Brokeback Mountain heading for London's V&A

Back in 2009, the iconic shirts from Brokeback Mountain were displayed at the Autry Museum in LA, provoking quite a reaction amongst those who visited the exhibit. This Autumn, London's wonderful Victoria and Albert, a museum well known for its exhibitions of clothing, costume and fabrics, hosts Hollywood Costume. There has been mention of Brokeback Mountain in association with the exhibition, but a source, who prefers to remain nameless, has just informed me that Jack Twist's and Ennis Del Mar's costumes from the mountain arrived at the V&A over Christmas.

They are currently in conservation at the V&A and being treated with the utmost care. What is especially moving is that the outfits are standing together in the studio, touching, and making everyone who sees them or works with them stop and take a moment (I've seen a photo and so I can see why). I'm told that Jack's jeans have dark streaks on them. The gloves and boots arrived separately and are also being treated with great care.

The exhibition runs from 20 October 2012 until 27 January 2013 (a year from today). You can see some of the other costumes on exhibit here. This might well be an event we could get a WDW group outing together for! It's been a while. I think it could be time to hold another.

Many thanks to a good friend for the news :)

My review of The Descendants is now on MovieBrit.

Oh my gosh, clothes that Jake and Heath wore, and in that wonderful film too. Brokeback Mountain is one of my favourite films, so touching. I'm definitely going!

Hi Aileen! Me too :) It's the same outfits from the cosy embrace, or at least versions of them that were used during the filming.

Great to hear about the costumes. On a different note, does anyone think Taylor's new album will be about Jake? I hope not because I don't to hear gossipy stuff about him.

I'm ready for an outing. ;o)
So many nice and famous costumes and company would be worth the visit.
Is Jake already in our continent?

Oooh...how wonderful! I wish I could be there. I will say that the feeling you get when you see items such as these can be quite overwhelming. I saw *the* wonderful shirts (Jack's inside of Ennis' - on the hanger - exactly how they were in the film) during one of my stints in L.A. and it was so moving. I am so thankful that the auction winner of those shirts is kind enough to share them in a museum and not just keep them locked up in his house. And now these people will display more of Jack and Ennis' clothes for people to see - lovely. I encourage anyone that can go to do so! I would so love to be a part of an WDW outing. :-(

Excellent, Eureka! I don't think Jake's here yet but can't be long.

I wish, wish you could be there BBMISwear :-( To see the costumes and chat and drink wine.... sigh... It would be such a moving experience to see them.

Wow, so many famous costumes and among them - two the most famous shirts in the world. Isn't it amazing? Would be so good to get together, visit and look at them with our own eyes :))
It's touching how they take care of those shirts.
I wonder why they arrived so early. I don't think they need 9 months treatment. Maybe they have to get use to English weather, to avoid any bad influence, like some precious paintings :)
Lucky you, who live close enough to go there. We count on some pictures!
Thanks Kate for sharing that secret information.

I think, Jake is in NYC now, judging from tweets, he's back to shirtless, sweaty SoulCycling. :))

Hi Mermon! It's not just shirts, it's the whole outfits. I suppose it's such a big exhibition it'll take a long time to get all the costumes over. Be wonderful to see. Yep, back to NYC so the end of new pics for a while... sigh :)

It always takes a long long time to arrange for a major exhibition like this one. It takes ages to get permission from the private owners and museums to get the items, to solve transport and insurance problems etc. I'm sure it will be a great exhibition, can't wait to see the BBM outfits:)

It really does, 21:04, and you only have to glance at the newspaper stories to see there are a lot of costumes. Be so wonderful organising something like this - like a festival of costume :)

Wasn't there another costume exhibit that also featured clothes from movies of Jake I seem to remember the PoP costume in an exhibit, and also the BBM clothes as part of another exhibit.

Winterbird, don't promise not to cry because my guess is if you think you might then once you're standing in front of them you will! (This is based on my experience with the shirts at the Autry in L.A.). What was nice was I was with a very dear Brokie friend and we just stood there together and barely spoke. And then we sat in that section of the museum for a while and just took it all in - so quietly - it was quite moving. Yep, you might cry alright! *not ruling out visit to London in October*

Anon 14:30 - we were posting at the same time when I was mentioning "the shirts" (the two shirts, Jack's inside of Ennis', on the hanger like in Ennis' trailer closet). These are on display at The Autry National Center in L.A. which is a museum about the American West. I do remember WDW posting PoP costume related info here but I'm not sure where that was...I'm sure she'll remind us!

I wish I could have seen them when they were on this side of the Atlantic. Are you going to see them in person WDW?

it was heartwarming how they were touching (I know this sounds so dumb about being affect by shirts) but I think they mean even more now with Heath gone :(

Hello everyone! Good to see all of you :)

Excellent Winterbird!

Indeed 22:12!

23:07, hello 'me'! Do email if you like, I don't use PMs :)

There was 22:30 - here's the link

That would be so wonderful, BBMISwear :-) I'll keep my fingers crossed and everything else. I would have loved to have gone to the Autry with you.

Hi Sweetpea :) I will, I couldn't have the costumes in London and not go and see them. They do mean more.

I hope you're all having a good Saturday!

I'm having a great Saturday after having (finally) seen Love and Other Drugs. Jake is such a great actor, I wish him many interesting projects to work on in the future (hopefully in the near future:) )

So glad you enjoyed it 18:35!

Count me in, too!
I'd love to get together with as much Gyllengirls as possible, especially for such a beautiful exposition... I love the idea already. :)

Have a nice Sunday everyone. I'm mentally preparing myself for the horrible snow and ice weather that's coming our way, brr...

I was just reading the jury section of the Berlinale, which you can find here:
http://www.berlinale.de/en/das_festival/preise_und_juries/preise_internationale_jury/index.html
and noticed that Jake has a beard in his photo. Is this his way of hinting that he will go for the bearded look at the festival?
What do you guys think?

I think we'll find out what look Jake will have when we see photos of him at the festival. That photo looks like stock, something his agent might have sent to them. I don't know how recent that photo is

RT @eye4style:Um, yeah, that's Jake Gyllenhaal leaving brunch at The Fat Radish, with someone who clearly resembles a model. .... maybe girlfriend? ;)

Anonymous said...

If he does have a girlfriend I hope it's that girl from the Descendants premiere, she was cute:). I hope it's not Izabel Goulart

Wet Dark and Wild said...

That would be fab, Lady Ekster!

Thanks for the link 16:57, but that picture is from, I think, the end of 2010, start of 2011, so I doubt it's sending any hints for what he'll look like now.

Hi Sweetpea :) Not very... I'm looking forward to seeing him in Berlin, I do hope we get pics of him at screenings etc.

A gentle reminder to Anons that this isn't the place for gossip. I would also encourage everyone to post with a name, however made up.

Hope everyone's having a good Sunday!
