Jake Gyllenhaal being considered for The Bourne Legacy

The next Bourne movie will be a little different - it won't have Bourne in it. Deadline has reported that Tony Gilroy, the director and writer of The Bourne Legacy, is meeting with actors in LA this week to make the Big Casting Decision and among those being considered is Jake Gyllenhaal. This may help to explain Jake's recent meetings, haircut and shave - or not.

Here is the full list: 'Joel Edgerton, Josh Hartnett, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Paul Dano, Michael Pitt, Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund, Michael Fassbender, Luke Evans, Alex Pettyfer, Taylor Kitsch, Benjamin Walker.' The list will be cut quickly because several have availability issues - possibly not something that would hamper Jake's selection.

Jake has regularly spoken of his admiration for Matt Damon plus there is his friendship with Doug Liman, the director of the original The Bourne Identity. Jake undoubtedly has the look and talent to play a smart spy and, if he is still looking for a franchise to stamp his name on, this could be a worthy possibility.

I need to get this out... Tobey Maguire? Alex Pettyfer?

That would be nice indeed! Seems like now would be the right time for Jake. Even the way he looks in Source Code should earn him some extra points (btw, some of the other names in the list are a no-no to me). Fingers crossed! ;-)

Have a great start of the weekend. :-)

Excellent possibilities for the Jakester!! But I agree: Tobey Maguire??? That would be like Joseph Levitt Whatshisname!

Exciting news, WDW! Jake is a perfect fit for something like this. Fingers crossed for this one - or something equally good - soon!

I had the same reaction - Tobey Maguire? and to some of the others as well.

Happy Friday!
Susan

I do agree - Alejandra! Source Code can't fail to help. Jake really looks the part. Thanks - and you!

Hi Gyllenhaalisgr8 - I just can't see Tobey Maguire in that role at all, and some of the others too..

Happy Friday, Susan!

Hi WDW...
Great updates!!!
Haven't watch any of the Bourne series yet, never been such fan of Matt Damon, but hear like it's a good movie?? But if this mean Jake will be some kind of a spy there, I will definetely go for it! :D
Jake presenting the Oscar? That will be the best thing cause I will be able to watch the Oscar although not the Live one... Star Movies will show it Live at Monday around 8.30 a.m and I would be at school at that time:(... I hope the encore won't get too much cut, and certainly not Jake's part...
Thanks for the posts and updates WDW!!!

I have some concerns about this one but will be the first to admit I don't know enough about it to know if my concerns make any sense so would love some input here! I know about the Bourne movies but I thought of two things when I read about this last night: 1) Typically movies that are this far into a "series" (i.e. the 3rd or 4th one in the series) aren't always embraced too well by the fans. Of course I am not talking about Harry Potter or The Dark Knight here - I think those are huge exceptions. And 2) Movie fans also tend to be so loyal to their "original" character/actor (i.e. Matt Damon) that no matter who is the new lead or how good they are the fans sometimes rebel. Which means a not so good box office.

Again, I don't really know too much about this particular series or the people that love it but I'm going by my gut feeling about a movie like this in general. So anyone who knows more about this Bourne series please shed some light if you can!

In the meantime any news on a new project for Jake is GREAT! And I do think he'd do great in a role like this (I just don't want him bashed by crazy Bourne fans before he even gets started)!!

Waiting waiting waiting...

:-)

BBMISwear, you make a very valid point. I admit that the same thoughts/fears/doubts crossed my mind when I first read of Jake's potential involvement with the latest installment in this particular franchise. If it won't have Matt Damon as Jason Bourne in any capacity, then why keep "Bourne" in the title? It sounds like a lame attempt to keep cashing in on a successful franchise that might best be left alone. I enjoyed all the Bourne movies immensely, and I would be hesitant to see another one without Matt Damon (unless it stars Jake).

On the other hand, I can easily envision Jake stepping into this kind of action/adventure role and being just as successful, if not more so, as Matt Damon as Bourne. It may be the perfect role/character but the wrong franchise.

I honestly don't think Maguire and Schwartzmann are right for this role. Of the others, I think Garrett Hedlund has the talent for it (he disappears into his characters), and bears *some* physical resemblance to Matt Damon.
If Jake wants to do it, and gets picked for it, he'll do a great job, though he doesn't resemble Damon all that much. Still, I think Damon did such a great job in the earlier movies that they should not make another one without him. Jake *deserves* a franchise of his own that someone else hasn't already started.

