Source Code to open the SXSW Film Festival on 11 March 2011 and a Jake Gyllenhaal interview as LAOD opens in Australia

Source Code, directed by Duncan Jones and starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Michelle Monaghan is to open the South by Southwest Movie Film Conference and Festival in Austin, Texas, on 11 March 2011. The press statement, courtesy of Moviefone, read as follows:

'"We are delighted to welcome Duncan Jones back to SXSW. His debut Moon showed an intelligence, skill, and exceptional use of limited resources that's exactly the kind of filmmaking we love to support," said Film Conference and Festival Producer Janet Pierson. "Source Code is a terrific follow-up; it's a smart, suspenseful thriller, and a perfect fit for our 2011 Opening Night!"'

After the excitement of the Golden Globes nomination, there was little joy for Love and Other Drugs among the SAG nominees announced today - in fact they were a completely different kettle of fish, as Johnny Depp, Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling would also attest. However, there was the news that I Remain by Alanis Morisette, the closing theme to Prince of Persia, is among the 41 songs up for consideration by the Academy for the Oscars. It's quite a list.

Love and Other Drugs opens in Australia today and that means more interviews. In this one from Filmink we hear from Jake: '"It brought up lots of questions for all of us. Anne Hathaway's character being sick is such a huge part of the movie, but we all fall apart. It's just the nature of being a human being. Your body deteriorates, and that's the fact."

'Working on the film has understandably given Gyllenhaal unique insights into the pharmaceutical industry, and whether or not we're an overmedicated society which thinks that everything can be cured with a pill. "Maybe we're all too trusting," the actor suggests. "We're not listening to our hearts. I don't want to make a blanket statement about that, but in the movie, my character says to Anne's character, ‘You're my little blue pill', so perhaps whatever we need in a pill we can get in intimacy instead maybe."'

'Gyllenhaal certainly agrees that love may be the most powerful drug of all. "Yeah, I'd agree, if I'm a human being," he smiles. "I sure hope that I am. If you have it and it's real, then it doesn't matter how long you have it for. You can't really fake that."'

I love whenever I hear more about Source Code. I know we're still all rooting for LAOD during the awards season but I can't wait to learn more about SC.

I never heard of SXSW FF.

Hi Sweetpea - I love to hear about it too although of course here and in Europe LAOD isn't even out yet. It's a very well known festival so it's a great place for Source Code to open in the spring.

I've decided, I'm not gonna worry about reviews or box office for Jake's upcoming movies anymore. Just hope he enjoyed making the movies and I hope I'll enjoy watching them. :)
I've to admit the Source Code trailer, while ok, seemed a little generic to me. I hope I'm wrong about that.
I'm still so happy for Jake and Anne for being acknowledged for their LAOD performances, despite the movie not being liked that much. Big thanks to the HFPA. :)

Congratulations to Duncan Jones and the Source Code team! Sounds good! :-D

"Perhaps whatever we need in a pill we can get in intimacy instead maybe." I love that quote. So true on both physical and mental level. Maybe not on all physical terrains ;) but mentally... oh definitely. ;)

Hi JF! That sounds very wise - I'm never too bothered by box office as it seems to depend on so many things, not necessarily if it's a good film or not, or if Jake does a good job. I just enjoy the films. I love the SC trailer - it's right up my street this sort of film. Such a range of roles over the last year :D

Hey Lady Ekster! I love the way Jake things - he seems to know exactly what to say. I love to hear him talk about love and people.

I love that he tried out so many different genres. :)

Me too, JF, it's one of the things I love most about Jake and what makes me so fascinated by his career (past, present, future) :)

These festivals delivery of Hollywood awards are an endless monotony. A lot of women are full of plastic surgery with make up as clown.

The current movies are monotonous too and the themes are ridiculous!

Well it is here in Europe!!! The people in USA must learn how they could make a party.

The festival of light in France for instance!!!

Fête des Lumière in Lyon in December!

Wow anon! That's some generalisation! There are some pretty good light festivals round here too. Not quite the be all and end all though (especially if you're a movie fan who writes about movies)

Um... I am still glad they show Source Code at the SXSW Film Festival, though... Because, well...Source Code is a "film" and the SXSW is a film festival, so what better occasion could there be to show it? Opening the Fête des Lumière with Source Code could be kind of confusing for the Virgin Mary worshippers...

