Jake Gyllenhaal and Nic Cage on SNL

Last night Jake Gyllenhaal made a surprise appearance on SNL. Even better, the skit also featured my second favourite actor Nic Cage.

Earlier in the evening, Jake went to see the musical The Book of Mormon at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre on Broadway.

This is an emergency post - there could very well be more later on.

Thanks to IHJ for the picture.

Ed Zwick on his leads Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway: 'you might know them but you really don’t'

As Love and Other Drugs gets ever closer, we have the news that Anne Hathaway will be hosting SNL on 20 November. And, rather appropriately, the musical guest will be Florence and the Machine, one of the bands that Jake Gyllenhaal has mentioned as one he's interested in. I think it's about time that Jake hosted another show, or at least had those talents of his made use of somewhere on the box. Thanks to Susan for this very enjoyable reminder of a show almost four years ago. It's hard to believe that Jake's SNL was in January 2007!

One has to wonder if Jake will make some kind of appearance during the show. Only four days before the release of the film, there must be a chance of that.

This week the press screenings for Love and Other Drugs have continued and, on the whole, the reactions have been very favourable for the 'sexiest' movie of the year. In this review, we hear 'Love and Other Drugs started off really really funny, got really really serious, and then ended as a typical romantic comedy. It’s a quirky love story surrounded by drugs…pharmaceutical drugs that is. You follow Jamie Randall (Jake Gyllenhaal), a drug rep for Pfizer whose job it is to get doctors to prescribe their drugs to patients. The beginning of the movie is hilarious and will have you rolling in the aisles. Jamie is trained by Bruce Jackson (Oliver Platt) who tells him, “you and your swinging dick will be my winning ticket.” He’s a playboy hotshot ready to make money no matter what it takes!'

'Then he meets her. Jamie meets Maggie Murdock who is beautifully played by Anne Hathaway. At first, they’re a match made in heaven. Jamie is a dick who just wants sex and Maggie doesn’t want to be in a relationship and get attached…she just wants sex too. So they have sex! And lots of it. But this is a romantic comedy so you know they fall in love and all that stuff happens but it’s still in a humorous way…until Maggie’s disease becomes more evident. She has early stage Parkinson’s and the movie takes a serious look at what the disease does to a person and everyone around them. It hits you like a ton of bricks and the movie almost slows to a halt but does deliver its message.'

I love this description - that moment when everything appears to be going along so well as it should, even better than it should, and then suddenly the floor is pulled from under one's feet and you freefall, with that feeling in the stomach that rips you in half. I'm so excited to see Love and Other Drugs.

WDW gets springcleaned and Jake Gyllenhaal is Teen (and Post-Teen) Choice

As you can probably tell, WDW has been spending the day at the spa - time to get the hair cut and recharge those batteries after what what will go down as an extraordinary month in the annals of Gyllendom. WDW also began over three years ago when Blogger was not what it is now and, while some things continue to be a pain in the unmentionables, some things have improved - and that includes the chance to spruce the place up a little. The white writing strained some readers' eyes and so I thought I'd give them a rest after all this time. This is very definitely a work in progress - for instance the chap who'll help me with a new banner is on his hols and there are other things I will be doing over the coming days. I also want to hear what you think so spit it out!

Another change is that, after some discussion and a lot of thought and encouragement, I've added a chance to donate button. WDW is a product of love for a remarkable man and his smashing films and it's been propelled along over the years through the support of a commmunity of readers, many of whom have become good friends. But I'm not gonna deny that it takes every minute of my spare time and quite a few resources to keep up with Jake and, as I don't want to litter the place with ugly ads, this was an option. And it can be ignored! But should you chose not to ignore it, it does help and is much appreciated.

Talking of Jake Gyllenhaal - as is my wont - Jake has been nominated for two Teen Choice Awards - for two rather contrasting roles. Bearing in mind, that the voters are supposed to be 12-19, Jake may not be in for much of a chance with his portrayal of Tommy Cahill in the very adult Brothers, he must be a good bet for his swashbuckling and completely swoonworthy and hot portrayal of that Persian Prince.

Here are the categories that are to do with Jake, Gemma Arteron, Prince of Persia and Brothers. But you can see the full, rather curious list of nominees here. So many categories... does this programme (aired n Monday 9 August) last a week? You can vote here - if you're a teenager of course. I can't imagine that anyone would want to vote for Rob or Johnny. Harry who?

Can we have a Post-Teen Choice Awards?

And finally...

Will Forte, whom you might remember as one of the very appreciative cowboys on Jake's triumphant appearance on SNL back in January 2007. Will has been reminiscing to Elle and, in addition to snogging James Franco, Will also recalls which 'male SNL host has made the female cast members most flustered?' 'WF: Jake Gyllenhaal. Not only did every woman have a crush on him, it seemed like there were a lot of dude crushes, too.' No doubt of that at all.

Many thanks to IHJ for these gorgeous pics of Jake from London which, judging by the hanky, were taken the same day as the premiere on 9 May.
