[Updated] Jake Gyllenhaal on the cover of Vanity Fair (along with a lot of other people)

This Emergency Post is brought to you courtesy of the Hollywood edition of Vanity Fair which has just revealed a peep of its long extended folding cover. I'm delighted to say that right (or even centre) on the front is Jake Gyllenhaal plus three other really quite gorgeous and talented thespians: Ryan Reynolds, Anne Hathaway and James Franco. The words 'lucky Anne' spring to mind. You can see video of the shoot here.

As for who everyone else is - try and see how many you can identify. It does embiggen on being clicked. This clean version below, from the NYP, gives you an even better look and embiggens even bigger.

If you did a poor job, like me, here's the register (from left to right): Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, James Franco, Jennifer Lawrence, Anthony Mackie, Olivia Wilde (you may have a harder job spotting her dress), Jesse Eisenberg, Mila Kunis, Robert Duvall, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Andrew Garfield, Rashida Jones, Garrett Hedlund, and Noomi Rapace.

I love Robert Duvall but slightly mystified at his inclusion amongst this bunch.

Update!

Here is a picture of Jake and Anne, along with a description of the shoot: 'As for the foursome on our front panel, Anne Hathaway (the next Catwoman) was fresh from Oslo, where she had co-hosted the Nobel Peace Prize concert. She was thrilled to see her Love and Other Drugs co-star Jake Gyllenhaal and her Oscar co-host James Franco, who had just completed his finals in a graduate program at the Rhode Island School of Design (he has also taken graduate courses at N.Y.U., Columbia, and Yale). Once Ryan Reynolds arrived from Atlanta, where he was filming The Change-Up, and slipped his superhero physique (his Green Lantern comes out this summer) into a Giorgio Armani tuxedo, the stars were all in place for another classic V.F. tableau.'

And it's hard to go wrong with a picture of Jake and Ryan Reynolds together!

So, to get down to the nitty gritty of what really matters, is this shoot the reason for Jake's shave?

That was the before, here's the after:

Robert Duvall as Fritz the grizzled bartender! Cool.

The whole shoot reminds me of the bar at the Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Especially the way Fritz is litz.

Struggled to recognise Noomi Rapace. I think she looks better as Lisbeth Salander!

WOW! What a photo! Thank you for the emergency post to share it! I love Anne Hathaway but how can we not be envious of her?! What a lucky lady she is!!

*waits patiently for Vanity Fair to hit local new stands*

*waves to Rob who I think I will be drinking with when I finally get my butt back to the other side of the pond*

:-)

Hey Rob! He is a bit like the congenial, all-listening bartender. Very old Hollywood. Smashing! I have yet to see Noomi in a role. There are some interesting dresses... Looking forward to hearing what you think of Tangled!

Hey there BBMISwear :-) It certainly felt like an emergency! Going out drinking with Rob is a requisite ingredient for a trip over here :D

Updated the post!

What a photo, indeed! Thanks, WDW.
Isn't Jake gorgeous (as usual) in his tux?

Rob, you hit the nail on the head - I was trying to think of what scene from what movie this photo reminded me of, and The Shining is it! All those tuxedos and classic "old Hollywood" glamour combined with Rashida Jones bottle feeding a baby - what is that, a lion? - is just a tad surreal. That is certainly one magazine cover worthy of framing!

Hi!
Great emergency post. Great picture!
What a company. I'm so happy Jake is between them and is described in such nice words. - "Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal, two of the most versatile, likeable (and, yes, good-looking) leading men in Hollywood." - yes, yes, yes!
The pictures with Anne and Ryan are so nice. I'm glad Jake has still a reason and a chance to meet with Anne. They may strengthen up their friendship.
Thank you WDW.

In this HQ Monica's version we may see how good looking are Jake and Anne. His pose, and look on his face is so charming and masculine.

Hi there Susan! Supremely glamorous - I love to see our Jake the Movie Star. Makes me proud. And I'm so glad he graces the very front of the cover with those three other stars :)

It's very classy, Monica. I love to see Jake and James together! I've added that version too the post :)

Hi Mermon! Posting at the same time :D It's a stunner. The whole thing is so classy!

Updated the post with video! Thanks to BBMISwear for sending me the link :)

Just saw the video! Fantastic! Thanks so much, WDW, for sharing all these wonderful photos, videos, and info.

I just remembered that Robert Duvall was Boo Radley in To Kill A Mockingbird. What a small world Hollywood must be!

Great video! Jake really looks classy, he could play in classy movies like The Great Gatsby?

when were these shots taken? It had to be the last time he cut his hair this short. I noticed he still had some facial scruff when he was talking to Ryan, so maybe he shaved just prior to the shoot?