Did you hear about the English actor (Cavill, I think) who has been tapped for a new Superman movie. I would like to see a total ban on new Superman movies for at least 20 years.....

Hi!
Thank you WDW for that exciting news, about Jake wanting to work again. I know The Bourne Identity, I liked the movie. BBMISwear, I think you maybe right regarding problem with fans wanting Matt Damon. By the way, why he won't play again. If he would like to and they don't want him - that's would be tough for actor to replace him. If he didn't want it - that is slightly better.
I think, that Jake bought some new fans by playing Dastan, now he will get some more by playing Colter. If Source Code will be a success, then The Bourne nr 4 - the next action movie could have green light from the audience.
It's still a possibility that Jake won't pass audition. But because he wants to be a part of it, I wish him to conquer his rivals, I even didn't hear about, except for Tobey Maguire, which I don't see in it. But he surprised me once already in Brothers, so...
I hope we get the news about it soon. They start to make movie at fall - it's quite long time. But maybe not long enough to make another movie in between. So it looks like Jake has really nothing else to star.

What great input here - thanks to everyone who gave me some opinions. Based on the little I read on line having a fourth Bourne movie is not really necessary in general (this being said by people who really liked the series of movies that are already out)! That is the part that concerns me - even if the part was great and Jake was great in it the movie may not be well-liked even before it gets off the ground. Hmmmm...we'll see what happens...only rumors right now anyway. But I do agree Jake would play a role like this well (maybe someone will come up with something similar for him but not a part of an already established franchise).

Ooooh...presenting with Amy Adams...I like that! (thanks mk)!

Well, back to boring paperwork that needs to get done no matter how un-exciting it is to do it (hence the many on line breaks)!!

:-)

Me again (avoiding the task at hand obviously)! If the info floating around on line is correct then Jake and Amy are presenting 2 short film awards which is good news (as in more time on stage)! "Jake Gyllenhaal (Prince Of Persia, Love And Other Drugs) and Amy Adams (The Fighter) present the Best Documentary Short Subject and Best Live Action Short Film Oscars."

It's the little things that make us happy, huh?! :-)

Two times with Jake at Oscars - it's great!
I hope he will be shown often, because of Anne Hathaway hosting. Maybe they will show his reaction to her singing or jokes.
James Franco, Anne Hathaway Oscar promo

About The Bourn Legacy -
"Variety notes that "no front-runner has emerged." Meanwhile, the character that will be portrayed by the chosen actor is a new assassin with a background similar to Matt Damon's Bourne's. The site additionally says production is scheduled to begin this spring, but Deadline mentions fall start date for the fourth "Bourne" film. ... the upcoming project will not be "a reboot or a recast or a prequel." He explained, "Jason Bourne will not be in this film, but he's very much alive. What happened in the first three films is the trigger for what happens. I'm building a legend and an environment and a wider conspiracy." - the source - http://www.aceshowbiz.com/news/view/00038694.html

By the way - it's funny, how often he crosses his paths with Tobey's.

I'm back! Wonderful post, WDW, I'd definitely LOVE to see Jake in another action movie (and maybe catch a glimpse of his gorgeous pecs!)

Morning everyone! Good to see you all. Had quite a night last night with many friends I've not seen for years.

I've particularly enjoyed the discussion of the Bourne movies and what we think of Jake doing such a project. I'm no spy movie fan (and so I've only seen the first Bourne movie) but I have confidence that this new film would be done well, whoever plays the lead. I have mixed feelings about Jake starring in a franchise but what I do like about it is the idea of regular releases!

Have a lovely Saturday everyone!

I'm optimistic. Jake wouldn't actually be playing Jason Bourne, that part still "belongs" to Matt Damon.

I remember all the criticism Daniel Craig got when he was announced as the new James Bond, and that ended up working out very well.

I think the potential for Matt Damon, and whoever is chosen as the "Legacy" star, to team up at some point, is something to look forward to as well.

Hedlund resembles Damon too much. He is also not very well known at all. Tobey is entirely too old for this.
