Everyone has a Brokeback - sometimes we get to go there, sometimes we don't

I really want to thank everyone for their very moving comments yesterday as we sat around the figurative campfire and reminisced about what our first viewing of Brokeback Mountain was like. I have no doubt that we'll do that again here as I think most of us will always have time and heart for Brokeback. So when a friend told me all about this interview, I couldn't pass it by, and I hope that people will humour me for having two Brokeback posts in a row! I for one am still in the mood for some daydreaming about Jack and Ennis and this just does the trick - yet again we are treated to Jake expressing with such earnestness what this film and role meant to him in terms of love.

The interview was recorded during the Venice Film Festival in 2005 when, of course, Jake was just 24, reminding us of how young Jake was when he took on the role of Jack Twist. It also makes me appreciate the extent to which Jake must have thought about love in his own life and in that of Jack as he sat on that lonely mountain during gaps between takes, making him sound wise beyond those young years.

"Everybody says love has no bounds," Jake says, "and we all subscribe to that idea... It's become such a cliche that we don't really believe that, because when it comes really down to love has no bounds, we don't buy it... I stay within a form of 'Is that OK to do? Is that OK to do?' And this movie was like it has no bounds... These aren't like two gay guys. These are two people who fall in love and from the environment that they're in, which is incredibly lonely, they find each other."

Ang Lee supports this incredibly personal and private impact that his film has had on both its actors and its viewers and maybe himself; "Everyone has a Brokeback - sometimes we get to go there, sometimes we don't." And he speaks with pride of his young cast, aware that he captured something so special on camera: "They're innocent, they're in the pivotal point in their career. They're becoming characters that carry the movie... They're smart, talented and the look's just right. They still have that innocence and they listen! Sometimes it's like the best times in their lives and I just want to capture them." And how he did.

Much thanks and love to my friend for sharing the interview with me. Includes pictures from IHJ.

Hey WDW...thanks so much for posting about Brokeback again...and for the link to that wonderful interview. When I hear Jake speak like that about the love that was in Brokeback, I know he is wise beyond his years. He is so intuitive and tuned into those kinds of feelings..really seems like he gives a lot of thought to..and considers other people's feelings without question...what a beautiful soul he has...thanks again...Michele

You know I think I'm just about ready to see this cowboy film. Is it like a spaghetti western? I like those!

Thank you so much for the video WDW! I love to hear Jake talking about Jack and Brokeback, probably because Jack was my first love out of all Jake's characters so far. And although I hope and believe he'll play plenty more wonderful different characters for years to come, Jack Twist will always have a special place in my heart, ans so will Jake for playing him so beautifully.
It's clear Jake did a lot of deep thinking and soul searching during those lonely hours, as you say, and as well as coming htrough in his performance, it seems he took what he'd learned with him after filming ended, going by what he says here. He's so right, what's central to Brokeback Mountain is that these were two people who fell in love, gender and sexuality didn't come into it,it happened because love truly does know no bounds, it happens just because, to all of us, gay straight, male female, whatever. If only more people could see that, the world would be such a better place.
The clip at the beginning of the video,is imo an amazing piece of acting from Jake, the sadness in his eyes is so real and the way he raises hs eyebrow hopefully after he says to Ennis "I might be back...", my heart just breaks for him every single time I watch that scene :(
God I feel like crying now, Brokeback does that to me a lot.
So before I end up flooding the keyboard, can I just cheer myself up by saying Jake looks good enough to eat in the interview you posted, even if he was reading the phone book I'd be mesmerised by him!

Ahhh Major Grooves - It's been a while but I'm glad to see my conversion of you is continuing. Next thing you know, you'll be going along to gigs featuring men in drag singing Judy Garland - oops, no, already happened.

Check my next post :)

Oh Twisted Logic Thanks so much for that. Jack Twist is so special to me too. I was a fan of jake before, having been pleasantly puzzled by Donnie Darko for some time (and fancying TDAT's Wet Sam), but I was spellbound by Jack Twist and came to find a lot of that character in me and it made me completely re-evaluate everything about my life. And that's no exaggeration. This just proves to me that it isn't a film about two men in love, it's about any two people in love that have to find a way. So many of us can relate to it, whatever our gender and orientation. And it is difficult! This is what Brokeback shows - you have to make choices and they can hurt and you have to give. You are so right - if the world could see this, it wuld be a better place. Jack tried and I feel we owe it to him to keep the hope alive that love will find a way. I know exactly what you mean, but I could never express it so well.

And when Jake talks to us about Jack and looks like that, well I'm ready to collapse in a heap.

Thanks so much for sharing that with us all. You've made my day.

Thank you WDW:)No need to thank me, I was going to post apologising for going on a bit too much, so thank you for listening, as it were. And thanks also for sharing your own thoughts, not just here but in your other posts too. I think all of us who shre a connection with this film share a connection between other fans too. We've all been touched somehow by Brokeback and can relate to each other's feelings about it even though it may have affected us in different ways.

I've got to admit I didn't really know who Jake was before I saw Brokeback. His name sounded familiar (or rather looked familiar when I read it, I didn't even know how it was promounced - I do now though!) but that was about it. I'd seen TDAT but he made no impression on me at all. I only realised it was him when I googled Jake the day after I watched Brokeback for the first time! So to me my first impression of Jake will always be of Jack getting out of the truck and that close up of those beautiful blue eyes *sigh* I can hear my Brokeback DVD calling to me, telling me to watch that opening scene just before I go to bed ;)

Thanks again WDW, for today's and yesterday's Brokeback posts, and for all you do on this site.x

Twisted Logic - please don't think your post was long. It was wonderful. It's important to me that this site is a place for us all to share our feelings because I think most of us feel the same and it brings us together. I love that - it's something I'll always be grateful to the film for - it brought all of us together.

Your comments are making me want to watch more BBM tonight - it's in the machine already and I feel its call too. Jack as he gets out of the truck, leans on it and looks at Ennis is one of the - what am I saying? - IS THE iconic image I know from films and that's when I fell for Jake too.

Thank you, thank you, Twisted Logic. I intend to write lots more here about Brokeback because it was one of the most influential events of my life, if not THE most influential event, and how could I ever have imagined it would be a film that would do that for me.

I'm so proud you shared our thoughts with me tonight and I'm always here. x

I so agree with you, TwistedLogic and WDW, the world would be so much better a place if everyone felt this way. The heart doesn't play by the rules, it loves who it loves.

I enjoy reading everyone's thoughts and impressions of Brokeback Mountain, so please don't worry about the lengths of posts, anyone! Mine are sometimes pretty long too, but hey, we're talkin' about BBM here! :) I just can't say enough about it, it was astounding to me, and I see it was to a lot of others too. I was deeply affected by it, it's one of my all-time favorite films now, one of the most beautiful love stories I have ever seen. I discovered Jake through BBM as well. :)

Thanks Marina - that's good to hear. I worry sometimes that I write comments too long or I repeat subjects in posts too often. But I suppose the whole point of all of this is to express our feelings amongst a like-minded group and to say whatever we feel and whatever length.

I would say no comment can be too long - there is just so much to say! And how can we ever say enough about Brokeback Mountain?

Never enough Brokeback -- NEVER enough!

(Not terribly original, but there it is!)

Hi Beckela - I couldn't agree more, speaking as someone who has got to stop saying 'Never enough Jake'! But I can't help myself...