When does this hit the stands?

The article about the shoot says it was done in December and Anne was just back from the Nobel Peace Prize Concert which was December 11th so Jake "cleaned up" for this and then went all "hairy" again right after apparently! Most of the pictures of him in NYC were "hairy" but there was a "growing in" phase in late December so I'm guessing this shoot was done between December 13th and 24th (not that I think about this stuff much or anything - ha ha)!!

So true. So very, very true. Hey BBMISwear! First round's on me!

Great comments everyone! I can't chat much right now as just waiting to go to the pictures with Mr WDW :) A rare treat indeed.

Waves to Susan, Mermon and Sweetpea! Fab video :)

Have to say that that, BBMISwear, is a CLASSIC comment! So not the reason for the latest shave then so must be for a role :-) I hope.

Goodie Rob! Second round on me :)

Ooh I like the photo with Anne. Jake has that uber-sexy tuxedo with the bowtie undone look that just makes me all..... undone. Yum

The people of Hollywood haven't imagination. They make copy of mode fashion of anothe time.

Oooooooh! Hubbahubbahubbaaaaa. Yumyumyummmm.

See, this is what happens every time I see Jake in a tux. Intellect disappears immediately. ;)

The video got removed indeed, but I'm having plenty of fun with that stunning cover.
Anne Hathaway has far too much male handsomeness surrounding her. I suggest we help her carry that testosterone load, ladies. ;-)

SQUEEE!
That cover is so wonderful. And I endorse all the said about Jake and Anne. They could not be more beautiful.
Now I vote for Jake in a Gangster's movie role. Or other film in noir genre.
Thanks WDW.

LadyX, I will gladly join you in bearing that burden - without complaint!

Eureka, I agree with the film noir idea. Jake would make an awesome classic film noir detective OR a gangster. Either way, he would be absolutely delicious!

Hi WDW, time for a long one:
I just feel completely bug eyed weird about things today I think. What a glorious cover! What an amazing surprise that Jake should be on the cover now, this year, when if you ask me he's been having a baaaad run of luck. I wonder if he is embarrassed to be there and then have the oscar hosts and nominees listed etc and him not be on it!? Someone must have thought he'd be more in than he has managed this year (in Hollywood anyway, he's doing fine in my local cinema!). And how have they managed to make him look less handsome? I love the shanghai look of the piece, but what do you do when faced with someone as gorgeous as Jake to put on your cover, why you cover him with glue and give him weird hair. I did not actually think Jake was 'happy' at the Golden Globes and has not been 'happy' much recently at all. This sums up 2010 for Jaking for me - a bad hair year.
PS I still love the cover, though I've never seen a single film most of them are in except Jake, and not through trying to avoid them either .

Hello! Back home after a lovely evening out. I se the vido hs been taken down, but you can see it here at Vanity Fair

Hey Rubes! I love this look. It should be compulsory on Jake.

Hi Lady Ekster! Anne surrounded by these three men, three of my favourites. What a fun day that must have been :)

Hi Susan, Eureka and Sweetpea :)

Hi TD! Jake isn't the only one on that front cover not to get an Oscar mention - Ryan and Anne haven't either, so it's just James of the four! Looking at the big picture it looks like they've all been quite heavily airbrushed but it's just so good to see Jake in this company.

I've had a lovely evening! I hope everyone else has too :)

Wow - a round from Rob and a round from WDW and I know Ruby promised me at least a couple some time ago so as soon as I get to England we're off to the pub?!?! My type of people!!

I'm glad you liked my comment, WDW, it must be because it shows how much I got to think about these important issues today while being snowed in (i.e. when was Jake clean shaven enough in December to do this photo shoot?) LOL!!

Cheers!

:-)

I had a lovely evening seeing LAOD at last in the cinema theatre. Jake on the silver screen is just wonderful. This was my fourth time and I liked it even more. At last I understood everything and it made a big difference. First three times I've watched only in English, no subtitles. It such a nice movie to watch. The screening was only for ladies. It was pre-premiere and the cinema was full. It was so good hearing women laughing and enjoying the movie.

Hi BBMISwear :-) Let's just hope we see you soon!

That's great Mermon! I'm so glad you enjoyed even more - and that the film is doing so well :)

Have a good day everyone!

I like it that they included Garrett Hedlund in the picture (didn't recognize, him, though, as his hair is almost blond, not black as in the picture), but he isn't an Oscar contender. He does sing a song that *is* nominated for an Oscar, but his rendition doesn't get included in the "Country Strong" Soundtrack album.

Robert Duvall is by far the oldest celeb pictured. Why him, but no others of his generation?

I ask too many questions....