Oh man, as much as I am looking forward to Source Code, I am really starting to get scared of the long Jake draught that is waiting for us after Source Code. Release date for SC in Germany is May 5th acc. to IMDB, so it will take longer for me till the draught starts, but still...

Jake must get back to work!!! Or do something that at least Nailed is going to be released to tide us over!!!

Have a good day everyone!!!

Morning Uli! Well put :D I know what you mean there is a possibility that we are going to have quite a wait. I just hope it won't be as long as the 2 year one after Zodiac - what a long time that was. I just hope something comes up quickly - Rendition happened so fast - and LAOD and SC. It'll be fun to follow Jake filming something again.

Have a great Friday everyone! My last day at work today - phew :)

Hi, WDW. In an earlier post you said "I've not seen any of the other movies in Jake's [Golden Globes] category - two of them (Tourist and Alice) because I haven't heard anyone describe them as anything but rubbish. I would agree with you on "Alice," but I saw "The Tourist" last night. Unlike "Alice," which seems to have been made with no clear audience in mind, "The Tourist" is for male viewers who would like to see a return of the golden age of film, when actresses were known for their beauty and glamor. Angelina Jolie oozes glamor. She moves slowly so that you can enjoy how wonderful she looks. Is this narcissism? Yes, absolutely. But weren't those legendary screen beauties also narcissistic? Yes, absolutely. And Angelina shows a real vulnerability under the self-assurance. As for Johnny Depp, he has a huge scret to reveal at the end, and I'm not going to spoil it. I can't find any Jake links in "The Tourist." Maybe one will eventually turn up.

@paulh It's nice to know that someone actually appreciated The Tourist. I can easily understand how it has such appeal for the male audience. Personally, when I saw it I was not blinded by Angelina Jolie; I was there mostly for Johnny Depp who was providing the appeal for the female audience. Unfortunately I did not enjoy the movie. I found it to be unengaging, sort of boring, somewhat predictable, and very disjointed as if it couldn't decide if it wanted to be a comedy, a caper, a travelogue, or a glamorous return to a former era. Even Depp's tremendous talent could not save this movie. But this is all just my opinion, even though it is shared by many of my movie-going friends. I hope that we can amicably agree this is one film that more than proves every movie viewing is an individual, personal experience.

Sorry! I meant to sign that previous post with comments to paulh regarding The Tourist.

It's almost Jake's birthday! I hope he has a nice time with his family on the East coast!
(just thought I'd say this in case there's not another update until after the 19th).

Hi!
Congratulation to Source Code for being a movie opening SXSW Film Festival. I think is very good promotion for the movie.
And to Alanis Morisette for "I Remain" nomination. I like that song very much.

Besides GG nominations, let's remember about Jake and POP chances in People's Choice Awards
(5 January 2011). I tried to vote today, but it's already impossible (:

Congratulation to Source Code... yes, it's always nice to hear about Source Code, I loved the trailer, and think it will be real awesome...
And I was thinking too about the time gap we'll have to wait till Jake next film after Source Code, cause a film production usually take at least 1 year to be ready, right? And I'm curious to what role Jake would like to take next, it's always been interesting.
Hope LAOD would do well in Australia!
Thanks for the post WDW!!!

Nothing new but all together.

Topher Grace was considered for the lead role in Source Code.

Hi Paul! Thanks so much as always for your movie opinions :D I love old style film glamour myself and I'm a fan of Angelina Jolie (loved Salt) but I can't see this in The Tourist, personally. I think the film was a mistake for Johnny Depp but, as I've said before, not as big a mistake as the endless Pirates movies.

Hey Susan, without having seen the film, I tend to agree. A film has to engage its audience, male and female, and I think Johnny and Angelina were miscast in a poor film.

Hi Margot! I'll be doing a birthday post - thanks for commenting :D

I loved that song too, Mermon! Thanks for the reminder about the People's Choice awards - I always forget those awards :D

Hi Serene Hill :D IT's always been such an interesting aspect of following Jake - you can never guess what'll be next.
