This emergency post is brought to you tonight because we have just been given one of those rare treats - an audio interview with Jake Gyllenhaal that you can wallow in and savour for a full 35 minutes. This interview, conducted by phone, is presented by Scott Feinberg and I suggest you rush over there now to download and listen to it.
Highlights include talk about Jake's family, his early movie-watching (and making) experiences and how, interestingly 'It hasn’t been until recently that I knew that I wanted to do it for my life'. Jake also reveals that, as a very young man, he failed an audition for Ang Lee's Ride with the Devil (1999). As well as his early roles, Jake discusses the more recent movies: 'I’ve been starting to find a real ease, I feel like, in the acting process and off-screen'. And, finally, trying to live a very private life in a world that loves celebrity.
The interview is here. Thanks to IHJ for the picture.

WDW - Uff! I listened to it. It wasn't easy for me because Jake's voice by phone was changed. Too bad, because interviewer voice sounded normal. Jake said many interesting things, but I have to listen to it at list one more time, to understand more. If you could include more details - would be great! ;)
"At least" of course :) Sorry!
Hi Mermon! I'm still working through the interview myself. I'll do a proper report on it tomorrow and upload a full transcript :) It's been a while since we've had anything like this. I just wanted to get the link up while I work on it. Put a smile on my face :)
^^Good to know. I do not understand everything, because the audio is not very good for me.
thanks.
It was nice to hear Jake opening himself. I love his radio interviews. Usually he says much more in them then in TV.
And under that link you gave,it's a sort of resume of interview, so it will be easier to understand more. I discovered it after listening.
WOW!! What an incredibly awesome interview! It was difficult to understand in some places because it was being recorded over the phone, but that just made me want to listen even harder. Covering all that territory from childhood to the present and referencing all those movies he's made--including Highway!--my hat is off to the interviewer for asking intelligent questions and letting Jake take his time to answer. What a difference it makes when someone holding a microphone isn't simply looking for a sensationalized soundbite.

He is a genius. Maybe I am missing a lot of other talented people's works and thoughts because I'm so focused on Jake... but I don't regret it. He keeps me focused on him. And I wouldn't say I'm obsessed. I would say I am delighted. :-)
I certainly could use a transcription of this interview. But I managed to catch most of it (or at least, that's what I think: I'll compare notes later, I guess ;-)). And I loved listening to it, for one. In the written version, interviews can be very moving. But to be able to hear him say certain things... or even the rythm of his thinking... that's... something else.
Thank you for the heads up, WDW. Loved the pic you chose for this post too. :-)
Did you listen to the same interview I did? There was nothing delightful about it.
Was he drunk , tired or both? He could barely string a few thoughts together. What has happened to him? In the pics from over the weekend he looked at least 10 years older than he is.
it sounded to me like he had a cold. I guess going from NY to Calif can do that to you
I like this interview - Jake seems pretty candid here (from what I can hear). It's finny that the interviewer seems very nice and intelligent but keeps on trying to butt in and ask another question (which is his job) and Jake just keeps on talking. lol.
Is that picture in this post from the 'Brothers' era? He looks great in it.
Morning everyone! Is it Friday yet...?
Hi Monica and Mermon!
Morning Susan! I think Jake makes a great interviewee on the phone - maybe he forgets it's a formal interview and there's the time to chat when presumably, he's in the comfort of his own home, hotel room.
Delighted is a great way to put it, Alejandra! I've always said that Jake is my passion.
Hi 04:48 - Jake quite often sounds like he has a cold in phone interviews, it's strange! And he certainly wouldn't be the only one to have a cold at the moment... :(
Hi there Margot! That picture is from the 'Mystery Photoshoot' that popped up over the Prince of Persia summer - love them!
Have a great day everyone!
Loved it!
Radio interviews Rock. I don't want to repeat myself. I agree with most of what has been said here already.
But want to say:
- I Love to hear his career sum up in his own words.
- Too bad first minutes sound was so bad. I'd loved to hear better about his mom and early acting experiences...
- I Liked how he explained how he gave it all for October Sky. Even combed his hair with gel for the audition and picked a 50's like shirt. :o)
- I Liked he mentioned Donnie Darko & Highway we love so much. And learn that Highway never got to the cinemas(I didn't know that).
- I Liked knowing how he was in a search with movies like Rendition, Brothers and now seems that with LAOD he has figured it out.
- I Liked how he understands us Gyllenhaalics, for he is fan of other people and likes following them too.
- I Feel bad that he can't be as honest as he would be cause of his popularity and being exposed to anyone with a camera. And not having his words interpreted right. But he can't fear that from us, right? ;o)
- I Loved and was delighted with these 30 something minutes of pure Jake!
You found a jewel WDW. Thanks!
I listened to the interview. I thought Jake sounded very good. I liked how candid he was. How he described his career and how he got the part of Oct Sky (one of my faves) where his mind was at the time and how he has developed over the years. I didn't know he had auditioned for Ang before. I was also interested to hear about his view on the intrusion into his private live by the tabloids and paps. And how careful he has to be about what he says.
I had to laugh when he told the story about how he gave a chair as a party favor to a guest at his parent's home.
I do hope that he can find a way to guard his privacy. Much as I do like getting to see him jogging or shopping. I would prefer that he isn't hounded.
I wonder if he knows about the fans taking pics of him on the subway?
thanks for the link, WDW
sweetpea
HI WDW and all...
I just finish download the audio, haven't listen to it yet...
I've always loved Jake voice, especially like, when he narrates something, the way he tell the story, he is a great storyteller, isn't he?
Would love to read some proper report of it tomorrow, cause I'm sure it would be a little difficult to listen to it, since it was recorded from the phone.
Thanks for the posts WDW...
Hi Eureka! Ooh, I love those highlights :D This is a special one, eh?
Hi Sweetpea - I think that most of the time Jake does a very good job of avoiding being papped. In NYC, except for these odd pics on the train, he seems to succeed in living a private life.
Hi there Serene! I'm just working on a full report now :)
As I say, busy on the next post so I'll have that up later this evening :) Once I've eaten some bangers and mash :D
WDW, I'm waiting impatiently.
Girls, thanks for your comments, now I understand more, what was all about. I will wait for what WDW'll write and then listen to the interview one more time.
In the meantime - do you remember Jena Malone - Gretchen from Donnie Darko? - here are some news about her.
Jena Malone
That other Ang Lee's movie he auditioned - Ride with the Devil (1999)-Tobey Maguire - has a part in it. I wonder if he won casting over Jake, or had another part to play. The fate cross their paths - Brothers, Jake suppose to replace him in Spiderman. They "had" the same girlfriend - Kirsten Dunst - Jake in real life, Tobey in Spiderman. That's interesting.
Hi Mermon! I do remember Jena Malone, she's certainly come on a long way now since DDarko. As for Tobey, I wonder if Brothers gave them some kind of closure - maybe so.
I've just posted part 1 as this is quite a project - so much material, so much to talk about! The best interview for years!
