Catch up: Jake Gyllenhaal turns Pittsburgh into NYC and Maggie is an Honourable Woman

Good to see you all! I'm back from one lovely long holiday in Cornwall (having returned looking like a radioactive lobster) and now getting ready for another jaunt to Rome. Jake Gyllenhaal is working through his summer, with shooting continuing on Pittsburgh into next month at least.

This report from Pittsburgh shows how the city is being transformed into NYC, complete with billboard posters of Jake's - or Hope's - next fight:

'The former Saks building is being turned into Madison Square Garden for the movie featuring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rachel McAdams, 50 Cent, and Lupita Nyong’o. A banner advertising “the light heavyweight championship” boxing match between Gyllenhaal’s Billy Hope and another boxer hung outside the building. New York City taxi cabs and police cars were also seen on Smithfield Street. The film is shooting in Pittsburgh through early August. The film previously shot in Indiana, Pa., in June.'

If you want to be an extra, there may still be time!

Maggie is making a bit of a splash on British small screens at the moment with the well-received The Honourable Woman. To mark its screening, Maggie was interviewed in the Guardian with this, less that controversial, comment about Jake: 'Understandably, Gyllenhaal discourages speculation about sibling rivalry. "He's one of my best friends and I really adore him,"' Incidentally, Maggie's English accent in The Honourable Woman is impeccable.

Thanks to IHJ for the new stills from Enemy. I love these posters.

I hope you're all having a good summer/winter!

Hello everyone! Sorry for the long silence - too much holiday-making. Fortunately, Jake's been rather busy himself. Hope you're all well!

Yep, the latest ENEMY-posters presented/displayed on IHJ are to die for. Still haven't decided yet if the film is to die for as well. The very last seconds still shock me whenever I think about them.

Hi WDW! I haven't been here for a while. It's great to see that the blog is still going on :) Hope you are having a wonderful summer.

Tonight I saw "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes," with one Jake link: Toby Kebbell, who was with Jake in "Prince of Persia."

Does anyone know when the Everest movie will be finished?

@paulh
Hasn't the shooting of EVEREST been completed yet??
Isn't Jake already busy doing his NEXT film, SOUTHPAW, at the moment?? That's why he is residing in Pittsburgh these days, isn't he??
Oh dear, what an industrious, hard-working actor our hero is, eh?? Can't wait to watch it ALL!!!
;-)

Hi Kate. Thanks for the update. I especially enjoyed reading the article about Maggie in The Honourable Woman. I am looking forward to watching it starting on Thursday, July 31 on The Sundance Channel in the U.S. (where it will lose that pesky unnecessary "U" and be presented as The Honorable Woman, a title with which my spellchecker has no quibble.)
Has there been anything circulating about Jake's Nightcrawler? I'd love to know when to expect its release.
I mentioned Southpaw to my hubby who immediately related it to Rocky (the Italian Stallion boxing movie from 1976). Seems Rocky Balboa was also left-handed. Now I have this nagging idea in the back of my mind that Southpaw will be endlessly and nauseatingly compared to Rocky in every article and interview. If favorable comparisons to Rocky get butts in the theater seats, I guess I can live with it. Of course, Southpaw will be miles better than Rocky ever was. It has to be - it stars Jake.

Hi Antje :)

Great to see you, Zodiac! It's been so long. Hope everything is good with you x

Hi Paul! I love Toby! Yes, Everest is finished now - at least the acting bit of it.

Hi Susan! I suspect that comparisons with Rocky are going to be an inevitable part of Southpaw. But, as you say, this might put bums on seats.

Hi Sonja! I saw this - I'll put the link up :)

I hope you had a good weekend - I am loving our proper summer :)

Tonight I saw the new "Planes" movie about firefighting. The only Jake link was John Michael Higgins, who was in "Jiminy Glick in Lalawood" with Jake.

"Has there been anything circulating about Jake's Nightcrawler?"

Its set for a 10/17 release date in the US/North America and 11/17 in the UK. But all this can change, its also slated for TIFF just announced earlier this morning.

Also the Craigslist video is at over 200 hundred thousand hits and Louis Bloom has nearly 100 members that joined his channel on YouTube. Not bad considering the video sort of just appeared as part of the marketing. Still worried about the marketing though, Jake's film in the marketing area have been a let down.

Tonight I saw Zack Braff's movie "Wish I was Here," which had one Jake link: Josh Gad, who was in "Love and other drugs" with Jake.

Does anyone know how I can buy a region 2 Enemy DVD? None on Amazon, none on eBay. I really want to watch Enemy as it's my sort of film. Watched Prisoners last night - it was excellent! Much better than I thought it would be. :-)

Hi Amanda,

'Enemy' hasn't been released on a region 2 DVD yet. You'll have to wait until October, I'm afraid. That's when it'll be released on DVD in Europe.

In Germany it'll even be released as a 3-disc Collector's Edition and a Steelbook Edition!

I do feel like I should warn you though. 'Enemy' is strange... very strange. It's nothing like 'Prisoners' at all - it's even better! :-)
I consider it to be Jake's best performance since BBM.

Hi Sonja

Thanks for letting me know, at least October isn't too far away (summer will soon be over). I liked Prisoners, but didn't think it was Jake's best. Hugh was brill of course. Apart from being artistically filmed, I thought Prisoner's wasn't that different from other thrillers' I was very much reminded of Al Pacino's cops when I saw Jake's acting as Loki :-) (I love Al Pacino too!). So I'm very much looking forward to Enemy - I like strange :-)

That's funny! On the BBM forum, people are also compairing Jake to a young Al Pacino these days - so you're not alone :-)

I've never heard Jake mention Al Pacino in interviews, but I wonder if he has been influenced by his acting :-)

Tonight I saw the most highly-rated movie in decades: "Boyhood."
Sadly, there seem to be no Jake links. The closest is Ethan Hawke, who costars with Patricia Arquette as the parents of the title character. Hawke was in "Waterland" [1992], which was directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal and had Maggy Gyllenhaal in the cast. For all I know, Jake spent lot of time on the set, but he didn't get any production credits. Sorry!
