Love and Other Drugs 'the sexiest movie in years'? Jake Gyllenhaal 'very cute' in NYC and the hero's journey that is PoP

EW's Dave Karger has been talking about some of the films that he thinks may be in for an Oscar shot and, despite the fact that there are one or two oddities included, I'm pleased to see Love and Other Drugs on the list. 'The Jake Gyllenhaal/Anne Hathaway comedic drama reminds me a lot of Up in the Air and Jerry Maguire (both past Best Picture nominees). And it’s perhaps the sexiest movie I’ve seen in years. It won’t be for everyone, but if most critics go for its blend of titillation and tragedy, then it’s a contender for one of the five “B-list slots.'

Jake in NYC and a test

Before I start the rest of the post I just want to point out that you are not experiencing deja vu. This is not yesterday, this is today. I want to make this point because over the last 24 hours Jake Gyllenhaal has again been spotted in New York City. But where? Here is the Jake Quiz. Take your time.

Jake Gyllenhaal has today been spotted in:
  1. A gondola?
  2. A biplane?
  3. A compound of tapirs?
  4. The officer's mess of the USS Enterprise?
  5. A restaurant?
As a clue, here are the sightings. Firstly, Jake was seen in Morandi's in NYC, which has a menu that perfectly combines seafood and pasta. I should point out that I don't eat cute food and so I'm a little alarmed by the octopus but this looks very tasty indeed. Jake was also seen in line for a milkshake, or at least in line with other people who wanted a milkshake. Today, Jake was back having lunch at the new favourite Sun in Bloom where it was noted 'He was very cute indeed! And so soft spoken, and sweet, and calm, and and and ;-) I just didn't want to disturb him. I'm sure that when you've been famous for a while it gets annoying having people all over you all the time!'

And finally...

As Prince of Persia continues its DVD release around the world, today the Australian site Age has a video interview with Jake from the filming days and it's very nice to hear Jake talk with passion about his film:

'It was set in such an interesting world - for me the movies that I always love are the movies that are in other worlds, where you have the capability to do almost anything but still be a human being, not a superhero. It goes beyond that level of what you're used to seeing or what any human being could do.'

'The tone of the movie is a real hero's journey but it's comedic too, I mean there are real moments of fun, funny stuff... It's a hero's journey, it's a love story and it's a comedy'.

Thanks to IHJ for the new old pictures of Jake from the LA press conference for Jarhead.

Love the pictures. Again clean-shaven, but this time I did know what that meant. *grin*

With all these food sightings I'm starting to wonder if Jake is not only going to look like Sasquatch hair-wise but also weight-wise. Where does he leave all those calories if no-one spots him having a workout? I mean, ehm, to be tweeted about is to be, of course. ;-)

What does 'B-list slot' mean? As in: a B-film? :-(

Thanks WDW. I wish I were in NY hitting the restaurants. I wonder how much longer he'll be in NY? I don't think he likes the cold much so I guess it depends on what talk shows he'll be doing for LAOD

if he's still wearing the beard I know Ellen will ask him about it.

I want to comment, I want to comment! I've been offline for 2 weeks and I feel a bit ill and might pass out in the next half hour...

Seriously, my computer broke 6 days before Oct. 2nd and I only got it back last Sunday. Since then, I've been catching up. So much here, so many wonderful things! Helps me forget this bad cold I'm going through. I'm checking the posts and the comments and everything. Kinda regret I was not here to throw my two cents in at the time but above all, I'm enjoying.

Now, considering the beard is still there I'd like to say... I don't mind it one bit. The adorable pics from the New Yorker fest and these sightings with all the "so soft spoken, and sweet, and calm, and and and..." speak of absolute loveliness. I'm not sure how Hollywood appreciates loveliness, but I guess for a lot of us -who are "just people"- it can be invaluable. I'm simply glad seeing that he can be a regular person. I dunno. I still think fondly of Kurt Cobain's "No rockstar is royalty" and I think being talented shouldn't drive you away from people. From his filmography alone, I guess Jake is aware of all of that and a LOT more.

