. I like that.

IrisGirl commenting in the previous comments mentioned that Jake is doing the Passover edition of the Shalom Sesame series and so that'll probably be next spring. Great to get a heads up on that :) Thanks!

Thanks WDW. NIce to see Jake with the kids getting hands on with his experience at the school. WOW so he had a BBM connection right in his midst.

I wonder if Jake has a garden back in LA? I wouldn't be surprised if he likes to grow his own veggies. Well we know he likes to go to farmer's markets.

He looks better now that he's tamed the wild beast

hope you feel okay. Today I am the one feeling Blah

That picture in blue is so beautiful. No one can say, that he doesn't look great with his beard. I started to like it. And his smile is so warm. But really in his eyes is something sad, like he misses someone, or he's tired of being alone.
Fresh WDW update - so goodbye New York City! Aimee Follette - said such a lovely words about him. It's amazing how he impresses people he has contact with, or even without a contact - like I'm impress :) Everybody has only good words to say about him. But I said it before. I think they have agreement about posting news of his visit in Sun In Bloom.(..He's been so supportive..) And it's so nice he came to say good bye and take some food. That means to SIB, that he really liked it. I wonder if they will allow him to bring this food on the plane?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Lucia! Love that picture! I think it's the same ad in they'll above - gorgeous!

Hi Georgie!

I think it's wonderful, Mermon, that Jake went back to SIB to say goodbye. Love that :)

thanks, WDW. I am feeling a little better now. We had some excitement earlier, my neighbor's cat got chased up our tree by a dog. So it took some time(and hauling an extension ladder) to get her down.

I was wondering when Jake was going to leave the big apple. Oxford huh? Maybe he's going back to Calif. I wonder if Atticus was with him? He's been in NY for a while. I bet he will miss being able to wander about without the paps dogging him.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the new pics!

Leaving NY? He really made the most of his time in the city that never sleeps. I really enjoyed all the posts and comments.

I found a little something, may be you already know about it. Radio feeds for Brokeback Mountain, Zodiac and Price of Persia in mp3 format here:

http://www.radiolinkshollywood.com/detail_show_search.asp?q=jake+gyllenhaal&Submit=Search

Download or listen the clean cut ones. Really nice sound quality. All have favorite lines, like 'you really enjoy telling me what to do', 'who says you are a beauty', 'difficult not impossible', etc.

;o)

And for Bubble Boy fans some sound clips from the movie:

http://www.moviewavs.com/Movies/Bubble_Boy.html

Not so good quality but fun.

Enjoy!

Hi!
Wow! The beard is almost gone!
He's not glad being surrounded by paps. Not even one smile. But at least we know he flew home safely :)

thanks god he didn´t have to starve!

Morning all!

Hi Abby - I can't help it, I like to see him :) Most of the time, Jake is an expert at avoiding the papas as we know.

Most people as they walk along, including an airport, don't smile all the time.
If they were taking pictures of "unknown" people walking along don't think they would look much different.
Naturally there are times when he is annoyed by them but he has said he understands its going to happen.
And when it comes to pictures they are a split second in time and even if he smiled somewhere along the way it didn't get caught.
Wonder too if you continue to have the same look then each picture is similiar and not that big a deal to people buying the pictures.
