Jake: 'It just gets better with time'

Today is another good day to be a Gyllenhaalic - this is true, I know, of almost every day, but today is special because we have more new pictures of Jake and we also get the chance to hear his voice in an audio snippet from the Interview Magazine interview. But first thing's first, yesterday Jake was seen leaving restaurant Joan's on Third. Among the things to note are: great t-shirt/sweater combo (which almost mirrors the Interview cover look - see below), a jampacked wallet (no doubt full of expired library cards like mine), fine Nike, and a beautiful expression.

We're like a fine aged Balsamic Vinaigrette

Interview Magazine has now updated their website, replacing a naked Mariah Carey with Jake, who stares out of the cover, almost pulling you back in there with him, with the most extraordinary eyes. In addition to slightly different versions of the photos, there is an audio snippet from Jake's interview with David Fincher. This is a very affectionate conversation with both completely at ease with the other, and playful. Both David and Jake happily compare their relationship to a fine aged balsamic vinaigrette that can only get better with the years. This is a very brief extract from the interview, but it amused me to hear David call Rendition Jake's 'Torture Movie' and to hear Jake say that not only does he like mud, he also likes swamps. The audio clip is also available to download from I Heart Jake.

The website also reveals that for the 'chopper' picture Jake was wearing a t-shirt by Flexible Fit Calvin Klein Underwear, jeans by John Varvatos and boots by Costume National. Incidentally, James Perse designed the much appreciated t-shirt from the bike photograph. An advertiser's dream.

Eating with the Gyllenhaals - A Guide to LA's Restaurants (continued)

Following on from Jake's vinaigrette reference, it seems only appropos to take a look at two more restaurants in LA recently frequented by Jake. The first is Joan on Thirds, which not only looks beautiful, its sweets include a full range of tempting cupcakes. Alternatively, one could visit diner Fred 62 where Jake was also spotted this week. Looking at this menu is not a good idea when you haven't eaten all day like me.

Rendition to show at the Middle East International Film Festival

October 14 will be the opening night of the inaugural Middle East International Film Festival, taking place in Abu Dhabi. Rendition is among the festival's highlights, as is Heath Ledger's I'm Not There.

Jake (even clothed) beats out a naked Mariah Carey any day.

Seems like Jake's facial hair grows by leaps and bounds every day. Personally, I like him better with just a little stubble or even shaved, cause I think the hair makes him look way older than he really is.

Then again, that could be what he's shooting for. Or he could just be lazy to shave. Or he's trying to "un-sexify" himself for people like me, which, Jake, is simply impossible for you to do, so you can quit trying :)

Hi Fourplay!

Jake (even clothed) beats out a naked Mariah Carey any day. No disagreement there ;) I have to say that I'm liking the beard and the hair - but no doubt when the beard comes off again I'll melt away as I always do. But at the moment I'm enjoying seeing Jake look older. I fear Jake will never succeed to 'un-sexify' himself for anyone, I suspect he's just a bit lazy when it comes to shaving when he has time off, can't say I blame him :)

Yes it just gets beter with time.
Nice column WDW: prices at Joans are similar to those in my own area. Im glad to hear that Jake sometimes politely says no to photos.

O to hear the entire interview between Jake and David. Interesting to me the extent Jake seems in control in these interviews. The guy is very confident.

The balsamid vinaigrette bit was kind of strange - did that come from David or Jake? The vinegar ages, the vinaigrette doesnt - oil gets rancid. Although Jake is so jokey and off the wall -

Analyzing Jake is one of my occupations and obsessions. I compare his relationships with directors to his relationshp with his father - sorta jokey and disaarming -

Yeah, I loved being able to be a fly on the wall to this conversation. Cannot wait for commentary on Zodiac/ Do we know who is doing the commentaries?

p.s. Jake must enjoy relaxing into scruff after being "dolled up" by stylists. My :day off: I often spend the whole day in my pajamas.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

hey Positively Pia - oh a day in jammies - sounds so good to me :)

All these restaurants are so cheap compared to what I'm used to :( I thought the vinaigrette comment was absolutely bizarre - I think it was Jake's idea and they just kept embellishing it. A strange way to visualise a friendship, but I love these Jake surprises. And it's interesting to hear him admit to David that he as an obsessed mind.

Analyzing Jake is one of my occupations and obsessions. - Yep, I can relate to that :D

As for the Zodiac commentaries: one is by David and the other features Jake, RDJ,screenwriter James Vanderbilt, producer Brad Fischer and crime novelist James Ellroy. I ould have liked one with just David and jake for more of this vinaigrette repartee!