I love him so much...

Thanks again, WDW. I'm feverish but happy. ;-)

WDW, loved the multiple choice list, but at this stage we do know.....
How many restaurants are there in NY?
Is he in a challenge to try them all? ;-) LOL

How exciting if LAOD makes it to the Oscars. More lovely red carpet pictures and videos for us to enjoy.

@Alejandra: Take care. At least you have wonderful reading and comments till you recover.

Thanks for reminding me of Kurt "No rockstar is royalty" Alejandra and I hope your cold gets better soon.

I always wish I was in New York but even more so when I know that Jake is there.

I'm so looking forward to LAOD. Fingers crossed the first full scale promotion will be starting up soon. Sounds like it has a good enough chance of an Oscar nomination with there being 10 best pictures slots.

Good late evening everybody!
WDW and Alejandra, take care and be healthy!
About Jake eating a lot - I think it only looks like that. It seems he drinks healthy drinks like milkshakes [I like banana one], vegetable drinks, eats healthy food and since he's not at home town - wanting to eat something he has to go somewhere out. We have breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, supper. It's 5 meals. So he's justified. And thanks God he does it in restaurants. That's why we can hear about him almost every day. And from restaurant to restaurant he has to take metro and we hear about him again:) I think he does it for us, his fans :)
When I hear people saying such a nice things about him I'm melting.

Have you noticed in POP, that a name of little friend of young Dastan was Biss. So probably he brought him to the palace and Biss became his "right hand".

In comments under article about Oscars I found one not completely enthusiastic about LAOD - "...Jake and Anne are both great, but the script and direction are mediocre at best...". Well let's hope it's lonely opinion. I just can't wait to make my own. I'm not sure if I can be objective :) I like anything Jake touches. So far.

Hello Lady Ekster! I do agree :D With all this restaurant dining and milkshakes etc Jake must be spending the remaining 18 hours a day in the gym - no wonder he's been eluding us! I think B-list means here 'a lesser film' and so definitely not applicable to LAOD :D

Me too, Sweetpea :D Jake has the AFI think at the start of November so he'll be back in LA for that. I suspect that in the meantime he's enjoying spending time with his family and being nagged about the face fur :D

Alejandra, good to see you! Sorry to hear about the fever and not being well. I sympathise, I've been unwell for much of the last 2 months, it's rotten. But I'm glad I haven't had the computer problems! I hope those are fixed for you now.

I love that Jake is a movie star and a person out living his life just like the rest of us too. IT makes him extra special :) Get better!

Hey Carol, me too! I really hope we get some publicity soon, and on this side of the pond too. I'm missing Jake so much I'm starting to twitch...

Hi Mermon :D I'm glad Jake's eating out a lot too - at least we can hear about him while at the same time he gets a good dinner :D That has to be one of the very rare reviews not in favour of LAOD. Fortunately well outnumbered by the positive. Thanks for te get well wishes! Feeling much better today :)

Hey TD! It was a puzzler, eh? And agreed about Ramona. Mr WDW has a beard and small children and animals are known to run from him...

Hi WDW and y'all,

Too swamped at work these days to keep up with his lovely Jake-ness. *sigh*

So many lovely tweet snippets trickling in though ("so soft spoken, and sweet, and calm, and and and...") *thud*.
Interesting resto choices... "Sun in Bloom" sounds like a very cosy, healthy and healing eatery, being organic/raw and all. Not too many of those here sadly. Reminds me, I need to kick-start my annual detox.

Take care WDW! Hope you get well soon. Thanks so much for keeping us up to date even though you're not feeling well. You're a LEGEND! ;-)

Get well soon too Alejandra!

