Jake Gyllenhaal's 20th anniversary, LAPD End of Watch research and something cool

It's time to crack open the bubbly, serve up the trifle and put on a party hat - today (7 June) marks a very special day in the GyllenCalendar. Twenty years ago today, City Slickers was released in the US and a whole new career was launched. Jake Gyllenhaal was born! Well, sort of... To celebrate the fact, a blu ray of the film has been released, which for reasons that defy human knowledge, doesn't have Jake on the cover. Nevertheless, this could be one for the collection.

To make up for the lack of Jake in that picture, this video is always worth a relook. Except for the shoulder bit... I hate the shoulder bit...

Here's a clip.

Who'd have thought it? Twenty years and so many, many more to go.

LAPD Medal of Honor Ceremony

On 26 May, the LAPD Medal of Honor ceremony took place during which ten officers were awarded the highest honour for bravery given by the LAPD. Jake and others from the End of Watch crew attended the ceremony, no doubt receiving immense inspiration as the film takes shape. '“In a town where our studios turn out fictionalized accounts of hero cops, it’s amazing to see in the very same town that real guys exist,” Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti, 13th District, said.' The photo is from the LA Police Foundation.

Winter wonderland

We have yet to see the Bear Grylls and Jake Iceland Survivor experience, but there are some details in this fun piece of the hotel (Hotel Ranga) in which they stayed. Apparently, there is a stuffed polar bear in the lobby. I'm confused by the penguins and intimidated by the bearskins on the wall. Quite an experience and I must say that my ambition to go there is large. The photo below is from a previous suitably cool experience by Jake for Earth Day back in 2005.

Happy birthday to Jake Gyllenhaal - the big 3-0

Happy birthday Jake Gyllenhaal and congratulations on the big 3-0! Whether you're diving with walruses and killer whales in the deep Arctic north, or popping out for lunch in Washington DC [or NYC depending on which Prune this was...], 30 is a great age to celebrate - especially when it coincides with a movie out and a Golden Globe nomination. Many thanks to BBMISwear for this page from the new issue of EW, which gives us a look at another shot from their notorious and celebratory shoot of Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway sans all unnecessary clobber.

Roger Ebert took the opportunity of Jake's birthday today to repost his review of Brokeback Mountain.

For a full photographic tour through over 15 years of life in front of the camera, do take a look at PoPSugar as they mark a key date in the GyllenCalendar.

There are more pictures from Love and Other Drugs, reminding us that the release gets ever nearer to those of us in Europe and elsewhere.

There is also a video from Korea, in which Anne sounds relieved to be immune to the sexiness and gorgeousness of her co-star whom, as he hits the big 3-0, is more stunning than ever.

And finally...

Today has been rather extraordinary in Oxford - the worst snow for 30 years and, because I had preview tickets for the King's Speech, I had a ten mile round walking trip to do. I thought I'd post a picture or two.

Many many happy returns of the day to Jake! 30 is a wonderful age and you'll look back on it as it key turning point in a rich and fulfilled life. Off now to write about Love and Other Drugs as I do believe my embargo is about to lift...

Jake Gyllenhaal back at the Medical Center, 5 January, and the GyllenGuide to Snowman Construction

The holidays are definitely over - Jake Gyllenhaal is back at work at the Beverly Hills Medical Center, no doubt catching up on the backlog. That's one explanation, the other less plausible one is that Jake is getting ready for the start of Source Code. It also gives him the opportunity to let us have a look at a new (Christmas?) set of clothes. The pictures were taken yesterday, 5 January, the same day that Jake put in some hugging practice at another familiar haunt, Urth Cafe on S. Beverly Drive. This is where I once missed Jake by a couple of hours, thereby not getting a hug. Many thanks to IHJ for the pics!

The GyllenGuide to Snowman Construction

Southern England isn't particularly good with weather, it's why we talk about it so much. Today, the news assured us that we had experienced the worst snow since the Ice Age. Despite these end of the world conditions, people went out in their hundreds to litter the place with snowmen, even though they have yet to see the Jake Gyllenhaal Build a Snowman Masterclass, being brought to British screens by Jim Sheridan on 22 January. The photos without Jake were taken in my village, the photos with Jake weren't.