I suspect Jake and David weren't ready to have this "easy" conversation WDW. I did get the inpression there were some stresses during filming. I bet Jake's the oil in the balsamic vinaigrette metaphor (I was going to call it the b.s. metaphor, but that was going a bit too far!) - I'll lay even money that Jake's a peacemaker in his family - (recalling him calming Maggie down when she was giving the finger to the paps) Here I go again! The G family is NOT the Brady Bunch - and what they do is none of my business. (just my delightful fantasy pastime hahaha)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Positively pia I agree that there probably were some real stresses on both sides duringfilming and it's interesting this chalk and cheese kind of comment. The two elements so separate and repelling and yet after time they enhance the other and need each other (I like how Jake thinks in terms of food metaphors btw). I think that Jake may well be a peacemaker, just as at other times he may wind people up. I'm just glad to see that Jake and David have reached what looks like a happier place.

Pia, both David and Jake seem to talk about the vinegrette so they are both off, lol. Whatever the case may be I think this was a fantastic interview! It was really interesting to hear Jake talk about going to Japan as a kid and his thoughts on acting and cinematography. Hearing them talking was great. They seem to have mended fences and have a nice rapor (sp?).

Btw, love the new pics of scruffy Jake and thanks WDW for all the foodie info! ;D

Hi Get Real Jake should never be spotted in a restaurant when I'm so hungry, I get very distracted by the menus.

I agree that Jake and David seem like much of a pair in this interview. How I love Jake's voice - I could listen to it for hours.

do we know who is Jake's "cineamatographer godfather"? If not, wny not :):)

Hi WDW -

Lots of goodies today -

Jake looks great in these photos, and the Interview cover is just amazing. Love the hair, and to me he looks great with our without facial hair, although I'm kinda partial to the facial hair. :) The snippet of David Fincher's interview is really good, they discussion is interesting. I can't wait to read the rest of it! I also want to read about Lust, Caution and Viggo Mortensen. You've got to see Viggo in his latest, he's amazing.

The Joan's on Third menu looks wonderful, and Fred 62's atmosphere looks nice and cozy.

Glad to hear that Rendition and I'm Not There will be shown at the Middle East International Film Festival. I really cannot wait to see this film.

Thanks, WDW! :)

Pia, the cinematographer godfather is Robert Elswit. He has a very impressive resume. I only know this because I remember reading that Jake presented him with an award for "Good Night and Good Luck" during the whole BBM awards season.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

There's something very distracting about Jake's cheekbones on that Iterview cover...

Hi Marina - I'll give Viggo's film a go that's for sure - I came across quit a few Viggo fans in Toronto, they seemed very approving of Jake too :)

Get Real - thanks for the information about the cinematographer godfather - that's a very impressive career. And he worked on Michael Clayton too :D No wonder Jake is so informed about film. So many influences. And yet he's a great actor on the strength of his own talent.

I know they did a fair bit of renovating to Joan's on Third. Though I don't think they did enough renovating to where it looks like it's now in the foothills of the Pyrannies. ;-)

This is how I remember Joan's.

Hey Felicia! - I know, it's weird. They have photos of front and back - the front is on the street as you show and then suddenly for the back you're in the canyon - but it appealed to the romantic in me ;)

Anonymous said...

That pic falls under the "Photos We Love" section.

There is no canyon out back. Sadly, just an alley.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Sigh - let me dream :D

Talking of which, g'night all.

Anonymous said...

". . . the cinematographer godfather is Robert Elswit"

thanks, GetReal! Jake is surrouded by talent and, as he has said, because of this, "knows the language of film".

g'nite, all!

Wow, that is some resume Jake's uncle has, GetReal, thanks!.

Pia, you are so right, it is so great that Jake is surrounded by so much talent and creativity, lucky guy.

WDW, he does have the most striking cheekbones, doesn't he?That cover is spectacular IMO - can't wait to see it for real. I know he says he doesn't like to be gushed over, sorry! ;)

'Nite, all!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good morning everyone :) Cold Autumnal morning in London...

Hi Positively Pia - I think Jake realises how lucky he is with such a background but one would've thought it wouldn't come without some pressure

Hey Marina - It's rather difficult not to gush over Jake when he poses for pictures like that :)

I got acquainted with Arcade Fire last night - thanks to Ruby and I absolutely loved the Bafta song! I should have guessed they would appeal to the Waterboys and Guillemots side of me.

Thank you WDW for pointing out that the snippet is available even on IHJ because the site link didn't work for me yesterday...:/

Interesting interview BTW, it shines a light on DF and Jake realtionship, on DF's obsessive ways, on Jake's obsessive ways, on their own (I think) point of view about renditions (I like the way David talks about Rendition, he truly liked it or at least Jake in it IMO), and on Jake needing for a little time off...it must have been a crazy time for him the last two years, exciting yet crazy time...

And Jake in a blue tee is always a great sight!:)

I can't play the audio at Interview -- how sad! I want to hear those two being playful! Maybe it will show up somewhere else that works for me. That cover shot is growing on me -- the eyes are totally mesmerizing.

I have already scheduled October 19 off work, assuming Rendition opens here. I hope to see it more than once that day! Don't want to miss a single thing.

A flying visit (meeting Anouska for lunch and chinwag)...

Beckela - have you tried downloading it from IHJ on their page that I linked to? Interview.com must be having some troubles due to a stampede of Gyllenhaalics ;)

I'm taking the 19th off work too for that very reason.