See you'all on the other side of this agile, pressure-cooker project. Have a great time Jakin'...
and may the sweet furry man bless us with more bearded pictures ;-)

I really don't think LAOD is an Oscar-type film. The early Anne nom buzz really confuesd me....
But I hope LAOD will be a hit.BOM is predicting LAOD very low.I just want them eat theirown **** :-p

Whatever happens with LAOD there will be a lot of positives for Jake and Anne.
It's certainly not a family film so its not going to have the type of box office that something like that would have.
And it also might be the type of movie that will do very well in DVD.

Hello WDW and everyone

Yes even though the R rating of the movie might mean not so much box office, the movie was made for a relatively small sum (did I read $30 million)so doesn't have to make millions and millions of dollars.

Jake is eating very healthily at the vegan resturant! That's good to hear, that Jake is looking after himself.:)

I'm enjoying the blog and comments. Thank you WDW and everyone.

Cheers

Tui

yes,I understand R-rated film(esp. rom-con) has a smaller market.
But last time I checked "The ugly truth".It opened 27 million in first weekend, and total BO was almost 89 million .
Maybe LAOD has a chance :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone! My word is 'toxic' - oh dear...

Thanks Lemniscate! I'm feeling much better now. I certainly understand that swamped at work thing. What a couple of weeks! I love the sound of Sun In Bloom too - we have a few places like that round here but one usually ends up in the pub :D

Hi Hui! I think LAOD is going to do just fine and it doesn't matter to me too much what some critics say :)

I totally agree, KC :)

Hi Tui! It was made for such a small amount - as Ed Zwick said in the interview here posted a couple of days ago - and I love that Jake and Anne had enough faith in it to take quite a pay cut. And yes it's not a family film. Quite a difference from PoP! And thanks :)

Morning Hui!

I think LAOD will have more actual sex scenes and more nudity than "The Ugly Truth" and possibly even more cussing.
Think also UT had violence and intense type scenes and that can also draw at least a PG-13 or R even without any sex.

Karen Durbin of Elle Magazine praised both LAOD and Blue Valentine- and the performances. She expects Gyllenhaal , Hathaway, Michelle Williams , and Ryan Gosling to all be nominated for Academy Awards.

I will not think of Oscar, because I do not think it will be nominated. At the moment I just want it to be a success.

I've seen four of the ten movies on Karger's list. It still seems unfair that people like me who go regularly to see movies from January through the end of the year are denied access to most of the eventual award nominees until the holiday season. Then it becomes necessary to cram in a lot of extra movies so we can have a decent shot at knowing what the media are talking about. Doing such thuings in a hurry guarantees that I won't get a chance to really concentrate. I'll miss things in the favored movies. :-(

This week has been a very crowded one. There were five movies I wanted to see, and I've seen three of them so far. I haven't seen Hilary Swank's "Secretariat" yet (and don't really want to, but it'll probably get some award nominations), but it's inevitable that I will.

"Never let me go" had a big link to Jake: Carey Mulligan, who was in "Brothers" with him. As for "It's Kind of a Funny Story," there's Zack Galifianakis, who was in "Bubble Boy" with Jake, and Jim Gaffigan, who was in three movies with Maggie Gyllenhaal ("Away we go," "Trust the Man," and "Great New Wonderful"). Yesterday I saw "Life as we know it," which has only the most tenuous link to Jake: Christina Hendricks was in "Jake in Progress," which wasn't about the particular Jake we're dealing with here. ;-)

Hello everyone! I've a stinking cold this evening so apologies for not having been around.

Ooh let's hope so, KC :D

Thanks for the links, Jen!

I hope you had a good birthday Sweetpea, although with Dastan about, i think it must've been :)

Thanks for the link, Karmentxu - like that! It's in the new post with a thanks :)

Hi there Monica :) It's not something that troubles me - we'll see what happens. I do think it's going to be such a success!

Hey Paul! There are some lousy films on that list, but we're getting to the time where there are lots of things to see and I'm struggling to keep up! But much better than earlier in the year :)