Hi Xenia - it was interesting to hear that Jake really did need some time off and now he's raring to go again - fab! :D

I was able to download the interview from IHJ (THANK YOU, ALLY AND STEPHANIE!). Interesting, but too much David, not enough Jake. David doesn't let Jake answer much. Bummer! I look forward to the magazine itself.

I know, I know -- never enough, never enough! Apparently I'm more like Jack Twist than I realized -- such a whiner, but so lovable! Honest! :-)

Anonymous said...

Beckela, yes, LOL, David needed to talk didnt he? And as those of us who KNOW Jake so well (despite he is a master of shape-changing and deception and jokey side-stepping) KNOW, :) :), Jake gives good attention, when he's not wanting it, himself.

O Beckela, indeed, you are such a whiner but SO LOVEABLE!

(As a matter of fact, Jake was said to be a whiner on the set of Zodiac! - maybe there's a better word for not being willing to settle for beans! :) :) :) )

Jake's warm, languid, runny-honey voice and 25% off wine at Mr sainsbury's shop. Could it get any better?

(PS: Is there any Jake/wine info? Apart from getting a bit over excited and doing devil horns at that BB party..does he drink? if he was teetotal, it would probably break my heart)

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Wait for me!! Sorry,I'm whining (or whingeing,as we Brits are more wont to call it!) because RL has been taking up far too much of my time,I'm coming late to this great post,WDW,and I haven't had chance yet to download the excerpt of Jake and David from IHJ! Must do so asap, even if Mr.Fincher does hog the conversation, you all sound pretty bowled over by it and a metaphorical stroking from the velvet glove of Jake's mellifluous voice is just what I need! I'm champing at the bit to read a transcript of the whole interview too!(Hint hint! ;-) ).

I'm not surprised Jake got fractious on the set of "Zodiac", and it wasn't just him needled and frustrated by Fincher's endlessly repetitive methods in an obsessional search for the perfect take. It's great to know, however, that it can't have been so bad that they don't want to work together ever again, the end product was a triumph for both of them after all, and off-duty,happily, they seem to have a warm and humour-filled rapport.

Jake really does seem to know all the finest, cosiest, tastiest eateries to frequent, the sarnies and puds in Joan's sound delicious!

It's usually Jake's eyes which captivate me first and draw me back in with any photograph, but in the covershot of "Interview" it's his lips. Such a magnificent mouth.

The jumper he's wearing in that shot made me smile, too, because it's so reminiscent of the brown burst-at-the-seams jumper that Heath was seen wearing a few time in the aftermath of "Brokeback". Maybe his "thrown together" scruff persona in the lovely Joan's photos (what a cute little parking chap, too!)is chiming in,consciously or not, with his old friend Heath's unique sense of "got dressed in the dark" style which we know and love.
I love Jake smart, suited and booted or casual stylish, but it's a refreshing change to see him looking really crumpled and "who gives a sod" now and again, reminds us that he's a mere mortal like the rest of us.

Thanks for the info on Robert Elswit! pia. There are lots of "intersections" with George Clooney on his IMDB resume, too. As well as with Stephen G.
Jake's godfather has some very interesting stuff due out in '08 in post production, too.
I check Borders every single day for Jake. We still have Mariah hugging herself, but Jake is expected momentarily!

Credit to GetReal for the Elswit link, Bobbyanna. And Nadine, how do you pronounce "wingeing"?

Anonymous said...

Oops! Sorry about that.

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hi Pia. "Whinging"(sorry,I spelt it incorrectly the first time) is pronounced Win-Jing. A whinger is someone who constantly moans and whines about everything.

We Brits use it quite a lot,but not anywhere near as much as the Aussies, who often refer to us as Whinging Poms,a Pom or Pommy being a derogatory Australian term for a Brit, especially a recent migrant to the Antipodes. They love us really,it's all in good fun, just as Aussie-bating is an affectionate British pastime. Certain Aussies are the subject of lashings of British affection ;-)

Your welcome for the Elswit link, everyone! :D

Am so excited because I just bought the "Interview" mag!! It is out on newstands now! The pictures look fantastic and the interview is great. The mag has very big pages so it's like Jake is coming right at you. ;) And there are some other cool interviews in this issue, Jason Schwartzman by Molly Shannon, Viggo M., the female lead (who was brilliant) of Ang Lee's "Lust, Caution. And I saw a post for "Rendition" as I was going to get it. :D

Anonymous said...

^^ I saw a poster for "Rendition"

Hi everyone :) Some more great comments - thank you so much. I have almost no time this evening due to Mr WDW wining and dining me but I just wanted to thank you all for the fun I've had reading your comments.

I love all the talk of whining and whingeing - I can't spell it either. We poms may whinge but not about Jake as a whole.

Get Real - I'm thrilled for you that you got the mag and you saw a poster! How wonderful.

Thank you to Anouska for my Jaking lunch :) We didn't actually bother with the food though...

Speak to you all later :D
